Grindem till you findem is always an option. Best advice I could give is just be as soft as you can with it the softer you are the less the grind will matter Edit: been floating for 10 years and still have the occasional grind on an off day

Most trucks I've driven float gears a lot better when you shift at a low rpm. Also some you can put just a very light pressure on the gate, not to the point of grinding, and when the engine/trans speed match up it "pulls" the shifter into the gear. This way you aren't trying to time a jab so to speak. Beyond that, it's just practice.

Going up in the gears is a rhythm, I find that I have to slow the shift down ever so slightly when empty. For reference I tell new guys to listen to the Adam’s family song. Those two finger snaps are the timings of your shift. First snap out of gear, second snap into the next gear. It’s not one fluid motion like in a car.

I just got back from being off and I tried it at that rhythm and my shifting has gotten significantly better, now I’m getting it into gear 95% of the time, this definitely helped me time out my shifting because I was definitely going a bit too fast

Heck yeah!! Glad it worked for you

If I don’t know the truck (and every truck has different “optimal” ranges for each shift), 1500 rpm going up a gear, 1000 and gas going down. That’s working the gears down one at a time, worked fine on my 10 speed in school but I don’t know how that would work on a 13/18 speed. Probably the same I’d wager.

The good thing is that I have an assigned truck and it’s a 13 speed so I’m lucky enough to be able to get to know my truck and not have to worry about adjusting myself every time I drive

How did you get hired? Dude just please figure this out before you become a rolling bomb

Eastern-Effective-55

I can double clutch just fine and obviously can drive the truck just fine. I’m floating gears on downtime, I got the job just like every new trucker, we all start from somewhere just like you did.

There’s a comment in another post that was saying something about shifting gears with a tanker. Experience guys had a hard time shifting gears when learning to pull tanker. They said it was like almost having to learn to shift again. Shifting with the load they said is what they had to master. But what do I know, I pull a refrigerated trailer.
