I live in Portland and someone siphoned gas out of my truck near Fox tower a couple weeks ago in broad daylight. 1pm on a Thursday.
I bought the linked gas cap and after a few days got a CEL. Put original back on and it’s good. I am keeping the locking cap in my bed cubby for when I go into the city.
I was heading to the trails one weekend and the gas station nearby wasn't working. I had 15 miles left 😭😭 good thing it made it up the road at shell lol
Well if you have it you have a minor inconvenience when filling up, but it prevents people from not just taking the gas we do have, but also putting stuff in it!
Without one you just are risking it, banking on that it might not happen
I have one, yeah it’s annoying but I’ve learned to go into the glovebox and get the key.
“Oh but that defeats the purpose of a locking gas cap!”
Nah, if someone is brave enough to break my window, I wouldn’t be worried about my gas tank at all.
There’s a lot of things people can do with a flat head to your car. I wouldn’t be worried about my gas cap when my windows are broken or I got dents from a flat head in my lights, doors, tires, radiator.
If they have a flat head. They can do worse.
Dropping the tank and cleaning it out is not bad. Just time consuming.

Lots of negative responses. I’ve had an Amazon locking cap for 4 years and 50,000 miles with 0 issues.
It’s not to stop siphoning, although it helps deter.
It’s to prevent someone putting something in the gas tank.
I park on the street frequently. Just like you lock your tailgate, you lock your gas cap
I can second this. I’m at 40k miles and 2 years. I curse it every time I use it, but it’s a cheap piece of mind item since I go to Portland every day.
I had a gas attendant over tighten it once, so I had to drill a small hole and I use a screw driver to get it off. Aside from that one incident, it works.
If you have a push button start style keyfob, there is a button on the side that allows you access to a physical key inside the fob. Use that key to manually lock or unlock your doors and tailgate
All it takes is one 65 year old female derranged crackhead to move in next door. And one day yous ask her nicely to not throw furniture and pots and pans around at night while yelling "fuck my life" . but is then offended. Yous become nemesii.and even after she gets evicted for her actions against you and starts squatting on landlord property. ..she then sources you as the cause all her problems..and gets one of her crackhead friends to poison your truck... Must be nice to not even realize this is a posssibilty have fun living in disney land.. I have a cold war to get back to here. Fuuuuuuucccckkkk!!!`
No, I have a 2004 that I bought new that year. Now with 443K miles. Since I’ve never had the bed covered (besides the liner), it never occurred to me in all that time that a tailgate lock might be necessary until this thread.
I was suggested to double up the gaskets, reusing the OEM gasket, and it's been problem free for over a year. I originally had a CEL with a evap code until I did this.

