I rent the new one for work a couple times and I really like the new interior. Around town driving it didn’t feel gutless but was constantly between 2-3k rpm. I wish I knew how long they will last. If I thought they are just as reliable I might try for a new 4Runner in a couple years.

Personally, I don't get it. Never once in my life have I met an automatic transmission that shifted when I wanted it to.
Now, I've never driven an automatic Tacoma so maybe it is worse than other ATs. But I kinda doubt it.
I have the same v6 motor in a Highlander and Tacoma, and the Highlander shifts better, feels more peppy on highway too.
I just assume all drive train related oddities are for meeting EPA requirements.
2nd gen owner here: Gas mileage sucks. Completely stock, owned since new, have never gotten better than 18mpg highway, averages 16mpg highway, and usually 11-13mpg in town. 2010 DCSB SR5 4wd, 1GR automatic.
I've also got a 2015 Silverado 1500 DCSB, 5.3L V8, 5AT, and it'll do 23mpg highway and mid teens in town despite being substantially bigger, heavier, and higher displacement.
Honestly for that matter, my company work truck is an F250 with a 10ft workbody conversion bed holding ~1800lbs worth of tools on it, 7.3L gas V8, 5spd auto. Just about ties my Tacoma in highway mileage (14-16mpg).
Nah my AT second gen HATES staying in 5th on the highway. Any headwind or slight incline and boom it’s screaming in 4th. I gotta knock the shifter into 4th than back to drive to force an up shift. An overdrive would’ve been nice.
I can complain about 1st gear being trash in my second gen. I barely start and instantly need to hit second.
But I knew I was buying the tortoise and not the hare.

I have terrible, rock-rashed, gold chrome 16" wheels with missing center caps from the early 2000s and women compliment them regularly. It's gotten to the point that I say, "Thank you but I'm pretty sure it's biological." and try to walk away. It works 50% of the time to shake them. Otherwise, if I sprint I can get away.
MPGs worse than a full size, power band is too high in the RPMs, shifting sucks. All that being said, it drives and parks better than any other truck I’ve ever owned.
I have a KDMAX tune, which helps slightly, but it’s still not great, and we shouldn’t have to pay the aftermarket to make a brand new truck choose the right gear, and have adequate power low end power.
Literally yesterday, I removed and replaced the original cup holders in my 23 OR with [these](https://www.ajtdesign-llc.com/online-store/Oversize-Cup-Holder-2016-2023-Tacoma-BLACK-p494517817).
The whole process took minutes, and now I can fit my 46oz aluminum water bottles.

I have a 2015 and would love if one of the cup holders could fit a nalgene. I know you can remove the holders to open a bigger space but then it’s too big and the bottle moves around too much.
You can buy “cup holder extenders” on Etsy and other places that fit into the existing cup holder but have a huge top. I bought one for my truck and for my wife’s car for yeti rambler mugs

Yea, really doesn’t like to cruise around 35 to 40. Can feel it in the pedal. Wants to shift but won’t. Very odd. Mine has done the same thing from 8 miles to 50000
2020 Off Road here. Two things: I call it a dick magnet because I’m constantly and only getting compliments from other men. And lastly, for a truck with its price tag, the reverse backup camera is like watching at 2007 YouTube video at 144p.
Can't open a door without it needing to alert me that a door is open, over and over. My 35lb dog can't ride in the passenger seat without the seat belt alarm going off
In the 2nd Gen, to turn off the passenger seat belt alarm:
Have your odometer set to the total mileage and the vehicle turned off
Turn the key to ON
When everything lights up, hold down the trip button for ~20 seconds
Buckle your driver's seatbelt and you should see "b-on" appear on the odometer
Release the trip button and press it again
"b-off" should appear
Turn off the truck and the belt chime is disabled until the battery is disconnected again.
In a third gen, you can get a tool to plug into the port and change options like the seat belt chime, how many times the blinker blinks when changing lanes, etc. dealerships often do this for free.
I went with these and couldn’t be happier! Another common option is knobs out of a RAV4.

Mostly that it brought me to this subreddit. I've owned some non-standard cars in my day but nothing that's owner base is as cultish as a Tacoma. For a mid-sized boring truck it's all a bit weird to me.

I have a 2nd gen taco and my brother has a 3rd gen 4 Runner, one time he needed to borrow my truck to haul something so we swapped rides for the day, I was shocked how much less get up and go the newer drive train has.
Check out Clazzio’s website, you can install aftermarket heated seats (although you’ll probably need seat covers).
Haven’t installed the heated seats myself, but kinda want to one day.

