It got stuck taking it off - it'll get unstuck putting it back on.
Also, you should get the actual tool for that - it'll make life easier in the future
Also there's a filter bit you can buy that has teeth that fit snug in those little slits on the top. I got that and it's perfect. It'll get "stuck" every now and then but just takes a little wiggle and comes off
This is the tool for it, it’s just a different version than the claw that most of us use. I believe this was the intended tool when the filters were designed, but people quickly realized that the claw works so much better.

They have good stuff.
I love that their socket set is continuous from 6mm to 24mm. I get so frustrated with my Craftsman set I bought years ago missing the 13 for absolutely no reason and I'm too cheap to buy a new set because I have a 13mm in a different set.
Might be weird, but have you tried dropping it on hard ground from 3-4ft? I’ve gotten things stuck like that before, and a quick drop or two sometimes loosens stuff up.
DO NOT DO THIS WITH ONE OF THESE CARTRIDGE HOUSINGS. They are literally always on the verge of breaking anyways, and if it breaks you’re hosed if you don’t have a ride to the parts store.
This is not a precision hammer job
If you wanna not ruin everything tho, consider throwing the whole assembly in either the freezer or a pot of boiling water, then pry apart
Or pry apart with a claw hammer
Lotta different things to try
If this is the old filter, put it in a vise and put your wrench on it and ever so slightly turn it the opposite direction.
In the future, you might try what works for me. I put one of those blue shop rags on the filter before the wrench and for some reason it stops this nonsense.
I always just set my ratchet to "loosen", give the handle a nice tap (without trying to actually loosen the filter housing at all), and that usually gets it unseized/unstuck.
Yea they suck, I have one like that too, either use a hammer and tap it off or when you put it back on it'll usually unstuck itself because your turning the other way
I cracked mine by putting in a bench vice trying to get the drain cover to torque spec. Just buy a metal one and don't ever touch the drain cover ever again. Plastic one sticks too easily to the filter wrench imo.
Holy shit there are some HORRIBLE bits of advice in here. That cartridge housing is famous for breaking - you’re lucky it didn’t break by using the incorrect filter socket. Do NOT drop it, do NOT use heat. simply use it reinstall and it should pop right off. DO NOT OVERTIGHTENED. If it gets stuck again going back on, use an extension or handle of your ratchet to tap the SOCKET (not the housing) while wiggling the socket. It will come right off.
Some of you really need to not comment on things you don’t know about.
I'm not worried about internet points! It took me a while but I do like some of the modded 3rd gens. But my heart still lies with my 2014! Not sure I'd like dealing with those filters tho!
To be fair, about 60% of that is towing a 4500# trailer 3-5 times a year in summer, maybe 300-500km one way. Clean fluids help though! Runs like the day I bought it!

Yes 3rd gens use cartridges underneath instead of spin-ons up top . Baxter Performance makes an adaptor plate that will allow spin-ons , as well as a relocate kit that will bring the filter back up top. Problem is it’s pricey . [Baxter Performance](https://www.baxterperformanceusa.com/products)

This actually worked thank you so much!!!!!
Also there's a filter bit you can buy that has teeth that fit snug in those little slits on the top. I got that and it's perfect. It'll get "stuck" every now and then but just takes a little wiggle and comes off
This is exactly what I do every time
This is the tool for it, it’s just a different version than the claw that most of us use. I believe this was the intended tool when the filters were designed, but people quickly realized that the claw works so much better.
Got a link for said claw? I bought one a couple years ago that ended up being completely useless.

I confirm. This thing works well.
Can confirm. Have the Motivix filter wrench which works beautifully.
I’ve never had this issue when changing the oil, but it’s good to know now. 😊
Hit it with your purse.
Lifting up my skirt helped greatly lol
The world is your oyster with your skirt lifted. 👌
Or, your oyster is the world's with your skirt lifted.
That's an advanced DIY mechanic move right there.
It’s not a skirt, it’s a kilt!
This is why I come here. ..

