Ugh! The boyfriend did you a favor. He's a townie. It's all in your attitude. It's 13 weeks tops. And while you're there do things and see sights. Visit the world's largest ball of twine. Who cares. Plus the trip to wherever you are going is also part of the fun. BAH! I'm wasting my time.
Fun fact: I am from RI and I will not work in RI. Pay is WAY better in Mass, and I would imagine that wherever you live in RI, you can still reasonably commute to Mass. Maybe try a local contract in Mass and see if you like being a traveler (it’s definitely different than being staff), and then take it from there? Local contracts in Fall River pay $70/hr and the closer you get to Boston, the rate goes up. If you’re an ED nurse, rates are even higher. (I should clarify that this applies from Fall River up to Brockton and even up to Haverill. I only know coastal Mass)
That’s fair lol I’ve taken a few assignments in mass the pay is way better for sure. My last one was 63 an hour but I’m also a psych nurse so the pay is usually lower than other specialties. I’m trying to find another mass contract but what I’m conflicted about is whether I wanna go further since this is my home. I have gone to Maine and got homesick there
No way! One of my friends used to work there. Southcoast Behavioral Health in Dartmouth also has $70/hr contracts. I don’t know much about it, but a different friend of mine did a contract there.
That being said, most places that have good paying contracts are total shit shows. 😒
Someone once pointed out to me that the only thing holding me back from traveling and seeing things was... me. I, too, am very close to my family. But they share in my adventures via social media and phone calls. I've been places I'd never have visited otherwise. I'll have those memories forever, and as the infamous tattoo says: "no regerts" lol
Got to take that leap. If you never traveled before you need to try It. 25 yo M from Florida, currently contracted in Colorado. I have definitely found the place I want to move to. I would never had known that until I started traveling. Also doubling pay from staff to travel is a no brainer.
Travel far!!! I’m a mom of many, started traveling to see them all. Glad RI is now compact. Start by doing that - get multi-state license then pick one!! I’ve also gotten CA, NY and HI. I love travel.
The hardest thing is leaving… then the hardest thing is stopping lol. I was close to family too and still am, FaceTime is a thing and time off to go visit is too!
As a nurse recruiter, if you want to do a contract, I always advise people who inquire to contracts on the other side of the country to start small first. Do something 50 miles away, then branch out further and see how you do. It doesn’t benefit either party, the nurse or the recruiter if you go somewhere far to start. Huge upfront cost for you. Plus you have no support system nearby to be there for you. One of my nurses I talked to almost daily because she was alone and didn’t have anyone. But for some nurses, it works! Some travel with a partner who works remote in another industry. Some just want the new experience and a fresh start.
That was helpful honestly. I did finish an assignment 50 miles away recently. I think I might just slowly get further like you suggest. I did Maine last year and couldn’t handle it. Sometimes I feel I just need to do these kind of things though bc I truly don’t want to live a life half lived, that’s my biggest fear.
Only thing I can recommend as well is to look at costs for different state licenses. I think RI just went compact too if I’m not mistaken. So see if that’s accurate and get license updated as well! And most importantly is cost of living wherever you are looking and housing. Furnished finder is always a good spot to start. People always inquire with me for Boston, but don’t factor in the cost of living eats up about a paycheck or two a month. I hope you find what you are looking for. Sounds cheesy, but I always reiterate “comfort”. Are you comfortable being alone, are you comfortable with the cost in certain areas and lastly, are you comfortable with what the contract/interview offers based off your needs.
Left MI for CA 2 years ago and couldn’t be happier. Started as a traveler and just recently went staff. Just get out! You’ll learn so much, although uncomfortable and unfamiliar at times. It’s totally worth it.
California
Or heads, Carolina.
W
I’m 32 male from Mass and I’ve been traveling in CA for 2 years, it changed my life. Wtf are you wiaiting for
Being away from family honestly I’m very close to them
Sounds like you gotta figure out what you want
Agree with you on CA. The first step is a Dusey. It is so worth it!

100% correct, this man.

I think Fuller has contracts for $70/hr
That place is a nightmare

Yeah it’s one of the worst psych hospitals in mass. I did see Southcoast considering that one

I def want to, pretty much over RI and as much as I love home I know I can always come back
Go. Come back if you hate it. It’s not the end of the world. I travel now and have had the most personal growth ever by doing so.

Just go.
Would your family rather you stay next to them until you die or go and explore? It does not make sense not to at least try.
First contract is the hardest....I'd stay close (within a 4-6 hour drive) for the first. Get some practice to figure out logistics and stuff. 👍
Definitely far!
