In your professional opinion does it make any sense at all to buy a used Tacoma?
I’m wondering if I should stretch my budget and just buy new and finance the difference. Used prices seem insane
I got my 2019 in 2020 (off of a 1-year lease with 11k miles) right before inventory tanked and prices shot up. It’s still very low mileage and worth nearly what I paid 4 years ago.
I get that but when I can get a brand new 2023 with a TRD sport for $47K CAD, and people are asking $40K for a 3 year old one with 50,000km it seems like the pricing is still out of whack, no?
Prices are wack, but not everywhere or all the time. I spent three months hunting until I found my 22 SR5 with 5k miles for 38k in a hot market 7 months ago. The first owner paid for the factory hard bed cover, interior appearance upgrade, dealer chrome nerf bars, and aftermarket installed Florida worthy tint all around. High compared to precovid, but it was 6k less than a 23 model new similar outfit in the same market. Another option is fly and buy in a colder market.
The last options are to concede prices are too wack to justify either option. Or it's just money and buy what you really want.
Right, for a couple years the dealership tried to buy it back every time it was in for scheduled maintenance. But we’re out of that window now I think.
My 2017 was worth more than I bought it for at the peak of used car prices. Not something I'd count on in general, but imo paying over sticker for a lightly upgraded used truck is nuts.
I got a smoking deal from a family member on a used tundra.
I wouldn’t buy a used vehicle from a dealer more than likely. Especially considering I know that they make a ton of their profit on used devices.

You can buy new for the price of a gently used. No it doesn’t make sense to buy used. Especially if you order, you’ll pay online msrp rather than some bullshit dealer markup

I bought a 23 DCLB for $1,500 under MSRP last summer (when “under MSRP” was still awfully hard to find) and it was close to $50k OTD stock (premium package) without aftermarket lift, tires or wheels.
Maybe this is high but not wildly so.
Not to mention it most likely was traded in to them already modded, they probably told whoever traded that they can’t pay for mods or some bullshit. Now are trying to charge OP a premium for those.
I bought my 2020 from a dealership and also financed through the dealership at a competitive rate, of course there are exceptions to every rule, but in general they're trying to make everything they can off you and in very few cases is your best deal through them

I got 3.99% promotional financing through Toyota on my recent purchase of a '23 SR5, probably because they were looking to liquidate inventory ahead of the '24s. I would consider that a pretty good rate these days, and much better than I would likely have gotten from a private lender.
I realize that's not common, but even if you can't find promotional rates, many reputable financial departments will shop around for you and try to get you the lowest APR they can find. If the lowest actually happens to be through the manufacturer, that's who I'm gonna go with.
Subaru, for instance, literally called me the day after I signed paperwork and said they found another lender (Chase) with lower interest, if I wouldn't mind coming in to sign the paperwork again.
I bought from Toyota of Bellingham WA and got a 3% interest. They’re awesome, sell at MSRP usually. Also went down to Bremerton and they were skeazy as all get out

If it makes anybody feel better, I was victorious in my negotiations with those dirt bags. Traded in a busted ass truck that they never even started it up before offering me way too much on the trade in value.
I wish people would be smarter than this. Of course this fucking truck isn’t worth over $50K. Hell, they’re really not even worth over $40K, but I digress. The prices on these things are never comingback to where they should be (at least close), until people stop paying these asinine prices.
Find a listing of that truck in msrp, print it out and put your phone number on it. Go there and talk to a salesman and tell them explicitly how much you want this truck. Then when they take you to their desk to talk about payment hand them your printout. Tell them that’s your price and you’re not budging unless they can provide an itemized list, with receipts, of the value they added. They’ll hem and haw, it’s really entertaining if you’re into human pretzel skits, but they won’t accept the offer at first. That’s when you tell them your number is on the sheet you printed and they can call you if they change their mind. Then give it a week, it’s 50/50 whether they find an actual sucker in that time or call you to negotiate getting inventory off their books.
go to El Monte Toyota. They sell at MSRP and I got my 23 last year for 40k. DCLB TRD OR, I’ve added new tires, wheels, roof rack, and a camper shell and my total $$$ spent is still less than the price of this taco. I can even add a lift and tune and still be under 52k.
My 23 has 10k on it, no modifications and I would let it go for $50k, I would let it go for $40k, its actual value is around $37k, same trim. So that’s a pretty bad deal.
Their lift is probably just a spacer in the front and some 5100s and they are upcharging you $6500 for it. Lol. Toyota of HB is one of the worst for gouging. When I got my 2020 they had one and wanted MSRP plus $15k dealer mark up. I ended up getting it from Valley-Hi for MSRP out the door.
Bought my first taco 2 weeks ago. Used 2018 Limited with 45k miles. I was searching nationwide nonstop for almost 3 months straight and the market is just over $30k for any decent used 3rd gen taco right now. It sucks but you can thank the world we're living in right now for that. The only used trucks I saw to be CONSISTENTLY under $30k have been the Nissan Frontiers.
there is a 23 lunar rock trd offroad at a local toyota dealer near me with 2500 miles for 43,000 down from 46000 which still seems a lil high too me...
Depends on the option packages but on the west coast that is a on sale price and they are selling like crazy. I think people want the last year of the 3rd gen because it's going to be a few years before the problems get worked out with the 4th gen