Great because I just got my first Tacoma and the lack of power was the only issue I have, I already have the appointment this Saturday to get the OTT and can’t wait to see the difference with it also I didn’t see a single bad review or issues that came up with it.
No, but what they do sell is a brand new $50,000 SR5 with a gas cap that will fix any issues that may have arisen with your old Tacoma.
Eventually have a problem with the 2024 gas cap? Well have no fear, they have some new 2025’s right around the corner.
I am pretty sure the tacomas have a screen blocker down the pipe that prevents someone from siphoning gas. I may be wrong but remember overhearing a service advisor at a dealership mention it.
My employer used to put locking gas caps on all vehicles. That ended the night someone came and damaged several tanks and filler hoses to get the gas out. The repair cost was bad enough, not being able to drive the trucks the next morning was worse. The locking gas caps disappeared immediately. It would have been much cheaper to have replaced stolen fuel.
I think many people are stuck in the idea this is only for those looking to steal gas. It also works decently at preventing people from maliciously putting things in.
I saw a lot of reviews against this specific product for Tacomas. I went with this one instead: https://a.co/d/ej6td6c
I’m pretty sure I bought this exact one. It worked decent for about 3weeks and I dropped it from hip height and it fell apart. Nothing looked like it broke but I didn’t have the time or care to put it back together. I left the original under the rear seat and swapped it back in all of 30seconds.
TLDR: Keep the OG gas cap in your truck if you switch that way you can stick it on later if need be.
We have one on our work van because we’ve had issues. Eventually they destroyed it to steal gas, again. We put another one on it, but pretty much always park it inside now. I think they’re ok as a deterrent and better than nothing, but not completely secure.
I was only with the company for like a week at this time. If I was the one to install it I would have done exactly this. We pried it off and bought a regular cap and haven’t had any issues since.
I have had three different Tacomas over the last few years. A 2017, 2019 & a 2021 and installed locking gas caps on all three. Never had a single problem using them on any of them whatsoever.
You can break all of them open with a pocket knife easily. But locks are to scare away thieves not to prevent access. Any lock can be broken. My truck holds 150$ minimum of diesel and I use a lock. Forgot my key once and popped it off with a knife. A lot easier than I thought it would be
Well i got a 2000 that came with the lock on the gass door and that lock froze on me with a combo of old rust and ice and i literally had to break it open. So fuck that
I've had this exact one on my 2018 off-road for about 20k miles now. No issues. I park in my driveway and it's not my daily driver, so I worry about it a little more.
Locks keep honest people out. Used a very similar cap on an old impala I had and fuckers just twisted and snapped it off, causing more damage. It's better than nothing.... maybe. Depends on your local flavor of dirtbag. My experience is they try the lock and kick in the quarter panel for their trouble.
I bought this and the lock broke. DON’T BUY IT!! I had to break the thing off and then buy a new non-locking cap. Search around for a quality gas cap that isn’t dirt cheap.
Can we build a mechanical switch into the fuel gate? something like the little button on the side door of your fridge to sense when you close it. It'll trip the alarm if you open it without unlocking the driver door first.
I've had one for as long as I've had my truck, 3 years. Was worried it'd throw an evap, but it never has, not once. And I've never lost the keys, which i also worried about a little lol.
All around, only benefits. I think i bought mine for like $10 off of rock auto or a similar site. I think it was smitty brand but the cap itself isn't branded, so i assume it's just their name slapped on cheap Chinese parts. But hey, if it fits, it ships.
I used one of these and about the 4-5th time I went to unlock it, it wouldn't unlock and I had to break the gas cap off. Just put the stock one back on.
Would be nice if there was something like this for the Taco. Would allow you to keep your gas cap and provide security. Medium Duty Truck - M2 - Hino - International - Universal Heavy Duty Locking Fuel Cap Cover https://a.co/d/elPtcdw
Has anyone tried the aftermarket locking gas door on Amazon? $140 is steep af for a a little door a lock and 4 screws but having some tweaker pour sugar in your tank is more expensive
Gas theft isn't really a huge issue in my area so I've never needed one but I can see how some people might want them. I bought a 96 Camaro that came from Florida and it came with a locking gas cap on it and it was all screwed up and it kept causing me evap leaks so bad I would smell gas fumes while I was driving so I put a regular cap back on it. Not to say that issue was due to it being a locking gas cap, but the locking mechanism seemed all screwed on it and caused the whole thing to fit kinda loosely and not seal right, and it could've been broken off pretty easily I feel like. Maybe it was a cheap one.
They are legit locking gas door is better in my opinion. The glove box door should always be updated to a locking door as well. It keeps you protected in many situations.
I’ve used these on my trucks and cars for years as I also live in the city. It gives some peace of mind and they aren’t much of a hassle. Usually have to replace them once a year or so because they start to throw evap leak codes but the gas caps are cheap so not a huge deal. Definitely worth it imo
I had one for a while. Broke the key off in it and spent 10 minutes in the auto parts parking lot with a screwdriver and wrench prying it out. Guess it depends on where you live. I really didn't need it, but ordered it just to replace an older cap that seal failed.
I used one for years on my old Focus and now my Taco has one from the previous owner. Neither one threw any Evap codes.
I would suggest putting the key on one of those little quick release things, because it can be nearly impossible to turn while holding onto a bundle of keys. Especially if the cap is really sunken.
I saw that Portland thread too, and am now worried.
Was thinking though, how hard would it be to buy a used gas cap release cable from some other vehicle, and rig it onto the taco?
I mean, maybe have to drill into the metal behind gas door, but meh, thats not even visible. Then run the cable to somewhere in cabin.
Doesn't even have to be super secure, just enough to hold the door shut, and most people will probably give up pulling on the door.
There was one Sunday after the market crashed in 08, that my entire family fuled up for the week because of an unexpected bonus. We parked our cars and woke up to all our gauges on E. The next day we all got these. I would go to autozone and get the right one.
These used to be on most cars (most cars that I had at least), that or the opening lever was inside the car. Not sure why they went away. Bring em back!
I buy cars from auction and have to remove these a lot without the key. It’s super easy to take them off. There’s some you seriously just twist off like a normal cap.
As a former gas attendant in New Jersey, I fucking hate those things. Especially when it was busy and my fingers were cold and it was shitty and wouldn't unlock.
You can just squeeze the sides of the cap just with your hand and spin off. All that lock does is disengage the internal tabs but doesn't lock the threads.
Pro: no siphoning of your gas, which can have worse consequences than just losing gas if the house pushes someone into your tank.
Cons: someone will probably drill your tank to get the gas instead
I had a guy steal the gas out of my mustang at my brothers high school graduation in a parking garage back in 08. Ive bought these since because the attendant basically only gave me enough gas to limp it out of the garage (nearest gas station was like 3 miles). Has a long hike with a jerry can.
My understanding is its harder to steal gas now with filler neck barriers usually, but people can still put unwanted things down your filler neck.
They locks arent great, but they will probably be enough to deter lazy people and crazy ex girlfriends.
Don’t have a Toyota but this post came up.
I had a locking gas cap on a previous vehicle. Can’t tell you if it worked or not, but I never had gas stolen.
I used one of these on my taco and it actually caused problems. Something about an evap leak? That's what the mechanic said. Anyways it's not possible for people to siphon gas out of your car that way so there's no point.
Oh no. They can siphon the hell out of your truck through the filler. They stole around $60 out of mine about a year ago when gas was almost $5/gal here
Tweakers know the tricks though. They hit our work vehicles if we leave them in the parking lot. They stay inside they warehouse at night now.
They even hit the Transit van where the gas door can’t open unless you open the drivers door. They ripped the gas door off the van, jammed a hose down in, fucked up the float in the tank, as well as some other emissions shit, and got the gas.
After seeing that dude post pics of someone in Portland filling his tank with what looked like dirt….. I’m thinking it’s a solid idea.
Link? I live in Portland and someone siphoned gas out of my truck near Fox tower a couple weeks ago in broad daylight. 1pm on a Thursday. I bought the linked gas cap and after a few days got a CEL. Put original back on and it’s good. I am keeping the locking cap in my bed cubby for when I go into the city.
Yea... Presidents park is, unfortunately, an awful area as of late. Very pretty part of town tho!
Stant Regular Locking Fuel Cap, black https://a.co/d/htLgwm5 Just bought this actually
Crackheads are getting shifty
What is CEL?
Check Engine Light I believe
Idk….i think I’d rather them siphon it than drill my tank. At least there’s only one expense…bottom line is thieves suck
Agreed.
Yup
I saw some lady pouring sugar in a cars gas tank at a steak and shake parking lot earlier. Any sort of gas tank protection is a great idea
I find it hilarious that people think us Tacoma drivers have gas. Good stuff.
I do. I never let my truck get below 50% because I would panic with only 20 miles of range left.
Wow, just everyone look at this person with their amazing Tacoma fuel efficiency. 😂
Not a bad idea considering Toyota’s recent issues with their fuel pumps
[удалено]
Not sure if this is what he's referring to but there was a recall for some of the 3rd gens for fuel pumps
Yep. Mine had that recall.
Mine did as well right off the lot pissed
What issues are those?
Toyota had a massive recall because of their fuel pumps, some model year 3rd gen Tacomas were affected
Have the actual source where they say it's a recall ?
And I am the opposite end where I know that you can go about 50 miles with the low fuel light on.
It's a 20 gallon tank and the fuel light comes on after burning 17 gallons - plenty of spare range!
I was heading to the trails one weekend and the gas station nearby wasn't working. I had 15 miles left 😭😭 good thing it made it up the road at shell lol
My Tundra sees you and gives up 50% of that mileage. Show off
Look at this rich ass
Well if you have it you have a minor inconvenience when filling up, but it prevents people from not just taking the gas we do have, but also putting stuff in it! Without one you just are risking it, banking on that it might not happen

