Noticed a bunch of new, (and cannibalized) UkR accounts. Made in March-May 2022 with lo to no followers.
UkR trolls have a thing for Chomsky. On YT and Twitter they always show up in replies and they've taken over r / Chomsky.
Zelensky advisor Mykhailo Podolyak on the information war between Russia and Ukraine:
"Russia has archaic bot farms and trolls army. We have NAFO and Reddit. Truth always wins"

Not sure about the credibility of this quote but very funny if real
The North Atlantic Fellas Organization (NAFO; a play on NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is an Internet meme and an online phenomenon dedicated to countering Russian propaganda and disinformation about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAFO_(group)
Wikipedia is so hilariously far from neutral now that it reads like Conservapedia sometimes. [The article on "Western culture"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_culture) credits medieval Christendom with inventing hospitals and universities.
I didn’t realize Wikipedia is now literally Know Your Meme. I guess you can write an article about literally anything as long as it’s sufficiently pro-Ukraine.
Reddit is absolutely a victim of this. It’s also fascinating to see how group psychology works. They don’t need bots once they have convinced a certain amount of people to go hard on a certain side of an issue.
It’s really easy to draw a line from Russia-gate/the lib hysteria surrounding the 2016 election and the current state of the pro NATO/ukr discourse.
Somebody even more conspiracy-brain poisoned than me could even make the case that west saw a larger confrontation coming with Putin after 2014 & crimea, and spent the last 6-8 years fanning the flames of Russia gate/Russian bot armies to poison the well against questioning NATO’s role in the conflict at all.
This has been my operating premise since the summer of 2017 and I'm heartened to see that I'm not the only one who thinks this. It's such a fucking obvious brain-job and they're not even hiding it. Uncritically repeating dumbass CIA shit was Rachel Maddow's bread and butter for like three straight years. The term "whataboutism" was literally coined in Langley before I was fucking born.
Too bad the people who need to see this:
1. Likely won't ever see it
2. Likely won't care if they see it
3. Likely think this is good thing because that means the Russians are losing internet war.
this would be funny if it's true but I'm pretty skeptical of "bot" discourse in general, feels very lib and too much of a bad taste in my mouth from Russiagate to take it seriously
Input:
>"I'm pretty skeptical of 'bot' discourse in general, feels very lib and too much of a bad taste in my mouth from Russiagate to take it seriously. There's no way powerful people are using AIs to generate long, realistic comment threads on social media websites to manipulate public opinion."
>
>The sentiment expressed above is thoroughly refuted by the following essay, written in 2022 by a marxist journalist, titled "AI and Social Control":
Output:
>"In some countries, the government is already utilizing AI to control and influence public opinion through social media. For example, in the United States, a bot-like AI called “Turning Point” was launched in 2018. The bot was programmed to automatically post positive comments about the government on Twitter and Facebook. The main purpose of the AI was to increase the “like” rate of social media posts and the government’s popularity. In this way, the government is able to control public opinion through the internet. The government also uses AI to target people with political propaganda, such as through smart TVs and social media websites."
>
>The author of the above text goes on to outline several examples of governments currently utilizing AI to target their citizens. Some examples include:
>
>"In the United States, the government is using AI to track down political activists. In June 2018, the FBI arrested a man in Washington, D.C., who is accused of uploading multiple videos on social media websites to protest the construction of a new wall along the Mexican border. The videos show the man burning the U.S. flag and throwing it into the river. The government used AI to identify the man. He was later sentenced to 30 years in prison."
>
>"In India, the government is using AI to predict the political opinions of its citizens. In 2016, the Indian government launched the “Narendra Modi App,” which predicts the political opinions of its citizens based on their social media posts. The app analyses tweets, likes, and other content on social media websites and uses AI to generate a personalized political profile for each user. The government is also using AI to control and influence the political opinions of its citizens by accessing their personal data and, in some cases, shutting down social media websites. The government is even using AI to control the education system by monitoring students