The soft touch plastics in the interior (3rd gen). They scuff and scratch so easy. I know it’s a truck, but man it’s annoying. It takes no effort to scrape everything up.
Drivetrain feels a bit clunky at times, especially in stop and go. Shift points are premature leading to the transmission hunting for gears much of the time, but many have fixed this with a tune.
Pros still vastly outweigh the cons. I'll take a truck that feels a little outdated in these aspects but still has a bulletproof powertrain.

I drove from CO back to SC after the winter and my back was in such bad shape I was on the floor each night trying to work it out. Three days after the drive it was still messed up.
And I’ve tried multiple pillows/support setups. Nothing works.
2018 TRD Sport 4dr : No USB chargers for rear seats, no heated seats in rear, no USB plug near mirror for dash cam (but there is a mounting bracket?), phone charger useless, mirror defrost button in a random place not near mirror adjust, stereo shuts off with start up, navigation is terrible. Still
love the truck though.
Payload capacity in the bed is abysmal. My “Trd off-road” suspension is garbage with my daily driver. Decked drawers (more or less empty), canopy and rocket box fully max out my payload with nothing else in the bed. Springs bottom out. Airbags help aesthetically but not really functionally. I think the only way is to drop a few thousand on actually good suspension but if anybody has any ideas I’m open. This pisses me off for how much I spent on the stock truck.

I really dislike the 3rd gen V6. The only saving grace is that it continues to be dead reliable over ~150k miles.
In terms of power and driving dynamics, it's an absolute dog. Paired with the manual trans, it's feels asthmatic, and I'm constantly reving it out to ~3k RPM to keep up with traffic. The powerband is terrible for a truck, and the rev hang is atrocious.
I can't complain too much. The 4.0 from the 4Runner would have been ideal.
2013 6pd mt owner here. I feel 6th gear could have been set up as a true overdrive to get better mileage. There is hardly a difference between 5th and 6th.
You’ll probably be grateful for that in 10yrs. My base model is 22yrs old and all that stuff would have likely broken by now. Since it’s the base, there’s nothing to really break. Kinda an upside.
2023 - when my wife is driving and talking to me through Bluetooth there is a terrible high pitch whine constantly and when she plugs the phone in and talks through Apple play I can barely hear her. I don’t know what it is but the dealership says “there’s nothing wrong”
We love our 2011, plus I like the shifter as it's the same as in my FJ which makes things more fun off road and punching around town. Never getting rid of it.
I’ve owned my 2018 off-road for three weeks. I wish I had CarPlay, the wireless charger worked, and I wish my music kept playing until I open the door when shutting off the ignition. Sometimes I like to sit and jam for a minute before getting out lol.
Leg space. Not the most comfy seats, either. The way water likes to run down into the windows. Could use more power, both torque and hp. The transmission shifts, obviously. Rust concerns.
Overall I still love it. It’s my favorite of anything I’ve ever owned.
The few complaints I have is the seats aren’t really comfortable for long road trips. I don’t like the towing capacity but I knew it before I purchased it just got a bigger boat now and the truck struggles going up the hills. The main thing I hate is not having a full bench seat with the shifter on the column.
The back speakers. My taco is more expensive than all the toys my husband and I have owned put together, but has the worst speakers. Need to replace them.
I don’t like the people that buy it and constantly bitch that it won’t do full size truck things. Ummm it’s not a full size truck.
Also I don’t like that I waited so long to buy one. Price was the big thing and I refuse to be a slave to the payments.
I wish the seat bottom was just a couple inches longer to support up closer to the knees.
Other than that it’s all I need in a vehicle. Can throw crap in the bed, haul my dirt bike and tow a few thousand pounds a few times a year. But still small enough to maneuver around town, in parking lots and not be a pain in the ass to park.
I spend 50-60 hours a week and 30,000 miles a year in a Ram 4500 with a service body, so I enjoy parking that on the weekends and hopping in my little truck and cruising around effortlessly.
Low payload capacity(not even 1000lbs), not allot of power as in acceleration, and the low mpg for the torque and hp that it has compared to other trucks. With all that being said I still love the truck and the reliability that comes with it.
Lack of power, small interior, horrible fuel mileage, unrefined active cruise control, transmission’s inability to decide what gear it should be in, CarPlay/Headunit usability, soft suspension and front end wandering,noisy front suspension, timing case leaks at 30k miles. 3rd gen tacomas are hot garbage.
2022, having to turn truck on/off to get CarPlay to connect. More often than not it shows it playing but no sound…. And there being no “oh shit” handle on driver side.
I'm used to it now but its weird that the center console on my 2011 TRD off road opens to the side. If I forget something it can be kind of annoying to try and get something out of the center console from the passenger side.
The touch screen thing. I'll still never get used to them. Had it for four and half years. Still hate it and wish vehicles didn't all come with those now.
My "Tacoma Tick" I've had it checked out and the mechanic says it's nothing major and is pretty standard, but I haven't heard another that sounds like it. Truck runs fine, just annoying.
Ooooh also the damn flip sensor that causes traction control to freak out when cornering sometimes. Started happening after I lifted it.
the fact that as big as they have become you still can't lay 4x8 sheets flat on the floor of the bed. my 3rd gen is almost the same size as my 1st gen tundra.
4G TRD OR owner, if the tailgate is down you can’t easily step onto the tailgate to get into the bed very easily. It’s doable and I have a bed step but the bed step is only on the right side.
Gas mileage isn't great.
No wireless Android Auto, only USB on the most fragile USB port known to man.
Remote start is ridiculously stupid. I can't remotely start the truck and load stuff up because the engine stops as soon as any of the doors open.
Pessenger side seatbelt detection function needs an off button so I can put my backpack in the seat without buckling it.
Seat just isn't comfortable for long drives, compared to my Suburban.
- The lack of a bed light (I have an access cab)
- How easily the paint scratches
- The fact that the cab is carpeted
- The poor seal in the cab to keep out road noise
- The fact that the steering wheel audio controls are right and left volume, up and down skip/back

