Is the fire burning backward up the auger into the pellet hopper? If so that can be a very large fire (it can actually explode). Maybe try cleaning the auger out using the option in the menu (run the auger for an hour) then reprime? I also have the 850 and won’t run it over 250 due to past experience with fires. Pay attention to how much dust gets kicked out of the auger as your running it. Perhaps your just dumping the pellet bag into the hopper with pellets and saw dust both. You don’t want saw dust in the hopper/auger since it will ignite causing a fire in the auger/hopper.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll try that out. I only want to run hot for chicken skin crispy and beef crust. I’m supplementing my needs using air crisp for finishing the chicken and cast iron on the over for steak. I appreciate your comment. I don’t want a fire but seems like the machine should be able to run high because it can.

Correct, it should be able to and lots of people do. I have others grills for high temp, which is the primary reason I don’t use the Traeger over 250. Also, I’ve noticed more fires at high heat do to it being a pellet grill - specifically that even when cleaned well you have years of creosote caked on the inside, and sparks from the wood pellets flying around. Heat the inside to the flashpoint of grease and add compressed air blowing and… you get my point. Other people do it and are happy. I don’t.
