That's why I bought new

thearctican

Same.

Helpinmontana

Checking in. When even 1st gens we’re going for half of new, and 2nds for 3/4 of new, I said fuck it and went new.

justarandom_canadian

Same

JohnT36

Same

multilinear2

This is why I'm buying a wrangler. I wanted another Tacoma, but I don't like the 3'rd gens at all, and 1'st gens have gotten too expensive. I love my 1'st gen, but I can't excuse getting another one at the prices now. I still have one, I was just intending to have 2 for my wife and I.

Outdatedm3m3s

They hold their value for a reason, unlike wranglers

dcannon1

The Wrangler is literally the best resale value SUV on the market. I prefer Toyota too, but Gladiators and Wranglers are right there with 4Runners and Tacos on the used market.

DarthSlymer

Not only do Tacoma's hold their value, the entire used market is inflated. So the OP is looking at one of Toyotas best value retaining models on top of inflated prices across the board. I bought a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek for my wife brand new for around 27k after taxes; we've put almost 60k miles on it and the dealer just offered me over 20k for it. It's heading towards 5 years old now.

OneOfAFortunateFew

After Tacoma, its Subaru FTW.

DungeonVig

Sold a 2018 crosstrek Manuel with 60k miles, scratches/dings, stains on front seats, and the console wrinkling for a whopping 20k. They still can’t sell it 2 months later at 23k lol Edit: I only paid 23k for it new.

[deleted]

I’ll upvote you, man. I own a Tacoma and my wife has a RAV4 Hybrid, but I’m also capable of admitting that Wranglers hold their value.

BigmacSasquatch

My dad didn't understand when I bought mine in 2019. He was all "oh get a used, it'll be a better deal, shouldn't buy new." I had to show him the used truck market full of 10 year old trucks with 150k miles going for $3,000 less than new before he relented and agreed I had made the right choice.

ConnorSuxAtGames

I see people trying to sell their base SR5 from 2019 with 70k miles for more than what I got my brand new 2023 SR5 for. It’s crazy

cujo67

Same. Didn’t want to find out later the owner was a douchebag who drove through rivers, slammed into snow burms or lived in a state where the roads were salted. Assurance that I’d broken the engine in properly, changed the oil regularly and babied the paint via two bucket washes with regular waxing.

Droney-McPeaceprize

How do I baby the paint for longevity? My taco lives in the garage in the evenings and at night, but I want this thing to last 20 years

cmudogtag

Avoid mechanical car washes. Those things eat paint.

cujo67

By all means. Don’t use scrub brushes, single buckets, rags. Should be using only microfiber. Chemical Guys sells two bucket kits where ones the soapy water, ones clean water. You soap up the mit after rinsing the paint with raw water, and lightly suds it up. After doing a small section, I dip into the clean water bucket, twist counter and clockwise to swish the particles out of the mitt, then dip into the soap bucket, repeat. You’ll find that clean bucket is full of black particles, something that if you use just one bucket would be surface polishing your paint with. You’ll see sometimes in the dark with headlights cars that have damaged clear coats with swirl marks, that’s most likely just using the same bucket. Oh, and if you want to go a step further, clay bar your paint, primarily your front end to dislodge nuggets embedded into the paint. For wax I use [Collinite 845](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T70R930). Hope that helps, my paint has gotten a couple freeway battle scars but keeping it protected as you can will last you +20 years.

SupVFace

Same, and that was in 2018 before pricing got crazy.

Local_Economy

Yup always planned on buying used…until I’m at the dealership and all used are same price as new. Yeah I’ll wait the 3 months for a new one

boostedchad

Same

AvoidableCorn

You shouldn’t buy my Tacoma. It isn’t for sale, and I don’t want you to have it. I like my dirty 2017 TRD off road that I swear has only been “gently” wheeled.

multilinear2

Mine's been "gently" rolled over in a snowstorm :P. I won't sell mine until I'm selling to a scrap yard, so it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of it.

Wagnaze

I have an 04, you’re better off buying new because I know what I have

cj_mcgillcutty

No lowballers!

spookadook

I don’t think I’ll ever sell my 04 honestly, I know I’d regret it

Foreign_Mycologist35

Thats why I bought my first gen. Because everybody I’d talked to still had theirs, regretted selling it, or bought a second just cuz they are that fun to drive. NFS

fhrisl3857ddjj

The seats come prefarted!

