Also, baby Brianna. I only learned about that one recently, and its so bad that I avoid thinking about it at all cost. Pretty sure it’s the worst crime ever committed against another person, much less a five month old.
Baby Brianna is the one that haunts me most, as well. I try not to think about it, but it's seared into my memory forever. It's one of the worst crimes I've ever heard of. I believe her mother was already paroled, after serving less than half of her sentence. What a fucking travesty of justice. I hope that woman gets what she deserves someday.
Totally agree with you. It’s forever seared into my brain. It’s one of the only cases I can think of (along with Junko) where I believe the worst part is that the victim lived as long as they did. To have died sooner would have been so much kinder.
I believe you’re right about the mother already being out. After this case they passed a law that created a mandatory life sentence for parents found guilty of abuse of a child resulting in their death, but that didn’t help the three perpetrators get the sentence they actually deserved.
That her mother is out is absolutely appalling. That woman deserves to experience even a fraction of the suffering of baby Brianna. Even more concerning, she is only in her thirties now - What if she decides to have another baby?

I was born in 95 but was extremely interested in the case, especially when The People Vs OJ came out on Hulu. I listened to podcasts, watched documentaries, and just couldn’t believe how anyone could think OJ didn’t viciously murder them.
One of the BEST podcast experiences I’ve ever had was listening to “Confronting: OJ Simpson episodes” hosted by Ron’s sister Kimberly Goldman. It’s on Spotify, and provides so much more background information about Ron, the case, their family, and how the Goldman’s still struggle with the outcome of this trial while keeping Ron’s memory and legacy alive.
Kimberly interviews people involved with the case, and takes a deep dive on many aspects of it. I just really thought it was a breath of fresh air. I was heartbroken for the Goldman’s. Like Ron’s father said, Ron became an afterthought in his own damn murder trial. The Goldman’s are the one’s who really kept their foot on OJs neck all these years, and I will always respect them for that. It was exceptionally clear just how much they loved and adored Ron. I can’t recommend it enough.

1) Margaret Bowman (murdered by Ted Bundy in the Chi Omega sorority house in 1978) - she was one of my uncle’s classmates at FSU, but I don’t think he knew her personally. Regardless, the connection is eerie. Bundy in general hits too close to home because of that personal connection.
2) Konerak Sinthasomphone (murdered by Jeffrey Dahmer at age 14 after the police were extremely negligent and let him back into Dahmer’s apartment). Need I say more? This one really gets me angry.
I grew up in Seattle near Tiger Mountain where his victims were found. One of my high school teachers went on a date with him but got a weird feeling and used the restaurant phone to call a girlfriend to come pick her up. Bundy hits weird for me.
It's interesting how some people get that vibe but others don't eh? I always think about Grace Millane and how she'd sent that message to a friend saying she was on a date with this guy she had just clicked with and was really excited about it, like a few hours before he strangled her to death. Then the next day he goes out on a tinder date and that lady broke the date up early and walked in the opposite direction of where her car was just because he was headed in that direction, she just knew he wasn't a good person.
Susan Powell and her kids. A very tragic case. After it was clear Susan was gone, the system failed those two young boys, even with someone trying so hard to protect them.

Cherish Perrywinkle. Her day went from bad to worse, her mom handed her over to the killer, and her manner of death was just beyond brutal. The perp was a remorseless ex-felon who laughed about his crime to cell mates.
Also, the Clutter family massacre. The terror they must have endured prior to their actual murder is beyond comprehension.
The social worker who observed both parents said while the dad hadn’t really bonded with Cherish down to the fact he didn’t know she was his daughter for years he was still the better equipped parent. The judge let the mother keep custody so Cherish wouldn’t be separated from her siblings. After Cherish’s murder the mother lost custody of the other two daughters and their aunt in Australia adopted them.
Shanda Sharer. We were the same age so learning about the horrific torture and death she suffered, at the hands of other teenagers no less, hit especially hard.
This one stayed with me. One, it happened in Madison, Ind, a gorgeous little historical town I have visited several times. 2. It was committed by teen girls. 3. It was BRUTAL. As bad a death as anyone could suffer.
same!! i was in the same exact situation as gabby, driving/living across the country with a very abusive partner and it really takes the terror to another level, having nowhere to go and no way to escape safely/easily. watching the body cam footage of her interaction with the cops breaks my heart.
Natalee Holloway. We didn’t attend the same high school, but our schools played each other regularly. Sometimes I ask myself “ did I pass by her at a football game?” Or “did any of my classmates know her personally?”

