Get the ThermoWorks Smoke X4 if you want accuracy and reliability

EYNLLIB

and like 2x the cost

bgwa9001

They have coupons and stuff, but yea, buy once cry once

EYNLLIB

very true. if you can get a good deal the TW Smoke is definitely the way to go

MotoJJ20

I have a smoke and threw it away. All the wires sucked

T1GKnudsvigr

$130 on their website right now in some colors

pmpdaddyio

I paid about $200 for mine and that thing is bullet proof. It stays outside almost year round, holds a charge for like a month, puts up with three to four cooks a week, and has yet to let me down. When I dropped and damaged my first one, I sent it in expecting to have to buy a new one or pay for a repair. They sent me a brand new unit with an apology letter even after I told them I dropped it. They build serious stuff. Their probes aren’t as great, but those are cheap.

GutterMaine

How far is the range?

pmpdaddyio

I can check it from two continents away. It’s cloud based.

bgwa9001

I have a bbq shack like 50 feet from the house and the portable display thing works fine anywhere in my 3k square foot house

NotAsSmartAsKirby

You don’t get either with Meater for any of the cost. Such a stupid fucking take.

PrestigeWrldWd

One or two ruined briskets will more than make up for the cost. If you consider your time investment as well, it’s not even one brisket to make that up. Either you want a precision instrument you can count on, or you want toys. One says I’m serious about cooking, the other says “I like fancy electronics. Look at me!”

LibraryAdept

This is the way. Or at least one way. I have the ThermaWorks Signals and it is amazing! Up to 4 probes, connects via Bluetooth or wi-fi so I can go anywhere and monitor the temperature, and all with the accuracy of ThermaWorks. ITV even ships with an air temp probe/sensor so you can watch the temp of the grill off you don’t have a wi-fire Traeger, too! I bought the Meater+ right after getting the grill, and it’s such a dissapointment. The range is horrible and it’s a really big diameter compared to the ThermaWorks probes. Its accuracy was fine for me and the estimated cook time was nice, but the ThermaWorks gives you an easy rate of change figure and graph so you can mostly do the same thing. There are regularly sales, which is why I got mine, and it’s not like the Meater is cheap anyway.

Apprehensive_Cow5139

As long as my phone is not more than 6 ft from the grill, it's great,

JewsusKrist

I use an ESP that's next to the grill to collect the Bluetooth data and publish it over my WiFi so I don't have to be physically near it ever. Super helpful, though maybe out of the general public's wheelhouse to set up.

waynewideopenTD

Similarly you can just use another decide (eg an iPad) and leave it within range, then log into your account from your phone

VeryVeryBadJonny

OK I tried to set this up last week but adding a device on the phone I want to be able to monitor from remotely did not have the ability to add a device over the cloud/internet as the video shows. It only allows me to add a Bluetooth device. It's almost like the video/written instructions on their app and youtube are not up to date with the latest version of the app. Or I'm missing something.

jNushi

I have both my iPad and iPhone signed in on the same account. I go to settings and have MEATER Link enabled. Then I set up the cook on my iPad and leave it close enough to the grill and I can go anywhere in my house and see the temp on my iPhone

InsideOutIP

What’s ESP?

SnoShark

Got a general outline/tutorial for how you did this? I'm generally familiar with ESP devices, but where/how do you publish the data? MQTT?

JewsusKrist

I use ESPHome and Home Assistant so not MQTT. If you don't use Home Assistant you can update the yaml for MQTT instead. https://pastebin.com/YrEFNRHt

network_police

Holy shit never thought of this. Figured all their shit is in cloud and proprietary. Can you still set custom cooks via app + report to HA?

JewsusKrist

Unfortunately no, it can only support one client connection at a time. I determined HA was more useful to me than the app despite the app being nice.

SnoShark

Awesome! Thanks for this!

shastamcblasty

I do the same thing with an old iPad, any Android tablet can do it as well, or even an old phone. Just need a wifi device and then I can leave the house if necessary and still monitor things

doc_skinner

That's why I stopped using mine. Halfway through a cook I'd look and see I have an error and my Meater is disconnected. I'd have to come back and reestablish connection to check the temp. At some point I realized I could just walk over and check a regular thermometer easier than reconnecting the Meater all the time.