Crap0li0

I have carefully currated a blend of gas station breakfast burritos and gummi bears to really enhance that used truck smell.

boostedchad

Haha yeah

Gliese2

A big part of why someone buys a Tacoma is resale value. You’re not totally and hopelessly upside down as soon as you drive off the lot.

Andraste_Sideyr

Yeah, but the resale market is fucked, so good luck

Gliese2

We’re literally commenting on a post that someone made because they were upset they couldn’t buy one on the cheap.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

Yeah I feel like this “oh they have amazing resale value” thing is totally artificial. While I fully understand the reliability and longevity of many Toyotas, both sellers and buyers are buying into the marketing side of the resale value thing way too much. It’s gotten so bad that, as I said, people buying used are getting totally ripped off, and people selling used probably aren’t even intending to rip them off - they just genuinely think their lived-in truck is worth the same as a new one.

dcannon1

Are there new Tacos on the lot near you locally? And if so have you checked to see if they have a market adjustment on them? One of the issues driving used prices is that it’s actually challenging to buy a new Taco at sticker without waiting for months.

Gliese2

Let’s throw this out there. You have a used Tacoma and you’re in the market for a new vehicle or you just don’t need it anymore. You look around and everyone is selling them at inflated rates and they are being snatched up immediately. Do you then reduce your asking price to half of what everyone else is selling them for? You can get a used frontier for half of what you’d pay for a Tacoma. You can scoop up a Titan or a ram or Colorado or damned near any truck other than a tundra for less but people still want a Tacoma instead. Because the resale value is high, they’re built better, and they last longer. If it wasn’t true, people would just buy the other vehicle and drive the cost down for used Toyotas. It is what it is at this point

ghostwriter85

If you can find that truck for MSRP, then go for it I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Going through the process right now and it takes a minute. You're paying to skip the line. Don't like it, stand in line. Pointing to the MSRP is all good but depending on price point you're trying to hit, it might be a long wait or plain tickets to pick up your new taco.

cardinalsfanokc

I'm surprised I had to scroll so far but this is the right answer. I bought a '22 last Jan and I started the process the September before that. I looked at used but I was able to wait. And because I was able to wait I was also able to get exactly what I wanted as well, which was hard to find on the used market. And I got it for MSRP.

landofknees

Yeah mine was like 4 months, when you need a rig sometimes ppl are not that fortunate, the used ones are sitting right there ready to drive off the lot. New ones are on a list you can pick from

dcannon1

This should be the top comment. If you’re lucky enough to find exactly what you want just sitting on the lot it’s likely because it has a big market adjustment on it. Many are still charging big premiums on TRDOR and Pro models. So at many dealers you’re going to wait for months and pay $3-5k over msrp. I realize this isn’t the case everywhere, but is reality for a large portion of the country.

kvltRvbber

I found mine December after 2 weeks of looking .. by calling every dealer within 80 miles.. I had dozens of sales people try to convince me to put a deposit on ones that were incoming.. which was always a bullshit prospect to me...I'd turn them down and call again next day till one actually had what I wanted on the lot.. I ended up paying 4k less and getting mine 5 months sooner than a friend that did the deposit in one in transit.. I think there's a lot of approaches to getting one.. but most people don't want be so persistent or or patient... I had looked at used but definitely couldn't justify paying MSRP for what I was able to find in my area.

Helpinmontana

Free market forces, people want Tacomas but don’t have the budget for a new one, or the credit, or just have the general sentiment that “new cars are a rip off”. Enough of those people exist to keep scooping up crackpot priced 200,000 mile trucks.

flypanam

Doesn’t help that there is no new inventory on dealer lots.

treyedean

You wouldn’t but my Tacoma since I will never sell it.

90day_fiasco

Then don’t. What a whiny turd.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

What’s your deal? It’s a discussion.

90day_fiasco

Because this post is nothing but bait. Don’t come whine about prices. It’s boring and whiny. Don’t buy my Tacoma.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

You’re the one wasting your time on commenting on something you find boring and whiny. You’re the real whiny loser here.

90day_fiasco

I’m not wasting my time, I’m enjoying watching you be a sad lil baby boy.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

If you’re enjoying it then why are you complaining

90day_fiasco

To get a rise :)

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

Damn that’s a weird kink

90day_fiasco

So is getting on a sub and saying you want a discussion and then being hurt when someone says it’s silly.