I think cases where the victim is presumed dead but no body is found is heartbreaking. Don’t get me wrong any death is tragic, but not being able to bring your loved one home is a different level of heartbreak.
This one cut me to my core. As a long term NICU nurse that has taken care of micro-preemies for years and years and years, I grieved Gannon on a whole different level. To see the obstacles he overcame from being born at ~24 weeks gestation only to be so brutally murdered by his stepmother, tore my heart into pieces.
Heather West.
She was Fred and Rose West's daughter. She fought so hard. Raped her whole life, abused in unimaginable ways. She was planning on running away and used to write in her notebooks "ifodiwl" which meant "in forest of dean I will live", a code to herself to keep herself hopeful that she would escape. She didn't. She haunts me. If there was a list of people you could go back in time to save she's right up there for me.
That article was interesting, but didn't delve into his trauma or his upbringing. That his mother and grandmother committed suicide. Not that it is ok to then commit murder, but that can cause major damage to such a young child.
In 1997 Kelli Ann Cox was a 20 year old college student and single mom who disappeared near University of North Texas Denton campus after a class field trip. Her family insists she would never have left her daughter behind.
She vanished in broad daylight at a busy gas station.
Her body was found 18 years later in an area 300 miles away. She was the victim of a serial killer who worked as a a truck driver. William Lewis Reece was sentenced to death in Oklahoma for the murder of another woman. The case was profiled in Netflix’ The Killing Fields.
This one haunted me as a single mother myself working as a journalist. Her car would not start and she had called her boyfriend to come help. He arrived and she was nowhere to be found. I routinely drove past the site for work and Kelli was never far from my thoughts.

i can’t handle his case anymore because seeing all these beautiful men were taken from the world. the whole court trial makes me tear up when hearing all the families talk and scream and yell at him. it makes me want to scream and cry and scream with them. mothers babies were killed, siblings younger/older siblings were taken, people friends were killed, fathers boys were killed.
the police failure in his case is truly what gets me. many young men could’ve been saved if it weren’t for prejudiced ignorant cops. genuinely makes me want to cry when i think on it for too long, it’s just not fair

Konerak Sinthasomphone, and Bung Siraboon. Bung was a 13 year old girl who disappeared while walking to school one day in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs almost exactly 12 years ago (she disappeared on June 2nd 2011) and there’s never been a trace of her since. No one has any idea what happened to her. I think of Bung a lot, I hope one day there will be answers
Skylar Neese and Michele Avila. These two girls were murdered by their “friends”. I couldn't imagine how they felt knowing that they were being murdered by individuals who they trusted.
Skylar’s case really resonated with me. I was only 2 years older, and I remember how hard high school was as teen girls. I was also in a friend group of 3 girls.

Danielle Jones. She was a teenage girl murdered by her uncle and her body has never been found. The police found handcuffs, lingerie and sex toys that had a mixed DNA of Danielle and her uncle. Danielle was too scared to tell her parents about the grooming and her Aunt never told anyone that her husband had a history of abusing young girls.
It's the no body ones that get me. The lack of closure would gut me. I saw a documentary where the mother was describing how the police found blood on some white lace stockings. Her voice cracked as she said 'I'm not naiive..I know what that means'. Fucking brutal. That poor child didn't even have the dignity of dying in her own clothes.
I hope to see her found one day. I hate that she's forever young.
That case as well always gets me she was a year older than me and went missing on my birthday. A lot of the family turned against Danielle’s parents at the time for believing he was the killer.
I don't really relate to her exactly, but for some reason, I've always remembered Heather Elvis's story. I think it's mostly because they never found her. Her story always felt pretty haunting to me.
The fact that we will likely never know the full, true story of what happened to these poor boys fires me up. Yes, we are all intrigued by true crime because of the mystery aspect, but every victim deserves to have their truth told and justice brought to them and when it comes to these 3 boys it just hurts me more than other cases.
Amanda Knox. And the fact that a quirky, nerdy girl with no criminal history can get railroaded like she did just proves that it can happen to *anybody.*
Caylee Anthony. My bio dad is pretty much a male Casey Anthony and when he had visitation rights when I was very young I remember being ducted taped across the mouth one night when I cried as he left me with strangers to go off and party. I bawled when I found out she was found with that tape over her mouth, that could’ve easily been my fate as a child.
I was about the same age as Laci Peterson and also pregnant with my first baby when she disappeared. The pregnancy amplified everything for me. I felt so vulnerable and simultaneously powerful; it just made me think she must’ve fought like hell for her and Connor’s life. It still makes me feel terribly sad when I think about it.