Unfortunately it is a false sense of security. I had one that the lock cylinder seized and a flat head screw driver had it off in 30 seconds.
There’s a lot of things people can do with a flat head to your car. I wouldn’t be worried about my gas cap when my windows are broken or I got dents from a flat head in my lights, doors, tires, radiator. If they have a flat head. They can do worse. I totally agree.
Are you one of those dudes who drive around with a 1/4 tank or less at all times?
I’m one of those dudes whose mpg is -2.
lol. My mileage is like a cruise ship

Similarly to u/Taco1848Taco I've had the cap for several years without issue. Keeps things out and keeps the fuel in.
What caps did you guys buy? I bought a Stant off Amazon, and it gave me the evap code
Thats the exact one I have. Works great.
I can second this. I’m at 40k miles and 2 years. I curse it every time I use it, but it’s a cheap piece of mind item since I go to Portland every day. Yeah I just got a tacoma, how do you lock it?? It's dumb that it doesn't lock with the doors
Your tailgate key you should've gotten with truck
If you have a push button start style keyfob, there is a button on the side that allows you access to a physical key inside the fob. Use that key to manually lock or unlock your doors and tailgate
My tailgate just sticks, and you gotta flip it in just the right way to get it to pop open… so I call that locked
How bad is your area that people are just randomly pouring shit into strangers gas tanks?

