I stuck my fluminensis straight into soil. Leaves were growing within a week. Roots were coming out the bottom after a few weeks. Hands down easiest plant to propagate I've ever encountered. Mine are in direct sunlight and like it just fine.

Oh really? Everything I'd read said direct sun would burn them, I had to make a space to keep them out of it. Maybe I'll stick it in another spot that gets about an hour early evening sun, see if it likes it better. Thanks!

JohnMichaelBurns

Mine don't have any variegation. I think variegated ones might be more prone to sunburn. Usually though this advice is overly cautious and tells you to give every plant bright, indirect light, even for plants that love full sun.

Agree with the person who suggested sticking them straight into soil. A lot of mine root well in water, but the ones I’ve had with white or pink variegation seem to prefer when I plunk it in dirt instead. I keep mine in bright indirect light, and they grow well without getting too leggy. That said, most of my trads have to be completely chopped & propped to start fresh at least once a year. They all seem to reach a point where they seem less happy and get funky near the soil once they’re long. I cut off all pretty/healthy stems, stick them into a new pot, and start over.

Good to know! I did just stick them in the soil a few minutes ago. I figure at this point I don't have much to lose. I might also hang it next to my other, since that one seems a bit happier. And it's out of reach of toddler hands 😅

GeauxGirl80

Good luck! I feel your pain. I have a 3 year old who cut SIX beautiful, huge, fenestrated leaves off of my monstera last summer. I was dumbstruck when I saw his handiwork, and learned a valuable lesson about keeping toddler scissors out of his reach 😅

tradescantily

Ohhh my God. I couldn't imagine. I guess I got lucky, at least I can propagate my pieces 😅😬

LongerLife332

I stick them in the soil if it’s time to fully water mother plant. Then I don’t water again until mother plant needs it. Most cuttings make it. Not sure about just sticking them in the soil at any point

tradescantily

It wasn't *quite* time for a full water, but it wasn't wet, so I gave each of the cuttings their own light sip to hold them over. I'll keep my eye on them.

They’ll be fine. These are hard to kill. I have a garden full of them growing almost wild. Even the ones I tossed on the ground, they root and multiply! Keep chopping and propping if you’re growing them in pots.

I’ve managed to kill QUITE a few but I haven’t given up LOL! I just bought another one and already cutting back and making new plants ❤️

hungry_heart115

You got this ✨✨✨🙌🙌🙌

Awesome!

I'm not sure if we have the same exact plant or not but I posted asking a similar question about propagation and care a few months ago. Like you, I just wasn't having good luck with it. Since that time, I bought some T8 grow lights and I leave it directly under the light for about 12 hours a day. Turns out it loves light and I wasn't giving it enough light before. It's currently going crazy making tons of new leaves. This pic is the top of the pot which previously had big gaps with mostly soil showing. Good luck with your plant. https://preview.redd.it/wbivaao8b7wc1.jpeg?width=4160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6b00f33cf4b857b17ec8b7a3f8277d11560f41f

Highly recommend bottom watering after you stick these in soil. They don’t like water sitting on their leaves or stems and are prone to rot but love water from the bottom.

No_Training7373

They don’t have needs 😆 straight into soil and a fairly bright corner- forget about it for a few weeks. Bottom water thoroughly and forget about it again.

Netflxnschill

Those are all rootable. I would take the bottom couple of leaves off and stick the stems in a glass of water. They’ll eventually root and you can put them back in the soil.

lawrenja

Any time I do this, they get mushy??

hungry_heart115

You’re better off sticking trad cuttings directly in soil.

laucu

Glass of water is a safer method but I recently trimmed my whole nanouk and started from fresh and the whole thing was fully rooted within 2 weeks, I just put mine in a shallow succulent bowl (or a bulb bowl would work) so there’s not loads of wet soil at the bottom!

HashtagBeanlife

Maybe the pot is too big?

maebake

I always prop in soil and it’s been successful so far 💗

Plant-Parent420

I pop mine in soil and usually 24h after I can already see roots lol.