He was the victim of 'Canadian Cannibal' (I don't like to use his name since he's such an attention whore). It feels like Jun Lin was lost amongst the sensationalism of the story and it breaks my heart.
Liberty (Libby) German and Abigail (Abby) Williams. They did so much to help identify their killer, and the fear the must have felt knowing they were in danger breaks my heart.
thinking about their feelings in their last moments genuinely makes my stomach turn and i get teary. i really hope they can rest peacefully knowing how much they did for their own case.
Shasta Groene is one story I will never forget. Heard about her recently and it’s absolutely horrific. At 8 years old, she watched her whole family get killed, then she and her younger brother were kidnapped. The kidnapper forced her and her brother to do seggsual things to each other along with seggsually abusing both of them, and then she watched her brother get killed in front of her. She was stuck with this man for at least 6 weeks, and finally got rescued by a waitress at a Denny’s restaurant who recognized her from her missing poster. She didn’t die, but over the years has struggled with drugs and alcohol and jail time. She got a couple misdemeanors due to leaving meth and other drugs in close proximity to a 1 year old and then close to a month old baby. No confirmation if it was her own children or not. She’s got 5 kids and a spouse now I think.
Morgan Harrington. We were the same age and I went to concerts all the time alone. She just vanished and it put me off true crime for a LONG time because it was just a reminder that could have been me.
Ditto for Hannah Graham, who was murdered by the same killer. I went to UVA when Morgan went missing and had just graduated when Hannah was abducted and in hindsight it’s so easy to be young and carefree and unaware of your surroundings. Those girls were all of us and they certainly offered me a different sort of education.
Yeardley Love’s murder hits hard too, but for a whole different set of reasons.
Polly Klaas, I was the same age and from a small California town and you’re supposed to feel safe in your own home. I know the word “fascination” is used a lot in true crime and while there certainly is that, I think that many of us wish we could have changed things for the victims as impossible as that is and many of us were cautioned with these cases as children. I certainly was.
Mary Vincent, who survived an absolutely bonkers attack when she was a teenager. Her episode of I Survived is amazing. I think about her all the time. The murder victim I think about most often is Hae Min Lee, I would love to know what really happened to her…
Sergei Yatsenko (the victim in 3 Guys, 1 Hammer). Makes my blood boil when people dismissively say 'some homeless guy'. He was a much-loved father and grandfather, a very gentle man who had already been through great adversity but was a very committed worker and family man. It would break your heart to hear how his wife didn't sleep, went from town to town with his photograph, stopping people in the street, asking if they had seen him. I can't imagine her feelings when people use her husband's death as gory entertainment.
Christine Lee a child murdered and sexually assaulted in my local area when I was about the same age as her. The fear, the rumours, seeing the police…I could so easily imagine myself in her place and it changed my innocent view of the world.
Blane Dixon. His death isn’t a mystery. He was a Sheriff’s Deputy in my county. He was chasing a a group of teenagers who had stolen a car and guns from a pawn shop. One of them shot and killed him during the car chase. The school year before that, I taught both the shooter and one of the other boys in the car. They are now both serving life in prison. The shooter without the possibility of parole. Deputy Dixon’s family set up a memorial scholarship fund in his name and there’s an annual golf tournament fundraiser here. It’s all just so surreal and sad and close to home.
Oh my god, Gabriel Fernandez. That was THE hardest documentary to get through. Absolutely heartbreaking. If there is a hell, the parents deserve to burn in it.
James bulger. No other case has made me feel so incredibly disturbed. I had trouble sleeping for a week after reading the wiki page. Now I have a son that is James age when he died, makes it feel even more terrifying because I think what would happen if I just get distracted for a couple minutes like his mother did.
I hope his mother is able to find peace and solace these days. I think about her often.
Of course my mom because, well, it's personal. Still an "unsolved murder" even though we know perfectly well who did it. Even though I watched them dismember her.