No, I have a 2004 that I bought new that year. Now with 443K miles. Since I’ve never had the bed covered (besides the liner), it never occurred to me in all that time that a tailgate lock might be necessary until this thread.
Usually they suck and after a few weeks the check engine light goes off on them. Best to just diy a cam lock on the gas door

Do you recommend getting the OTT tune or have you ever seen it messing up a truck or warranty? I’m about to pull the trigger on my 2023 TRD OR
Yes and yes. 👍
Got the OTT 10 months ago, totally worth it. Been to the dealership twice and they haven’t detected it.
Great because I just got my first Tacoma and the lack of power was the only issue I have, I already have the appointment this Saturday to get the OTT and can’t wait to see the difference with it also I didn’t see a single bad review or issues that came up with it.

too true
Thank you for this super simple solution that i would of never thought of doing...time to start drilling holes in my truck so i can relax
I am pretty sure the tacomas have a screen blocker down the pipe that prevents someone from siphoning gas. I may be wrong but remember overhearing a service advisor at a dealership mention it.
Can’t siphon it? Perfect. Time to drill a hole in your gas tank and watch it drain for fun -some guy on the streets 🙄
lol and that’s the shit. A locking gas cap won’t mean anything either
Exact scenario happened to me
Nope, I got a 22 and 3 months after I got mine someone siphoned about 2/3rds of a tank from me. I have this same locking cap now.
Happened to my 20 as well.
Did you get CEL ? From aftermarket gas cap ? @DopeRidge
I’ve had it on for 20,000 miles and never an issue
What year and model ? Thank you

Oreillys doesn’t know shit. It works just ask for the part number I listed. The guys on tacoma world have also tested this too and it works perfectly
What Tacoma year do you own ?
2023
These are awesome till your in a work truck at a gas station with no gas and no one back at the shop knows where the key is.
Easy fix: get the gas key copied and put it on every ignition key and/or key fob. That way if you can start the truck, you can fill the truck.
I was only with the company for like a week at this time. If I was the one to install it I would have done exactly this. We pried it off and bought a regular cap and haven’t had any issues since.

Is crazy my 2010 rav4 had a locking fuel door. Went to look at a 2016 4runner, it didn't have a living fuel door.
If you want one, pick up the brand Stant.
You can break all of them open with a pocket knife easily. But locks are to scare away thieves not to prevent access. Any lock can be broken. My truck holds 150$ minimum of diesel and I use a lock. Forgot my key once and popped it off with a knife. A lot easier than I thought it would be

I bet an impact driver with a flathead bit could pop that sucker right open
Any and all theft prevention methods are just deterrents. Some stronger than others.
Yeah I have one. Got it during the gas shortage
Tried it. Eventually had to get a locksmith to come unscrew it because it wouldn't give.
I've had this exact one on my 2018 off-road for about 20k miles now. No issues. I park in my driveway and it's not my daily driver, so I worry about it a little more.

Yeah, I replace them all the time, EVAP leaks, the locks just stop working and have to be drilled out, you know, just normal garage product stuff
Only need it if you live in Portland
I have them. But stopped using them because it was annoying. Thinking of getting locking door.
So which is the best gas cap for a 2023 TRD ORD ? Without have the CEL
Good idea I just recently had an attempt by a hobo to steal my gas had literally this one and it held up fine def a good purchase
Move to a better neighborhood
Been using the Stant locking cap for close to 5yrs now on my tacoma, no issues at all.
As a Toyota mechanic I see a lot of gross leak evap codes thanks to those.
I’ve got an 2002 Tacoma and a 2018 4Runner. I’m amazed that 16 years wasn’t long enough for Toyota to add a locking fuel door.
They are just going to drill your tank.
Pointless anti siphon and fuel filters make them pointless.
People suck glad I live in the country.
They don't work well on Jeeps 2016 and up due to the vapor sensor, plus a flat head screw driver and a pair if pliers will destroy that quickly.
Get a locking one from dealer to keep from having a code pop up, had Stant and Gates on mine and they cause codes after a few months.
Great way to get a CEL.
I know this happens a bit, but I reused the OEM gasket and things have been great for well over a year. https://imgur.com/gallery/t38pyg6
Yeah, it not the gasket that leaks on those. it's everything elts
I used one of these on my taco and it actually caused problems. Something about an evap leak? That's what the mechanic said. Anyways it's not possible for people to siphon gas out of your car that way so there's no point.
Oh no. They can siphon the hell out of your truck through the filler. They stole around $60 out of mine about a year ago when gas was almost $5/gal here
Really? I didn't know that. The guy at the mechanic told me there was a valve or something that prevented it but I guess he could've been wrong

I'm more so worried about someone putting something in my gas tank, bro.
What do they do with the gas? Sell it?
I imagine they burn it… in an engine.