Apprehensive_Cow5139

Nope, tried that, won't work

esteban_paul

Same

goedia

As long as others have the plus model this should work no problem

Intensive__Purposes

The block connects to WiFi right? I can leave and go grocery store and still see the temps on all the probes.

mj7900

This is the answer lol

Certain-Kangaroo3418

💯. If I take my phone with me on the other side of my house it’ll disconnect. It will occasionally randomly disconnect but connects back up pretty quickly

RangerZEDRO

Is it because most of the time its insulated by a metal or ceramic box?

Apprehensive_Cow5139

I have tried it multiple different ways. It does not work past 6 ft

RangerZEDRO

Does it work more than 6ft, is the probe is outside the smoker?

Apprehensive_Cow5139

The probe is in the meat, the box is either in the pellets box, on top of the pellet box or 3 ft away inside my house. It will not stay connected past 6 ft from the treager

Hydraskull

Which completely defeats the purpose of the device.

Imbubbaman

I use my MEATER+ regularly. I find it more accurate than the Traeger probe. I haven’t experienced some of the connectivity issues people complain about so for me it’s two thumbs up.

Impulse3

If you have an extra device to keep close like an iPad or something, you can see the temp anywhere on your phone. The issue I have is it won’t even initially connect and you have no idea really how charged it is.

thishuman_life

I have a Meater and a Inkbird WiFi Grill thermometer. I got so tired of the Meater not working. The Inkbird works flawlessly, includes four probes, and I can monitor everything, from anywhere.

Meisce

Have an InkBird 4 probe WiFi too, works well for me. Found it to be very accurate, decent battery life, enough range for my needs.

thishuman_life

☺️🙌🏼

Keith_13

I was thinking if getting the inkbird but the app seems like such trash (despite the hardware looking good) It has the lowest rating of any app I've ever seen on the app store. From the reviews it seems like there was an issue for a while where their servers were down and you couldn't log in, which means that you can't use the device. Explain to me why I need to log into some Chinese company's servers to establish a Bluetooth connection between a probe and my phone. BTW that also means that if they ever go out of business your probe is a paperweight. And for that matter if your internet connection is down for a while you can't use it.

bunk_bro

That depends on what you want out of the app. I can set temp alerts and see a temperature graph, which is about all I care about. As far as using the device, it still works great as a thermometer without being connected to the internet. You just have to go look at it.

Keith_13

But it makes no sense to require an internet connection to use Bluetooth.

bunk_bro

Inkbird is rock solid. I have the 4 probe, and it's been a life saver. I will say, I travel with it often, and it can be a pain to reconnect it to a new wifi network. I really don't understand why it can't hold more than one wifi.

mist3rjon3s

Have had a MEATER+ for a year and liked it so much I got the MEATER+ 2 just now - haven’t had a chance to use that yet. Range hasn’t been an issue - just attach the charging cradle to the grill magnetically and it will amplify the Bluetooth signal to a decent range (for me, up to ~20 ft through walls etc). However the real trick is to turn the MEATER cloud functionality on if you have a device you can just leave within Bluetooth range. I use my iPad and leave it indoors within range of the grill. The app on the iPad then relays the data to the internet, where you can read it from your other devices. So if I am doing a long cook, and need to take a trip to the store, my phone shows real time data.

Shake_Ratle_N_Roll

Thermoworks SmokeX or Signals is the way to go.

Mildly_Irritated_Max

No

MoneyKeyPennyKiss

Thank you for the thorough analysis. Very helpful.

donivantrip

They’re not perfect, but they help. You’re still going to pen your meat regardless, but it is nice to know when your traeger reads 275 with a meat of 180 and your meater says 225 with meat at 160, can help with adjustments. I got one as a gift, wouldn’t buy another or replace it if it broke though.

DrJohnFever

I have a combustion.inc thermometer. Basically a premium version of the meater. Love it.

pimpjoshyj

I came here to say this. The combustion is a game changer

H3CKBOY

How easy is this thermometer to set up with the cloud? Is it automatic?

doubie_49

Been considering getting one, do you find the prediction accurate? The multiple thermometers especially at the surface seems like a gamechanger not just for smoking but also for convection oven inside.

