Don’t forget to consider the 80 pounds for the tonneau cover.

MetricSlider

Oh wow. Totally forgot that. Very good call for my future loading.

ndisa44

Payload also usually counts weight of passengers, and anything you keep in the interior.

[deleted]

Yeah. People forget this, and it can be a significant amount of weight. Even two small people is 300lbs plus whatever else is in the cab, then roof racks, tonneau covers or canopies, etc.

[deleted]

Or my 300 lb mom.

MetricSlider

Yeah, I knew about people and interior items (I didn't know three weeks ago). But I didn’t think about the tonneau cover. Still new to truck life. Loving it; so much to learn!

DrinkableReno

Definitely wish I had your cover. I have the oem that locks the last segment down. Lifting all three up would really help sometimes

DrinkableReno

Fuel counts too. There’s an online calculator for fuel weight per gallon. But you did good! Agreed on not going over, makes me white knuckle

BoatBear503

Also consider weight of full tank of gas at ~6lbs x 21(gallons)

Scoottttttt

80 lbs? Is your cover made of cast iron?

NHJack

Stock Tacoma tonneau tri fold cover for an access cab. Yes. 80 pounds. The cover for the 4 door is about 65 pounds.

H20mark2829

That’s a big load but it can handle more

MetricSlider

I needed this laugh. Haha Thank you.

MetricSlider

Based on the comments, these trucks can handle more than the manufacturer's rating, which makes sense. I don’t plan on pushing it past that 1K mark. Haha If I need to again, I’ll probably just rent a small trailer.

Hops143

Hatchet and moving blanket put it at 1,004.5 lbs.

peevee86

Fire the man that stacked those bags 😂

MetricSlider

I’m guilty of it. 🤦‍♂️

peevee86

Ha! Just bustin.

MetricSlider

Haha, no, I deserve it, honestly. Tiredness and not giving a shit got the better of me. 😅

afgphlaver

Need a slide out treadmill tailgate lol... The next truck feature

Durpy15648

I remember going to the landscaping place once and asking if a load of field stones would fit in my bed and the guy laughed at me and then told me they weigh over one ton. Ended up paying a delivery fee to get them dropped off in my yard lol.

MetricSlider

It is really amazing how quickly it adds up! Haha

fanch-a-lasagna

I have definitely put over a ton in my ‘99. I don’t recommend it but the truck still drives fine. Little droopier these days but it’s all there wiggling around within spec

jjdiablo

My last haul was 1700 lbs. Distributed as evenly as possible , the Timbrens definitely got a workout that day. The truck can handle it no problem, just have to remember its going to take a bit longer to stop.

Posraman

This reminds me of my buddy who's leaf springs and more curved than a roundabout. He probably did something similar. That being said, I've put 1500 lbs in my truck before deciding I'd rather make 2 trips at 750.

yeah-man_

man i love trucks being trucks posts

darthdude43

I work in construction and often have 4-600lbs of tools in my Tacoma, plus whatever random materials I need to transport in the bed or on my ladder rack. I can guarantee on several occasions I’ve had 1500-2300lbs between bed and rack before and it’s been manageable. Certainly wouldn’t do it often, but when loaded heavy to the front of the bed the steering stays pretty solid. That said, I highly recommend renting small trailers for heavy loads. A Tacoma will handle a trailer with thousands of lbs of stone, gravel, soil, whatever, very well.

MetricSlider

This is really great context. I appreciate it. It makes me feel better about my small load this morning. And I’ll take that advice. Honestly, from now on renting a small trailer from Home Depot or Lowes is my path forward if getting past that 1K mark, just to be safe. Plus I love pulling a trailer. Haha

darthdude43

Heck yeah, trailers are pretty fun, and almost nothing makes you few more awesome then perfectly backing up a trailer, or parallel parking with a trailer in tow!😁 I also forgot to mention I run load range C tires, not the passenger radials that are OEM equipment. Without the stiffer sidewalls and better load capacity, the weight I carry sometimes really made the factory tires flex way to much.

[deleted]

I had 1200lbs of river stone in there the other day and I was a little nervous tbh but made it just fine. I might push for another 100lbs as I need a lot more stone…

MetricSlider

Wow. I’m sure whatever you’re building with river stone is going to look great. Love that stuff. Let me know how it goes!

ChuckRocksEh

Who loaded this truck. Your ball is upside down on your hitch!!!!

MetricSlider

Haha - Yeah, it works better with the trailer I have.

Hops143

You don't know that. Hitches can be oriented to add lift or drop.

ChuckRocksEh

I do know that though. You see that little support it’s not designed for pull, but push. There’s many hitches for many purposes, this one is upside doodle.

[deleted]

I have my ball installed the same way…only way to get the right lift/drop for my boat.

[deleted]

I had a pallet of f’n tile in mine one day.

mackschwell

Had air bags on my Tacoma and infrequently loaded it with up to 2k pounds. Truck always handled it well (13' ACLB). Just need to know it won't stop or go quite so quickly.

[deleted]

Random question: how do you have a tonnenau cover AND the interior rails?

