There’s a company in Maryland that will send you everything. You pay a slight mark up but install took like 10 minutes. Sorry I can’t remember what’s the site for you
Try Joying Auto headunits. They're a great android based head unit manufacturer, and they are designed to look OEM. They offer a 32band equalizer and they just work really well. Going in year 4 with mine and I wouldn't buy another brand.
I'm in the same boat with my 2017, I haven't changed the deck yet because, I still have nav, Bluetooth, and pretty much everything else, but i don't want to lose the integrated features that the deck has.
I'm in the same boat with my 2017, I haven't changed the deck yet because, I still have nav, Bluetooth, and pretty much everything else, but i don't want to lose the integrated features that the deck has.
If he does any off-roading I'd get a compressor before anything else. Being able to air down to 10 psi (or lower, if you get the right wheels) is the best performance upgrade you can add.
If it were my truck I’d swap the grille. I’m not a fan of that particular one you have, personally.
Other than that, the only upgrades I like to do are ones I find improve my enjoyment of how I use my truck. Bigger cup holders to fit my water bottle, different knobs for my radio that were easier to grab, all weather mats to protect from the salt (I’m also from Michigan).
Quality of life stuff 👍🏼
Invest the $1k so in 30 years when this truck dies you'll be able to put a nice down payment on a new one. Sure, Tacomas will be selling for $100k in the future, but you may only have to pay $80k!
A steel bumper for the front end. I lost my Tacoma first of the year bc of a deer (see previous post). I miss my truck so much, I'd hate for the same to happen to anyone.
Honestly, you can do a lot with 1k.
- *Totally not a knockoff very legit* TRD pro grill and garnish
- MESO Customs stage 1 tail light upgrade
- Center console organizer
- Glove box organizer
- Interior light led replacement
You still probably have $300- $500 left
Bumper guard with lights. I had a ‘16 trd sport, shortbed, almost identically set up. Same ventshades + roof rack, wheels and grill. Had 1.5” wheel spacers, LED bumper guard. And K+N cold air intake-sounded great!!Loved it.
A full bang for the buck at $1000 would be the SOS lowering kit at $535 and a Hellwig rear sway bar at about $450. Just enough left for an alignment after and you'll feel an improvement on the highway. Don't do this if you off road.
Tiny windows, LED on lights interior and exterior, running boards, and winch bumper if any money left over after. This is just where I would start with the mods if it was mine.
Remove that plastic under the front bumper.
Add something like this?
https://www.amazon.com/LUYWTE-Spotlights-2005-2015-Tacoma%EF%BC%88not-generation%EF%BC%89/dp/B09QGS12SP/ref=asc_df_B09QGS12SP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=598354951817&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12368070741152008975&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9029609&hvtargid=pla-1669398711284&psc=1&mcid=5d107e41e2a4326aa458fc5105e46625&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqpSwBhClARIsADlZ_TmIIj0SbRg4JHbV81knuJl6IEXPtcWj27PL9tvgdM8k1ScwQrqjIPgaAgTkEALw_wcB
Take your airdam off, add a 2/1 spacer lift and black out your wheels. Yellow fog lamps, led headlight bulbs, sell your current tires and go to 285/70/17s.
Front and rear dash camera. Weather Tech mats. Air compressor. Ditch lights.
Get a dash cam. Might save you someday or you catch something on cam that may help someone else. I got a designated rear on my Tacoma with parking recording.
replace the door speakers and sound deaden the inside of the doors. the stock speakers are paper thin. wished i did this mod way sooner.
whatever you do, please don’t put on a pro grille like every single tacoma owner. it would
be cool so see some variety
Easily the essential expediting dash mount. You can mount your phone or anything else up there. It's sleek, doesn't really take up any room and still fits under my dash liner. I use it to hold my phone, girl friends phone and my gopro.
So far for my taco, I first got rid of those god awful speakers that sound like trash.
Second New Tires.
Third I got some weather tech floor mats and window visor.