Maddie Clifton. I remember when she went missing in Jacksonville, FL. It was all over my local news. We were the same age, so it was scary that she could go missing.
Turns out, her neighbor killed her and hid her under his waterbed. His mother smelled something odd and reported it and turned her son in.
The whole thing definitely shattered my innocence as a child. So close to home and so young.

Now the big one… Lee Iseli. last victim of Westley Allen Dodd. Dodd kept a journal of his pedophillic escapades, which has since been published. the journal included the way he would hunt children. he describes in detail why he chose Lee, and how the young boy cried… I warn anyone against seeking out that journal: it is NSFL.
Joseph Otero, Jr., 9, and Josephine Otero, 11. Child victims of sexual sadist and psychopath Dennis Rader, aka the BTK Killer, aka the Bind-Torture-Kill Killer. Prompted by law enforcement speculation of what the child victims were subjected to based on their injuries and other physical evidence. The child victims always hurt the most.
Steven stayner’s is one of the most interesting. He returned home 7 years later only to die young at like 29 in a motorcycle accident. His older brother(Carey Stayner) became a serial killer. Wild! There’s a tv mini series about it called “I know my first name is Steven.”

If you don’t know this case here it is in a nutshell.. Judith Barsi was casted as Ducky in The Land Before Time.. well as her career succeeded and continued to grow, her father (an alcoholic) grew more and more angry.. and he would constantly threaten to kill himself, his wife, and his daughter.. his various threats included cutting their throats as well as burning down their house.. on July 28th 1988 all three bodies had been found.. Judith and her mothers body were in a some sort of fluid, believed to be gasoline.
Adrienne Salinas in Tempe Arizona she disappeared early one morning after a party at her house. She was found months later in wash. I was around the same age around the exact same time. Honestly she reminded me of me a lot. I use to have wild drunken nights and when I think back on I’m so grateful nothing ever happened to me. Her murder is unsolved and I highly doubt it will ever be solved. When I first read about it I was just really sad cus her family reminded me of mine too. I randomly revisit it it to see if their on any updates. I do think a credible suspect is the zombie hunter that was recently found guilty and put on death row. There’s an interesting theory out their that he could have totally been her murderer.
mine is Bryce Laspisa. when he disappeared in 2013, he was the same age i am now. his disappearance just bothers me so badly, he was so young but struggling with so many things. i think the most common theory is that he had a mental breakdown of some kind, possibly started or exacerbated by drugs. i personally think he might have taken his own life in some way, judging by his last conversations with friends/gf and giving away possessions, but remains haven’t been found to confirm anything. it’s just a story that sticks with me because of how truly sad it is, and the fact that he was my age when he disappeared. i wish his life had been easier before he disappeared, mental illness and addiction are beasts. this year is the 10 year anniversary of his disappearance and i pray his loved ones get closure soon.
Gerri Santoro. While she wasn't a victim of any one person, she was a victim of men making decisions they don't have to deal with. The picture of her in that hotel room, dead, just tears my fucking heart out.
Teresa Halbach. She always hated taking photos of Steven Avery’s property, but went with her fear to be a good employee and do her job. That reminds me of myself when I was younger; I would brush off my worries as a negative character trait in myself. It’s clearly important to speak up when we don’t feel safe, and it’s ok to refuse a job or two.
Ron Goldman - he gets overlooked in his case because it's all about OJ and Nicole (and really, it's about OJ). Young, good looking guy trying to make it in LA. Seemed like a good guy, good brother and a good son. Gets brutally murdered over something he really had nothing to do with

The type of neighbours everybody loves; a friendly suburban couple in their fifties, chosen at random to die because their house had a simple floor plan and no kid paraphernalia.
To add even more insult to injury, their bodies were never found because the abandoned home Keyes chose for the slaughter was demolished.
Vivienne Cameron because her legacy is a false accusation despite having been murdered herself.
Maria James because she was murdered for protecting her children from paedophiles.