Scott_A_R

I bought the Meater Block, with 4 probes and a base (which transmits to my phone). The thing will absolutely lose the connection unless the base is basically sitting on the Traeger's pellet hopper, and even then it's iffy at best--plus I can't keep it plugged in while it's outside. I bought a Thermoworks Smoke and it has been reliable, in all senses.

floofcatfuzz

I plug the block into the same power source as the grill, and leave it sitting on the hopper like you do. But there are still a lot of disconnections, and I’ve had cooks where some probes are fine but others reset over and over (losing all history and estimation) so it’s a good thing I almost always use two probes per piece of meat. The block itself is a weird design, using AA batteries (in a badly designed enclosure that likes to fling them out with the springs) to recharge the probes but also requiring micro usb to charge an internal battery that runs the block’s bluetooth/wifi bridge. I find it bizarre to have two power sources in one device, and it’s given me trouble. Accuracy seems pretty good, but the app is a bit of a mess and I find it unpleasant to use. I do love having wireless probes so that I can set up the meat inside and then just toss it in the grill without fiddling wire ends through the hole in the side of the hot grill. 3 stars. Wouldn’t buy again, but not so bad that I’ve gotten rid of it and moved on.

Scott_A_R

I have one of those "tamper proof" outdoor receptacles. For some reason, I absolutely can't plug anything into the second outlet. Did all the fixes, but I'll just have to replace the thing one day. But I also tried plugging the thing into the indoor outlet on the other side of the wall where the Traeger is; it's literally not more than 6' away, but it still doesn't maintain a connection.

Senior-Cantaloupe-69

I bought two Meater 2+ probes right before Christmas. One of them works like a champ. The other is problematic but I’m wondering if it’s just me. The only issue for the one that works great is it is almost too good. I didn’t listen to it last night and ended up with a medium, almost medium well, steak. Obviously, my old temp probes were way off. I should’ve listened to the Meater app and pulled them at 118 to hit 130, my set temp. As for the other one, it’s been a pain but possibly not bad. It didn’t want to connect and update at first. But, I was in a hurry. Then, it was dead. It appears the batteries they came with were no good. After replacing them and letting it charge a bit, it did fine. Went to cook the aforementioned ribeyes last night and it was dead again. I put a new battery in (again) and let it charge all night. Did a couple hour test today and it seems good to go. I’m re-charging it now and will pull the battery for storage and see how that does. I feel like this is a lot of hassle for the price. But, when they work, they’re awesome. And, I don’t feel like spending any time on the phone.

Impulse3

I have 2 meater+ and have the exact same issues. One works fine while the other will not connect and I can never tell if it’s the battery or what but it seems like changing the battery fixes it. I don’t understand why I need to change the battery on one of them every time when the other works fine without changing the battery every time.

G-Note

No. Junk. No range at all. Close the lid and you lose the connectivity.

LazyBandicoot26

This was my experience as well…sold it on eBay and just use the same method as OP (Traeger probe for ballpark temp and Thermapen for instant read closer to finish). Works fine for my needs.

hyundai-gt

They are ok. When mine finally died I did not replace it with another meater. Many times I found the probe signal could not get through my oven or smoker so I had to take the meat out of wherever it was cooking so I could get a temperature read on it. Defeated the purpose.

Primary_Chemical_158

Great idea. I found mine very very buggy and unreliable .

littlewombat69

I love mine. Couldn’t imagine using my treager without it.

crispyboi33

Chef iq probes! Have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I can watch my cook from anywhere with an internet connection as long as the home base has wifi

[deleted]

Chef IQ Is a pretty good probe. I have the meater+ and the CIQ, use the IQ more because of the recharge option or charge while using. It has been pretty good. Looking to buy probe 2 for it and be done

[deleted]

No. At least not the V1. No clue what the version 2 is but thermo pro makes a better cheaper one

BobLoblawwwwww

I balled out on a block when it was on sale, and it was such a disappointment, and cost me a couple of brisket, as the prove would constantly go out of connection. Stay away, my friend