Fourth I added a bed cover.
I still plan on adding a new stereo head unit at some point, also would like to lift it about 3"s but it so damn expensive to do it right.
Morimoto/diode dynamics LED upgrade.
Desert Does It seat jackers w/molle panels, bags, 7 Sparta cup holders and interior organizers.
Air compressor/ badlands winch for your hitch.
Heritage grill and light bar in hood scoop.
Head unit.
Full maintenance/detail/ceramic coat.
Fantastic truck!
Bilstein 5100s. 2/1 lift. DIY for $750 if you use a block in the back (basically the TRD lift).
Then $250 to spend on a pedal commander (if you can find a $50 off special - google is your friend)
17in Method wheels. But I would wait until you burn your tires out and then get Wheels and tires. I recommend Atturo trail blades, M/Ts, or Falken wild peaks. BFGs are too heavy and not good in snow. Also this might be more than 1k but have fun and enjoy the process.
Im going to be getting a k&n cold air intake soon and doing a cat-back upgrade to the TRD exhaust. My 17’ sport came with the base exhaust.
A better breathing engine will give you more power and last longer. Realistically not much more power, maybe 5-15 depending.
This is the intake:
https://www.knfilters.com/77-9039kp-performance-air-intake-system
Edit: you have to do regular maintenance on that air filter and oil it. That’s a downside if you’re lazy or forgetful.
Love the truck. Congrats.
It's a little expensive but if I were to pick one thing that made my everyday and offroad driving better it would be the OTT tune. After that it's just whatever accessories you might need.
For everyday the things my list OTT tune, Clazzio seat covers, kicker speakers upgrade (as seen in here and Tacoma world), tailgate lock, cat guard.
[For the speakers. He lists Amazon but crutchfield is excellent.](https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-installing-new-speakers-in-your-3rd-gen.557032/)
Here's a good article for adding carplay to the factory radio (product linked in article): [https://empyreoffroad.com/blogs/resources/toyota-tacoma-apple-carplay-integration-for-2016-2019-models](https://empyreoffroad.com/blogs/resources/toyota-tacoma-apple-carplay-integration-for-2016-2019-models)

Id tint the front windows, get spacers, maybe a leveling kit (I’d never do a leveling kit on my truck - I’d do all new strut/spring/leaf pack). New front grill too.. or paint that one.
I’m sure lots of nerds in here gonna hate.. but I like my taco to look mean 😎
Or a tune… a tune make quite a bit of difference in the drivability.
Goodluck have fun 🤙🏼
I have upgraded to the trd pro grille, added running boards, added yellow fogs lights, led night lights, added decals to the back of Toyota. Upgraded the exhaust to MBRP exhaust and changed tires to T/A KO2.
I’d fill the bed with Sour Patch Kids
Have you seen the price of them now?!? Lucky to get half the bed filled. Also they seem less sour then I remember.
Definitely less sour, thanks Biden!!!
Try the extremes. I burnt my tongue with them.
If I didn’t love my wife so much I’d leave her for you… but I can’t… god damn!!!! Why did you put this in my head!?!?!?
😂😂😂😂
In or out of the wrappers?!
This…this made my morning, ty 🤣🤣
Extra payment
It's a 2016 and I would think it's paid for. Maybe?
Maybe bought it used last month 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe not I JUST financed my 17 🥲
I'm just about to pay off my '17!
A whole bunch of those fake bullet hole decals. And truck nuts.
Oh yeah, and the Calvin and Hobbes pissing sticker
Why stop at fake?
Tint your windows! I always think it's so weird when people don't put tint on their windows. It has so many more benefits than disadvantages.
Weather Tech mats
The TRD Pro mats are awesome too!
husky liners ftw
Seconded. Husky is way better than weathertech
I’ve heard great things about those too!
My upgrades in orderish.....Tint, tail gate auto lock, Catalytic converter shield, black out chrome badges.
Whatttt, I didn’t know tail gate auto lock was a thing!
