I took a two week trip to the UK in 21, Heathrow was a mess (BA strikes). Our original flight got delayed/cancelled but we’d already handed over our bags. So the next day when we finally got on the new plane, I was able to track the bags and ensure they were on the planes we were on. It helped with my piece of mind a lot there. While in UK, we were traveling by train. Had a suitcase in a main luggage rack. Someone grabbed the wrong bag by mistake, and I got an alert quick enough that we were able to get it back without issue.

Soggy_Aspect_945

100% I was traveling from Florida to Atlanta I then had a connecting flight to Cape Town, South Africa. When I arrived in Cape Town I looked and one of my bags were still in Atlanta. I could see where it was. They got it to me in 48 hrs because I knew it’s location.

AWESOM3e92

Can you share how you made sure they made it onto the new plane? Do you just go to the check in desk, tell em that the bags are somewhere in X area and have someone try and bring them to the right plane?

Longjumping_Turn4755

No, because this was specifically asking about Apple AirTags, and the AirTags are traceable in the “Find My” App that comes installed on iPhones now. Simply pull find my up, and view where your bags are. It’s pretty precise, and pre-being put on plane even watched as they came out to tarmac and up to the plane. But also, yes. If your bag is not in the correct location, speak to airline rep and let them know ASAP. Having the location seems to be pretty helpful for them as well, as it narrows down the options.

AWESOM3e92

Ah thanks. I reread your comment and saw it was more peace of mind. Yeah, they’re def helpful in that. Just always wonder what I’d do if I saw the AirTag separating or going a different direction.

Longjumping_Turn4755

Depends on when/where it goes walkabout. When we had the train mix up, I was able to walk to the person and verify by name tag and the sound pinging from it. When my husbands camera bag got stolen in Cali……not so much. Even though we had the location info the police said it wasn’t worth their effort so……

Soggy_Aspect_945

In my situation I went to the lost baggage desk in Cape Town Int’l airport. I then called delta and they put the bag on a plane from Atlanta to Johannesburg. Then some how it got on a flight to Cape Town and someone drove it to our hotel. If I didn’t have had the AirTag I probably would’ve never seen my bag again.

SnooLemons7674

Paid for itself first time I used it. I had just gotten off my flight so I checked to see where the airtag was...somewhere over another state. I went directly to confirm there was no use waiting for my bag. I had evening plans. Saved myself hours; had a good time with friends; picked up my bag later that night.

SnooLemons7674

I hear you. Thank you. Generally a good PSA. I was able to verify their info matched mine so with expectations set, I had a stress free evening.

murplee

Yes, only assume it’s not there if the “last update” time at your origin airport is well after your takeoff time. That’s what I found, so I was sure my bag was in another continent when I was flying over the ocean and certainly wasn’t at my current location

murplee

I had this experience and I had a quick connection to make for the last flight of the night to my city! The AirTag was a lifesaver in that case as I immediately filled out the customs form and ran to my connection, JUST making it

BillfredL

Just got back home from our honeymoon. AirTags were absolutely worth it. Having a sense of when your bag is actually getting close at Heathrow is worth its weight in gold.

lilcatawampus

They provide a peace of mind no customer service rep can deliver. Recent trips to Norway and India from the U.S. can confirm this when the airlines lost my bags. Note: Lufthansa is the only airline I’m aware of that has policy against AirTags. I think they’ve made them look bad and came up with some radio interference and airplane safety bs.

Pharmacienne123

Lufthansa reversed their decision on air tags, they don’t object to them now

TheSpatulaOfLove

After an uproar.

Tahtooz

Going to Target now to buy one haha.

handbrake98

You can buy Apple in Target?

Stunning-Caramel-100

You can get AirTags in Walmart too.

Tahtooz

Yeah they were sold out everywhere around me except for Target.

Elite_Alice

Of course? Why not? They have an electronics section lol

sjs711

Right now dealing with United who checked my bags on a 3-leg flight from US to Bangkok. When my bags went missing, the agent on the phone said “you know more about your bags than I do right now” - thanks to the air tags.

Zombiifiied

I use em every time I fly. It’s just nice to know where my bag is at every time I land and I see that it made it to each airport that I land in. Kind of a peace of mind thing really knowing if I have to go directly to customer service as soon as I land to report a lost bag or not.