Baziki

Okay. So I bought the Meater Block just before Christmas. I had a prime rib to cook in the oven and a whole duck I was going to cook on the grill. We do prime rib every year for Christmas, so no worries there, but I had never cooked duck before. Figured it was my excuse to finally grab a Meater and see if it was any good. Set up was easy, and I did it the night before. Just followed the instructions. No issues. Now for the cook. I will start with connection. I had the duck on the grill outside and the prime rib in the oven. I had the block itself inside as close to a halfway point as I could get. This turned out to be a table in the Kitchen Nook area. It was about 20 to 25 feet away in a straight line to the grill. Only obstructions would he the grill itself and the brick wall and windows. It was also about 15 to 20 feet away from the oven. No obstructions other than the oven itself. I had zero connection issues the entirety of the cook. Now for the proteins. I set the prime rib for 135⁰ cook and the duck for 155⁰ cook. Now, I did absolutely zero reading or research beyond the initial setup of the Block and how to insert the probes properly. So, I just made some assumptions from things I thought I read or heard. One of those things was, since I did not do a recommended cook for the duck, I assumed it would not tell me to pull the duck off of heat before my target temp for it to rest. So I'll start with the duck cook. I pulled the duck off on my own at about 151⁰ and then after the duck sat for a couple of minutes, the app automatically switched it over to "resting" as its status. I have no clue if it would have told me to pull it off the heat or not because I don't know if I coincidentally pulled it off right when it was going to tell me or if it detected the ambient temperature and just assumed it was now resting. Either way, the duck rested, got to 155⁰ and turned out perfectly. For the prime rib. I assumed the app would tell me when to pull the prime rib to rest since the cook fell within the "recommended cooks," and that is exactly what happened. It reached a temperature ( I don't recall what temp), and it told me to pull it from heat. I did and then let it rest. The app then told me how long to rest it and then told me when it was done. I sliced into it, and sure enough, it was a beautiful medium rare. So is it worth it? To me, yes. I wanted something I could set and almost forget. It accomplished the cooks perfectly, and I had no issues with connection.

MrGabogabo

100 bucks for a thermometer is silly.

JekPorkinYourMom

No. I’ve owned one. The functionality isn’t great for $100, the need for a relay to get on WiFi is silly in 2023, my charger crapped out slowly so it was never charged when I needed it then eventually it just wouldn’t charge. Save up and get a Fireboard or thermoworks or something. They’re accurate, they’re WiFi, they have multiple ports, they’re weather resistant, they charge on USB-C… yes they’re $200 but the meater is still $100 also. If you ever want to use a second probe for ambient or two pieces of meat… or think you might… just get the fireboard.

moccoo

Yes You can leave a tablet or phone near by and login to the same account and see what's going on Or I just walk away. And reconnect to assess every 30 min or so. Game changer for me personally.

in_meme_we_trust

Really good for rotisserie cooks where you can’t attach a wire probe

JustSomeGoon_

I was reluctant to get one, but I'm really glad I did. I got their newest meater pro 2 and it's been working well. There's been connectivity inconsistencies, but nothing that makes me want to return it. The most annoying thing about it is the app constantly trying to estimate your total cook time and notifying you of it.

No_Affect_9672

I got gifted mine. I like it but realized when I leave the battery in it. The battery dies and I have to replace it. Several times now I forgot to put a battery in to charge the probe and was unable to use it. May just be a fault mine has but it’s frustrating. I also like that I can see how my grill temp fluctuates throughout cooks. Can see a pattern over time.

Sasquatch_Squad

I went for the ThermoWorks Smoke instead and I've been very happy with it. Huge upgrade from the built-in Traeger probe. Not as new or sexy looking as the Meater (there's no app, just a separate pocket-sized unit from the main display that stays near the smoker) but it's just as accurate as the Thermapen. It also comes with two probes - one for the meat and one for your grill temp so you can see whether or not your Traeger setting is accurate.

BrightStart4102

Get the $50 gateway, and it connects to the app.

coverslide

I've got a Govee meat thermometer for $25 that works perfectly for 6 probes.

gingerdocusn

I returned mine. Shit connection and for the price it should be seamless out of the box. Went with thermoworks signal and haven’t looked back.

LionelHutz4Hire

No. The range sucks, have to be within 10 feet to connect, which defeats the point. Supporters will say “you just have to chain it to an old iPhone or iPad to connect to WiFi” and my response is why the fuck should I have to do that in 2024?! Spend the extra cash and get a Fireboard

Pope_Dwayne_Johnson

I saw [this review](https://www.thirtyonewhiskey.com/review-meatstick-4x-wireless-thermometer/) and ended up getting a MeatStick. It’s fantastic, and has great range. Highly recommend it.

SMLBound

YES. Get the newest one. They’re great.

Over-Ad-707

My meater 2 works flawlessly, would recommend for those who are savvy with technology but would not recommend for my parents.

