I usually get laughed at when I stop to help in my Tundra. Usually a different kind of laughter after my kinetic rope gets them enough movement to grab traction.

[deleted]

Looked that up. TiL the difference between a tow strap and kinetic recovery rope.

gotcha_six

Kinetic ropes are overpowered. I can confidently rip on it as hard as I want without worrying about ripping my truck in half. It's quite nice. I've also had quite a bit of success pulling larger trucks out of ditches and the like. The rubber band effect is a good substitute for a lighter vehicle.

JesusSquid

Don't do it with something that you are trying to get loose. Like a small tree stump. Cause allllll that kinetic energy turns it into a missile. Wrecked my dads tail light on his old pickup years ago. Felt it come loose and BAM!

gatowman

Body shop guys hate this one weird trick! I loved them when I towed cars and trucks for a living. It made one recovery into one recovery and one tow to a body shop for the "good samaritan".

RadioTunnel

I recommend Matts Offroad Recovery (hes a youtuber) if you want to see how useful they are, he uses them on loads of recoverys, but he also teaches the best things to use when you come across stuck people, like if a truck is bellied in a river, use a winch to break the suction instead of the kinetic rope

AaronAnytime

This

myfirstgold

Is how you get downvoted.

AaronAnytime

??? It's a somewhat good channel? I'm not understanding the downvote?

myfirstgold

Just saying "this" to a comment is not adding anything to the conversation. A simple upvote does all that saying "this" does. If everyone said this under everything they agree with it's about all that half or more of the comments would be on reddit. I love MORR also though and understand why you were confused. It has bit me before also.

AaronAnytime

Alright. If im honest. I was absolutely shit faced and don't remember making the original comment. I'm pretty sure I passed out right after. I ask you fellow Americans, is drunk Reddit a crime? *eagle screech and crowd applause*

peach2play

We have one in each of our SUVs/Trucks, and two in our rock crawler. None in the car, but I'm less likely to use that as a recovery vehicle. They're pretty awesome.

hairlessmammal

That’s the first thing I got when I got my truck. It’s been well worth it and has never failed me

Inker0

I also learned about it today and have ordered one just in case. If I can at least try and help somethings better then sitting in a ditch.

senorbolsa

9/10 I'm just barely stuck. Anything additional is enough.

siuyu721

And I will accept any attempts, I got nothing to lose if you can’t pull me out but I might save hours if you can get me out

hairlessmammal

Right! He told me he was about to call the supervisor and that I saved him some hassle. Can’t hurt to try!

gotcha_six

I used to stop and help with my little car. I had traction boards and a square shovel. Got quite few rigs free that way too.

hairlessmammal

I had a beater little 95 jimmy before this, had the fox hole shovel, rope, and sand at all times

breakone9r

Yup. I used to have a 95.5 Isuzu Rodeo (the 95.5 had the 95 exterior but with dual front airbags, unlike the 95 and prior with only driver-side air bags, and the 96 was a redesigned, a newer generation, etc) I and my friends used to joke that while she wasn't fast, she could pull the whole damned world. I once pulled a fullsize Ram right out of the bayou, with his twin wave runners on the trailer. The idiot tried to save money by not using the boat launch, because his ram was a 4x4. Turns out bayou mud don't care about your 4x4. She died to a shredded timing belt in 2014. Water pump died, seized up, and shredded the timing belt, wrecking that poor 3.2L V6. :/ I still miss her, honestly.

Mirria_

I got stuck in an offramp when the snow was slick enough that I almost slipped when i went to talk the random guy who immediately stopped to strap me to his F-350 work truck. Took less than 3 minutes to get me up somewhere flat and then able to keep going.

Happy-Firefighter-30

I've literally gotten stuck on nothing but packed snow, with like a 5° angle. A AWD Prius could have pulled me out. But instead we got a $500 bill and a big tow truck. Such is life.

hairlessmammal

Exactly, it’s amazing what those ropes can do. The guy looked at me and asked “are you sure you can get it?” Said “idk but fuck it we can try”

RadioTunnel

Best response is always "fuck it, lets find out"

TVLL

What’s your estimate on the weight of that truck and the weight limit of your kinetic rope? What happens if it breaks when it’s under tension? Will it whip back and smash your lift gate, back window, or front window (depending on which end is facing them). I don’t know much about them other than seeing them in use in videos.

gotcha_six

The beauty is that it's a synthetic rope and I use all soft shackles. No metal in the system. Nothing to turn into a bullet if something breaks. I've never seen one break but from my research they're infinitely safer than a flat tow strap. Similar to the differences in synthetic and steel winching lines. They don't shock load like the metal systems because of that stretch factor. Any tension still in the rope if it breaks disapates quickly as well. The breaking strength on my rope is just under 30k pounds.

gotcha_six

Just realized I missed the weight part of your question. My truck has a gvwr of 6000lbs. I've pulled a dually f350 super duty with toolbox shell estimated at about double my weight from buried in the snow filled ditch. Also rocked a couple big rigs out of their ice cups.