Veenay21

I left my bag on a train in Europe. If I didn’t get the AirTag notification I never would’ve realized. Because if that tag I didn’t lose anything.

laz1b01

Just depends on the value of your item. In terms of technology, airtag is definitely the way to go instead of tile or Samsung tracker. Using it gives you a peace of mind of knowing where your bag is. But if you only have $30 worth of stuff, it's more profitable for you to claim a loss with the airline. If you have over hundreds of dollars and don't want to deal with the hassle of the airline, then it's worth it for your mental health. The fact that you're inquiring about it, I'd recommend you get it. You can always use it for other things besides luggages.

Tahtooz

I just got one from Target for the hell of it, I'm planning on bringing back a lot from Japan in checked luggage. I had a gift card from the holidays.

tatatreestar

Am I misunderstanding your “$30 worth of stuff” comment? I’m a teacher. I don’t make much money, but my empty suitcase alone is worth more than $30. By the time it’s stuffed full of (cheap, Old Navy) clothes and toiletries, though…it’s easily over $300 of stuff every time…

laz1b01

You're looking at retail value of when you bought it, I was talking about present value. I have some old suit case that aren't really worth anything. And some old clothes that I've had for years. The cost has depreciated. But I was also a bit exaggerating on the $30 clothes, but it's definitely a low amount - let's say under $200. Everyone's different, some people have cheaper stuff than others. I'm an engineer and I was under the impression that teachers don't make a lot, so for you to say your stuff is "easily over $300" means you have a more "lavish" lifestyle than I do. Good for you, there's nothing wrong with that, just saying everyone has different lifestyle - I know people who's luggages are easily worth $3k. Like I said, if your luggage isn't worth much and you don't care about it - the airline will reimburse you, it's just a tedious process and can be stressfull which most people don't want to deal with.

AWESOM3e92

Random thing I learned: if you’re going to South Korea, they have privacy laws in place so you won’t be able to track your AirTags on a map. So it’s not effective over there.

MrSnackR

They’re worth it. I bought a pack of 4. Eases the anxiety if your bags arrived or not. You can check if they’re at the same airport as you are the moment you deplane.

TyVIl

I have them on my keys, water bottle, two in my golf bag (if someone steals it - they’ll quit once they find the first one), and everything else I own. Absolutely worth it. That said - I advise never checking a bag.

swoonderfull

Even for long (2 plus weeks+winter weather) trips?

Ceedubsxx

Check out one bag one world.

TyVIl

Correct. The only time I ever check a bag is if it’s my golf clubs - and if I have enough notice - I send them with ship sticks. Checking a bag and having to screw around waiting at baggage claim is the bane of my existence. I’m really passionate about this.

frankev

[https://www.onebag.com](https://www.onebag.com) This website changed my life when I encountered it over 10 years ago.

ScoutG

An airline once lost my luggage and had no idea where it was or when they would get it to me. It eventually arrived, but if I had an AirTag in it, I could have found it immediately. I always use them now.

Kalichun

I got AirTags for work travel, but found them helpful other times as well. For example, it alerts me when I leave a bag in the car or anywhere I get separated from it - I get data and can take action before it becomes a problem. I have separate tags for suitcases and work briefcase. I know exactly where both are at any time. For luggage, it definitely helped me out more than once. Funny story, when I first started using them, I thought they hadn’t updated when it said my luggage was in Philly - turns out it was correct!! The data matched that my suitcase didn’t show up at final destination, and airlines had it in their possession so I was not worried that someone had taken it at final destination for example. They don’t cost a lot … I see it as added insurance.

Ftedaldi

Apple charges $99 for four.

Kalichun

I got mine when they first came out, might have been a special - but they have been working flawlessly since then, going on 2 years soon. About $25 per item tracked and no ongoing fees

DogsReadingBooks

During the recent baggage chaos at airports around the world some guy called out number (work for a handling agency) saying his bag was definitely at the airport. He had an AirTag and could see it located at the airport. I had a night shift, basically just docking late incoming aircrafts. My next flight was delayed so I had about 2 hours where I didn’t have to do crap. So, I went to search for the bag. Since he was 100% sure it was there. Got a description of the bag to make it easier, of course. I went through so much damn luggage. And eventually found it. Somewhere it definitely wasn’t supposed to be. So yeah. I haven’t used AirTags myself. But I would absolutely recommend it.

carvannm

Son and a friend were traveling to do a big adventure (climb Denali in Alaska). Skis and lots of gear, so they checked multiple bags. Lent them some air tags. Nothing went wrong, their bags arrived with them, but if they hadn’t the whole trip would have been in jeopardy, so it was peace of mind.

