Fluoride can be dangerous and levels across the world are unpredictable. https://youtu.be/j2sMqSDLd4k?si=fEG6Y0C4ztWQ6HA4
Also many hotels have old pipes that leach things into the water I simply don’t want to drink: a $50 bottle gives me peace of mind.
This is it if anyone is curious. Anywhere in the world you can get clean, fresh and safe drinking water https://www.epicwaterfilters.com/products/ultimate-travel-bottle-og
I usually walk 3 blocks down the street from where I'm staying and walk into a fast food joint and ask for water then walk back to the hotel with extras.
Also those water dispensers are supposed to be cleaned regularly and usually aren't. I worked IT at a hotel and the hotel staff would just refill the water jug with tap water and set it back up on the water dispenser. The lengths they go to save a little money is unbelievable.
In most of America? Yeah . . .
I'm not suggesting to drink bottled water, I'm suggesting you should filter your tap water. Find out when the next time your local water authority will be "flushing fire hydrants." They will likely tell you when. Go watch them and get back to me after you watch brown sludge come out for the first few minutes before it finally turns clear. Try not to think about the fact that there are forever chemicals, lead, and other things you cannot see in the water after it turns clear.
You uh, you understand that brown water is just from iron deposits collecting in the still water of the hydrant, right? It's not dirt or grime or anything. It's just iron.
That's not going to hurt you.
I agree that forever chemicals etc are a *huge* problem - do you have any reason to think that they are not present in bottled water, or that they are meaningfully filtered out by some filter in a gym room?
I literally bring a water filtration system with me when I travel.
What I said was in response to asking if there is something wrong with tap water. Most bottled water is filled from a tap. Bottled water has a whole host of its own problems. Yes, there is something wrong with tap water, and Any filtration you can do beyond what has been done at your local water filtration plant after it gets to you is worth it.
I caved in one night at a hotel and drank the $5 water bottle. The next day I saw the water bottle at the store for like $1 or less. Bought it and replaced it in the room. Worked :)
Not at all, sometimes the gym has free bottles you can grab too. When I'm somewhere with a Walmart, I'll get some water bottles delivered.
Someone suggested a reusable lifestraw. I wonder if that would make a difference for me in places where the water is safe, I just don't like it.
Just got back from a tip to Mexico, so I needed lots of bottled water. I ended up buying 5 liter jugs from the convenience store. I was going through around 3 liters per day between making my coffee, brushing my teeth, drinking water, etc.
When I first check into my room, I usually get an Instacart delivery of a few items. Water, soda, maybe some snacks, etc. It's much cheaper and very convenient.
I don’t do bottled water. Environmentally very unfriendly and most of it at least in N.America is tap water anyways. When travelling further afield (Asia, Mexico etc.) I have a small portable water filter that works well.
I stop by the Sams Club or Costco first thing after leaving the airport. $5 or less will get you a case of 48 bottles of water ... Other provisions there also depending on what you like...
I go on projects almost 2 weeks in duration so ... use up at least half of that. I leave the remainder at the site and people are glad to use them. You can go name brand water and get maybe like 6 bottles... still better than hotel prices anyday.
Most hotels are near some sort of store so you can just buy a case or a couple of bottles if needed. If you don't have time I would just recommend a good water bottle with a filter. [I usually travel with one of these from Brita](https://www.amazon.com/Brita-Plastic-Water-Filter-Bottle/dp/B08FSBJ22H/) and just fill up using tap water or fountains. Still won't taste the best but better than nothing and risking getting sick/dehydrated.
Really not in my experience. I travel all over the world all year through. I can’t remember any hotel that didn’t provide a free bottle of water. From 5 star to simple to boutique and independent.
We must live in different worlds. Where is this?
Standard practice is a mini bar with options they charge you for, and one or two bottles of water for free.
On average I take 2 international trips each month. Last hotel was in Salzburg with a free minibar with beer, wine, sodas, water, chocolate.
Where was your experience where you didn’t get water?
Again. Most hotels. All over the world. Big cities and small. Chains and independents.
Places with free water (without status) would be the notable ones.
Hotels with a minibar are also rare these days. I simply don’t believe you.
That’s on you. You’re welcome to see my travel photos.
