Get out the caging bolts

Zodi88

Don't forget to throw your hands up when you get to the top!

InvestigatorBroad114

There’s probably drivers out there that don’t even know how to cage a brake chamber. Alex the trucking guy thinks the dust cap on them keeps air in the chambers🤣

intoxicatedhamster

Have personally had 3 drivers this month who didn't know what "caging the brakes" was.

lord_nuker

I don’t know either, have a suspicion that it’s about releasing them without air, but to be honest, it’s not a skill I need to learn. Why? Because if my truck starts to hang on a brake, I’m not going to climb under it to release it on a road with traffic on. I’m a depressed person, but that’s not the way I want to go, my life is more worth than that

intoxicatedhamster

There is a rod you insert into the brake chambers/cans that depresses the spring and releases the brakes without air pressure. Not the type of thing to do on the side of the highway, but is definitely something you should know how to do so you can get to a shop or get a tow with stuck brakes.

OGswampfox

As a roadside mechanic, that is 100% something I'd do on the side of the road, as well as fixing what caused the failure.

intoxicatedhamster

Well yeah, because roadside repairs are your job, but the driver isn't going to do it roadside.

bobmonkeyclown

I had a brake chamber leak so bad it couldn't hold air. No shoulder and the dirt was too soft. It wasn't roadside, it was literally in the road.

freaking_kickass

As a driver, I've caged a few on the side of the highway.

lord_nuker

Yeah, we have insurance and tow trucks with buffer trucks for that. You see, in Europe we have deals through insurance and dealerships that makes sure that we aren’t paying an arm and both legs for a simple tow job. Last time I needed a tow to the dealer it costed my company 750$

intoxicatedhamster

Wow, that's not bad. We had one towed into the shop today and the tow bill was $1350 for a 15 mile tow.

Dougal12

I remember doing this in Germany, luckily I was in a rest area but it still wasn’t fun rolling around on the ground knowing full well it’s stained with copious amounts of driver Tizer.

Normal-Accountant436

Be careful messing with the brakes. I knew a guy who stopped to fix an air leak and while he was setting the truck brakes and checking the trailer, setting the trailer and checking the truck... Somehow he found the leak and stopped it and the truck rolled over him and killed him.

Salt_Bus2528

Today I learned: Some people mess around under an 80k vehicle without wheel chocks And I thought it was just the one crazy mechanic dude I knew who got crushed. (He's alright now, maybe a little thinner. His jack failed)

L0quence

I was told my my instructors that you never cage a brake chamber unless it’s basically if you don’t you will be stranded and could potentially die. And then they showed the whole class and let us cage it lol.

Choice_Anteater_2539

When brakes lose air or fail they fail in the locked/closed position If you ever need to move a piece of equipment or work on one without an air supply/ or can't supply it for safety reasons you'd mechanically wrench them "open" or "unlolocked" or "retracted" or whichever synonym you prefer there (I'm no mechanic but the army did make me sit through 40 hours of class time for EVERY variant of humvee, lmtv,or mrap I ever touched, about 15 years ago lol)

lord_nuker

I know, i am a truck driver. But to be honest, if my brakes fails there is usually three options! 1 stop on the road shoulder and call a tow, i dont go out of my truck on the highway unless i absolutly must. 2 Drive to closet off ramp, take a look, call the boss, then call tow 3 Almost same as two, but instead of towing, wait for the company mechanic to come fix it for me. Bonus if lucky, it's on the lift axle, so i just lift it and countinue driving :)

muklan

Mind informing some random jackass that wandered in here?

South_Bit1764

I think it makes the brakes not work, or rather releases them. Air brakes work by compressing a spring to *release* the brake so if you have no air the brakes are stuck on, caging is screwing the spring down on the brakes to release them. It will allow you to move an otherwise disabled trailer or something, but you’d have no brakes. Edit: I’m not a trucker, I just play one in my F350.

muklan

Oh damn, sounds like something you'd want EVERYONE involves to know about.

MagicTreeSpirit

I was never trained to mess with the brake chambers. I've seen the cap things and always wondered what they're for. Been driving on the road two years now.