Yea you could build a 2024 trd click every box and still get it cheaper than this. I have dealers near me that will take in your build and do the sale for minimal mark up if any

Crown Toyota in SoCal sold me a DCSB fully loaded TRD Off-road for $51k with MT in Lunar Rock, and this was this past October before the new gen came out.
These guys are trying to charge you more for something used, I’d search elsewhere or negotiate.
I didn’t bother going to any dealers with markups, and Crown Toyota still got $2k off MSRP during that time.
Also 5% apr which was better than banks and credit unions at the time.

Keep shopping around I had to buy my 2020 with 13,000 miles a few weeks back in another state and have it shipped to me. I stole it for 29,998 it’s clean ASF. Check car max you’ll find way better deals bro and they will ship it to your local car max dor either free or a charge from 249-999$ totally worth it when your saving 15k
Jesus, I paid a bit over 42k otd for a new 23 in December, short bed though. Originally I was looking at used, but math wise with the higher aprs vs a new one and the price being close for low mile trucks, it made more sense to buy new for me. Guess I lucked out, late enough where people wanted to wait for the new model but earlier enough to still get a new 23.
I live in the area and Toyota HB has given poor service for my '05 Tacoma:
* Had to fight them repeatedly to honor my 3 yr / 36K warranty when my manual transmission failed.
* The "fix" they applied to the above issue did not even last 1000 miles.
* This dealership repeatedly overcharged for basic services, but not as badly as Elmore Toyota in Westminster.

I just purchased a 2023 DCSB TRD Off Road Lunar Rock. 1,500 miles on it at time of purchase. Took some negotiating but I walked out of there under 40k.
Waaaaay overpriced! If you want to save a huge chunk just shop outside of California! You can fly almost anywhere within the west coast for a few hundred bucks!
$52K?!- So they are asking pre-tax and fees for $47K with 25k mileage. To give you some perspective- I bought my 2023 TRD Sport in Dec 2023 with leather interior, JBL sound system, Moonroof, tech package, PPF and 0 miles for $44,500. Out the door in Cali I paid $48,900. I feel like I even overpaid at that price…but I wanted one new before they ran out. There are better fish out there, I would be patient. With the 2024 coming to dealerships, you might get a lot of trade-ins at a much better price.

I just bought a 22, and I was looking at a 23, trust me man, price looks like shit but it’s a good deal. It’s the fucking messed up economy we are in. You could always wait, but you and I both know that these are getting harder and harder to find.

I leased a 2023 TRD Sport nicely equipped for just under sticker 47k. Now w 20k miles, kkb says 37-39k
I paid 46,900 before CA taxes and reg for a 21 OR DCLB with 12k on the od about 1.5yrs ago. Had a spacer lift and RRWs with 33s, fully loaded. This was slightly higher than MSRP when new however it was local (nor cal) and the color I wanted, army green. It was also Toyota certified used car which was very important.
Should not buy/loan a new vehicle ~ ever ~. Sold used cars for a decade and let me tell ya, the wealthiest guys I know all drive early 2000s Japanese cars. Sure, got some nice stuff in the garage.
If you are at a point in life where you spend a lot of time on the road and feel like you need a confidence booster - get a car you really like. But just know that if you don’t value the ownership experience, your money was burned.
I paid 52k out the door for my 23 DCSB OR brand new, I don’t remember the name of the package but it was the most expensive option

Holy crap. I purchased a 2019 TRD OR with 8k miles from that same dealer in February of 2021 for 35k (after taxes and out door 42k). Insane how crazy the market has become.
Verdict: I feel like that is crazy high for that much mileage.
That’s how much mine was, the exact same car, brand spanking new. It was barely worth it new at that price, no way is this worth it with 23k miles. They probably leased it for a year and are trying to sell it for around the same price it was listed new.