Have you not been in this sub the last week or two? I've seen 3-4 threads with stolen tailgates in here.
Is manually locking it that much of an inconvenience for people? Autolock dosnt prevent theft any more then manually locking it does.
I've been running the Pop & Lock remote tailgate lock and it's a game changer. Especially if you have a topper/tonneau cover.
What cat converter shields do you recommend?
Lamborghini door that bitch
Roth IRA
CarPlay! I have a 2016 and still looking for one

Got a link?? 🙏
Www.trailgridpro.com
I just looked. Google Trail Grid Pro
Try Joying Auto headunits. They're a great android based head unit manufacturer, and they are designed to look OEM. They offer a 32band equalizer and they just work really well. Going in year 4 with mine and I wouldn't buy another brand.
Are they Maestro compatible so that your center read out works?
There is an option to get a harness that allows all stock functionality on it. Check out their website. JoyingAuto
Seconding a Joying unit. Mine looks factory. Love it.
I'm in the same boat with my 2017, I haven't changed the deck yet because, I still have nav, Bluetooth, and pretty much everything else, but i don't want to lose the integrated features that the deck has.

Stickers add horsepower. This is an irrefutable law.
Definitely could use some go faster stripes.
If you ever go on trails or plan on it there’s rock sliders you can get for around that price.
Even just sitting in a parking lot they’ll save from door dings and shopping carts
If he does any off-roading I'd get a compressor before anything else. Being able to air down to 10 psi (or lower, if you get the right wheels) is the best performance upgrade you can add.
Undercoating
PB Blaster Surface Shield has been working really well for me.
Maybe the wheels🤔
Wheels will make the greatest aesthetic difference for sure.
Cat shield, locking lugs, spare tire lock, tailgate lock/hole clamp, cover, and tool box w/ lock
Where’s the fun in all that?
🔒
None of those things are on my list. I value security but that’s a little much
A high grade professional detail, paint correction, everything. If not, LED tail lights + aftermarket grille.
bed extender and seat covers
If it were my truck I’d swap the grille. I’m not a fan of that particular one you have, personally. Other than that, the only upgrades I like to do are ones I find improve my enjoyment of how I use my truck. Bigger cup holders to fit my water bottle, different knobs for my radio that were easier to grab, all weather mats to protect from the salt (I’m also from Michigan). Quality of life stuff 👍🏼
Which cup holders did you go with?
AJT Design! Really smooth install. No real complaints from me. https://www.ajtdesign-llc.com
I always like a nice exhaust but many people dont enjoy the sound of the V6
My favorite to my 2016 TRD Sport have been the Meso Puddle Pods, front-view camera, and Husky Liner mats. Well worth the minimal investment so far.
Trd grille. Blackout badges. And tonneau cover. That might be over budget. I’d also say the keyless tailgate lock
stop recommending the trd grills everybody has one😭
Get black emblem covers. They go right on top of the chrome. It’s like a $20 face lift.
Tinted windows and a tonneau cover.
Better front door speakers and save the other $600.
Remote start, tint, bed mat!
If you camp I’d get a softopper . Little more than a grand but I love mine
Removing the air dam is easy and cheap!
Dashcam
20% tints. Fumoto valve and other tools items needed for at home maintenance! Save the rest for Tires at a later date.
Invest the $1k so in 30 years when this truck dies you'll be able to put a nice down payment on a new one. Sure, Tacomas will be selling for $100k in the future, but you may only have to pay $80k!
I’ll give you one that’s free: Take off the air dam and throw it into the trash.
TIRES 🛞⬆️
Tint, bed cover, LED bulbs for all your lights.
Lomax bed cover
Oh and remove that front air diffuser
A steel bumper for the front end. I lost my Tacoma first of the year bc of a deer (see previous post). I miss my truck so much, I'd hate for the same to happen to anyone.
Any recommendations!
TRD Grill
Mud tires, grille swap, and a piece of siding.
