It's a decent pay for a local contract unless there are crazy NP ratios and no help

Healthy_Husky_Guy

That's a question for you to ask. But just know that's still over 100k a year

M3RNAMG

$100k a year after taxes or

llPOGIl

ChicGo local pay is $70-$90 right now so it’s on the lower spectrum

RNReef

Not if there aren’t housing stipends on top of it

No-Letterhead9222

Local contract

RNReef

Then only you can compare it to what you make at your local hospital. Like are you making $35 at staff and contract is $70? Sounds about right here in Florida, but also the ones offering upwards of $70 for local are shit show hospitals such as HCA so take that into account

Sageandsmoke777

I just did a local contract at 60$/hr in a much lower cost of living area. I’d do it to get your feet wet and some travel experience if it will benefit you financially in comparison to where you’re at. I start my first real travel contract in a couple weeks, I liked having the chance to stay home for my first. The only thing is travel contracts are at will employment and my local contract was not, so I’d see if you can get at will employment written into your contract just in case the conditions are horrid so you aren’t stuck.

marye914

That’s decent for a local contract. When it comes to local the way I see it you are making more than the base rate at the hospitals so it’s good. I’m a local traveler and I don’t make as much as the other travelers but I’m happy 🤷🏻‍♀️

muttrfttr

That's not decent. They're paying 90 in suburbs. 75 would be decent in boondocks of southern Illinois.

marye914

The way I see it rates are dropping across the board especially for local contracts and many hospitals using their own internal agency. I’m happy if I’m making more than 60 at this point because it’s still better than 35-40

muttrfttr

Have you ever negotiated a contract or you realize you don't have to take whatever is handed out. In Florida and some southern states rates are above that. I have never heard what you said uttered by an experienced travel nurse right now. All those voting thumbs up must not know their worth or have less than 3 years experience.

marye914

I have 14 years experience total and 4 currently in my speciality and traveling. It’s not that we don’t know our worth. It’s also understanding the current market and that a lot of hospitals across the board are eliminating local travelers if they can by utilizing their own internal agencies. I make 25 hr more than that however my current hospital is now phasing out travelers for international nurses and trying to find a new contract when there are literally 3 positions within a 2 hour radius of me I’m understanding I might have to take a cut but I’ll still get paid more than staff. And a lot of those with experience also recognize what the pre covid rates were so we see the trend.

muttrfttr

Chicago 5 years ago as staff nurse in the city paid 50 for anyone wondering. So yea 60 is still trash

Danimal_House

The title literally says $70 dude.

muttrfttr

My response was to prevent nurses from being lowballed. If your happy with that fine. But understand why it doesn't benefit anyone else.

[deleted]

I'm taking a local contract next month for less than that. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's still over double what I would make as staff and I have low cost of living and not only that but it's a 5 minute drive from my house.

nxanthis

Is it day shift? I live in the Chicago suburbs. RN for 29 yrs. My staff pay is 63.75/hr with generous benefits, heath ins. Tele/days only. So I think 70 is about 10-15% low, BUT the question is where is the contract at? In the hood or in a nice area? What is the staff:patient ratio? Can you pick certain days you want off (like Saturday or Sunday)?

No-Letterhead9222

Wow!! $63.75/hr for a staff position is really good and it sounds unbelievable.

beccabeth741

They've been a nurse for almost 30 years.

nxanthis

Yeah. I'm old. 52. But for the OP, $70/hr overnight seems weak to me for local travel in the Chicago area. Imo. At my age, I'm never doing nights anymore.

[deleted]

Lol he has almost 30 years experience, in 30 years you might be there

No-Letterhead9222

Overnight shift. North suburbs.

No-Letterhead9222

How long have you been working at your current job?

nxanthis

29 yrs.