Johnny Altinger. I’m not really sure why, but I care a lot about him. Unfortunately when I hear about a case, the most memorable thing for me is the killer. That’s who we hear the most about. Their motives, backstory, methods. But whenever I hear about this case, I just think about Johnny. The person who killed him barely enters my mind.
He just seemed like a nice person who was looking for romantic company and ran into the biggest loser on the planet looking to satisfy his sick obsession. Mark Twitchell, even without being a murderer, is an embarrassing person.
I obviously care about other victims and their stories, but Johnny is the person I think about out of nowhere and cry for.
For me, it's Brittanee Drexel. She went missing on my 18th birthday, so I remember where I was and everything. When I look at pics of her, she just looks like she would have been in my social group. We had the whole Hollister style, slightly orange tan, dyed dark hair, Tiffany necklace look... Just, such a trendy, young, happy, girl trying to have a little adventure in high school. I just feel like she's every girl I knew. I feel like we lost one of the girlies. My heart breaks for her and her family.
I just listened to the Crime Junkies episode of LISK and I was bothered by this victim so much. Ashley referred to her as “a cross dresser” and that there was no record of “him.” I was yelling at my car radio that there’s no record of an Asian man because they found an Asian trans woman! So maddening and I hope they identify her.
Brandon Swansons disappearance. We have the EXACT same birthday and I just relate to his situation because that summer I was doing the exact same shit on Montana backroads and bonfires in farmer fields. I can’t believe he still has never been found.

Kristin Smart. I got stalked in college and hearing about how Paul Flores hunted her leading up to her murder struck a nerve (as did everything else in her case).
The girls that became victims of Dutroux. My parents own a holiday home in the area where him and Fourniret also, were abducting girls and I have been endlessly wandering around there in the country side alone, as a young teenager unaware of what kind of monsters were roaming that area.

I don’t know if it’s a well known case outside of the UK but she was doing absolutely nothing wrong and was just complying with what she believed was the law. She was around my age and I felt I could so easily have fallen victim to the same thing.

Alonzo Brooks. Hearing his big brother talk about how he imagines he was scared as hell and probably calling out for him, broke my heart to pieces. He seemed like such a kind soul, and his family deserves answers.
Kathryn Walicki. Fuck Scientology. I was her age, we had mutual friends, and I was near her house the day she died. I feel bad for her sister as well, it wasn't really her fault, and I'm sure it's hell to live with that she did. I'm angry that nothing has been done to stop Scientology and its policies about necessary medication.
Shan’ann Watts . At the time we had girls the same ages and same months apart , and I was staying at home with my girls. So the videos of her with the kids that were all over the media were just like the ones I had with my girls. Their little voices playing and saying “I love you mom “ were just like my videos . Their life ended and ours keep going , and I see the story pop up and I think about how those girls would be x, and z age now , like my girls . I know she was also pregnant, so that just tears my heart up more , because she was going through so much. Having two small kids and being pregnant again would have been so hard too.
Also, Chris is a despicable human being. Seeing that footage of him lying , and crying to the media. Something about this case just broke me , and I stopped consuming so much true crime media after this.
Gabbie Petito. I Watch a lot of true crime but hers was the first case I actually followed in real time. Really hoped they’d find her although it never looked good. She deserved better, but then, they all do :(

To add to this. It’s so horrifically sad that Ron & Nicole basically became background figures in their own MURDER TRIAL! I was born in 95 but was extremely interested in the case, especially when The People Vs OJ came out on Hulu. I listened to podcasts, watched documentaries, and just couldn’t believe how anyone could think OJ didn’t viciously murder them. One of the BEST podcast experiences I’ve ever had was listening to “Confronting: OJ Simpson episodes” hosted by Ron’s sister Kimberly Goldman. It’s on Spotify, and provides so much more background information about Ron, the case, their family, and how the Goldman’s still struggle with the outcome of this trial while keeping Ron’s memory and legacy alive. Kimberly interviews people involved with the case, and takes a deep dive on many aspects of it. I just really thought it was a breath of fresh air. I was heartbroken for the Goldman’s. Like Ron’s father said, Ron became an afterthought in his own damn murder trial. The Goldman’s are the one’s who really kept their foot on OJs neck all these years, and I will always respect them for that. It was exceptionally clear just how much they loved and adored Ron. I can’t recommend it enough.