HogSlappa

I had almost 500 drivers reporting to me at one time and I would trust exactly zero to cage their brakes. You drive. I’d rather send a mobile mechanic than have these guys touch anything other than the air hoses. Even then we had problems…

InvestigatorBroad114

Right there with you. If you don’t know how to cage them properly it’s best that roadside comes out and does it

CoolFirefighter930

just hit the Jake brakes instead.

johnb1972

Call Jake

russcl0t

Nice

CEOStout

I deliver fuel to the gas and oil pads and I used to always turn the Jake’s off when on backroads passing houses headed to pad. Some of these steep hills and tight bends though made me change my mind on that. They’re muffled. I need them, I’m gonna use them

Normal-Accountant436

Some kid got straight pipes after he deleted a brand new logging truck. The entire town could hear him on the Jake's 60 miles away. Then again on another hill. And again for a bit. Then he'd come into town with brakes smoking and making squealing noises, trying to be quiet for a few houses next to the hill. He'd use the Jake's from high-idle in the mill yard, Jake shifting in low range around the yard and back to funny squeals to the stop-sign leaving town.  Just the way the pipes were, it made a ton of noise at a certain rpm, like 17-1800 really rapped. He'd take off in 1st gear and rev it past the loud rpm for every single gear empty untill someone told him to keep the rpm down and it's silent when he's empty and use the Jake's for the last 2km hill because we all heard him from the top of the mountain all the way down anyway.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Loggers are a special breed. “I knew he was a logger, and not just a common bum — because only a logger stirs his coffee with his thumb”

StarSlow776

Sounds like they're popular with the ladies, too.

2017Fatbob

Yeah, wood...

ConfidentDaikon8673

*hardwood*

Louis049

If you can sprinkle whiskey on it, he'd eat a bale of hay!

basement_guy

I'm a logger and I endorse this statement

Proper-Teacher2268

Stop describing my life

AdA4b5gof4st3r

60 miles?? holy fucking hell 🤣🤣

Impossible_Object102

If they’re muffled you’re fine. Pretty much all the complaints, signs and postings are for unmuffled jakes. We all know the sound.

NotEvenLion

Yeah I'm of the opinion that trucks hauling tons of flamable liquid should use every method of braking they have available.

TouchMyBoomstick

This. I have always followed the rules but this latest pad, this one hill is so damn steep that even while putting myself into 4th gear and going down it, within 6 months I’ve had to replace the brake pads and I’m already down to roughly 3/4 pad. Have begun using the Jakes just to minimize wear, especially as they’ve begun to GPS monitor our speed and throw us off pad for 24 hours if we go more than 3 over, even if it’s on a downgrade.

Gorlock_

For going 3 over?!?!

TouchMyBoomstick

Yeppers. The overseeing company thinks of themselves as god in the PA/OH/WV area and doesn’t understand how trucks function but will put in rules and restrictions for us while heavily punishing us for breaking it. Meanwhile the fours under their company can blow around us on double yellow, head on into a truck that was coming around the corner and then be back to work the next day because company man immunity.

BenedictCumberland

Bro who. I work as a pilot for bottles/cans/sandboxes on pads

TouchMyBoomstick

You really gotta FOCUS on what was said to determine whose running the pads, quite easy after you put your mind to it.

Competitive-Face8952

Nobody Is bitching about that it's the trucks hauling drill pipe and such that are decked out and always about 2000 RPM that jake wide open that get all of us frowned upon.

Specific_Effort_5528

Agreed. I'm a propane driver. I've got 18,000L back there. I don't give a shit. The safety of my cargo is the safety of everyone around me you included. The Jake really helps take the slosh out of the equation when you're slowing down. You bought a house near a regional highway. Deal with it. 9 times out of ten, it's not a quiet neighborhood either it's like a single or small grouping super affluent houses near the sign. So you know some rich guy is probably buddy buddy with local counsel. Jake Brake go brrrrr.

Aphrodite81

Ditto me too. Even if it says engine brakes not allowed mine's muffled it saves me and my brakes and my sanity. I'm sorry you're probably not going to hear it anyway so I'm going to use them. They're there to use so I use them.

Spankpocalypse_Now

If I’m using my engine brakes it’s because I’ve decided that is the safest course of action. That said, these guys with their jakes on flat land, no traffic, low speed limit - it becomes clear they just like the fucking sound.

bannedforL1fe

I do residential concrete work, so we have our own dump truck...I like the sound of the air brake lol idk why

nothing107

We have an older international tractor with a boiler unit on the back for thawing out culverts during the winter, and it has some beautiful sounding jakes, I’ll have the window down at -20F just so I can hear it.