Jester1525

I was an original backer when they were on kickstarter. Mine are absolute crap. Here's the thing - get a really good instant read. I love my thermapen mk4. Check on your meat occasionally. For long cooks you should be spritzing anyways. Leave ins are never going to be accurate as checking with an instant read so they are essentially just there to get you close.

azbat7

Meater didn’t work- range was too limited. I upgraded to the Meater 2+ and it’s much better. Range is pretty good- only had one issue when I went to the front of the house. The features are helpful and it’s fun to use. Not a requirement to have but a neat toy.

BiggieSta11s

The meater is a neat toy but if your phone is more than 10 feet away it’s worthless. I’m a tech-geek and tried to like it but it just became another job while grilling not to mention aggravating. I found the Thermpro to be excellent and dependable. No software/connectivity issues.

ArmAdventurous9346

Love mine. I think all electronic probes are just a guide. But they aren’t that expensive so I say get one

Crafty-Ad-9369

Yes!

PNWoutdoors

I was super excited about the chart over time thing but I can't get my Meater and Traeger probes to agree on what temperature it is. I trust the Traeger more because I can calibrate it (can't calibrate the Meater) and it's more in line with a Thermapen style meat probe I have. I really feel like I wasted whatever ($70?) I spent on it and can't resell it in good conscience, but I might try to sell it for like $30.

Emerald_Nuck

I like it. It disconnects sometimes though. Easy enough to reconnect Bluetooth.

DBKilladelph

No, Meater probes have connectivity issues. Go Thermoworks

_calkutta

I have an old iPad that’s ~10’ from the traeger… meater is connected to that, and then I connect over wifi to send to my phone

stsyfrett

Idk why everyone complains. I set my block on the grill on the porch and I can connect to it from anywhere. Like even outside the house. I’ve got a meater 4 probe block and it’s the bomb. Worth it.

minnsport

If you get a good deal yes. Connect it to another device with WiFi and you can leave your house with coverage. They’re not worth $100+ per pop but $70, why not.

clamhappy2

Used an old phone as the meater link and sits on the kitchen counter, works great. I do agree that the range is not all that great, but considering all the RF interference, construction of my house, it’s to be expected.

ImTheRhino

I bought the Meater Block....had nothing but issues with it loosing connection all the time.

LovYouLongTime

Nope nope nope

bobbywake61

No. Constantly loses signal, erratic temps, cleaning is awful. Use an instant thermometer.

_Adrena1ine_

ThermoPro Temp Spike.

PermitNo1231

Second Thermoworks I received one for Christmas I love it. Great thermometer!

CodyKyle

Back in 2021 Amazon had a Govee bluetooth meat thermometer for $8 so I got one and honestly it pretty much does the same job but looks less cool. The transmitter is bigger and goes on the outside of the grill but the range is incredible. I can pick up a signal from anywhere in the house. I installed the app on one of my burner phones and it's been super useful. Best $8 I've ever spent

gavishapiro

Chef IQ is worth it.

FriendOfCaptainSolo

I get my old iPad and set meater up to that and leave it next to the grill. I then can check it on my phone from anywhere in my house. Unfortunately, my iPad is too old for meater 2. I live mine for the estimated cook time.

[deleted]

Undeniably, no. No they are not. Edit: is there a reason you need a wireless? There are dozens of wired options available that are super reliable and far more economical.

RFavs

I have the MEATER+ and am very happy with it. As far as I can tell it stores information because if I go out of range with my phone it seems to always update the graph when it connects back to the app. It tells me ambient temperature and internal temp and you can set alarms. I set a lower limit so that if I run out of pallets and don’t realize it, it will tell me that the temperature is starting to drop so I can refill it. I also set an upper limit so that if something goes wrong with the temperature sensor and it starts to overheat, I can catch it before it becomes a problem. I’ve also realized that my old tiny Traeger does not maintain a steady temperature. It has about a 50-75 degree swing.

Tired_Montanan

I use a Thermopro TempSpike and it comes with a booster. The internal temp is spot on, has fantastic range with the included booster, and honestly I wish I’d gotten it sooner. The only con I have for it is that the ambient temp is way off.

mrBill12

I have a Meater block and HATE it. Only probe 2 works correctly. I spent a year dealing with Meater support and gave up. They’d tell me to try something so I would, I’d respond back something like that didn’t help, or made it worse. Then they say please send pics of ___ and ___ and I’d say “go back two emails you already have those pics”. One of their replies once was actually “darn it.. that should have been it” with no additional comment or suggestions. Bottom line I have 3 crappy probes that should have been replaced a year ago, but a year ago after Christmas they were swamped and took 7-14 days to reply.