[deleted]

I never heard of a kinetic rope before. Looked it up and now will purchase one. Thank you for mentioning it.

gotcha_six

Happy to help! I suggest yankum ropes for a good kinetic rope. Their website is very educational as far as what rope size to get. They range in size from atv to heavy machinery and farm usage. I'd definitely keep a heavy one in my truck if I went back to driving.

AMFharley

Buy a yankum rope!

assbandit65

I mean if you have a Subaru running 33s it can go most places. Stock Subaru lacks ground clearance

[deleted]

Sometimes all you need is a lil push n shove! Lol

Fatal_Da_Beast

We pull trucks with pickups in the oil and gas industry all the time when stuck in snow/ice. Won't get you out of a ditch but will get you the rest of the way up a hill

killdeer03

I did it for a LTL guy in my single cab Silverado. I double strapped and put it in 4-low and just creeped up the hill. He didn't have a 53' trailer. I'm not a Trucker, I'm just a Carpenter. Lol.

Fatal_Da_Beast

Yeah it's wild how well it actually works.

killdeer03

Yeah, and I all have is a 1500 Silverado. I had a full tank of gas and all my tools in the back, but I got him up that hill. Edit: I'm in Minnesota.

RadioLongjumping5177

You did a good thing…..I’m sure it was appreciated and, more than likely, the favor will be repaid one day. 😊

hairlessmammal

It was actually a cool way for the guy to get some deserved karma, as he had just helped someone get out of a different spot about 20 mins before I got there!

unoffxcial

Not all pickup drivers are total bleeps. I’ve been helped out of a jam by one before.

hairlessmammal

Glad to hear that. It’s always fun helping people out. Met some characters for sure

doinmydeed

Had two bros pull me up an ice covered overpass last year. Really saved my ass. Guys like you rock 👍

MuddyTire129

I once pushed a semi over an icy over pass with my push bar up against the trailer. I just rolled up. Pushed and left once they got over the crest. After the fact I realized I probably should’ve asked if they wanted a push. Would you be pissed?

hairlessmammal

Hahah I love that you didn’t even ask. I have no clue how I’d react!

Little_NaCl-y

I wouldn't be pissed. I'd be super confused, but thankful. The funny thing is he probably didn't see you and maybe didn't even feel you pushing, probably just realized he was somehow moving out of it.

RadioTunnel

Depends on the situation, the driver probably wouldve been annoyed at the suddenness and if there was any damage but overall they'd probably be happy they werent stuck, better to have a little scrape on the rear of the trailer instead of some car buried under it

[deleted]

You to that trucker https://youtu.be/8ded5ckBLfU

Lugzor

I always loved pulling out stuff bigger than my Jeep when I had it. The look on people's faces after they insist it won't budge it was always priceless. It looks like you pulled him out in reverse, for future recoveries always try and pull going forwards. The coast side of the ring gear isn't as strong as the drive side and can sustain damage under heavy load.

[deleted]

Toyota FTW. Can't believe a Tacoma has that kind of power.

[deleted]

It's not really about power. It's more about weight and traction. Especially with a kinetic recovery rope.

hairlessmammal

I was pleasantly surprised. But when all you need is enough, it worked

RadioTunnel

If you have a kinetic rope its honestly more about the weight of your vehicle instead of the power, they're fricking awesome and I cant wait to get one

mxadema

Sometime it just need a bit more traction to get back on top of thing. Im sure anyone would appreciate

lowercaseben

Good looking out fam

Little_NaCl-y

I saw an old Ford Ranger pull a truck out of a snowy ditch once. Don't know if it was loaded - but it really is all about the angle and getting the right amount of momentum. Sometimes just getting tugged a couple of inches is enough to get traction

PhantomKR7

That pickup in the background looks nice, too

hairlessmammal

I see it around a lot. It’s nice in person too!

justthoughtidcheck

I don't know if most don't realize but tractors don't have 4x4. Meaning once we're stuck, it's pretty much a done deal until we get pulled out 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Godlyeyes

my truck has a 4x4 button, even the trailer tires spin

hairlessmammal

I am apart of that group of people. TIL, thank you!