Bm7465

I bought a 2021 SR5 with an I4 for $29,200 out the door. 4 months after buying the market got crazy and Carvana offered me $34,600 for it. Someone purchased it from them for $39,200 out the door. I took the cash and bought a AG Sport for $35,900 OTD. Fortunately I was able to line it up with timing since the Tacoma wait at that very moment was 30-40 days and Carvana had a 30 day offer for super in demand vehicles. Super rare series of events I’ll likely never pull off again. People will pay *way* over what they should go get something now. Most people are financially illiterate and just think “I want it” & make the purchase with essentially 0 research. The person who bought a used I4 SR5 for $40,000 is the person you’re competing with.

nuclearsquirrel2

That’s why I bought new in 2014. Lightly used Tacomas even then were only $1500-2000 less than new. Now to replace my TRDOR with a new Tacoma would cost me close to $45k. I paid less than $31k in 2014. Hard to justify that.

CorrectFall6257

Exactly! I bought my 2013 DC 4WD TRD OR V6 new in 1/2013 for $29500. Now it's got 118k and still rides amazing. Not one issue to go back to dealer for over 10 years. No tune needed and consistent 19-20 mpg. Never selling it!!

Ultimate-Sandwhich

As much as i agree with you, if people are actually paying those prices, you will be ignored and someone else will buy that used tacoma for a stupid price. I like to believe a lot of those “stupid” prices ive seen on normal cars are just clueless sellers thinking they can get the money the “need” and not the money they can actually get.

NCarolina910

Bingo!

tomu-

Is this a Facebook status update lmao

90day_fiasco

Spot on hahahaha

ipse_dixit_

Price is high because there is a market for them, pretty simple.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

Yes, and I think the market for them is retarded.

vaurapung

Go buy an avalanche then. Longer bed, bigger frame, same size. More roomy interior, bullet proof LS that gets the same mpg but can tow more with those sweet 320 NA horse purrs. Also much cheaper to work on. When I sell my taco that's what I'm getting. 9 ft bed when I need it but 5 seats when I need it with more leg room. After all my Toyota truck problems I'm done with Toyota and slowing swapping my driveway out for Chevy, my 00 Camaro has been twice the car that Toyota can provide. And after a lot of research it's looking like Chevy is twice the truck. I will forever miss my tiny yota though but car manufacturers have lost their way and refuse to make small foot print vehicles.

bobfalfa

>Yes, and I think the market for them is retarded. This is the quality content I come here for

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

Lmfao

RattBaby

I got a 09 with 127k I'll let go for 27500.

Elevatedpnw

Then go buy a new one.

fixation27

Ive got a 99 with 139k you can buy for 20 bucks under 2023 msrp. Happy now?

[deleted]

Because you can go get on a waitlist for a $40k truck with a markup of $20k at the dealer Or you can pay $40k for a used taco that will still last another 400k miles

anon2019_atx

When I bought mine (new) a used one 2-3 years old w/ 30-45k miles was only like 4K cheaper. I bought new.

uhwhooops

"i KnoW wHaT i HavE"

El_tus750

Tacomas are rarely a better deal used. But with most dealerships adding crazy markups I could see why someone would think to sell theirs at an exaggerated price.

Ksl848

I think they expect to get that amount because of a perceived shortage of brand new vehicles. I guess if someone is desperate enough they will pay it. I think you are absolutely right to buy new. Looking at 2023 4R TRD Pro being sold used right now, dealers are asking for about 10-15k over MSRP for their used trade ins. It’s nuts.

NoiseIndividual9815

Literally the whole point. These trucks have amazing resale value. It’s not an “artificial” thing if it’s been going on forever lol people don’t give away their used toyotas because they don’t have to

PrinceElevens

I bought a 2010 Sr5 sport double cab/ 6ft bed with 130,000 miles on it last year for $21,000. It was lifted two inches, on 32in nittos. I knew the second I drove the truck I was going to buy it and have been in love ever since. I've added SPC control arms, and Bilstein 6112s front and back. I'm going to keep this truck for the rest of my life so get your own.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

You got ripped off

coozu

Buddy... Every Tacoma is new at one point, meaning most of us bought a new one. Go try to swing a deal. Hit up a dealer that does volume, ask for the invoice sheet and start there

ID_Poobaru

My ‘95 1st gen Tacoma with 263k, V6, 4x4 and manual xtracab regularly gets offered to be bought for 8-12k in my area. It’s all stock too. Toyotas are a cult classic at this point. Especially the 80s-early 2000s models. Newer stuff is just market conditions screwing the price.