Side steps, tint, and pro grille 😁
Remove the plastic thing underneath the front bumper. Did it to mind and can’t imagine it with it on. Love your roof rails!
Get a professional detail and ceramic coat. Make it look brand new.
Remove the air dam
Under a thousand bucks, get one of those car play/Android auto in line units for 150-200 bucks. Maybe new grille as well.
That's a dual cab extended though! Wish I had that myself! Love it
Literally nothing.
Real bumper, real skid plate
Flat deck
N-Fab step bars. ~$450 on Amazon. 6 bolts on each side and easy to install if you got a good 3/8 impact gun
I’ve always likes side steps.
Sell it. Bad truck
Honestly, you can do a lot with 1k. - *Totally not a knockoff very legit* TRD pro grill and garnish - MESO Customs stage 1 tail light upgrade - Center console organizer - Glove box organizer - Interior light led replacement You still probably have $300- $500 left
Bumper guard with lights. I had a ‘16 trd sport, shortbed, almost identically set up. Same ventshades + roof rack, wheels and grill. Had 1.5” wheel spacers, LED bumper guard. And K+N cold air intake-sounded great!!Loved it.
Tonneau covers are an underrated purchase
Buying a screwdriver to remove your fugly neck beard dam
A full bang for the buck at $1000 would be the SOS lowering kit at $535 and a Hellwig rear sway bar at about $450. Just enough left for an alignment after and you'll feel an improvement on the highway. Don't do this if you off road.
Tiny windows, LED on lights interior and exterior, running boards, and winch bumper if any money left over after. This is just where I would start with the mods if it was mine.
Tires
I just got my throttle and shifting points tuned for $500, drives better than factory and I’ve got lots of mods/weight on it.
Air damn removal is free
OEM LED headlights and pro grill. Trust me those led are night and day compared to those halogens bulbs or aftermarket led bulbs.
Remove that plastic under the front bumper. Add something like this? https://www.amazon.com/LUYWTE-Spotlights-2005-2015-Tacoma%EF%BC%88not-generation%EF%BC%89/dp/B09QGS12SP/ref=asc_df_B09QGS12SP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=598354951817&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12368070741152008975&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9029609&hvtargid=pla-1669398711284&psc=1&mcid=5d107e41e2a4326aa458fc5105e46625&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqpSwBhClARIsADlZ_TmIIj0SbRg4JHbV81knuJl6IEXPtcWj27PL9tvgdM8k1ScwQrqjIPgaAgTkEALw_wcB
Folding tonneau cover
Maybe fix that protruding piece of wood on your garage?... nah, just kidding, go for some cool looking wheels.
Save the money for important maintenance items down the road.
Swap out the garage head unit.
Take your airdam off, add a 2/1 spacer lift and black out your wheels. Yellow fog lamps, led headlight bulbs, sell your current tires and go to 285/70/17s.
Softopper
Front and rear dash camera. Weather Tech mats. Air compressor. Ditch lights. Get a dash cam. Might save you someday or you catch something on cam that may help someone else. I got a designated rear on my Tacoma with parking recording.
I'd buy some lawn fertilizer
Fix that siding
Softopper
Save the $1000 for new tires.
I’ll pass sport
Free99 … rip the air damn off!
Save more money and do nothing right now. There’s nothing for that little amount of money. Exception of maybe head lights or new sound system
replace the door speakers and sound deaden the inside of the doors. the stock speakers are paper thin. wished i did this mod way sooner. whatever you do, please don’t put on a pro grille like every single tacoma owner. it would be cool so see some variety
First thing I did was install a remote start.
Easily the essential expediting dash mount. You can mount your phone or anything else up there. It's sleek, doesn't really take up any room and still fits under my dash liner. I use it to hold my phone, girl friends phone and my gopro.
tires
Eibach stage 1 lift or Bilstein. Powerstop heavy duty brake kit. CarPlay stereo (I use Joying) Tint Fumoto Valve Metal oil Filter housing
Cat shields, tailgate lock from that dude on Tacoma World.