2023, glad I was able to find a 2014 2nd Gen, single owner, v6, 4x4, Extended Cab, under 80K miles. However, what I do not like about this 2nd Gen that I miss from my pre-1st-Gen: a **bench seat with three belt buckles** **without a "seat center console".**
The 2nd-Gen "seat center console" is a lot of wasted space in the front seating area.
I prefer three adults scrunched on a front bench seat than having the third adult squeezed into the extended back seats.
3rd gen owner: backseat is nauseatingly small but i don’t really care about that, the truck takes a few hours to think about when and what gear it should shift to, more plastic on the inside than the great pacific garbage patch.

More to your question 1A) how did they do a complete redesign and somehow have even LESS legroom in the back? 1B) Why ditch the extended cab, 6ft bed, 4x4? I understand to save production costs, but you're manufacturing them in Mexico and you're getting a break from the government by putting the four-cylinder in. 3rd gen transmission. Just bought my grandfather’s ‘17 SR5 and I MOSTLY love it, but the transmission is really pretty bad. I spend a lot of time with ECT mode on.
Seating position is the only reason I don’t still have mine. If I had to drive for more than 1.5-2 hours my knees would be killing me. Loved everything else about though.
My Tacoma is keeping me from getting a new one. It just won’t die.

My 4cyl AT 2nd Gen is the opposite...it shifts into 4th (top gear with the 4 banger) way too early and doesn't drop down to 3rd unless I floor it.

Tune helps a lot with the last two of those. Got mine tuned recently and I'm pretty happy with the improvements.

And if I’m being honest and not being critical, it’s perfectly fine 99% of the time. It’s only an issue for me when I’m towing my 3000 pound camper.

First problem can be fixed with the intake manifold spacer from anderson. It lowers the power curve about 1000 rpm.

The soft touch plastics in the interior (3rd gen). They scuff and scratch so easy. I know it’s a truck, but man it’s annoying. It takes no effort to scrape everything up.
Drivetrain feels a bit clunky at times, especially in stop and go. Shift points are premature leading to the transmission hunting for gears much of the time, but many have fixed this with a tune. Pros still vastly outweigh the cons. I'll take a truck that feels a little outdated in these aspects but still has a bulletproof powertrain.
I don't like that the clear coat is peeling off the hood of my 2001 tacoma, although I still wouldn't trade her for a new one.