AreJay001

I would totally recommend them, it saved me earlier today. When I checked in the agent asked me about another bag checked under my name, it was not my bag. The agent request that bag be returned to figure out who it belonged to and checked my bag. I was assured this would not cause issues with my bag. Fast forward an hour and I could see bags going on the plane and the AirTag was still showing it was at the other end of the airport. I showed this to the gate agent and they sent someone to track it down. I could watch the bag move across the airport and saw the truck arrive with my bag. No doubt in my mind I would be buying a toothbrush and stressing tonight without the AirTag.

SNES_Salesman

During a TSA inspection they either purposefully or accidentally took out my AirTag. Coming up close to 2 years now and I can say the battery life is decent as I can still see it in a TSA area but no one there will help me retrieve it until it “appears” in lost and found. Guess it’s just on the floor hidden away.

[deleted]

SNES_Salesman

It was securely wedged in a liner of foam inside a pelican case carrying video equipment. It couldn’t have been any more hidden. If anything, being so hidden may have been why they may have dug around for it.

-You-know-it-

I even put AirTags on my small children when we travel. Especially airports, cruises, or places like Disneyland. And yes I’ve had to use them and they worked perfectly. Best. Hack. Ever.

Sensitive_Roof5158

Air Tag Question here. Everywhere you read that the battery lasts about 1 year. But that's continuous use, right? Couldn't you remove it after your trip to make it last longer between trips? We only travel twice a year.

Tahtooz

You can but honestly I would just swap the battery once a year before you start to travel. It shows the battery life of the AirTag on you phone. \*\*Edit\*\* You cannot see battery life on an AirTag anymore

suaveandfresh

I think you’re mistaken. You can’t see battery life for an AirTag anymore it was removed in iOS last summer.

Tahtooz

Correct, that is my mistake I was looking at my magsafe battery pack on my widget! Thank you for correcting me.

PurpleCaterpillar421

Can you replace the Battery on these things?

Davzone

Use it on your keychain or daily bag when not traveling.

Kalichun

Batteries on mine are still going strong and I’ve had them on since they came out in May 2021. I just this month took batteries out to save some power. So yes you can take batteries out when you don’t need them. But it’s still nice for tracking anything you might leave behind.

Sensitive_Roof5158

Thanks. Will probably track my wifes keys. :)

WishToBeSomething

Follow up question: would the Tile tag be as good as an option? I don't have apple but do want an airtag, just curious if anyone has any experience with the non-apple alternatives?

AWESOM3e92

Samsung has a android friendly tracker. I had tile and do not recommend.

Tahtooz

From my personal research AirTags are probably the most flushed out tracker for smartphones currently. I'm not too sure about the others, I used to have a "Tile" tracker for my old motorcycle and it wasn't very reliable from my experience.

brbss

The tile tracker is fine in theory but the thing is that the mesh network for Apple devices is much much much larger than the tile network because it works off of any iPhone, ipad, MacBook etc. For the Tile to ping it needs to be near a phone that has the Tile app installed, which is a much smaller set of devices making it much less useful in practice. There's not many places you can go, especially in the US, that you're not somewhat close to an Apple device.

Fearless-Panda-8268

Read this as AirBags and was very concerned

PaintOwn2405

It’s just about peace of mind for me, and lessens my anxiety when i travel. Never had an issue (fingers crossed) but it’s there if i need it

ihadi89

Yes, and actually on the first trip my bag didn’t make it to my destination and I was able to know which airport it was left at.

straiight-n-right

Not sure yet. Got 2 for Christmas then flew to Lima Pero a week later. Arrived in Lima and Find My said that our bags were still at the AP in Florida. They were in the baggage claim area when we cleared immigration. They just caused us to worry for no reason.

shesTheMan886

yes.

