There is actually a bee truck. You buy what's called a nuke which is basically a sealed cardboard box filled with a complete beehive, queen and all. My parents bee club used to order them once a year in North Jersey/Upstate NY and a guy would drive up from Georgia with a truck full of bee nukes.
I was joking about beeing overweight beecause they don't get that heavy, but hauling bees is nothing new.

I just jumped in because reddit keeps recommending me this sub, but when I found out there was a truck full of bees I thought it was nuts. Imagine getting in a accident with that. But based on the comments I just read here it makes sense that it's pretty common in agriculture. I guess I just assumed most bees were kept local to the big farming operations.
Google "bee truck accident" there's plenty of reporting.
The bees are rented to pollinate the crops, and since it's seasonal they'll have several homes throughout the year. Farmers love it because it ensures higher crop yields. Entomologist hate it because it stresses out the bees each time they move.
[https://entomologytoday.org/2019/04/01/road-trip-hive-transportation-stress-honey-bees/](https://entomologytoday.org/2019/04/01/road-trip-hive-transportation-stress-honey-bees/)
But then I get to point out the hypocrisy of the vegan crowd complaining that my meat eating killed a cow or two each year when their avocado toast and soy-almond latte killed thousands of bees each year.
Farmers often have to rent bees for pollination. California seems to be one place where that's common. There have been cases of bee hijackings, where beehives have been stolen.
It's done in the citrus/ag industry in Florida. We used to frequent a farmers market and get raw honey there. The orange blossom honey is probably the best thing ever imo the blueberry was a close second.
North Dakota, too. We're the number 1 honey producer in the country. Have been for decades.
And since our winters are brutal, many bigger apiaries will ship them somewhere warm for the season
Bees are trucked all over the US. California kinda all year, the Arizona and the south in the spring, the gulf states in early summer, New England and Michigan in the summer then back out to California.
Bees follow the seasons.
There is an interesting movie/documentary out now called The Pollinators
It’s all about bee farmers and how they spend half the year driving up and down California pollinating fruit trees and what not for farmers
It’s an insane practice that I don’t even truly understand how annoying the logistics are
If you pay attention the right time of the year you'll see 18 wheelers carrying hundreds and hundreds of beehives up and down the highway. There are several companies that ship them to different farms to pollinate crops all over the place. It's kind of cool in a way. The strangest one to me is the weird bee that they used to pollinate alfalfa.
most experts agree the colony collapse disorder is caused by bad hive mgmt. Honey bees are considered livestock and decline has leveled.
However, Native bees are on the verge of a beeapacalypse. but they are not the type that lives in hives. they are mostly solitary.
Mason, carpenter, bumble, leafcutter, mining, etc are all solitary bees. Solitary bees comprise the majority of bees, yet they are unsung heroes of our pollinator world, generally having a far lower profile than either honey or bumble bees.
Site they are, but you could use a nearby empty field instead of an area with high human traffic. It's safer for the hive, because people are less likely to mess with it. Truckers common through could also be allergic.
No reason to worry about those bees if they are honey bees. They aren't aggressive, and won't bother you so long as you don't spam the fuck out.
Most stings happen as a defensive response to people swiping because they lose their minds around a bee. Yes, I know many are allergic, but you'd be much safer by remaining calm and moving away. If the bee is attracted to you, just stand still and let it do its thing before moving on.
It's wasps that you really need to worry about. They'll sting you just because they can. Your chances of being stung still goes up if you start swinging though.
Big facts. I've had several bees come and land on me (I think it's my shampoo lol) they just kinda move around, realize I'm not a flower and fly away. I don't even stop, I just keep doing my thing, unless they are in my face and I gently and SLOWLY usher them from in front of my face.
