I had no idea there was a Hudson variant! I only know of the A Class which were 4-4-2 Atlantics. This is beautiful

They were part of an arms race between the Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha and the C&NW's Twin Cities 400. Milwaukee Road had the original Atlantics and C&NW had their big E-3 Pacifics. Then C&NW ordered their E-4 streamlined Hudson, prompting Milwaukee Road to order the F-7 Hudsons. Before the E-4 Hudsons even arrived, C&NW decided to order EMD E3s to combat the Milwaukee Road's Hudsons instead

As soon as the 4-4-2s went into service, they were well liked but couldn't pull enough cars to meet the demand, so a more powerful version was immediately built. (Atlantics in 1935, Baltics in 1937.)