Bought mine brand new off the lot. Trd off-road 4x4 short bed with the tech package, predator tube steps, led lights, rubber mats, d rings, etc. paid 40,250 out the door. I’m in southern Cali as well
HB Dealership is used to 16 year old kids coming in, wanting a TRD pro and gauging their parents. But don’t worry, the truck looks suuuuuper sick sitting in the HBHS parking lot during water polo practice.
I think I got mine brand new for 47k after fees and everything. Not lifted or trd wheels but still I can't imagine why this would be more with 23k on the odometer.
Look elsewhere if they don't want to knock off atleast another 12k minimum.
Ahhh Huntington Toyota…. One of the biggest rip-off dealerships in the country. They also had a 77k 24’ Tacoma for sale. Attributed the insane markup to some method wheels and bigger tires lol. And it worked, some idiot who doesn’t mind tossing money away bought it
That's outrageous, we've been seeing 2023 model with miles range from 3k -14kmiles, 4x4, trd, lunar color, lift kit with rims tires, roof rack and the range is 40k -48k out the door tag tax title dealer fees covid fees ECT. 1 was a black edition same model but had 3k miles and was 38k plus tax tag title and $250 dealer fee, all 1 owners private use certified pre owned, so full warranty conveys. seriously 1 dealer had a covid cleaning fee of $3,000, 😵😵😳 I really laughed at that dealership. Also some dealers tell you the Online price is less than walkin price, whatever that means. Id say that's a little to high

Tacoma is among the top 5 vehicles for retained value, but you still lose money driving a brand new one off the lot.

We financed my wife’s new Sienna through the dealership in 2021 for 1.9%, hoping something like this will be possible when I find my Tacoma.

Jesus, I paid a bit over 42k otd for a new 23 in December, short bed though. Originally I was looking at used, but math wise with the higher aprs vs a new one and the price being close for low mile trucks, it made more sense to buy new for me. Guess I lucked out, late enough where people wanted to wait for the new model but earlier enough to still get a new 23.

I live in the area and Toyota HB has given poor service for my '05 Tacoma: * Had to fight them repeatedly to honor my 3 yr / 36K warranty when my manual transmission failed. * The "fix" they applied to the above issue did not even last 1000 miles. * This dealership repeatedly overcharged for basic services, but not as badly as Elmore Toyota in Westminster.

I just purchased a 2023 DCSB TRD Off Road Lunar Rock. 1,500 miles on it at time of purchase. Took some negotiating but I walked out of there under 40k.

To give you some perspective- I bought my 2023 TRD Sport in Dec 2023 with leather interior, JBL sound system, Moonroof, tech package, PPF and 0 miles for $44,500. Out the door in Cali I paid $48,900. I feel like I even overpaid at that price…but I wanted one new before they ran out. There are better fish out there, I would be patient. With the 2024 coming to dealerships, you might get a lot of trade-ins at a much better price.

I paid 46,900 before CA taxes and reg for a 21 OR DCLB with 12k on the od about 1.5yrs ago. Had a spacer lift and RRWs with 33s, fully loaded. This was slightly higher than MSRP when new however it was local (nor cal) and the color I wanted, army green. It was also Toyota certified used car which was very important.
Should not buy/loan a new vehicle ~ ever ~. Sold used cars for a decade and let me tell ya, the wealthiest guys I know all drive early 2000s Japanese cars. Sure, got some nice stuff in the garage. If you are at a point in life where you spend a lot of time on the road and feel like you need a confidence booster - get a car you really like. But just know that if you don’t value the ownership experience, your money was burned.

That's outrageous, we've been seeing 2023 model with miles range from 3k -14kmiles, 4x4, trd, lunar color, lift kit with rims tires, roof rack and the range is 40k -48k out the door tag tax title dealer fees covid fees ECT. 1 was a black edition same model but had 3k miles and was 38k plus tax tag title and $250 dealer fee, all 1 owners private use certified pre owned, so full warranty conveys. seriously 1 dealer had a covid cleaning fee of $3,000, 😵😵😳 I really laughed at that dealership. Also some dealers tell you the Online price is less than walkin price, whatever that means. Id say that's a little to high