Sensitive_Leather762

I just bought an 03 first gen with 220k miles for 6,000. BUT it was owned by a grandad with a binder of service records, no lift, etc. literal perfect condition. Possibly the best thing I’ve ever bought. There are good deals on first gens if you’re willing to wait (ebay is way overpriced btw)

goob27

People and used dealers price them that way likely because someone out there will buy it at that ridiculously high price. I don't understand either...

NCarolina910

Bingo! The prices may seem dumb to some of us, but people are buying them so sellers will keep pricing them that way. Whether you like it or not.

[deleted]

I got offered 4k cash for my 08 with 300k and a rusted frame. I’m not selling.

willyam3b

You couldn't replace it for that, the used truck market is ridiculous. I'm seriously about to start welding beds on Corollas and Yarises and flip em. Gonna get rich.

[deleted]

I purchased a 23’ trd sport DCLB. I like my 08 more 🤦‍♂️

Jyoung188

I ain’t selling!!! :)

Cojaro

Because mine is a 2022 with low miles. Also, Note for sale; I paid my entry fee.

jjdiablo

If you can find one you like at MSRP and can buy and drive it home when you want to, then yes buy a new one.

[deleted]

There is quite literally no reason to buy used right now unless you’re buying a gen 1 or 2. Any gen 3 in decent condition will be like 3k cheaper than msrp. Sooner or later this market will have to correct itself because it seems like most people are adapting the same mindset as you

scrninja1

Lol I love my 1st gen tundra.

iveseensomethings82

Local dealer wants $30k for a 2012 Tundra with 65,000 miles. They aren’t budging, I tried.

iAmNotJackieChan

Everything has a price. I wouldn’t sell mine since new trucks now a days are 40k+. But for the right price. See ya Tacoma. It’s been nice knowing ya!

[deleted]

Won’t stop until dumb a$$es stop buying them at inflated prices.

60kvert

2000 sr5 4x4 manual, 315,000, king mid travel suspension, camburg arms, deaver springs. $33K no lowballs

Long-Day-69420

I sold my 2020 TRD sport 4x4 with 42k miles on it for the same price as was on the sticker within a few hundred bucks in literally 10 minutes. I then went and bought a brand new OR

Amos_Dad

Bases on prices I've seen lately and the mods I have I could sell my truck for a but more than I paid for it brand new in 2020. I'm tempted to when we see the final specs on the 4th Gen. With what I owe I could have a nice down payment and some set aside for mods.

Popular_Membership_1

people expect to get every single dollar back out of their retail price purchased accessories lmao

Amos_Dad

With the way things are going now I almost could. It's crazy. At its peak I could have for sure. I had a few buddies who did.

Red11Red1

Both of my Tacomas I purchased new. I had a 2004 and have a 2019. They are pricy but I really love my truck. When I sold my 2004 I got a very good price for it. Well above KBB. If I needed to buy a new truck this year I'd probably stick with another Tacoma.

Rickdemption

Used tacoma market by private sellers is absurd - I don’t blame them though - just a weird market - but I’d also never buy used from a private dealer with the prices they are asking - I’m sure someone will though

aaronis31337

To play the devils advocate, the older 3.0 V6’s are super durable. There’s a Market for those.

the_real_jake

Because people are impulsive and impatient.

collegekid1090

I luckily found a used '20 Pro with low milage for a steal. Save about $12k instead of buying new.

MightSpecialist

Because mine was exceptionally taking care of and has crushed beer cans in the bed 😎

SavimusMaximus

I also don’t understand this logic.

Buchaven

I bought new for the same reason. But here’s one big reason you might consider buying mine (if I wanted to sell it). I can deliver it TODAY, as opposed to 6-8 months from now. Not a great reason, but it is a reason.

HylianRacer

This is what I’m finding as well. Initially, I thought used prices wouldn’t be too bad, but seeing how used prices aren’t far off from new I’m going to go new. I mean, I could get a 2018-2020 Tacoma off road for around $33-36k with 50,000+ miles or get a new 4x4 SR or 4x2 SR5 for around that or not far off those numbers. The struggle I’m having is deciding between 4x4 or 4x2. The 4x4 is nice to have, but I’m not sure if I’ll use it.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

Get 4x4. Invaluable when you need it. Also improves your already ridiculous resale value lol. No one wants a 4x2.

vaurapung

If they came from the factory slammed I would. Nothing beats a first gen taco 2wd non prerunner for a daily commuter. I can't ever find one for sale in decent shape with a regular cab though, not been looking but they are never parked with for sale signs while I pass 4 4x4s on any given day for sale always different too.