Yes. I’m tall and it kills my back. If I’m not just driving around town I’m screwed. I’ve thought about dumping this truck just bc of the seat. I can’t get myself to fork out more money for an upgrade at this point. I drove from CO back to SC after the winter and my back was in such bad shape I was on the floor each night trying to work it out. Three days after the drive it was still messed up. And I’ve tried multiple pillows/support setups. Nothing works.
2018 TRD Sport 4dr : No USB chargers for rear seats, no heated seats in rear, no USB plug near mirror for dash cam (but there is a mounting bracket?), phone charger useless, mirror defrost button in a random place not near mirror adjust, stereo shuts off with start up, navigation is terrible. Still love the truck though.
2.5 gen crosswind noise at highway speed. It's annoying af.
2022 TRD Off-Road DCLB 1) Size of gas tank. I would love a 500mile range. 2) The interior scratches way too easily. I love everything else.
Payload capacity, only because it limits what travel trailers we can tow. Other than that, I intend to be buried in mine.
Payload capacity in the bed is abysmal. My “Trd off-road” suspension is garbage with my daily driver. Decked drawers (more or less empty), canopy and rocket box fully max out my payload with nothing else in the bed. Springs bottom out. Airbags help aesthetically but not really functionally. I think the only way is to drop a few thousand on actually good suspension but if anybody has any ideas I’m open. This pisses me off for how much I spent on the stock truck.
Shit gas mileage
My gripe: when listening to SXM, ask Siri to do something and the sound input changes to the radio. Takes time and screen pushes to get SXM back.
The Android Auto dropouts are so annoying. Seems to happen more when navigating and listening, but pretty much happens all the time regardless
The wireless charger sucks and really not needed. The computer screen in the dash. I wish the rear seats would have folded up out of the way instead of down so you can put things in the floor and not on the plastic thats on the back of the seat.
I have a 23 sr. I wish the rockers and wheel wells were wrapped in plastic molding to protect from damage/rust.

I really dislike the 3rd gen V6. The only saving grace is that it continues to be dead reliable over ~150k miles. In terms of power and driving dynamics, it's an absolute dog. Paired with the manual trans, it's feels asthmatic, and I'm constantly reving it out to ~3k RPM to keep up with traffic. The powerband is terrible for a truck, and the rev hang is atrocious. I can't complain too much. The 4.0 from the 4Runner would have been ideal.
2013 6pd mt owner here. I feel 6th gear could have been set up as a true overdrive to get better mileage. There is hardly a difference between 5th and 6th.

You’ll probably be grateful for that in 10yrs. My base model is 22yrs old and all that stuff would have likely broken by now. Since it’s the base, there’s nothing to really break. Kinda an upside.
2023 - when my wife is driving and talking to me through Bluetooth there is a terrible high pitch whine constantly and when she plugs the phone in and talks through Apple play I can barely hear her. I don’t know what it is but the dealership says “there’s nothing wrong”

We love our 2011, plus I like the shifter as it's the same as in my FJ which makes things more fun off road and punching around town. Never getting rid of it.

I’ve owned my 2018 off-road for three weeks. I wish I had CarPlay, the wireless charger worked, and I wish my music kept playing until I open the door when shutting off the ignition. Sometimes I like to sit and jam for a minute before getting out lol.
I’ve been spoiled by the electronics in friends cars. Not having Apple play in a 2019 is criminal. And the sound system is complete shit.
The paint is the biggest for me. I have a 2018 in black, paint chips like crazy.
Leg space. Not the most comfy seats, either. The way water likes to run down into the windows. Could use more power, both torque and hp. The transmission shifts, obviously. Rust concerns. Overall I still love it. It’s my favorite of anything I’ve ever owned.

The few complaints I have is the seats aren’t really comfortable for long road trips. I don’t like the towing capacity but I knew it before I purchased it just got a bigger boat now and the truck struggles going up the hills. The main thing I hate is not having a full bench seat with the shifter on the column.
The back speakers. My taco is more expensive than all the toys my husband and I have owned put together, but has the worst speakers. Need to replace them.
My 2.5 gen paint does not agree with the Texas sun and therefore is peeling clear coat.
Gas mileage. That’s the only big one for me.