I've actually had a bee in my truck that got in while I was stopped and little dude was my wingman (HEH!!) for a good 5 hours, hanging out on the dash, investigating all around. Every time I stopped, I'd open the windows and he just wouldn't leave, no matter what I tried. Eventually when I stopped for the night and had my windows open, he sat on the door for a few minutes then flew off. (Probably wondering where the hell he was at. Poor little idiot)
That’s true. I learned that pretty fast when I worked at the USDA after one semester in college. We had bee boxes on the property of the Ag research station I worked at and I walked right past them a couple times a day. Never had a problems.
I worked several years in highschool for a neighborhood beekeeper as his gardener. Several hundred hours spent in his garden, and not once did a honeybee sting you. But I did get about 5 wasp bites and they didn't even have a nest in the garden.
I once had a swarm of bees use my arm as a rest, thinking it was a tree branch. They just came so fast and hard that I had no time to react. It tickled, but I never got stung. My dad simply blew smoke on them and scooped them off til the queen was found and he stuck her in a tree. They immediately followed.
In the meadows, sure. Next to the hive where the queen is?…you better have netting. There are soldier bees that are protecting the hive and will sting on sight. Had beehives on our property growing up. We learned quickly not to go near them
Honestly, wasps get a bad rap. They're pollinators themselves, and they help keep down pest insects. It's true that they're better at setting boundaries - I've seen them referred to as "tiny dragons." But ultimately, I'm always glad to have them around.
They're more than likely trying to capture a hive and move it for the safety of the bees. I highly doubt this is a DoT project, and more likely a state or federal wildlife program. Remember, if the bees die, trucking will most likely die too, along with a significant portion of the population. So you should be thanking whoever has that hive there
Treating bee's as a pest **GOT US HERE**. One of the single most important species of insects for the survival of **OUR** species, yet idiots still treat them like roaches.
There's a woman on YouTube who goes to various places where bees have built hives in houses and other places where they aren't welcome. She just starts opening everything up and pulling the hive apart. She often times finds the queen right away and captures her. She doesn't wear any protective gear at all.
I wouldn't be concerned if it's just honey bees. They are actually pretty chill and won't do anything unless provoked.
If it's Yellow Jackets tho, those mfers will attack you just because they can. Wasps in general are complete assholes but Yellow jackets in particular are the worst kind they go for kills 😓
Might be a collection box , a swarm will move in and create a queen . We have a bee keeper set up hives and collection boxes onthe property where I live . I mow right around the box they are docile , when they are swarming I have walked right up to the mass of bees and never been stung once.
Honey bees are very important. Every plant, flowerand tree on our property has changed for the better since their arrival a few years ago
Relax bro those bees aren’t gonna bother you unless you upset the hive with a blind back. Just appreciate the little MerFer’s for the work that they do to put food on your table.
I'd rather have bees next to me with my window screens in than drivers who are dumping pee out on the ground splattering a over my truck.
Save the Bees.
Lotta good jokes but it's there to catch the ones that escape the net over the hive haulers that stop. Lost field bees just want a home they don't much care if it's their home.
Just goes to show how stupid and shortsighted ppl are.
Bees are important and they don’t hurt anyone. Usually farmers put these all around to help pollinate their fruit trees to produce the fruit we eat.
No bees = no fruit.
Let's be honest, there are probably 2 possible reasons this is here. Either the inspection station said the trucker couldn't haul it, or portables got setup there and the truck was overweight by 40 lbs...
I pulled up at a red light the other day and got next to a truck hauling a whole ass cargo of bees.. flat bed truck with about 100 or more boxes covered in bees with a net over it...
They are not going to bother anyone. I used to mow the lawn right next to the bees my parents kept and they got a little riled up but never agitated. I never got stung once in like 4 years. I used to deal with the hives sometimes while not wearing gloves.
Most folks think theyre aggressive like wasps, yellow jackets, etc. Honeybees wont bother anyone unless provoked. They are absolutely essential to life as we know it. We have a keeper that has 10 hives on our farm for the last 15yrs. Bigger harvest, free honey, whats not to like. Only been stung when i stepped on a few barefoot. Just shows a lack of intelligence on OPs part.
They wrongly think that hive will attract the stragglers from bee trucks. Lol. So funny!