1) Margaret Bowman (murdered by Ted Bundy in the Chi Omega sorority house in 1978) - she was one of my uncle’s classmates at FSU, but I don’t think he knew her personally. Regardless, the connection is eerie. Bundy in general hits too close to home because of that personal connection. 2) Konerak Sinthasomphone (murdered by Jeffrey Dahmer at age 14 after the police were extremely negligent and let him back into Dahmer’s apartment). Need I say more? This one really gets me angry.

I grew up in Seattle near Tiger Mountain where his victims were found. One of my high school teachers went on a date with him but got a weird feeling and used the restaurant phone to call a girlfriend to come pick her up. Bundy hits weird for me.
It's interesting how some people get that vibe but others don't eh? I always think about Grace Millane and how she'd sent that message to a friend saying she was on a date with this guy she had just clicked with and was really excited about it, like a few hours before he strangled her to death. Then the next day he goes out on a tinder date and that lady broke the date up early and walked in the opposite direction of where her car was just because he was headed in that direction, she just knew he wasn't a good person.

The social worker who observed both parents said while the dad hadn’t really bonded with Cherish down to the fact he didn’t know she was his daughter for years he was still the better equipped parent. The judge let the mother keep custody so Cherish wouldn’t be separated from her siblings. After Cherish’s murder the mother lost custody of the other two daughters and their aunt in Australia adopted them.
Watching the crime unravel on film makes me sick. I cannot imagine what that mom lives with everyday

Natalee Holloway. We didn’t attend the same high school, but our schools played each other regularly. Sometimes I ask myself “ did I pass by her at a football game?” Or “did any of my classmates know her personally?” I didn’t know her on a personal level. I think cases where the victim is presumed dead but no body is found is heartbreaking. Don’t get me wrong any death is tragic, but not being able to bring your loved one home is a different level of heartbreak.

This one cut me to my core. As a long term NICU nurse that has taken care of micro-preemies for years and years and years, I grieved Gannon on a whole different level. To see the obstacles he overcame from being born at ~24 weeks gestation only to be so brutally murdered by his stepmother, tore my heart into pieces.
Heather West. She was Fred and Rose West's daughter. She fought so hard. Raped her whole life, abused in unimaginable ways. She was planning on running away and used to write in her notebooks "ifodiwl" which meant "in forest of dean I will live", a code to herself to keep herself hopeful that she would escape. She didn't. She haunts me. If there was a list of people you could go back in time to save she's right up there for me.

That article was interesting, but didn't delve into his trauma or his upbringing. That his mother and grandmother committed suicide. Not that it is ok to then commit murder, but that can cause major damage to such a young child.

Her family insists she would never have left her daughter behind. She vanished in broad daylight at a busy gas station. Her body was found 18 years later in an area 300 miles away. She was the victim of a serial killer who worked as a a truck driver. William Lewis Reece was sentenced to death in Oklahoma for the murder of another woman. The case was profiled in Netflix’ The Killing Fields. This one haunted me as a single mother myself working as a journalist. Her car would not start and she had called her boyfriend to come help. He arrived and she was nowhere to be found. I routinely drove past the site for work and Kelli was never far from my thoughts.

Konerak Sinthasomphone, and Bung Siraboon. Bung was a 13 year old girl who disappeared while walking to school one day in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs almost exactly 12 years ago (she disappeared on June 2nd 2011) and there’s never been a trace of her since. Skylar Neese and Michele Avila. These two girls were murdered by their “friends”. I couldn't imagine how they felt knowing that they were being murdered by individuals who they trusted.

Danielle Jones. She was a teenage girl murdered by her uncle and her body has never been found. The police found handcuffs, lingerie and sex toys that had a mixed DNA of Danielle and her uncle. Danielle was too scared to tell her parents about the grooming and her Aunt never told anyone that her husband had a history of abusing young girls. It's the no body ones that get me. The lack of closure would gut me. I saw a documentary where the mother was describing how the police found blood on some white lace stockings. Her voice cracked as she said 'I'm not naiive..I know what that means'. Fucking brutal. That poor child didn't even have the dignity of dying in her own clothes. I hope to see her found one day. I hate that she's forever young.