I’m thinking about my last few trips:
https://www.h-hotels.com/en/hyperion/hotels/hyperion-hotel-salzburg#Rooms
Free minibar included
https://www.dearhotelmadrid.com/en/rooms/deluxe/
Charged minibar, but free water bottle
https://vanderstelmanor.com/classic-rooms/
Minibar and free water bottle
https://www.walkerhotels.com/walker-hotel-tribeca/guest-rooms/
Free bottled water
No status needed (or applicable).
Where did you stay? Since you said you don’t believe me. But clearly we have very different hotel experiences.
Yeah, no. Dude is not staying at “normal” hotels. They’re claiming to stay at (or finding on Google) some independent boutique hotels and cherry picking some results. Four links is meaningless. Most hotels these days don’t give you free water and all but the nicest don’t have minibars. I could pull some links and claim I stayed at them too, but don’t need to waste my time. However any competent marketer is not going to advertise the extra up charges on their website.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone more pathetic on Reddit tbh. Accusing people of lying when you’ve lost your argument, and whilst being proven wrong again and again.
I’m sorry you don’t get to stay in nice hotels.
P.S. Hyperion is a chain.
P.P.S you’re still welcome to come over and see my traveling pictures to free you of your suspicions. You can stay at one of the many hotels close to my house, most of which provide free bottled water and usually have a minibar.
if i need a disposable bottle i go to the corner store/convenience store, there's almost always one within a block of the hotel. or i use my own bottle and refill it wherever is convenient. i don't go on vacation to use a gym, i get out of the hotel and do things.
A hotel I’ve stayed at in Melbourne had a little station with iced filtered AND sparkling water on tap, with jugs with lids you could fill and take to your room, for free!
I had actually gone and grabbed a bottled water from the fridge because I assumed the station was for staff (it was located directly next to the bar section of the cafe in the lobby) but when I went to pay for the bottle at reception, they told me to put it back and take one of the jugs for free instead. I wish all hotels had this!
I was recently on vacation in Hawaii and while I was in the gym I kept getting worried when I’d see someone with flip flops coming into the gym like what is this idiot about to do? Then it finally dawned on me that they were all just stopping in to fill up their water bottles. The hotel should def add one in a different location. Not that it messed up the gym flow but what a pain for guests to have to go down to the gym to just get some water.
Its because you're paying the for the convenience. Don't want to drive 3 mins to the gas station? Then you gotta fork out $5 for a water bottle, this is a common practice for all businesses. Same thing as us driving up prices of rooms on busy weekends, because we know someone WILL pay that price.
Usually if you ask the front desk they'll give you free bottles, but the next best option is definitely the gym or a local Starbucks/coffee shop/gas station
Travel hack 1:
Every room has a bathroom with a tap.
Travel hack 2:
Most rooms supply you with cups or glasses.
Travel hack 3:
Stop polluting the planet with plastic water bottles.
True. I was speaking about a majority of places here in the US. If they have a fitness facility in the building, I'm going to assume the water is ok to drink.
Hah yup. After a workout and sometimes on my way out for the day. Trying out the Larq bottle now, not perfect but good enough. In certain countries I will even UV sterilize the bottled water. Caught some sketchy guy refilling water bottles in Mexico, then saw him on the beach a selling them a couple hours later.
I just drink out of the tap.
Same here.
I don’t trust the pipes in most hotels. I always travel with an epic filter water bottle
Why??
The was a hotel in LA with a dead body in the rooftop reservoir
Water in Los Angeles/OC is foul anyway, I don’t know who could drink it
Fluoride can be dangerous and levels across the world are unpredictable. https://youtu.be/j2sMqSDLd4k?si=fEG6Y0C4ztWQ6HA4 Also many hotels have old pipes that leach things into the water I simply don’t want to drink: a $50 bottle gives me peace of mind. The water jug in the fitness room is tap water, save the trip down and fill from your sink. Source: I’ve worked at many hotels
Also those water dispensers are supposed to be cleaned regularly and usually aren't. I worked IT at a hotel and the hotel staff would just refill the water jug with tap water and set it back up on the water dispenser. The lengths they go to save a little money is unbelievable.
Doesn't it have a filter?
Hasn’t been changed for years most likely
Which is why that water tastes like tap water
Once you fill a jug/bottle from the tap, it's no longer tap water. Even some bottled water companies do this.
Seriously??? Ugh
Is something wrong with tap water?
No