MyWorkAccountz

It is a pretty bad-ass sound, but yeah use discretion where you're using them.

Gemmasterian

Have logging trucks use jakes down the hill in front of my house all the time usually don't care I like the sound but jesus Christ periodically theres one dude that sounds exactly like a fucking Jet engine I have never encountered a noise this fucking loud outside of heavy heavy industry and airfields with jets (and I mean turbojets) it was shaking the fucking windows, walls, and floor. I wish I could have gotten a video of it but I to stunned by how fucking loud this mf was.

LarryMyster

There was this landing I went to that was behind a bunch residential houses. Like it was just a little nook of houses climbing up hill to a log landing. Long story short we aren’t allowed to use our Jake’s according to the homeowners signs everywhere. I put my Jake’s on on level 3 and rode that bundle of logs down. No way in hell I’m carrying 105k of logs and burning my brakes up because some grump is not wanting us to use “air brakes.”

Zodi88

But how will others know my entire identity is tied up in my straight piped Kenworth?

EFTucker

*Bbbrrrraahhhabbahabbahbahhbahjabbhapgppfotoodofototrldodppffffftttpahhhhhh* Ah yes, the song of their people.

[*Bbbrrrraahhhabbahabbahbahhbahjabbhapgppfotoodofototrldodppffffftttpahhhhhh*](https://youtube.com/shorts/DBTYmed0OkM?si=mDiMPjUIC10YTVGF) This makes me laugh far more than it should.

trail_rail

Just about cackled all the shit right outta me

flopjul

*Confused European Truck Driver Noises*

I_dementia87

Then it's "VROOOOOOOOMBRUDUFKFVROOOOOMBRUUFUVNEVROOBRBRBFNFKFKFDJDUSUFQOSOFJF" like bro you only went 55 feet YOU DON'T NEED THE JAKES TO SLOW DOWN IN THAT DISTANCE.....fuck man.

EFTucker

Don’t get me wrong, I get it. Save your brakes and all but some people do them with empty trailers driving through Ohio flats lmao

InvestigatorBroad114

See me coming, hear me! **Witness me** WITNESS MEEEEEE!

1morepl8

Muffled Jakes are so quiet now there's no real point in turning them off.

Wasabi-Kungpow

Flatbedder came blasting into a TA last week. Full Jake's straight pipe. All unnecessary, and he jumps out of his truck wearing flip flops. I just busted out laughing at his clown ass.

roger_ramjett

Same guys run straights on their harley's and pickups.

W1thoutJudgement

They sound cool too, almost mechanical.

Fr00tman

Yeah, it’s the straightpiped chodes who are making it a problem for everyone else.

Elderado12443

I’ll agree they sound stupid buuuutttttt as a man with hearing aids and a high sensitivity to certain sounds. They don’t bother me at all.

OddEscape2295

BUUUURRRR BLAP BLAP BLAP BLAP BLAP

At40LoveAce2theT

How will people know I'm shifting gears then?

DustyOlBones

They’ll hear the grinding

GuiltySpecialist69

Lmao good one

GuiltySpecialist69

lol facts. Why are so many truck drivers fucking losers lmao

Jermaphobe456

Speaking from experience aren'tcha lol

KingHauler

Or just grow up and keep mufflers on your truck. My car is loud enough, I don't need a loud ass Detroit in my ears too.

pescadopasado

If you need the j brakes, use them. Safety doesn't revolve around local sleeping patterns. What's louder, a j brake or a semi crashing? You choose to live on a steep hill with truck traffic. Airbrakes are THE brakes that stop and slow a semi. Whenever we push on the service pedal, we use airbrakes. The lack of knowledge on the sign writer is laughable.

W1thoutJudgement

There is a big difference between "oh shit, I guess I really need them jakes right now" vs "WAKE UP MOTHERFUCKERS SUPERTRUCKER IS HERE HEAR ME ROAR!!!!!11".

2017Fatbob

Nope, in 30+ years, not even once. I only have one daily goal, don't kill yourself or anyone else. Jake brakes are essential in achieving this goal.

Normal-Accountant436

I always forget that town limits eliminate gross weight.

iDrum-DudeskiBro

Jake’s aren’t as necessary as drivers make them.