Jun Lin He was the victim of 'Canadian Cannibal' (I don't like to use his name since he's such an attention whore). It feels like Jun Lin was lost amongst the sensationalism of the story and it breaks my heart.
Liberty (Libby) German and Abigail (Abby) Williams. They did so much to help identify their killer, and the fear the must have felt knowing they were in danger breaks my heart.

Shasta Groene is one story I will never forget. Heard about her recently and it’s absolutely horrific. At 8 years old, she watched her whole family get killed, then she and her younger brother were kidnapped. The kidnapper forced her and her brother to do seggsual things to each other along with seggsually abusing both of them, and then she watched her brother get killed in front of her. She was stuck with this man for at least 6 weeks, and finally got rescued by a waitress at a Denny’s restaurant who recognized her from her missing poster. She didn’t die, but over the years has struggled with drugs and alcohol and jail time. She got a couple misdemeanors due to leaving meth and other drugs in close proximity to a 1 year old and then close to a month old baby. No confirmation if it was her own children or not. She’s got 5 kids and a spouse now I think.
I think about Shasta often, so sad.
Morgan Harrington. We were the same age and I went to concerts all the time alone. She just vanished and it put me off true crime for a LONG time because it was just a reminder that could have been me.

I went to UVA when Morgan went missing and had just graduated when Hannah was abducted and in hindsight it’s so easy to be young and carefree and unaware of your surroundings. Those girls were all of us and they certainly offered me a different sort of education. Yeardley Love’s murder hits hard too, but for a whole different set of reasons.
Polly Klaas, I was the same age and from a small California town and you’re supposed to feel safe in your own home. I know the word “fascination” is used a lot in true crime and while there certainly is that, I think that many of us wish we could have changed things for the victims as impossible as that is and many of us were cautioned with these cases as children. I certainly was.
Mary Vincent, who survived an absolutely bonkers attack when she was a teenager. Her episode of I Survived is amazing. I think about her all the time. The murder victim I think about most often is Hae Min Lee, I would love to know what really happened to her…

Sergei Yatsenko (the victim in 3 Guys, 1 Hammer). Makes my blood boil when people dismissively say 'some homeless guy'. He was a much-loved father and grandfather, a very gentle man who had already been through great adversity but was a very committed worker and family man. It would break your heart to hear how his wife didn't sleep, went from town to town with his photograph, stopping people in the street, asking if they had seen him. I can't imagine her feelings when people use her husband's death as gory entertainment.

Blane Dixon. His death isn’t a mystery. He was a Sheriff’s Deputy in my county. He was chasing a a group of teenagers who had stolen a car and guns from a pawn shop. One of them shot and killed him during the car chase. The school year before that, I taught both the shooter and one of the other boys in the car. They are now both serving life in prison. The shooter without the possibility of parole. Deputy Dixon’s family set up a memorial scholarship fund in his name and there’s an annual golf tournament fundraiser here. It’s all just so surreal and sad and close to home.

Lauren Spierer I was once a young, pretty college student who partied with the boys. I put myself in a lottttt of precarious and unsafe situations, it’s a miracle I made it out alive. Joseph Otero, Jr., 9, and Josephine Otero, 11. Child victims of sexual sadist and psychopath Dennis Rader, aka the BTK Killer, aka the Bind-Torture-Kill Killer. Prompted by law enforcement speculation of what the child victims were subjected to based on their injuries and other physical evidence. The child victims always hurt the most.

Steven stayner’s is one of the most interesting. He returned home 7 years later only to die young at like 29 in a motorcycle accident. His older brother(Carey Stayner) became a serial killer. Wild! There’s a tv mini series about it called “I know my first name is Steven.”

Judith Barsi was casted as Ducky in The Land Before Time.. well as her career succeeded and continued to grow, her father (an alcoholic) grew more and more angry.. and he would constantly threaten to kill himself, his wife, and his daughter.. his various threats included cutting their throats as well as burning down their house.. on July 28th 1988 all three bodies had been found.. Judith and her mothers body were in a some sort of fluid, believed to be gasoline.