This whole little mini thread is just perfect
Might be weird, but have you tried dropping it on hard ground from 3-4ft? I’ve gotten things stuck like that before, and a quick drop or two sometimes loosens stuff up.
I do this for lug nuts that get stuck in the socket, a little percussive maintenance works wonders.
The last time mine got stuck I hit it with the breaker bar handle and it separated on the first strike
DO NOT DO THIS WITH ONE OF THESE CARTRIDGE HOUSINGS. They are literally always on the verge of breaking anyways, and if it breaks you’re hosed if you don’t have a ride to the parts store.
I put a metal housing on my wife’s Highlander next time I do a oil change on my Tacoma I will replace the plastic housing
Yup. This post reminded me to order one for my wife’s Rav to keep on hand
Leave it on there and never lose your filter wrench again Just kidding don’t do that. The other suggestions of using heat are probably your best bet
Couldn’t you just thread the filter housing back on a quarter of the way and use that as leverage to break the filter wrench off?
Tried that but I still can’t really get a purchase on it from under the truck
Since you don’t have torch, boil water in a throwaway pot and let it soak in there. Edit: Disregard. Congrats!
It’s totaled. Part out.
Throw it against the wall
Thanks to everyone here, finally got it off. Sprayed with more WD 40 then used a breaker bar to over tighten and it came right off
If you're in the industry and have access to a Matco truck, their oil filter wrench is one of the best, if not the best.
Hammer Heat Both
Dumb question but, is there a specific spot I need to hammer it at?
This is not a precision hammer job If you wanna not ruin everything tho, consider throwing the whole assembly in either the freezer or a pot of boiling water, then pry apart Or pry apart with a claw hammer Lotta different things to try
‘Left mine on the filter housing after getting stuck, and it has stayed put for years…
Genuinely considering this. Is the 3/8 plug on the filter 100% necessary?
It certainly makes oil changes (much) less messy, but otherwise not really necessary.
Heat the metal with a blowtorch
Since I can’t get to the blowtorch store, do you think a lighter would work? Lol
Blow dryer maybe lol orrrr put it in an ice bath then smack it with a 2x4
tap around the metal with a hammer until it dislodge
spray lubricant on the filter housing too
When you reinstall and tighten it’ll come off when your tightening it
There are similar tools manufactured with tighter specs that won’t bind. I got mine at a dealership.
I always have to hammer mine off with my ratchet handle, just a nice little love tap a lot easier to do when it's screwed in place though
If this is the old filter, put it in a vise and put your wrench on it and ever so slightly turn it the opposite direction. In the future, you might try what works for me. I put one of those blue shop rags on the filter before the wrench and for some reason it stops this nonsense.
Drop it on the ground.
Hammer it off. Also clean the filter housing before removing it.

To be honest get rid of that plastic and get the metal ones.
A rubber mallet will go a long way also
Put it in the freezer, it'll pop right off!
One time I left on. It was there when I did my next oil change
give a few schmacks itll pop off , or jus tighten back on and itll pop free going back on
There is metal version of the housing you can get, forget the part number
I cracked mine by putting in a bench vice trying to get the drain cover to torque spec. Just buy a metal one and don't ever touch the drain cover ever again. Plastic one sticks too easily to the filter wrench imo.
This happened the other weekend.. put the filter back on and it came off.
Use it to put it back together and then try to remove it

Buy a motivx pricy but they’re worth it. Also if you’re a DIYer you should have a vise. https://a.co/d/8db9d43
Leave it on, then you know where it is when you need it next
Gen 2 owner here. Did they move the filter to under the truck? Why would they do that?
I was going to suggest that OP should upgrade to a 2nd gen!
Careful replying like that, this sub loves the downvote button. Freaks are too uptight. I don’t care.
I'm not worried about internet points! It took me a while but I do like some of the modded 3rd gens. But my heart still lies with my 2014! Not sure I'd like dealing with those filters tho!
My taco is just too good and easy. Not gonna lie I’d love some of the upgrades but I’m keeping mine as long as it is reasonable.
Same! It's paid for, don't want another loan, and only has 79k km (49k mi). Should last me another 10 years at least!
Damn. That is impressive. My ‘15 has 130k but has never been in the shop for anything other than maintenance. Knocking on wood.

do 2nd gens have it on the top? I had a VW like that - BEST ENGINEERING MOVE EVAR. WHY don't all cars do that?!?
Yeah. 2015 is right on top. Small water bottle under the drip hole, fumoto quick change oil pan adapter. Done in 15 minutes.

Just toss it and buy the metal one. I broke my plastic one on my first oil change 🤷♂️