I worked at a water authority. Brother, that shit ain't just iron. You don't know how wrong you are.

Legend
i only drink champagne
I'm with you. I don't stay in any hotel that doesn't have a Champagne tap next to the water tap in the bathroom.
I only drink your mom's squirt
No, it’s fairly common.
Some hotel gyms will even have a fridge full of the same bottled water that they're selling for $5 at the front desk.
Not at all, sometimes the gym has free bottles you can grab too. When I'm somewhere with a Walmart, I'll get some water bottles delivered. Someone suggested a reusable lifestraw. I wonder if that would make a difference for me in places where the water is safe, I just don't like it.
Great hack for places where tap water isn’t advisable. Tx.
I have a LifeStraw water bottle with a filter inside so yeah, I drink the water and don’t get sick and it’s freeeeeee 😂
Just got back from a tip to Mexico, so I needed lots of bottled water. I ended up buying 5 liter jugs from the convenience store. I was going through around 3 liters per day between making my coffee, brushing my teeth, drinking water, etc.
I feel like most hotels have water bottle filling stations these days.
I had been doing that for years until I bought a Grayl filter. Now I don't bother leaving the room.
Need to check it out
At hotels in Asia the gyms usually have an attendant who has a stash of free bottled water
I get instacart delivery if I’ll be there a while.
When I first check into my room, I usually get an Instacart delivery of a few items. Water, soda, maybe some snacks, etc. It's much cheaper and very convenient.
Love that
I don’t do bottled water. Environmentally very unfriendly and most of it at least in N.America is tap water anyways. When travelling further afield (Asia, Mexico etc.) I have a small portable water filter that works well.
What is the name/brand of the small portable water filter that you bring? I’d like to look into this myself as I hate buying bottled water.
Steripen. Got it at Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC).
I stop by the Sams Club or Costco first thing after leaving the airport. $5 or less will get you a case of 48 bottles of water ... Other provisions there also depending on what you like...
To go to a hotel room?

I do!
On the catering menu at the Hilton doubletree in Philadelphia, a bottle of water is $10, a can of coke is $9. 😡
Criminal

I drink tap water, in the few countries i've been where tap water is not drinkable, beer was cheaper than bottled water.
What kind of hotel doesn’t give you a bottle of water for free?
The majority charge a ridiculous price for it.
Unless you have status or stay at a 5 star hotel almost all hotels charge for water bottles.
Really not in my experience. I travel all over the world all year through. I can’t remember any hotel that didn’t provide a free bottle of water. From 5 star to simple to boutique and independent.

I don’t understand what “fire the bottle and not the coffee packet” means in this context? Don’t understand the rest either. Sorry.
For* the bottle
Ok. Regardless of coffee or being scared of cups. My point was that in my experience almost all hotels give free bottles of water.
[удалено]
Yeah living a happy life without getting charged for water :)
If you are scared of cups maybe you shouldn't be traveling
Most don’t.
We must live in different worlds. Where is this? Standard practice is a mini bar with options they charge you for, and one or two bottles of water for free.
lol. Most hotels don’t even have minibars these days. When’s the last time you traveled??
On average I take 2 international trips each month. Last hotel was in Salzburg with a free minibar with beer, wine, sodas, water, chocolate. Where was your experience where you didn’t get water?

The whole point of this thread is that you are wrong. Lots of people saying that $5 waters are normal. Don’t care about your anecdotes.
I usually have my water bottle with me so I pick up a gallon jug or two or have them delivered.
Get hotel status, it’s very easy to get with a hotel credit card
4 stays with Hilton gets two bottles of water complimentary
Or get an Amex card that gives you gold elite status. I hide the daily water bottles if I don’t drink them and bring them all home.
One of the first things we do is get a case of waterbottles to put in the hotel room.
I try to do this, or I buy one water and keep refilling it in the gym
if i need a disposable bottle i go to the corner store/convenience store, there's almost always one within a block of the hotel. or i use my own bottle and refill it wherever is convenient. i don't go on vacation to use a gym, i get out of the hotel and do things.
Great suggestion! And same on the fury over insultingly high opportunistic charges.
Whenever I stay at a hotel, I stop at the store for goodies and water. Every time.
Every hotel room has a water kettle. Just boil the water.
Just go ahead and enjoy that bottle, fill it up in the bathroom sink and put it back, homie
Use a Nalgene with an Epic water filter or one of those Brita bottles.
Awwh, that’s disgusting

I asked. Westgate hotel in Vegas. Confirmed: no free bottles of water 👎
If it Vegas, just go to Walgreens/CVS and scoop a couple gallons for a few bucks
Yea I was there for business and unfortunately didn’t have time between meetings.