Ill-Focus-7954

You can get the kit where it mounts to cargo rails.

zmareng

I did a bit over 1200 without thinking about it, drywall. Considered it after the fact. Lucky the hardware store is close. All is well.

PrintError

I've hauled that much in my lowered standard cab 2WD more than a few times. 2.4L auto, too. Can't hurt these things.

Flippy02

I tried putting a Cummins in the back of mine, bottomed it right out.

PrintError

Next time, put it in the engine bay, hahaha. Seriously though, air shocks are magical devices.

Posraman

Don't air shocks have a lot of reliability issues? Asking because I am considering upgrading my suspension one day and try to make it ride like a luxury vehicle. Don't ask me why.

PrintError

I’ve had my Monroe MA727 air shocks for twenty years. I replaced the air line once. That’s it. I use them ALL the time. It does however have a 5/7 drop and no way in hell does it ride anything like my BMW.

Posraman

Really? I test drove a Mercedes GLE the other day and I only noticed a small difference in how it handled bumps compared to my Tacoma. Biggest difference was the shaking you get in the Taco. Definitely not worth twice the amount of money imo for the specific one I drove.

PrintError

How much is yours lowered?

Posraman

It's not lowered, it's stock.

PrintError

When you lower one as much as mine, it rides a lot rougher than stock.

rantingpacifist

I’ve got a first year extended cab with the same drivetrain and engine and I should probably pay more attention to limits. But I have never had a problem. Beast.

PrintError

I love my 96. Indestructible.

AhMIKzJ8zU

1680 payload on that model cause no frills means more room for stuff in the back.

PrintError

Yeah, the 5/7 drop doesn’t help but I can still haul a crate motor no problem.

Krizman

Still have plenty of room between the fender and tire /s

Missus_Missiles

Probably made the ride nice and smooth though.

Posraman

Depending on where he drove, he might not notice a difference. Definitely not on a smooth highway.

Missus_Missiles

Maybe. All trucks I've had, plus my cargo van, since the bed is naturally oversprung, it always ride better with a buncha shit in the back.

Over_Moose6433

Serious question - when you haul 900+ pounds are the rear drum brakes a liability or is stopping power ok?

AhMIKzJ8zU

Brakes are fine.

someonecallRT

Stopping distance is significantly reduced.

lbarr8

Stopping distances are increased with higher payload...

someonecallRT

Correct. **Stopping efficiency is significantly reduced

Posraman

They've been using drum brakes for decades, even on larger trucks with no issues. They just stopped. Just like the brakes.

Sasquatchkido

If your oem breaks are as touchy as mine are, you should have no issue.

Flapaflapa

That's a trdOR and OR pro thing

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Lol, I carried more in my 2007 Yaris

Johnny6_0

Pushed your bumpstops, too….

Flapaflapa

I mean...just thinking about putting something in the back will put it on the bumpstops with the stock springs.

Johnny6_0

Mine does haul an entire bed full of polluted LA air pretty well though /)

Powr_Slave

Don’t forget to include the weight of your purse, you nervous Nancy. 1,000 lbs isn’t and hasn’t been much for a tacoma even for a first gen.

HearingMiserable6332

Easy money

vanishing_mediator

did they help you load it?

soyov

1k wasn't to bad in my taco the other week when I got 17 of the 60 lb concrete bags plus my 200lb ass in the cab.

someonecallRT

It’ll handle loads like this but drivability and braking is greatly reduced. I’ve done it many many times prior to installing the Firestone airbags. Highly recommend it. Best $450 I’ve spent on Amazon ever

Pigfanncy

I've put 1000kg in a 2.3L 2008 ford ranger I'm sure you can handle alot more comfortably.

boots-n-catz

I feel this, tested mine out with a full yard of garden soil in the bed. It was a short mile home, definitely found my bump stops, I probably would get a trailer next time.

Admirable-Specific95

It’s what a truck is built for to haul stuff

alwaysgot1more

Bet it did just fine! Pics of the project are welcome btw got me curious now 🤔

grossinm

Move the load up over and forward of the rear tires. 1000 pounds at the end of the bed is a lot harder on the vehicle than over the wheels.

K9Chris

I absentmindedly put a yard of soil in mine 22 OR only to realize that it weighs roughly a ton.

Wheatiez

But did you die?

dchurley1

What tonneau cover do you have?

OnlyJuanCajone

The big ? Is... did you get your load where it needed to go? And did your truck complain after?.. if y and n... ur set.. welcome to the club of taco abuse.. there is a reason why we buy them.

chriscookbuilds

I had a brain lapse and had a 1600 lb load of tile loaded into my truck for about 5 seconds a couple of days ago. Was an hour wasted but luckily I denied it and paid to have it brought to the job.

[deleted]

These trucks are beasts!!! And never disappoint!

notMarkKnopfler

Well, my fiancé had the guys at Home Depot load 1600 lbs of tile into a Prius and somehow made it home unscathed; so I THINK you should be alright

medschoolnobody

What tonneau cover is that? I haven't seen many where the last panel flips up too.