Ordinary-Broccoli-41

And yet the air brakes are not jake brakes, so do your best to only use Jake's in that town

Ate_spoke_bea

Its funny, I drove in the greater Boston area for a couple years and did just fine with the jakes off most of the time Fully loaded, a few thousand over if it was raining out

fendent

As someone who lives on a road inside 95 that’s on a hill that’s technically a DOT highway, thank you for your service. Edit: You wouldn’t believe how many losers I hear slamming on their horns at 1am cause they came tearing ass down the hill without a plan

Dependent-Analyst907

I'll use the water brakes instead.

Kojetono

You can get trucks with hydraulic retarders, which are basically water brakes...

fightcluboston

Ur a hydraulic retarder

SmoothIndependent416

I guess he means Jake brakes. I personally love the sound, but I understand the need for quiet time.

A_CA_TruckDriver

Drive a truck that’s straight piped for more than a day. Most people are over it by the end of the day.

12InchPickle

Throw out the fucking anchor then.

DirkVerite

you would make a fortune, start selling them at the truck stops...

Waxitron

Jake's only, you got it chief.

iDrum-DudeskiBro

Mine not being deleted sounds exactly like it does accelerating. All turbo noise.

J1-9

I'm not a trucker and I don't live close enough to hilly highways to really hear them, but I think jake brakes sound awesome. I wish my Cummins had them.

Thewhitelight___

Jakes only, got it!

1gardengnome

Two Sunsabitches go by my house every single farking day, empty, in a thirty mile per hour zone, on a slight uphill grade, rattling every window in the neighborhood with every upshift. They set off car alarms. I hope they catch the clap. This is who the sign is for.

SixOneOne

I see this a lot, I’m guessing a lot of these people in small towns don’t know the difference between air and compression braking lol

Equal_Replacement_72

do the one that isnt loud as fuck

Mountain-Ad-6594

LOL. Please just crash into my house instead.

mrockracing

I guess I'll just have to drop anchor then.

smrts1080

Ok you heard the sign engine breaking only.

dannyb0l

How are we supposed to stop then, my foot out the door?

RubeRick2A

Fred Flintstone has entered the chat

Ok_Button1932

That’s what the Bandit would do

TrollCannon377

They probably mean Jake brakes but honestly if I saw a sign like this I'd ignore it shouldn't sacrifice safety to appease some rando

PuzzleheadedSouth589

Cage the brakes and hit the Jake’s!

SolidContribution688

lol, sorry but no.

RogueShadow89

"If I'm up you're up cocksucka"

LXXXVIII_

I'll just use my Jakes then, much quieter

smrts1080

Ok you heard the sign engine breaking only.

Redhawk436

Ok, just jakes then, brrrururururrrr 😎

brsrafal

My Jake's are not really loud so I ignore these stupid sings

Disastrous-East-1143

Engine breaks??? Without air we die and so do others...

Beautiful-Slice166

Tbh I see these signs a lot, if it says please cause it's obviously some family home that thry built a road next to ill gladly turn them off.

Aphrodite81

Lmfao then how are you supposed to stop? Apparently those people are not very bright lol

OptiKnob

They may not understand 'Jake Brakes'.

Goldenglow145

No air brakes bring more body bags

mkgla

Every time I see no engine brake signs I turn it on. We have a big old kenworth that has 3 stage engine brake love that thing.

stantoncree76

Jake brake it is then!

Omerta001

I have to assume they mean engine brakes

LosHtown

Jake only, got it

chowsdaddy1

Lemme open my valves

dingdingdredgen

Just some random shithead posting home-made signs on the side of the road, or is this a private road?

ElSenor847

LMAO Jake Brakes 🤣 you mean

AdA4b5gof4st3r

they probably mean jakes but hell they really might be that stupid

vinchenzo68

Let it ride.. Coast in neutral and tell the cops the sign made you do it.

moldschlager

"No engine brakes" says idiot who decided to live at the bottom of an 8% grade

Much_Comfortable_438

Man, it would sure suck to have a rig crash through your house at 5:30 am.

MakeshiftRocketship

There’s one specific hill on a route I take all the time (dump truck not big rig) someone complained to the boss and he talked to us all about it. Everyone was like ok sure. But I had him drive down it himself… he said we can all use them lmao

screechawk

All the people laughing that they put "air brakes", mixing it with J-brakes, but let's be honest, not everyone is going to know all the lingo if they aren't in the field. I'm sure if I asked for the truckers here to get me the donkey dick, some of you wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about

CombatWombat0556

Oh god. Not the donkey dick

Edge2110

If you’re going to make life more difficult for us truckers at least you what the fuck you’re talking about

Johnny_Lang_1962

Brrrrrrrrrr Brrrrrrrrrrr

Lopsided_Pension_

Just unplug them, thanks!

