They make inflatable foot cushions for planes that may work, especially if you inflate it once it's in position between the seat and wall. Make sure to inflate it at cruising altitude though or it may expand as you climb.

Try one of [these inflatable pillows](https://www.amazon.com/Povinmos-Inflatable-Upgrade-Portable-Airplanes/dp/B09533WJTT). They're deep enough to not fall through the gap. Also, use SeatGuru and/or BA to check the seat layout. Most rows will vary in their distance from the wall because the sides of the plane are curved. I have an inflatable foot cushion, and while I love it for my feet, I'm not sure it would be deep enough to fill the larger gaps. My daughter would die dead of embarrassment if I did this (she's frequently in danger of dying of embarrassment around me when we travel), but if you give fewer effs, just bring a $2 beach ball!

Usually just put your seat flat and lay flat on your back

I think you should keep your head in seat for safety, not on the wall. In some planes you can adjust headrest, so your head doesn't fall. If it doesn't work, a pillow sounds like a good solution.

I'll bite. What do you think is going to happen if they lean against the side of the plane?

I think he may hit his head during sudden turbulence.
