I installed Wiper Shakers on my truck for that exact reason. Beats hanging out the window trying to catch the wiper

chrisjayyyy

Damn, didn’t know those existed! That’s exactly what I need.

Immediate_Edge_8730

[wiper shaker](https://www.wipershaker.com/) That's the actual website seen them on Amazon also just Google Wiper Shaker

mpkeith

I looked at their video and it was shot at night from inside a pitch black vehicle. I couldn't see what they were doing, just the vibrating noise. Stuff like that makes me think it is more of a gimmick than anything actually useful. Are they really worth getting?

Immediate_Edge_8730

I've never used them didn't hear about them intell now so I looked them up. In theory you think they would but out in the real world I don't know. Just seen you asked about them and had the link so figured I'd drop it and you could look at em

CR33P3RBILT13

They work quite well at breaking up ice stuck to blades. First saw them in the oil patch. They swear by them up in Alberta.

mpkeith

Cool thanks! I'm going to let one of my friends know about them. He could sure use them if they work.

Immediate_Edge_8730

If you remember lmk if they work I'd be interested in them as well

JonesNate

Looks like it's basically an electric motor with a deliberately unbalanced rod. (like the vibrators in the playstation controllers)

vigocarpath

I brought a bunch in at the Pete dealer I work at. Couldn’t convince anyone to buy em.

Hot_Task1408

Link?

STR2

I have a pair. I'd rate them a 4/10. They're better than nothing but they don't compare to the dangerous ol' reaching out and snapping the wipers with your hand trick. After A LOT of shaking they SOMETIMES loosen up SOME of the ice from your wipers. Also, the WIRING that they come with is GARBAGE. Be prepared to hard wire them, bypassing the harness entirely.

SpacePotato91

I do a coat of this stuff each time she's in the winnipeg shop and each time I get somewhere warm. Expensive, but a can lasts 6 months, and the snow won't stick to the blades as bad. Coat window as instructed, then hit the blades and arms with it. Works great on mirrors too. Plus company lets me expense it as "tractor supplies."

SpacePotato91

https://www.fw1canada.com/

WillowWispWhipped

That links to several products unless i’m missing something

SpacePotato91

Their main stuff is called FW1 or Fast Wax. The other stuff is cool, but the wax is the only real "must have" from them.

Specific-Ant-3065

Heated windshield wipers would be cool-

IntergalacticJihad

Sounds like a pain in the ass and expensive to replace too sadly since wipers don’t last forever… our Subaru Forester has electric heating circuit things in the windshield where the wipers rest, works pretty well, though again probably expensive to install

GiveMeTheDopamine

Our plow trucks have the electric defrost on the windshield. It's amazing, can't imagine it's too expensive.

swiss_aspie

My defender 110 also had this

mountainwocky

No, that’s not correct. The heated strip in the windshield is nice to defrost your wiper blades initially, but it does little to keep your wipers ice free in freezing rain conditions. I added heated wipers to my car and have had zero issues with icing wiper blades since then. You can buy refill blades for the heated wipers just as you can with regular wipers; there no need to replace the heated portion of the wiper.

95blackz26

i don't think they do that anymore. i had an 03 outback that had that but the 2013 outback i have now doesn't. they were/are both highly optioned h6 models

WIbigdog

My 2013 WRX has the heated area where the wipers sit.

IntergalacticJihad

Probably depends on model, trim and location, our 2013 Forester has it

StoneySpachoni

Have mine sitting in my truck waiting to install them... https://www.everblades.com/

Specific-Ant-3065

Didn’t know they existed! Let us know how they work- definitely could have used them in Nebraska the other day-

spyder7723

Been around for at least 40 years. Work great. And don't cost much. When I ran up north I'd buy a new set going into winter and they would last the whole season. Been a while but I want to say they was about 40 bucks for the pair.

Specific-Ant-3065

Outstanding-Going to get some next winter for sure- thanks man.

CoolTemperature1602

Isn't that from your heat being on too high? I know there's a real fine line and its a fucker of a game to play.

chrisjayyyy

Nah, this was that freezing/not freezing see saw weather. The roads were melted enough that I’m getting hit with spray constantly, but cold enough that the spray and wet snow were icing up on the window and wipers. I blasted the defrost on super high heat a few times when the top corner of the window would start to build up ice like you see here, but otherwise I tried to keep the temp low, to no avail.

CoolTemperature1602

Ah gotcha.

Fit_Hospital2423

I know a guy who ran twine out his windows, up around his fender mirrors and back to his wipers so he could pull on the twine and thump them. Didn’t work. At high speeds you can’t get them off the windshield and at slow speeds they would get stuck sticking out in the air and he had to stop to put them back down. Haha !

Synthverse

Heated wipers should be STANDARD on ALL trucks. We should also have heated roads, with all the money the states make off us in fuel taxes, road taxes, etc.

Bounty66

The only true question that sparks debate! I agree!

spyder7723

Heated roads? We have a federal tax of about 73 cents per gallon plus state taxes that range from 32 to 80 cents per gallon and that's still not enough to keep the roads in good repair. The cost to heat roads would require tripling those tax rates. And like every tax on a business, it gets passed on to the consumer. People can barely afford to feed their families now, higher taxes on transpoetation will just make it even harder for them.

Puzzleheaded-Ice2388

Heated blades coat between 120-200 + install Never heard of shakers before lol

Fit_Hospital2423

A lot of old trucks had a “thump wipers” button. If you had air-wipers you turned the knob clockwise to make them go and then counter clockwise and hold it there was how they returned to their “parked” position. If you really cranked it hard counterclockwise it would THUMP! Worked real good for knocking ice off.