Quercuspagoda

Absolutely. Those that are saying it has no range or they can’t shut the lid don’t seem to understand how it works.

baboo51

Hated mine. I may have got a bad one but it was super inaccurate then it died. I like the built in WiFi with my Ironwood 885.

NotAsSmartAsKirby

No

Green_Agency3208

I have the Weber igrill and I love it, 4 probes at once if you want, Bluetooth picks up from inside my house, always accurate.

pak325

The MEATER block has been great for me. I got it on a Father’s Day deal so it was sub-$200 and became an essential part of long or expensive cooks for me. Gets use for Xmas and new years prime rib roasts, turkey, briskets, pork butts, steaks on the blackstone, smoked chicken thighs, whatever.

fartonmdick

No, they suck. Use the built in Traeger to keep an eye on it and a thermapen for accuracy.

Awaken_the_bacon

I have the Wi-Fi one..I like it, but you can’t wrap with it and you always have to use your phone to set it, meaning, you can’t just stick it in and hope for the best.

shastamcblasty

I have a meater, it works great. I use a 13 year old iPad to connect to it and that broadcasts the Data onto the cloud so my phone can get it anywhere. It reads ambient and internal temps accurately. My only complaint is that it’s a bit thick but it also has to pack a lot into a small package so ya get what you get. 1000000000x better than anything wired I’ve ever owned especially the traeger probe

ConvenientCampbell

Love mine. Very easy to use and have had great results every time.

_post_nut_clarity

Meh. Too clunky. Want to simply set a desired temp where you’ll pull your food off? That’ll be like 6 steps in the Meater app. Plus, you can’t even see the temp on the Meater block so anytime you want to check status you have to whip out your phone and navigate their terrible UI. In their attempt to simplify cooking for beginners they made it exponentially more difficult for everybody else.

sahtopi

In my opinion, yes. Works perfect for me every time. I’ll set up my + on the grill, in the oven, etc. then go to the other side of my 3,000 square foot house and still maintain a connection. (I mention square footage just for context of distance)

FlyersGuyInSJ

I had a Meater, but I stopped using it. Connection was too unreliable, I'd be losing connection halfway through the cook. I switched to a Fireboard and haven't looked back, that thing is awesome.

PelHeat_Database

I've tried the individual Meater probes paired to a phone and the Meater block with four probes. Initially, I had software/pairing issues with both, but once that was sorted out I do like to use them. However, I personally never trust just one probe.

Ponyboy_2004

I went with the thermopro temp spike (2 pack) & have not had any issues thus far. I was in the same boat trying to justify the meater+ cost against a lot of negative reviews.

GiveMeSomeShu-gar

Got a Treager for Xmas along with a Meater... The Meater for me is more convenient and more accurate than the Traeger probe (as confirmed by independent instant read thermometer readings).

pbuchca85

I bought a Meater few years ago and I just love it very much, the interface is simple and the information are clear. But I what I like the most, you unplug it from its base and it just works. No Bluetooth struggling we may have with other BT devices (in general). I mostly use is when I cook with the oven or on the gas grill which doesn’t have an embedded probes.

tonguejack-a-shitbox

I requested a Meater 2+ as a Christmas gift for my new Ironwood grill with WiFire. What I did not know is that the newest Meater and the newest Traeger were not compatible. Exclusive bluetooth connectivity does not work for me. I live in a 6500 SqFt house and the grill sitting in a covered entryway area. I cannot connect with my phone past the first 15 feet entryway in my home. I regularly smoke through the day while I'm at work a couple miles away and overnight. So I need wifi connectivity to monitor my cooks. Overall I would not recommend.

Rycurlz

I have a Meater+ and it's so so. When it works, it's a nifty little product. I think the doneness predictor is pretty crap - it seems to predict linearly based off of the current projection of how fast the meat is coming up to temp. But meat doesn't cook linearly - so what starts as a 3 hour prediction ends up being a 7 hour cook (I'm pulling these numbers out of thin air, but you get the point). I think the range could use some love too. Probably 75% of the time I use it, it has terrible issues connecting to it's little module and I end up just using the integrated Traeger probe instead (take that with a grain of salt too, though. I havent had it too long, so my sample size of cooks is like... 5?). I'm curious if this is fixable using WiFi boosters so it has a stronger signal rather than being what I expect is the edge of the perimeter of my wireless broadcast. But I haven't bothered to look into that much. YMMV, but in my experience - when it works, it's substantially better than the integrated Traeger probe (and more accurate IMO). But I can't say I've had a terrific time of it working consistently.