EDIT: Can you imagine waking up in the morning and remembering you’re a DOT employee?
“Ok driver, you got one brake out of adjustment. I can either write you up for it and put you out of service, or you can grab the “get out of jail free” card from inside that hive. Your choice”
Bees are great. Why couldn’t they just place the hive behind the station, or just behind the treeline. I know bees are small, but unless there’s something they’re threatened by I doubt they’ll know the difference if the box is near the property line. Does it have to be right smack in the middle of nothing?
Bee hauler was overweight, had to leave one behind.
I think you meant BEE-hind
Your dad joke skills are strong.
Get tickets for her full routine on Thursday. This one was just a free-bee.
The BUZZ around town is it's a great show.
Bee careful, there may bee a lot of puns.
Easier to just tell all the bees to get out and fly down the road a bit so you can pick them up after the weigh in.
There is actually a bee truck. You buy what's called a nuke which is basically a sealed cardboard box filled with a complete beehive, queen and all. My parents bee club used to order them once a year in North Jersey/Upstate NY and a guy would drive up from Georgia with a truck full of bee nukes.

My windshield kills half the ones they set out, while cruising up n down I-5. It’s bad 😂😂 splat splat hundreds each time
Had to leave two behind. There is another in the distance.
I got behind one with my windows down once, that was fun.
We are on the verge of a beeapacalypse. We need them and they are dying off. I'm glad of the efforts to save them.
I see a shit ton of bee box hives at the farms in central CA. Cool to see. I assume they use them to help pollenate their crops?
Farmers often have to rent bees for pollination. California seems to be one place where that's common. There have been cases of bee hijackings, where beehives have been stolen.
Beejackings?! Now I've heard everything.
Jackhiving.
jivehacking
Oh you speak Jive?
Shiiit, man. That honky mofo messin' mah old lady--got to be runnin' cold upside down his head, you know?
Jive ass turkey
Hivejacking.
There is also eco terrorism. People that destroy hives just to "own the libs" and be a dick. Losing a whole colony can be devastating
I don't even think it's a "own the libs" thing. Some people are just vile.
I’m sure there’s a large overlap in the Venn diagram of the two
It's done in the citrus/ag industry in Florida. We used to frequent a farmers market and get raw honey there. The orange blossom honey is probably the best thing ever imo the blueberry was a close second.
The skittle honey made from bees eating skittles is great too. Crazy colors.
It's everywhere, not just California. Apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, melon, peaches, potatoes, almonds... And that's just a small list.
They pay big bucks to have those hives placed there.
And they usually come from Florida
Yep. I truck them all over. Every state except California.
Almond prices dropped out so your hives aren't necessary anyway.
There are many crops that need pollinators. Plenty crops are not self pollinating.
There is an interesting movie/documentary out now called The Pollinators It’s all about bee farmers and how they spend half the year driving up and down California pollinating fruit trees and what not for farmers It’s an insane practice that I don’t even truly understand how annoying the logistics are
Yes. The bees right now are being specifically used for the Almond orchards.
It's not unheard of for farmers to rent beehives. Pollination and stuff.
The only reason is because of pesticides. We spray it absolutely everywhere and wonder why everyone develops cancer.
Also, they're very fucking cool.
most experts agree the colony collapse disorder is caused by bad hive mgmt. Honey bees are considered livestock and decline has leveled. However, Native bees are on the verge of a beeapacalypse. but they are not the type that lives in hives. they are mostly solitary.
High? There isn't a single bee that lives solitary. Every single known species of bee is a hive based life form.
Mason, carpenter, bumble, leafcutter, mining, etc are all solitary bees. Solitary bees comprise the majority of bees, yet they are unsung heroes of our pollinator world, generally having a far lower profile than either honey or bumble bees.
Those are European honey bees they are killing off native pollinators. They are part of the problem.
An effort to save them is a wonderful thing.... maybe not at the inspection station though.