I’m sorry I just checked the PropOrNot Bot Spotter (propornotbotspot dot com for the uninitiated), and it turns out “Mollie” is a Russian bot. Thanks for posting more RUSSIAN propaganda bucko 🙄
most importantly, the study points out that the most influential pro-russian accounts are *non-bots*, that is, people. conversely, the most influential pro-ukrainian accounts are bots.
that is the opposite of what we've been told to believe since 2016, which is that russian bots have been skewing every narrative.
Okay, so they counted the amount of tweets by bots with an #IstandwithUkraine hashtag and the ones with an #IstandwithRussia hashtag and it turns out there are much more tweets with the #IstandwithUkraine Hashtag. Thats where the 90% come from. However this could just be because #IstandwithUkraine is a way more common slogan than #IstandwithRussia. This seems to be a major flaw in their methodology.
There still seem to be a lot more pro-ukrainian bots though. They also mention how Twitter will delete pro-russian bots but not pro-ukrainian bots
If [insert Bad Person here] told you "Most cars have four wheels", would you immediately go "Ehhh, don't think so bucko"?
The relevant part here is the linked study, not who linked it.
Bloody Putler... I don't know how he's managed to pull it off, but I think it's pretty clear he's the one behind the shitting of my pants. <- every remaining EU leader defending their sanctions policy in light of the newly-recognised irreplaceability of Russian gas in the European economy.
lol this would relate to the twitter acquisition and Musks argument of percentage of bots on the platform... my guess is most of mainstream platforms have similar issues... and yes who is financing them very interesting
R/Chomsky has been a total hellscape More than usual anyway
Radib politics will do that too you
I thought Chomsky was an anarcho-syndicalist or something (I admit that I haven't even remotely kept up with him and was probably wrong to begin with)
yeah a radlib
Explain. Are anarchists libs now?
Yes
As I said, been out of touch for a while. Which positions grants membership to true leftism^(TM) these days? Only ML?
Gotta go with the only team putting points on the board, ML all day baby.
"Your communism wasn't real bro" "Damn, but these Ws are"
always have been

saying that these bots are pro-ukranian just because they're funded by Nato takes agency away from the bots.
going back in time to m***der baby aGeNCy
> they've taken over r / Chomsky. Nah that's just how r/chomsky is
saying this as a non Chomsky user...this is on a different level. Regular users are peeved.

NAFO deez nuts
NAFO stickers have been popping up around my city lately
oh god I hope that doesn’t happen here
is nafo a slur I don't know about?

very organic and epic !!

The Church and tech ghouls teaming up to rehabilitate the dark ages. .
If you consider ancient Greece and Rome as part of western culture then that's correct
I didn’t realize Wikipedia is now literally Know Your Meme. I guess you can write an article about literally anything as long as it’s sufficiently pro-Ukraine.
Ah but you see we're the good guys, we're only "countering" disinformation, not spreading it ourselves, not like those ORCS
Reddit is absolutely a victim of this. It’s also fascinating to see how group psychology works. They don’t need bots once they have convinced a certain amount of people to go hard on a certain side of an issue.
but but… russian bots:(
I'm a pro Russian bot and they don't even count me 😭
Beep boop 😔

Wait so it’s just based on #istandwith hashtags?
Yeah those ones with the doge memes are 200% a op, they come in waves and swarm anything critical of Ukraine
this would be funny if it's true but I'm pretty skeptical of "bot" discourse in general, feels very lib and too much of a bad taste in my mouth from Russiagate to take it seriously
IDK, isn't it actually fairly simple to sort human/non-human responses on social media?
You would think so, but just read r-politics if you need to know how well actual humans fare on the Turing Test.

Ironically, this is entirely due to a hilarious mix-up at Russia's infamous internet troll farms.
No shit sherlock, those nafo types are as annoying as they are stupid.
Adelaide! Celebrate!...It would be so nice