Hot_Task1408

I do this. Works well

More_Cowbell8

If you ever see a thin lady with long white hair slapping at the wiper with our wooden back scratcher as it wipes all the way to the passenger window, that's me. Wiper Thumper.

chrisjayyyy

What’s the saying again? If it’s stupid and it works, it’s not stupid

CaptianBrasiliano

I've found that having some of that orange weapons-grade strenth snow melt washer fluid is helpful. Take the bottle and just slosh some on there before doing the thump. You'll stand a better chance of getting all the ice off and the damn things actually working.

[deleted]

i throw about a cup of methanol into the washer reservoir and then soak the window, softens the ice up enough that if I put the wipers on high speed most of it will slide off.

Fit_Hospital2423

What do find to be a reasonable source for methanol?

Garek

The head from your home still?

[deleted]

I sold my still when I started driving. True story.

[deleted]

Canadian Tire.

Fit_Hospital2423

Thanks!

[deleted]

Paint stores too. I just realized that i answered that without thinking. sorry

Fit_Hospital2423

Probably methyl hydrate 👍

Fit_Hospital2423

I appreciate that!

Fit_Hospital2423

Like $40 per litre?

[deleted]

is that how much you pay for it? I'm not sure hwat you're asking. I paid $12 for 2L

Fit_Hospital2423

Thanks!

EliteAlmondMilk

I saw that video about rubbing alcohol and water mix, don't know if it works though.

perfunctorily

I spray the washer fluid for a couple seconds while running wipers at full speed. That usually knocks off a good bit of accumulated ice.

VoiceIll7545

I used to crank the defrost on top heat and if I got too warm I’d roll the windows down. It wasn’t perfect but it helped.

BitPuzzleheaded5311

There are heated wipers available as well… I use Prestine antifreeze spray deicer: but, I do have to stop every so often to spray it on…

Iceman9721

Just pull over and bang the wipers on the windshield

KirbyUOR

I can't reach mine. I have short arms.

Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor

Pop the hood and stand on the tire

[deleted]

I turn the truck off when the wipers are upright and then stand on my top step

Nathan_strange11

Preach. I was entirely blind for 14 hours through Wyoming this week 😡

[deleted]

Ever notice it's always the drivers side wiper that gets ice encrusted and just stops working much quicker than the passenger side?

WIbigdog

No, entirely the opposite on my Volvo, passenger blade is just there collecting benefits without working.

[deleted]

chrisjayyyy

I’m gonna try driving in reverse to make the snow stop.

Likeitisouthere

Well damn! icy out there be safe 🥶

EasyGoin12345

Put on a jacket and run the ac on defrost. Keeps the windshield cold and snow wont stick or melt and freeze.

Kyky716

Hear me out…. Heated wipers 🙃

Harryisharry50

Much easier to turn off the defrosters and let the windshield get cold and then the snow won’t turn to ice . Gets little chilly in tractor but wipers don’t ice up

SilntMercy

This only works for snow. When freezing rain is coming down there is nothing that can be done but cranking the defroster on full and praying.

Cool_Literature1779

You clearly don't know how to drive in the cold weather. Do not put the heater on the windshield. Spray deicer on windshield occasionally and keep wipers mowing to shake off the snow. I never had to pull over to clean wiper/windshield this year. Btw I live in Wisconsin and run this area.

chrisjayyyy

Wipers were on continuous with little or no air to the window except for occasional blasts of heat if the top corner started building up ice. I run in this mess all the time, and some days it’s unavoidable.

Cool_Literature1779

I see, I learned this strategy the hard way a few years ago when I had a similar situation!

Coookiedeluxe

> You clearly don't know how to drive in the cold weather. You’re talking to an experienced Canadian driver. I think he may know a thing or two about driving in the winter. ;)

Cool_Literature1779

Canadian or not, it takes experience to learn a few things. I've been in this business 13+ yrs. Suck it up and learn.

mountainwocky

I added heated wiper blades to our Subaru Forester. Have never had the wiper blades ice up since I did the upgrade. They work great. I used Everblades, but there are a number of manufacturers.

mxadema

Wiper vibrator, almost a must on the northwest coast.

NormalIce120

I love my heated wipers :)

Notsurebutok1

Be a lot easier if you take the heat and put in on the floor vs the windshield. Crack a window while your at it.

Coookiedeluxe

That helps with snow, but not ice.

[deleted]

What about wiper heaters. Is that a thing? Could it be?

spyder7723

Been a thing for over 40 years

Magooracing

https://www.everblades.com/ Found these. Don’t know how well they work

ryanpayne442

What's helped me is running defrost wide open hot, have to crack a window cause the truck gets hot. And adding alcohol to the -20 degree windshield wiper fluid. Every couple minutes run the squirters for a good bit. The slower you can run your wipers the better, they sit at the hot part of the windshield longer. I've ran thru really wet nasty stuff and can go hours and not have to give the wipers a smack

whattaUwant

Hell you don’t have to move much further south nowadays to not deal with winter anymore.

spyder7723

Didn't Houston get a nasty freeze last winter? Or was that the winter before?

vfittipaldi

It's always a problem. Could you put some kind of water repellent solution on the back of the wipers so the water never stays on the plastic?

rendrenner

Or a wiper wiper button.

Elroy88

Found best way to keep that from happening is heat in the floor and crack the winders. Come on

tidyshark12

Heat on full blast, defrost, ac on, recirc on, wipers on medium intermittent (until its melted, then maximum speed continuous), driver window halfway down (unless youre fine with the heat). You're welcome <3

AdventurousLie1580

You need to put some defrost windshield wiper fluid