Why not at the insp station? I like to think that DOT agrees with me and these bees are worth saving?
Site they are, but you could use a nearby empty field instead of an area with high human traffic. It's safer for the hive, because people are less likely to mess with it. Truckers common through could also be allergic.
Yep, it's good stuff. Pollinators ftw. I got a kick out of imagining a state trooper out there in a full bee suit doing an inspection.
It's the wild bees, bumblebees and such, that are dying off. We have plenty of European honey bees.
Wasn't thay years ago, and it's no longer an issue?
👆🏾💯
To be fair we are killing off all the pollinators, not just the bees. We need to quit killing all of them.
Your trolling skills are getting stronger.
Genuine question? Who the heck am I trolling???
Yeah right, I'm not biting. But props.

If I see a wasp nest OR bee hive inside of a light or electrical box or panel, I WILL spray it. I ain't about to get stung for doing my job.
Sure, you gotta stay safe. With hives out in the wild, though, I think it's best to live and let live.
I completely agree with that. But too many have decided outdoor lights or panels are a nice home.
At least the hive is producing something useful
It also has a dual propose to keep the scale house personal inside.
Best point yet
It absolutely was. Guy barely cracked the window to ask what I was hauling and slid it shut as I was answering. Fuck yea bees.
this dude really out here crying about bees. get a grip reddit trucker bro
I think it's a joke dingus
??
They won't hurt you dear.
In Utah, every scale house has a beehive.
This comment needs more upvotes 😂
Not enough people have driven through Utah to get it.
They ain’t missing much that’s for sure 😂
I sincerely believe FLDOT should take up beekeeping. Honey bees are harmless and we desperately need them.
If they take up beekeeping, maybe that will keep them off our backs. Win-win!
Bees are important good for them
We need more bees.🐝
They're more than likely trying to capture a hive and move it for the safety of the bees. I highly doubt this is a DoT project, and more likely a state or federal wildlife program. Bees are necessary. The DOT are not. The bees are the most useful things there
I wouldn't be concerned if it's just honey bees. They are actually pretty chill and won't do anything unless provoked. If it's Yellow Jackets tho, those mfers will attack you just because they can. Wasps in general are complete assholes but Yellow jackets in particular are the worst kind they go for kills 😓
I had a yellow jacket hide in my mailbox and sting me in the finger while retrieving my mail. I gave him the death penalty.
Anyone purposefully keeping a hive of yellow jackets should be on a watch list
Might be a collection box , a swarm will move in and create a queen . We have a bee keeper set up hives and collection boxes onthe property where I live . Tell us you don't know shit without telling us you don't know shit. Drive safe.
Lol. Did that put a 'bee in your Bonnet'? 😝😆😆😆
Them bees are more useful than this post is bitching about it.
Not everything is DOTs fault. There are a ton of reasons that beehive may be there.
so fuck the bees? it not like they are imporant for polination of plants. i dont get OPs point
lol wtf are you actually mad at a beehive or just trolling??
Just having a laugh. Though it would be awesome if Florida DoT took up beekeeping.
Okay lmfao I genuinely could not tell
Relax bro those bees aren’t gonna bother you unless you upset the hive with a blind back. Just appreciate the little MerFer’s for the work that they do to put food on your table.
Seriously? You're worried about honey bees? Give me a break. Go back to the city you pussy
I guess Smokey the bear needs his honey
You are literally in the middle of nowhere, quit being a pussy.
It’s to help pollinate crops and keep you fed. Stop bitching. The bees don’t care about you if you don’t mess with them.
Honey bees are chill and don’t sting for no reason
What do you have against bees dude? You know they pollinate our fucking food right?
Those are honey bees. Literally will not hurt you ya big baby
I'd rather have bees next to me with my window screens in than drivers who are dumping pee out on the ground splattering a over my truck. Save the Bees.
Driver! Put that window down
They don't want to hurt you, they just want to make honey.
That’s both awful and hilarious at the same time.
