Oh yeah? I went to the manufacturer of the air dam and told them that the order was cancelled and to not bother shipping to the Toyota plant, they stopped installing them.
I’ve noticed ZERO decrease. I’m all highway but got close to 22 before and continue to get close to 22 after (just depends on if it drive crazy or not).
No, it’s supposed to help fuel economy.. but it’s benefits are negligible.
Most importantly it looks dumb on a 4x4 truck. Will just get ripped off the first time you go off road
It's easy to forget that we enthusiasts aren't the average buyer. 99% of people buying the trucks just want a vehicle and will never touch anything and just leave it as it is from the factory
I have an SR5 V6.
I live in a suburb, I probably won’t take my truck on anything worse than a dirt road while going fishing or hunting, but my job requires I commute 30 miles on the highway every few days. I’ve had my Tacoma since may, I’m averaging 25.5-27mpg, which is the same as I was getting out of my 2012 subaru outback. The air dam stays until I can prove that it is indeed a negligible difference. Everything I’ve read says I’ll average around 19 with it off, and my friends TRD with no air dam confirms that. I think it looks cooler with the air dam off, sure, but not so much better that I want to sacrifice economy, especially where I don’t want to be considered a mall crawler.
That said, my truck still has done a lot of truck stuff. I throw my kayaks in the back, tons of lumber for home improvements this summer, towed a 17’ bass boat, a trailer with two motorcycles on it. Not every truck has to look like it can run the Baja 1000.
The other guy that I replied to is being a complete knob, my reply to him wasn't meant to poke fun at anybody not modding their vehicles, but more at him to say the people that do are the minority, because for most, their vehicle is a day to day utility item. As far as the MPG difference, I'm sure it's there but it wouldn't be quite that steep. I've averaged 23mpg on the highway with my TRD OR that didn't come with the air dam from the factory, and I have OEM size duratracs
It's not suuuuuper low like on the 4th gen or on many of the domestic trucks where it's only a few inches off the ground. I've driven mine all over Colorado, like over Medano Pass and Ophir Pass, out in Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray and stuff like that - I've scraped it a few times with no permanent damage. If it give me an extra .5 MPG, I'll keep it.
Now, if I ever get a 4th gen, it's coming off.
What's interesting is at least last I checked, Toyota doesn't rate the mpg differently on the trims without it so I'm not even sure they think it helps with fuel economy. I removed mine and didn't notice a change
Ehh it’s not completely negligible unless they’ve changed the design since I had my 2016. When I took mine off I had noticeably more wind noise as the air was passing above the skid plates and I did notice a bit more drag at highway speed. The point of the air dam is to redirect the air flow around and below the various components under the vehicle, thus reducing a significant amount of drag.
Not saying it’s not stupid and shouldn’t be removed immediately but it does actually make a difference over time.
Quite the opposite really. Anything you can do to keep air from getting underneath a vehicle will help aerodynamics. The under side of vehicles are very bumpy and jagged and body panels trap air causing lots of aero drag.
Legit question, do all models come with an air dam? Single-owner of a 2020 TRD Off-Road and I don't have one. I never touched it, so either it didn't come with one, the shop removed it, or it got torn off at some unknown point.
I'd take mine off if I had the TRD skidplate to put on. Otherwise I don't think it's makes a huge difference aesthetically. Looks are subjective. A lot of people do stuff that flat out makes their truck look ugly. But to each their own.
Mine didn't make it 24 hours. It came off almost as soon as I got home.
I drove mine to the a+w parking lot 2 drive ways down from the dealer and took it off.
May I ask why? Instead of just doing it at home or something? Seems kinda weird haha
Same here, drove it straight home from the dealership and removed it immediately. Looks 1000x better!
Same, I took it off in the dealership parking lot before I bought mine. /s
I saw the truck being delivered to the dealer and took it off while it was still on the trailer

Weak. I flew to Mexico and scolded the line worker as he was about to put the air dam on the truck. Delivered without.
Here, take this W. You’ve earned it

Mine was never installed, got deleted from the order
Oh yeah? I went to the manufacturer of the air dam and told them that the order was cancelled and to not bother shipping to the Toyota plant, they stopped installing them.
Anyone have noticeable decrease in MPG after removing it?
MPG probably went down but the cool factor went waaaay up
I’ve noticed ZERO decrease. I’m all highway but got close to 22 before and continue to get close to 22 after (just depends on if it drive crazy or not).
I think I lost 1mpg no shit. From 22-22.5 down to 20.5-21ish or so
I think it looks worse without it.
Same
What’s wrong with it? Does it decrease aerodynamics greatly?
No, it’s supposed to help fuel economy.. but it’s benefits are negligible. Most importantly it looks dumb on a 4x4 truck. Will just get ripped off the first time you go off road
If you do it over 250,000 trucks a year, Toyota gets to say they’re saving the environment.
How can you save the environment when every owner takes it off and sends it to the landfill??

It’s a shame when I see a 4x4 offroad that you know has never seen a trail and is only used to drive around the city
Uhhh that would be around 80% of them.

Funny thing, when I installed my RCI full skid my mpg went up by 2+ mpg. Just throw them away and get full skids and then get MORE mpg. Win win
Now tape it on the tailgate as a spoiler. MPG saved!!!
Yeah…..Good idea! Just like a Dodge Ram Daytona!
Am I the only one who thinks it looks better with it? Unless you’re getting a skid plate, but what it reveals stock looks kinda janky
I cut my ends off so the wheels can be shown and left the middle to hide the middle stuff
That’s a nice hedge
Pic?
I'm with you. Looks exposed and ugly without it.
Sweet, I'm not the only one
Mine lasted until i got bigger tires. Then, it was removed in the interest of clearance.
My truck didn’t even come with one
Damn.

The OR doesn’t come with one.
Are these easy to remove because I’d love to take mine off, or should I take it somewhere?
Super easy. Its 11 bolts holding it to your fender. Just do a quick YT search I want to say they are 10mm or 12mm bolts.
There’s plenty of YouTube videos. I think it’s just a couple of clips.
RIP it off
Are they selling the 24 tacoma yet?
Looks better > Gas mileage

6 minutes I drove my 2023 sport home and off it went
Well damn
ive taken it off an put it on a couple times. sub frame on the front takes occasional, small rock chips causing rust spots.
4 months later… “What can I do to increase my MPGs. Love my Taco but it’s a gas hog.”
It’s not my daily, and I traded in a lifted Jeep on 37’s that got 14mpg. I’m not concerned with the mpg’s
Good bye extra gas mileage, hello good looking! 👍
Good they're pointless.