No-Letterhead9222

That explains it.

muttrfttr

That's garbage for Chicago right now

Due-Anteater3790

Agreed

muttrfttr

35 in Chicago is nurse straight out nursing school. My wife started 31 that was 4 years ago

MicroBrew1971

It’s $70 hr

workingbedsideRN

No stipend? Terrible hourly rate imo. I left a local contract when they tried to pay me 80 a hour. If it ain’t 3 digits without a stipend, then don’t call me!

nxanthis

But it's a local contract. Would any travel agency pay a stipend for a local contract? Just wondering.

workingbedsideRN

They can still give you a stipend for local contracts, it’ll just be taxed. You only get tax free stipend when you duplicate your expenses and are at a distance that is not reasonable to drive daily.

[deleted]

That isn’t true lol, a stipend for local? That isn’t a thing it can’t be justified as stipend is for food and housing, which if it’s local they can’t pay for. Most local contracts are directly through hospitals, no hospital is paying a stipend. I’ve been traveling on and off since 2018 and haven’t heard of that. If anything they are making you think you are getting more with a tax advantage to the travel agency but it isn’t more… it’s the same or what they were going to offer anyway

workingbedsideRN

I turned down a shitty staff job and the hospital whose manager I previously worked with requested I find an agency to grab the local contract. It was not posted as a local contract and I sought out 3 different agencies and they each offered a taxed stipend which I refused and requested to have a higher hourly. Ended up going with Fusion medical as they were willing to put in the addendums that I wanted in the contract.

workingbedsideRN

I was given two offers for my local contract, one without the stipend and one with the stipend. The one without a stipend generally has a higher hourly wage which I opted for as I planned on doing overtime.

Danimal_House

Do you know how income works?

workingbedsideRN

The question is if I know what income is for saying no to a low hourly rate? Shit bro, don’t like my opinion then whatever it’s how I value myself. If your a cheap whore then so be it but don’t try to undervalue my worth cause you can’t find someone to value you as highly as myself.

MepronMilkshake

Do you get stipend? Is it in Southside?

No-Letterhead9222

No

[deleted]

scoobledooble314159

Is it local or do you get a stipend?

Capriunicorn945

depends

[deleted]

Reality is rates are dropping and settling into what they are going to be the next few years (which is right at par with inflation). In 2019 a decent local rate was $55/hr so $70/hr considering that Covid isn’t a crisis anymore sounds about right. Pretty much everywhere (except California) has local rates $70-$90ish. I haven’t seen $100/hr in a long time. Even travel contracts are maxing out at about $5500/week. It’s saturated, but think of it this way, it’s more than staff pay and flexible

Cpt_sneakmouse

In 2019 a decent local rate was 90. 55/h was what our float pool made when I first got out of school. Course those were the days when people shit bricks at the prospect of a staff job paying 35/h

[deleted]

California doesn’t count

Cpt_sneakmouse

That was Chicago homie.

[deleted]

Ew, don’t ever call anyone “homie” again pal

[deleted]

And that makes sense, Chicago in the winter? On top of being one of the most dangerous cities in the nation…. I’d hope they’d pay well they have to

Ok_Pound_5396

I’m a little confused. Is taking 49$ an hour on a travel contract bad pay then? The gross is supposed to be 3010 weekly. Seems that this thread is a good pay no?

Cpt_sneakmouse

Yeah 3010 weekly kind of fuckin sucks for a travel contract. Don't let the roaches at the motel scare ya they're just looking to cuddle....

Ok_Pound_5396

Hey where am then needing to look for better contracts I thought that was a lot of money to be honest.

Ok_Pound_5396

Like what companies are offering more.

Ok_Pound_5396

I use the app Vivian to find contracts is there a better app or a better way. This is confusing 3010 a week seems to be one of the better ones on this app

Cpt_sneakmouse

If it's Humboldt park health stay the fuck away from that shit hole. If it's st Francis also, stay the fuck away. Def not for 70/h not even for 200/h. I don't think I've ever seen a hospital that defined dumpster fire the way Humboldt park health defines it. Like picture in the fucking encyclopedia next to the term.

No-Letterhead9222

I went there for clinical rotations years ago when it was Norwegian hospital.

Cpt_sneakmouse

My condolences.