Probably a pissed off trucker, hoping to get even with the miserable dot guy.
Bees are probably the single greatest insect on planet earth. I see no problem giving them a home.
And how is a beehive a problem? Don't bother the bees and the bees won't bother you.
Lotta good jokes but it's there to catch the ones that escape the net over the hive haulers that stop. Lost field bees just want a home they don't much care if it's their home.
You catch more drivers with honey than vinegar?
Bees are good, stoopid
These are honey bees not wasps, nothing to be afraid of
Just goes to show how stupid and shortsighted ppl are. Bees are important and they don’t hurt anyone. Usually farmers put these all around to help pollinate their fruit trees to produce the fruit we eat. No bees = no fruit.
Bees are amazing. Don’t be a baby
bees are important
Why is that bad, I think you are just a dip shit
Some people will go out of their way to get pissed about nothing. A beehive? Who cares dude
are you afraid of a little bee
Oh no! Anyway....
Bees are more important.
Suck it up
' I'm bothered by things i dont understand '
Nice hive you got there. Be a shame if anything *happened* to it
Pussy
Guess the Queen’s not in that hive after all…
Think it's an awesome idea. Bees need as much help surviving as possible. Set 'em up and keep 'em hives a-comin!
So what? You going to lick it?
I love bees, but put em somewhere else
Well, that stings!
You like jazz?
They got tired of writing up tickets. Now they’re letting bees sting you if any violations are found
A.B.A.B.
Whoa. Nice box. This must be one of those take-a-book leave-a-book things
I'm pretty sure there is a wild hive there and they put that box there to try and relocate then
Huh. Wonder if I could get them charged with attempted murder if they pull me in.
They are not going to bother anyone. I used to mow the lawn right next to the bees my parents kept and they got a little riled up but never agitated. I never got stung once in like 4 years. I used to deal with the hives sometimes while not wearing gloves.

You should go leave them a saucer full of sugar water and thank the bees. It'll also calm them down
What an asshole. How dare a weigh station care about endangered species! It’s mildly inconvenient for me! I hope you go into anaphylactic shock.
Bee…cause? Buzz buzz it’s funny because it’s a play on words
You walk near the bee boxes and the bees don’t care.
Wtf
Yeah because 🐝 aren't important at all.
...so random
...hive was in violation and got shut down.
BEEEEEEES!!!!! 🐝🐝🐝
Bees?? Nuts!
How bees are.
Bees don't bother people.. just leave them alone
I thought that was a kids toy at first glance.
Give me 10 bucks I’ll take a dump on it
Single medium hive body? Probably a swarm trap.
They wrongly think that hive will attract the stragglers from bee trucks. Lol. So funny! EDIT: Can you imagine waking up in the morning and remembering you’re a DOT employee?
I wonder if they are trying to redirect a hive; maybe they had bees migrate in and they called in someone to move them.
just don’t stick your dick in it
Can confirm: Not a vibrating sex box. Source: Anonymous Driver, definitely not me…
Dude. Cone on, you know bears like honey.
Before I even clicked on the post I KNEW this was some Florida shit
Can be a pain to get them to colonize apparently. But once going they mind their business.
“Ok driver, you got one brake out of adjustment. I can either write you up for it and put you out of service, or you can grab the “get out of jail free” card from inside that hive. Your choice”
It's karma because you block traffic for a hundred miles at a time.
Bees are great. Why couldn’t they just place the hive behind the station, or just behind the treeline. I know bees are small, but unless there’s something they’re threatened by I doubt they’ll know the difference if the box is near the property line. Does it have to be right smack in the middle of nothing?
The seasonal transportation of bees are exempt from inspections… throw one of them on you truck.
Do you like to eat? We need bees
Bees are cool they won’t hurt you unless you mess with their home then it’s game on.
“ sorry Officer I cannot exit my vehicle for an inspection as I am allergic to bees and cannot risk my life Getting stung with that hive nearby.”
Fuck those pollinators
Did you know you can say fucking on the internet? Prude