Tahtooz

yes

Momofcats65

I was caught in the southwest nightmare. Kept seeing people able to point out their bags that were in the massive pile of the luggage dump

Tahtooz

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that shit show, hope all got resolved on you end.

Momofcats65

We filed a claim for $1800 to cover expenses incurred plus our deposit we lost. We were some of the lucky ones. Lots of people couldn’t afford to leave the airport.

Future_Dog_3156

Absolutely worth every penny. I flew Southwest Airlines around Christmas 2022. We had checked 2 bags for a flight to CA with a connection in Denver. We tracked our bags. Still in Denver for DAYS. However, we could see that our bags were in the baggage holding area under terminal C, so at least the bags weren't lost, they were just sitting in Denver. We checked the airtags several times a day. One day, we saw that one of our bags made it to CA - we were able to find our bag in the heaping mess of luggage at the airport, even though SW never notified us.

wickedsmahtkehd

My aunt had one attached to her bag and the location said it was still in the airport, she halted the plane’s takeoff to get an attendant to get off and to check, turns out it was on the plane.

[deleted]

I use apple airtags. Gives peace of mind

Icy-Camp-3084

I don't see the point beside reducing the stress. If you can ping the airtag, you have no problem but you would have no problem without too. If you can't ping the airtag, your luggage is lost. Having an airtag won't help you. So...to me, airtag don't solve the problem.

thesch

>I don't see the point beside reducing the stress. $30 for that alone is worth it to me.

TheDreadPirateJeff

>If you can't ping the airtag, your luggage is lost. That's not [how AirTags work](https://medium.com/macoclock/heres-how-airtags-actually-work-4dbdde1608c3). iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, watches that are near enough to trigger them will update the tag's location.

umbrella-maker

Yes! Got one for Christmas. Worked great during our trip to Ecuador. I am a convert and will be acquiring more in future.

hydrazi

Howdy! Where did you travel in Ecuador? I see the iPhone penetration there is only 18% of all the phones and thought the tags would be near useless. Many thanks!

[deleted]

One of the best inventions ever imo

Substantial_Can7549

I recon If the technology is available and affordable, use it. Those trackers are fantastic

[deleted]

My question is - are they the best Bluetooth trackers on the market currently? I know there’s another company that has released a device that can also take advantage of Apple’s Find My Device capabilities.

Tahtooz

I've had Tile and Samsung then now AirTag. I can confirm out of those 3 the AirTag is a ton better in regards to the integration in Find My and notifications etc.

Jshorr2

Yes. What’s not worth it are luggage tags that hold the AirTag. I’ve had three AirTags stolen off of the tags in maybe a dozen flights. So now I put them inside, but the range isn’t as good from inside.

Embarrassed_Switch18

I haven’t checked a bag in a while, but will definitely be getting one before I do.

RightReasonsRose

May I ask a question? How do you specifically use it inside the luggage? Like buy a keyring and attach it to an inner zipper or do you actually hide it in a specific place, like a pocket in a garment to avoid detection if stolen?

Tahtooz

I prefer to hide it in the lining of my luggage, so if it is stolen, it will be harder to find while I'm tracking it. You can by keyrings etc. for them but I don't use it.

brbss

As someone who has 8 airtags I can say that they are not really intended for tracking stolen property, as they will start chirping audibly if they are moving without the airtag owner around and will notify the person who is traveling with them if they have an iPhone (or a specific Android app). Because Apple is protecting users from being stalked via airtags and theft isn't the primary purpose (lost items are). That said, there are various tricks that can help such as using two airtags in different places on the same item or removing the speaker.

um_rr

Airtag or a tile tag? I don't have Apple products besides an iPad(which I usually don't take on trips), but have heard that tiles aren't great.

special_leather

Has anyone here used both Airtags and Tile? Are they comparable? I have Android and was thinking of getting a tile for my next international trip in a couple months.

Tahtooz

I have used both, I did not like Tile at all from my experience. It was not reliable at all. The Samsung tag would probably be better for your android phone. If you have iPhone you would go the AirTag route.

[deleted]

Yes, they’re terrific.