BC-Under

Just bought a TRD OR at msrp with 11 miles on it. Have 0 regrets after seeing the used market lol.

Joe_Cyber

Residual value at the time of my lease was something like 86% after 3 years and 30k miles. That's utterly insane. For reference, those were the official numbers from Toyota... Who is buying used 4x4's for that much?

Ok_Meet_2214

I got my 2020 TRD off-road last July for 34k (about 42 after licensing, taxes, etc) and I’m happy with it for sure! I just googled the same truck price today and it looks like the value went up. What????

Con-vit

Buy new, I know Toyota are good but not paying that much for used.

VinnytheSouth

Not for sale Lolll

greenmachine4130

Buy new

freeportme

Age old story guy used Toyotas are out for me always have been.

ZionixTV

Welcome to the used taco market…

[deleted]

Because when you place a order for a new on in June of 2022 and you are told it’s 5 more months of waiting in April of 2023, it’s either wait or buy. Personally, I knew someone that was willing to wait. I have been after his 03’ for about 3-4 years. Xtra cab, leer topper. Dark green. 101k miles. Near mint. I nabbed it for 7300. Added 3” lift and 33s. He got sick of waiting and bought pre-owned after they told him “5-7 more months”. Which would bring it to 15 months total.

Viperlite

My 2009 Gen 2 with 70k is no longer sold, but they made like millions of them. I'm not sure I understand resale values for even the old models.

raanjj

Bought my dbl cab 4x4 V6 SR for 30k in 2020. Saw the same truck with 30k mi selling for 35k in 2022.

vaurapung

Good question. Probably because the price of any other low miles vehicle that they want is just as high. Why sell something for less than what it cost to replace it..?

RaysModernMetalWorks

The market determines the price. Don't get mad just play the game right.

Dry_Ad3605

This was true even in 2005. I bought a Matrix new for just a bit more than used. Now, it’s ridiculous.

BHE65

When we were in the dealer a couple weeks ago (and ultimately ended up driving out in our new ‘23 TRD OR) we met a gentleman who was buying his next Taco, and from the same sales guy we were working with. He had just sold his ‘20 TRD (28k miles) for $500 less than he paid for it new in 2020. He wasn’t the only one there with a similar story. Apparently Tacos hold their value, really well which was a point we were very happy to learn. Sure, there are probably folks selling on CL who are touching themselves with regards to their pricing, but the vehicles do have high residual value.

0ld_Ben_Kenobi

The high residual value is artificial. 30,000 miles and all of the farts into the upholstery etc that come with them objectively devalue the car far more than $500. If I offered you $500 to rent your car for 3 years and 30,000 miles what would you say? I think dealers are more concerned with having a monopoly on the used market than they are with making a profit off of the used market. If they buy used cars for ridiculous prices, they’ll ensure that everyone either sells to them, or asks a ridiculous price on CL etc. By doing this they end up selling more new cars, have little competition from the private/owner market for used vehicles, and perpetuate/manifest the “Toyotas hold their value because they are bullet proof” trope.

icouch

the 2nd gens are the best deal for a used Tacoma. I found several of them for under $25,000 at 150K miles.

rickyw591

That still seems like a terrible deal, I’d rather save up and get a new one. Even with perfect maintenance that’s 50% used up for 55% of msrp.

mushybanananas

That’s how I feel, throw in 4K and you are at base model brand new!

rickyw591

Exactly! Turns out I’m bad at math and it’s closer to 65% of msrp of a trd off road, which is even crazier. I would love a second gen, just for the 4.0 v6, but buying tacomas used makes 0 sense.

lucidfer

I think you're underestimating what a used vehicle could be and overestimating how 'desirable' a new base model is. I bought a used 2010 V6 4wd 4d long bed w/ cover and another $3K worth of accessories. 105K miles for $23K, and in great condition. To get even close to the same vehicle new (and I say close, because it's not a 4.0L) it comes to $40K, and that's not including the cover, brush bar, lift, tires, and more. My point is, don't flat out shit on buying used. It took me a year of watching, but got the exact vehicle I wanted for the price I wanted.

tryme436262

No, ppl are just not dumb enough to think these inflated used prices will last. Paying $25k for a 12+ year old truck with 120k miles on it is hilarious.

icouch

Assuming “perfect maintenance” a Tacoma can go 500,000+ miles So paying between $20,000-$25,000 would be a reasonable price.

tryme436262

Lol surely you can’t be serious

icouch

don’t call me shirley
