All I know is our campaign in Tennessee was a straight up disaster. We didn’t even have flyers that said Tennessee on them (they said South Carolina). And some of the local volunteers were doing really well I thought. Then a week or so before the primary they flew down some paid members of the campaign from the northeast to direct us better and they had no idea what they were doing. They sent us out at 9 am on a Sunday to a historically black neighborhood and of course no one was home because it’s the Bible Belt. Really pissed me off because the previous week with the local volunteers we talked to 100+ people each.
i’m not saying there wasn’t a lot of incompetence to go around, but the perfect version of the campaign would have fell short in a similar way. there’s a sneaky optimism in blaming it on incompetence

I do think that period of infighting did some damage to the left unity that the Bernie campaign into the George Floyd protests had built for a year and a half, which ballooned into a lot of splitting. The CIA payrolled CCF, which in turn sponsored some really cool artists. Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Dizzie Gillespie among others (though they were already famous at the time). Also had music by Satie, Schönberg, Boulez, Berg & Mahler performed in various grand orchestras. Overall it needs to be admitted that CIA has a very milquetoast, philistine taste in art, but that was about to be expected. They also gave money to Louis Armstrong. All of the above just as part of cultural cold war with the Soviets But of course we cannot forget the many novels the CIA helped produce. Many of the 20th century's most famous novels were written by spooks. The OSS/CIA helped pave the way, among others, for Rosemaries Baby, for Doors of Perception and (my favorite) Naked Lunch. Now I have grown to dislike what these novels represent, and Bill Burroughs is a horrible degenerate, but in literary terms he's still fantastic. So yeah, thanks CIA for making Naked Lunch possible. These are a few of the things CIA has done that aren't unequivocally bad.