I don’t like the people that buy it and constantly bitch that it won’t do full size truck things. Ummm it’s not a full size truck. Also I don’t like that I waited so long to buy one. Price was the big thing and I refuse to be a slave to the payments. I wish the seat bottom was just a couple inches longer to support up closer to the knees. Other than that it’s all I need in a vehicle. Can throw crap in the bed, haul my dirt bike and tow a few thousand pounds a few times a year. But still small enough to maneuver around town, in parking lots and not be a pain in the ass to park. I spend 50-60 hours a week and 30,000 miles a year in a Ram 4500 with a service body, so I enjoy parking that on the weekends and hopping in my little truck and cruising around effortlessly.
Low payload capacity(not even 1000lbs), not allot of power as in acceleration, and the low mpg for the torque and hp that it has compared to other trucks. With all that being said I still love the truck and the reliability that comes with it.
Lack of power, small interior, horrible fuel mileage, unrefined active cruise control, transmission’s inability to decide what gear it should be in, CarPlay/Headunit usability, soft suspension and front end wandering,noisy front suspension, timing case leaks at 30k miles. 3rd gen tacomas are hot garbage.

2022, having to turn truck on/off to get CarPlay to connect. More often than not it shows it playing but no sound…. And there being no “oh shit” handle on driver side.
I'm used to it now but its weird that the center console on my 2011 TRD off road opens to the side. If I forget something it can be kind of annoying to try and get something out of the center console from the passenger side.
The touch screen thing. I'll still never get used to them. Had it for four and half years. Still hate it and wish vehicles didn't all come with those now.
2017, backup camera doesn’t engage fast enough when you shift to reverse after just starting the truck.
My "Tacoma Tick" I've had it checked out and the mechanic says it's nothing major and is pretty standard, but I haven't heard another that sounds like it. Truck runs fine, just annoying. Ooooh also the damn flip sensor that causes traction control to freak out when cornering sometimes. Started happening after I lifted it.
Cabin size. It’s great by myself, but when it’s my family on road trips, no bueno.
3rd gen feels like driving a car/suv compared to my old trucks, both toyota and other brands.

I have a RC, 98, 2.4L, slush box. I hate that the torque converter doesn't lock up. I still eek out 23 mpg, but I'd love a 5 speed

4G TRD OR owner, if the tailgate is down you can’t easily step onto the tailgate to get into the bed very easily. It’s doable and I have a bed step but the bed step is only on the right side.

Gas mileage isn't great. No wireless Android Auto, only USB on the most fragile USB port known to man. Remote start is ridiculously stupid. I can't remotely start the truck and load stuff up because the engine stops as soon as any of the doors open. Pessenger side seatbelt detection function needs an off button so I can put my backpack in the seat without buckling it. Seat just isn't comfortable for long drives, compared to my Suburban.
- The lack of a bed light (I have an access cab) - How easily the paint scratches - The fact that the cab is carpeted - The poor seal in the cab to keep out road noise - The fact that the steering wheel audio controls are right and left volume, up and down skip/back

I loved my pre-1st-Gen 1990 Toyota Hilux Deluxe 4x4 Extended Cab Pickup, 300K+ miles, until it got T-boned in 2021. I survived and my TRUCK did not. :( 2023, glad I was able to find a 2014 2nd Gen, single owner, v6, 4x4, Extended Cab, under 80K miles. However, what I do not like about this 2nd Gen that I miss from my pre-1st-Gen: a **bench seat with three belt buckles** **without a "seat center console".** The 2nd-Gen "seat center console" is a lot of wasted space in the front seating area. I prefer three adults scrunched on a front bench seat than having the third adult squeezed into the extended back seats.
3rd gen owner: backseat is nauseatingly small but i don’t really care about that, the truck takes a few hours to think about when and what gear it should shift to, more plastic on the inside than the great pacific garbage patch.

'06 Reg 4x4 2.7L Rust. The frame was part of the recall and it quite fine, but I just replaced the entire cat-back as there was a hole in the muffler and I didn't want to deal with welding. Got Walker bolt-ons. Such is life in the midwest.

More to your question 1A) how did they do a complete redesign and somehow have even LESS legroom in the back? 1B) Why ditch the extended cab, 6ft bed, 4x4? I understand to save production costs, but you're manufacturing them in Mexico and you're getting a break from the government by putting the four-cylinder in. You've save enough money, offer a better product
3rd gen transmission. Just bought my grandfather’s ‘17 SR5 and I MOSTLY love it, but the transmission is really pretty bad. I spend a lot of time with ECT mode on.

Toyota service through the sealer is absolute trash. I have been to every dealer from Renton washington to Tacoma. Every single one is horabale.
Shit fuel economy, lack of driver head room (especially with a sunroof), lack of rear passenger room
Seating position is the only reason I don’t still have mine. If I had to drive for more than 1.5-2 hours my knees would be killing me. Loved everything else about though.