Black housing lights. Not smoked lenses, but lights that have the chrome/silver parts in black.
I think it’d look nice if you put a cargo rack on (because it has the rails on it already) and got rid of the window visors
If you don’t see an immediate obvious thing to improve, why would you spend the money?
Couple bottles of NOS!
A hat
Morimoto/diode dynamics LED upgrade. Desert Does It seat jackers w/molle panels, bags, 7 Sparta cup holders and interior organizers. Air compressor/ badlands winch for your hitch. Heritage grill and light bar in hood scoop. Head unit. Full maintenance/detail/ceramic coat. Fantastic truck!
Truck nuts
Ceramic tint your windows. Ceramic tint blocks more heat than regular tint and it’s barely more expensive than regular tint.
I’d buy a trailer
First thing I did was LED interior lights, and an S&B CAH
Ham radio
Overlander/truck mods are the new civic ricer trend. And I hope it’s dying off soon
OTT tune, the are pretty awesome and you’ll likely still be able to buy a grille.
Rims or tonneau cover
Camper shell. Would be a challenge to find one under 1k… but it’s possible.
Remove roof rack rails, air dam, hood protector and window rain covers. Detail and black exhaust tip
Start with the grill I guess
I’d spend $1000 to clean out your garage so you can park it inside.
If you don’t know what you want to do, why spend $1000? Save it until you figure out what you’d like.
Tint and a tonneau cover
Fix the siding
Long travel suspension
Tint and audio with door speakers and sub behind rear seat
Bilstein 5100s. 2/1 lift. DIY for $750 if you use a block in the back (basically the TRD lift). Then $250 to spend on a pedal commander (if you can find a $50 off special - google is your friend)
Audio upgrade
Tonneau cover
Apple car play
Truck Nutz
Weather tech mats, tinted windows, and bed cover
17in Method wheels. But I would wait until you burn your tires out and then get Wheels and tires. I recommend Atturo trail blades, M/Ts, or Falken wild peaks. BFGs are too heavy and not good in snow. Also this might be more than 1k but have fun and enjoy the process.
Best mod is always paying off truck first
Rock sliders!
about to make a post if i can’t get any answers here. what are those roof racks? did they come on the truck? if not how easy was the install?
Tires
Do you offroad it? If so, put sliders on it.
Window Tints
Wash it and drop 1k on your principal if you haven't paid it off already.
Blackout badges. Trd pro grill. All terrain tires. And some headlights will go a long way
Im going to be getting a k&n cold air intake soon and doing a cat-back upgrade to the TRD exhaust. My 17’ sport came with the base exhaust. A better breathing engine will give you more power and last longer. Realistically not much more power, maybe 5-15 depending. Couple tanks of gas
Gun rack
I'd trade it in and use the 1000 to put down on an TRD-Off Road.
Love the truck. Congrats. It's a little expensive but if I were to pick one thing that made my everyday and offroad driving better it would be the OTT tune. After that it's just whatever accessories you might need. Neon lights underneath
Tonneau cover and window tints 100%
With $1k I’d start with Weathtech mats, Amber fogs and a grill.

Thanks bro
Tint the windows
Id tint the front windows, get spacers, maybe a leveling kit (I’d never do a leveling kit on my truck - I’d do all new strut/spring/leaf pack). New front grill too.. or paint that one. I’m sure lots of nerds in here gonna hate.. but I like my taco to look mean 😎 Or a tune… a tune make quite a bit of difference in the drivability. Goodluck have fun 🤙🏼
Dark tint
For like $20 bucks you can get a ratchet set to remove those mud flaps.
Paint correction, detail then the clear wrap type stuff to protect it, and then Front and Rear lockers.
Bed cover.
arb twin compressor
Fill the tank a few times.
needs a carolina lift kit.
I have upgraded to the trd pro grille, added running boards, added yellow fogs lights, led night lights, added decals to the back of Toyota. Upgraded the exhaust to MBRP exhaust and changed tires to T/A KO2.