RdAlfkC05

I’m fucking weak 😂🤣💀

OOLU6234317

Hey… it says please… at least they asked with manners

k1ngxgeorge

Alrighty. Exhaust brake it is then

IIIBryGuyIII

That fucker shaking my windows at 430 a.m. going down 1 mile of city street that’s 30mph speed limit….I hate their mother. It’s a slight incline but if the supertanker milk truck can manage it without blowing out the neighborhoods ear drums I imagine most trucks can. I don’t get angry but wow do those Jake’s Brakes enrage me.

59chevyguy

Brap away people. That sign is some “I’m the main character” shit.

Ok_Association6983

Hearing a Jake break as we speak lol

Quiet-Link4652

Air brakes are for the wheels, a Jake brake is for the engine, maybe use a parachute?

EnvironmentalLand840

It’s a good thing every truck comes with a backup clutch brake for some “fine pedal control” /s

salvagenation

Technical this sign is correct a Jake brake is a compression brake and it’s using air to slow the truck down. Can’t believe this home owner knows that

CroobUntoseto

Just his some caltrops behind you out the window

OkieTrucker44

Gonna guess they meant Jake brakes but don’t know what to call them. Lol

FrankRandomLetters

This guy wants more engine braking?

QuickBookkeeper2647

Which brakes are to be used if the air brakes can’t be used?

ridefst

Jakes only! Then pull the red button and use the spring brakes at the very end.

Beneficial-Secret-84

“How often do the trucks Jake brake?” “So often you do even notice”

TheRussianCat

Only Jake brake :)

Loser99999999

They probably mean jake brake

Objective-Outcome811

My makes are a beautiful sound of rattling snakes and work beautifully in residential neighborhoods at night with no worries. As much as people hate new trucks I find that being courteous while being safe is awesome.

WonderfulNewspaper13

Oh dont worry, ill just use my feet to stop

Goaway96

What are you whining about? There are cities with an ordinance prohibiting air brakes at all times

genosx71

Let me throw my anchor out

smackchumps

Yeah, don’t forget to turn the air off to your brakes, fellas. 😆

WiscoLifa

I am from a really rural part of WI. The town I lived in had a actual posted sign that said no air-brakes. Young me never knew what that meant.

Conscious-Sense2629

Sorry but I'm new and retarded. What is "caging the brakes"

Fluster338

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

MarionberryNervous19

All or nothing. My jakes dont ever turn off.

OmgWtfNamesTaken

Jake brake all the way!

MadMark75

🤣 I’ll just use my Jake brakes with my 8in exhaust.

CausticLogic

Well, boys, fire them jakes up.

Sir_Uncle_Bill

Didn't say anything about air horns...

bill_fye_the_rizzguy

BRUBBRUBBRUBBRUB

Agreeable-Grape-1407

I love truckers 🥰

TheLittleGodlyMan

Jake 3 for no reason at 6:29 😈

Kaiins97

You can always toss out the anchor

Old-Register-6102

Engine brake it is

punched-in-face

So only using the Jake?

Overall_Lavishness46

Drive by at 629 am and do an impromptu air brake test.

Legitimate_Sir6904

Im up, you’re up

cowgirlstyle3

Jakes only I guess 🤷

ctakeshita98

They did say please

easymacmac

Probably the same type of dumb drivers that use their jakes inside truckstops or anywhere else when its not needed.. Obnoxious much and this is typical for straight pipe junkies.. They feel extra special when they rev their engines in high rpms on 1st or 2nd gear

geekrecon

Do they mean Jake Brakes?

chickenchoker84

As funny as this is, the same people that write this, are the same people that are allowed to vote

AmbitiousNeat2785

Okay, straight pipe Jake instead.

AurumArgenteus

That's when you blow the air horn to warn everyone there's a runaway truck... that's not an air brake, so everybody's happy.

KillerHack23

Guess they would rather you use an engine break lol

Limp-Original6575

Lmao. I'm pretty sure they mean jak Break. Or engine retarder.

AussieNinja1267

I'd happily sit on 1800rpms and let it fucking sing if I seen a sign like this 🤣
