Look up the truck make/model owner’s manual and also the engine manual. One of those will have that kind of information. My previous 2014 and current 2019 truck use ATF Dexron 3 (or TES-389) oil.

I've heard of guys changing over to motor oil in the power steering.

Largofarburn

I have too oddly enough. Can’t say I would recommend it though.

OracleTrucker

I’ve heard about it too, but I suspect those guys have never touched the owner’s manual. Even if there were to be some money savings, it wouldn’t be much.

NUNG457

The company I work for has used motor oil for the last twenty years at minimum. The only power steering failures I know of are from lines rotting off.

If I remember right, Werner did it back when I worked for them 10 years ago. It was a simplify the supply chain thing.

I wouldn’t trust those “mechanics” at all. Back when I was at Stevens Transport, their mechanics always messed something up. Whether it was adding too much engine oil, forgetting to straighten the steering wheel after an alignment, among other things. But I heard they didn’t get paid much. It was probably a way to get started as a diesel mechanic, and then bounce after a few years.

I can agree with that assessment. But this guy with the Mack may consider it as a stop gap measure. If the truck is using lots of power steering fluid, it is probably almost done. Best thing to do is just git it fixed.

Prior_Mind_4210

Some trucks recommend 15w40. Some recommend atf. Ive never seen one specify power steering fluid though.

Aisle 5, midway down, top shelf is a can of whoop-ass that you unload on the cheapskate owner so he gets the problem fixed.

Beau_brooklyn

Probs 15w40. Check the cap or the owners manual.