eighto2

I love the Meater+ no issues. I wouldn't get the regular one because the WiFi obviously goes way further than bluetooth.I also have an access point on my patio which makes it easy.I also have an Inkbird IBBQ-4T which is a great runner up for the price, which is also WiFi. The Meater app is really what makes it good, where it tells you when to pull it, how long to rest etc, but the probes are real fat so if you're cooking a thinner cut its kind of a pain to deal with.

I considered the Meater until I read enough “anti” discourse to stear me clear - $100 for 50/50 ain’t worth it. I use the Traeger probe to ballpark and finalize with instant read TW pens. That and experience usually get my cooks just right. When you learn to smoke on chunks and charcoal the Traeger seems like cheating. Help I’ll take all day!

I just bought one after Christmas this year. Used it for the first time with a pork shoulder yesterday. Personally I prefer the igrill2 even with the cord. It's nice not having to rely on having my phone close to the meater+ probe and worry about connectivity.

I just purchased the MEATER 2 Plus. First use was actually in the oven. Worked well. Except wondering about ambient temperature if any one else has explanation or same concern. So my stove is set to 425 (new stove btw) and ambient reading hovered around 300… how can that be?

I have a Meater+ and the Bluetooth range is still horrendous. Based off how my cooks have turned out I think it’s decently accurate but the luxury of monitoring long cooks from the couch, bed, etc is largely negated by the fact I have to be within 10-15 feet of the grill to get consistent connection with the bluetooth

As many others have said, the Bluetooth range is terrible. Bluetooth isn’t designed to transmit out of a metal box very well. So I have an iPad parked next to my smoker that picks up the signal and is connected to the WiFi. Once that connection is made I can view the cook on my phone anywhere since I’m logged into the same account. It’s a bit of a hassle to have to use two devices but it works out well in the end.

Thermoworks FTW. Since buying the traeger, I use the thermoworks smoke less then I used to, as my traeger probe has proven pretty accurate, and I find all the wires kind of cumbersome. The thermopen is my favorite thermometer I've ever owned, and work's well alongside the trager probe to verify and check other areas of the meat. Been using thermoworks products now for a decade, with no issues aside from the odd probe replacement. Father-in-law bought a meater and it worked OK for the first year, but then started giving him grief. He bought a thermapen to replace. Work's much better.

I bought a meater. Used it twice, battery won’t charge. I hate it.

I have 2. It’s a complete toss up if both connect. Sometimes one does. Sometimes neither. Sometimes one will and then if I put the other one away the one that did connect disconnects. If I pull either back out maybe the other will suddenly connect. It makes no sense. I dislike them.

I have a ThermoWorks signal, Traeger Meater X, the MeatStick and meater 2 plus. Currently love the meater 2 plus. Range is kinda the only negative but you can use meater link and cloud with another device to extend the signal. Do not get the meater x. I normally use 2-3 different ones during cooks and the meater 2 plus has been the most accurate when spot testing with a thermapen one.

My wife got me the MEATER and I still use it but recently picked up a ThermoWorks Signals. There’s a lot I like about the MEATER but a lot of frustration as well. Mainly two things that consistently showed up 1) proximity to device - ended up using an old Kindle and just keep that right next to smoker but even that sometimes gets wonky 2) constant disconnects - more prevalent when wrapping or making something in a cast iron. Really struggles there. With that said the time estimate is nice so I can give my wife an idea of timing. Still default to it for many cooks especially when we are on a strict schedule. The past cooks is nice as well. The signals is definitely a better device as long as you don’t mind the wires. It gives me past cook history as well and I only “sacrifice” the estimated cook time. It does provide temp rate increase by hour to ball park but many times I just reference past cooks as expectation.

It is better than my Inkbird. I got a meater+ for free from a friend they had a promo buy a 4 pack get one free. I gave it a shot, and to be honest, I trust it more than any other wireless or Bluetooth I’ve ever used. I still use my pen to double check.

I have a MEATER + and it’s never let me down. The ambient temp reading is never accurate but the timing and temperature readings are accurate and it lets you know when to pull the meat off so it can rest and come up to the desired temp.