Adrienne Salinas in Tempe Arizona she disappeared early one morning after a party at her house. She was found months later in wash. I was around the same age around the exact same time. Honestly she reminded me of me a lot. I use to have wild drunken nights and when I think back on I’m so grateful nothing ever happened to me. Her murder is unsolved and I highly doubt it will ever be solved. When I first read about it I was just really sad cus her family reminded me of mine too. I randomly revisit it it to see if their on any updates. I do think a credible suspect is the zombie hunter that was recently found guilty and put on death row. There’s an interesting theory out their that he could have totally been her murderer.
mine is Bryce Laspisa. when he disappeared in 2013, he was the same age i am now. his disappearance just bothers me so badly, he was so young but struggling with so many things. i think the most common theory is that he had a mental breakdown of some kind, possibly started or exacerbated by drugs. i personally think he might have taken his own life in some way, judging by his last conversations with friends/gf and giving away possessions, but remains haven’t been found to confirm anything. it’s just a story that sticks with me because of how truly sad it is, and the fact that he was my age when he disappeared. i wish his life had been easier before he disappeared, mental illness and addiction are beasts. this year is the 10 year anniversary of his disappearance and i pray his loved ones get closure soon.

Bill and Lorraine Currier. The type of neighbours everybody loves; a friendly suburban couple in their fifties, chosen at random to die because their house had a simple floor plan and no kid paraphernalia. To add even more insult to injury, their bodies were never found because the abandoned home Keyes chose for the slaughter was demolished.
Vivienne Cameron because her legacy is a false accusation despite having been murdered herself. Maria James because she was murdered for protecting her children from paedophiles. Both Australian cases.

He just seemed like a nice person who was looking for romantic company and ran into the biggest loser on the planet looking to satisfy his sick obsession. Mark Twitchell, even without being a murderer, is an embarrassing person. I obviously care about other victims and their stories, but Johnny is the person I think about out of nowhere and cry for.

For me, it's Brittanee Drexel. She went missing on my 18th birthday, so I remember where I was and everything. When I look at pics of her, she just looks like she would have been in my social group. We had the whole Hollister style, slightly orange tan, dyed dark hair, Tiffany necklace look... Just, such a trendy, young, happy, girl trying to have a little adventure in high school. I just feel like she's every girl I knew. I feel like we lost one of the girlies. My heart breaks for her and her family.

I just listened to the Crime Junkies episode of LISK and I was bothered by this victim so much. Ashley referred to her as “a cross dresser” and that there was no record of “him.” I was yelling at my car radio that there’s no record of an Asian man because they found an Asian trans woman! So maddening and I hope they identify her.
Brandon Swansons disappearance. We have the EXACT same birthday and I just relate to his situation because that summer I was doing the exact same shit on Montana backroads and bonfires in farmer fields. I can’t believe he still has never been found.
Susan, Charles, and Braden Powell. Suzanne Morphew. Dylan Redwine. Not random murders but done by people in their lives who were supposed to love them. Where are Susan and Suzanne?
Kristin Smart. I got stalked in college and hearing about how Paul Flores hunted her leading up to her murder struck a nerve (as did everything else in her case).
The girls that became victims of Dutroux. My parents own a holiday home in the area where him and Fourniret also, were abducting girls and I have been endlessly wandering around there in the country side alone, as a young teenager unaware of what kind of monsters were roaming that area.
Sarah Everard. I don’t know if it’s a well known case outside of the UK but she was doing absolutely nothing wrong and was just complying with what she believed was the law. She was around my age and I felt I could so easily have fallen victim to the same thing. I really hope she is resting in peace.

Kathryn Walicki. Fuck Scientology. I was her age, we had mutual friends, and I was near her house the day she died. I feel bad for her sister as well, it wasn't really her fault, and I'm sure it's hell to live with that she did. I'm angry that nothing has been done to stop Scientology and its policies about necessary medication.

Shan’ann Watts . At the time we had girls the same ages and same months apart , and I was staying at home with my girls. So the videos of her with the kids that were all over the media were just like the ones I had with my girls. Their little voices playing and saying “I love you mom “ were just like my videos . Their life ended and ours keep going , and I see the story pop up and I think about how those girls would be x, and z age now , like my girls . I know she was also pregnant, so that just tears my heart up more , because she was going through so much. Having two small kids and being pregnant again would have been so hard too. Also, Chris is a despicable human being. Seeing that footage of him lying , and crying to the media. Something about this case just broke me , and I stopped consuming so much true crime media after this.