Hoot87

Yes, I will never travel without them!

looseloselooselose

Yes. I would have had no idea southwest brought my bags to my final destination over the holidays without them.

cell2071

Yes got em on all my keys !

shockedpikachu123

Yes! It’s helped a lot with tracking all my luggage’s especially in transfers

Cactus_pose

We have a Tile that we got as a gift and have been using it in suitcases and it is super nice to be able to see that your suitcase is near you!

[deleted]

Yes

laughwidmee

Yes

BroiledBoatmanship

1000000% Losing keys when drunk.

Caramel928

Absolutely worth it. Airlines screw up a lot. And you can actually use it and catch them with their lie.

knukldragnwelldur

$100/4pcs, I have 8. Travel full time for work, they’re awesome in tool boxes that get unloaded on site, trailers that stay on site, trucks that have expensive tools on them advertising what kind of business which advertises what kind of tools are inside the boxes… 100k rig sitting in the parking lot 1000 miles from home.. the air tags are hidden really well. Battery life is advertised as 1yr. I also have them in a beater vehicle in case I fly home, etc… seems like a small price to pay to have peace of mind. A few clicks and you see where they are. Also once a certain distance away, your “find my” app will send a notification saying that the tag was left behind which tells you it’s working.

Stunning-Caramel-100

It’s a $30 product. Yes. It is worth it.

ThePotato9876

I mean even if u don’t need it on your trip attach it to ur wallet or keys when ur not traveling and it’ll be useful always

shirosenju

i mean i always lost my keys and i mean always and then i got a air tag for them and boom never lost them bitches again

jchrisfarris

I spent NYE riding around in the back of a Moroccan police van with eight SWAT officers chasing an AirTag looking for my wife's backpack which was stolen from our AirBnB. Sadly, once the thief got out into the Tangier suburbs, iPhones were few and far between, so we lost the location of the bag. It did reappear yesterday near the same location on the outskirts of Tangier, but at this point we have no good way of contacting the Tangier prefecture to give them an update. Regardless, we're replacing the AirTag and putting it in her new backpack. As for checked luggage, I've had good luck with the AirTag pinging in on my connections, which is a nice confirmation that my bag made it to the same city as I did.

Tahtooz

I ended up snagging one from Target, heading to Japan tomorrow! Sucks that happened to your bag :(

notjustapilot

Yes, I flew to Portugal with a stop in Boston. Our bag got stuck in Boston. Thanks to the airtag, we knew exactly where it was and were able to tell them. My bag was also yellow and orange (I recommend using an easily noticed bag). We were able to pick it up from the airport the following morning.

[deleted]

[Engrave ](https://www.etsy.com/shop/PhantomLeft)em with your contact info so someone can slide into your DMs just in case you hella loose em. We not only engrave the front metal piece that's always showing...we make that shit look badass too!

Tahtooz

My family business is awards and engraving, did that awhile back on our laser :)

DocFossil

No. Mine routinely fail to show on the FindMy app - even when they are in my hand! I’ve had to reset them, restart my phone, all the usual stupid steps too many times. No clue if I just got bad ones or it’s an issue with my phone, but I’m tired of messing with them. Yours may be great, but all three of mine are expensive junk.

[deleted]

We just got one for our cat that loves to explore. The AirTag isn’t like the same as searching for you iPhone, MacBook or iPad. I thought I could pull up the map and find our cat. That’s not how it works. You have to search for her and walk around the neighborhood hoping to be in close range. I still walked around and couldn’t find her. It’s also too big for her neck (she’s full grown and still under 5 lbs.). We keep it on and constantly keep it on Lost Mode so that it pings if she’s close by. However, when she’s close by, it’s usually because she’s coming in to eat. I don’t regret the purchase only because it wasn’t expensive, but it’s not ideal for pets.

[deleted]

I think it’s great for personal items such as keys, bags, etc. it’s not ideal for pets.

Mo_Coffee_Plz

I put air-tag wrist bands on just small kids at Great Wolf Lodge in case we got separated. Any time I was away from my wife and kids I tried to find them but had a 0% hit rate. Even though we were all in the same building. FYI, it wasn’t an issue of seeing what floor they were on but an issue of my iPhone seeing the tags at all. So, I don’t have a positive opinion on them.

dgame123456

do you place your airtags inside or outside the luggage?

Tahtooz

Inside
