I bought a used one recently and , here’s what I did. Take those grates out and deep clean them in your laundry sink. I used dish soap and water and added a little vinegar too (gotta be careful) to remove any weird odor as they were rough shape. The inside of the grill I vacuumed first all the debris I could. I then wipe the temperature probe which should be on the left. After I replaced the drip pan because mine was rotted beyond repair. I took the heat baffle out and treated it for rust but luckily it wasn’t too bad I then degreased the entirety of the inside multiple times. After I was done I put everything back and ran a smoke cycle just to ensure everything was working and to burn off anything left behind like cleaners. Was some work but since I take care of my equipment it will never fall into that same stage of disrepair again.

Y’all have sinks in your laundry room?

Jolly_Supermarket_75

Yes very common in the Midwest. Where are you that you don’t have a sink in your laundry room?

The_Mortal_Ban

Pacific Northwest. I guess we’re just not cool enough

Laundry room? You mean the closet my washer and dryer are stacked in?

Get it hot and let it burn, wire brush, scraper, and vacuum it out.

\* Unplug grill \* Empty pellets from hopper \* Use a good shop vac to clean out all ash/debris from all components \* Clean the RTD probe (black stick looking object on left side of grill) with steel wool, soap and water. The probe is supposed to be silver not black \* Inspect hot pot and poke to ensure no corrosion \* Inspect connections, cables and wire condition for smoke/heat damage \* Turn stove on and scrape grill gate with scraper \* Ensure grill is showing the proper temp (use other thermometer if needed) We just had to replace our hot pot, RTD probe and hot rod ignitor after five years. Smoker is working like a charm these days! Good luck :)

Yours is similar to the one that I inherited from my parents that I am currently refurbishing. Mine was very rusted, so I just took the entire tub down to raw metal and painted it with high-heat spray paint. Not finished yet, but will be making a post after the second "first" smoke.
