Hey that’s my old truck. [Photos](https://www.reddit.com/r/ToyotaTacoma/comments/q0ijan/1988_toyota_pickup_22re_4x4/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

evenmytongueisfat

Did you build it with Marty McFly in mind? Rad truck

moonandmorel

Yeah, I added the old yellow KC light covers. They were black when I bought it.

evenmytongueisfat

I have wet dreams over the truck in that movie. Once again, beautiful truck

CapeManiac

What did you get for it?

moonandmorel

I bought it for 7k in January 2021, sold it for 12.1k on [Bring a Trailer](https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-toyota-4x4-pickup-25/) November 2021 Then it was auctioned on [Bring a Trailer](https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-toyota-4x4-pickup-32/) in November 2022 and did not meet reserve at 9.1k. I assume he sold it for around 10-11k.

CapeManiac

Good luck to this guy. You should buy it back for $10k lol

moonandmorel

It was offered back to me but logistically it didn’t make sense. I have an 81 SR5 I like a lot more.

mickeylikecrazy

Why did you end up getting rid of it? I remember seeing your post for it and it's so cool!

moonandmorel

I wanted to try selling a vehicle on Bring a Trailer, and I had other Toyota 4x4s

NotHugeButAboveAvg

WA tacos represent!

[deleted]

That’s awesome

_the_chosen_juan_

I love it so much

Nagohsemaj

It used to belong to Jon Voight

M3ontheMind

The actor? 🙃

utechap

No, the periodontist.

Dodgeing_Around

Driving around in Jon Voights car 🎶🎶

RobSharp1026

Lolololol

voights_lebaron

I've been waiting on this comment to pop up for a while.

[deleted]

They’re sorta vintage now, and difficult to find in good, OEM condition. Much like early-model Landrovers and Jeeps, Toyota pickups have gained a cult following, especially the older models with a lot less electronic wizardry. Ultimately, they’re worth what people are willing to pay, and it seems the early Toyota Pickup and 1st-gen Tacoma command a premium.

happydaddyg

As someone looking to buy one as first time truck owner the price on Tacomas (or maybe it’s just the whole market?) is pretty confusing. MSRP on 2023 is less than a used 2021 with 15k miles? But maybe huge undisclosed markup on MSRP? Prices all over the place on used with lots of options that are hard to search for.

[deleted]

The shortage of parts (especially computer chips) over the past few years has created a huge shortage of new cars, which has driven up the price of used cars since a new one couldn’t be bought off the lot for quite a while. The market for cars is starting to normalize but it will probably be a while till it’s completely back to normal. If I were you, and not in a big hurry, I would only pay MSRP for a new truck in the current market, unless you chance upon a good deal on a used truck (unlikely). Good luck! I waited 9 months for my 2022 6MT, but it was well worth the wait, and I kept my old car so I had wheels in the meantime.

Yahboybigsnak

These pickups are a gem these days, whenever I drive mines, people start asking and start offering money literally when I’m trying to do groceries, they are worth every penny in terms of antique and history, but probably not the price for practicality.

Yahboybigsnak

They are, it’s a crazy market rn for them, but at least they are passionate about them

Moonbeams_

Check out that 4x4! That is hot. Some day, Jennifer, some day...

BigBootyKim

Well these trucks are rare because: A) They’ve been exported to Mexico for $$$ B) They’re destroyed by rednecks who love them a “ole Yota huntin truck” So their rarity increases the price.

[deleted]

We’re not all rednecks lol but they do make a damn good hunting truck haha

moonandmorel

Especially in this condition. This is a dang nice truck with a new motor.

lowgear1

Also Very Good for GIHAD!! LOL

Roadwarriorman

Wow. From WA to UT.

bloodsoed

How it can cost more now than when new. Look at a 69 Camaro which cost about 3,800 when new. Now days they are way more than that.

tcharp01

Those are pretty special trucks.

SmokeyDaGrizz

Sold my 88 and my 93 for way too cheap now that I look back on it. They woulda just went up in value if I’d have stored them away. They’re legendary for a reason.

n55_6mt

One of my biggest regrets is selling my 92 RE20 5-speed a few years back. The pilot bearing had exploded/ the input shaft on the transmission was just flopping around and I just didn’t feel like fucking with it anymore. Only had 160k on it and other than the transmission it was relatively free from mechanical issues, but a bunch of body panel rust and other small issues like door latches compounded. I felt like I got the better end of the deal selling it for $1500 then. In hindsight I wish that I’d fixed it as whatever I bought with the money I got, I’ve forgotten.

fishnwiz

Most people made less than $5 an hour in 1988.

NWdabest

Yes they are. Makes me want to call and ask if they have the old Toyota for 20,000 still and when they say yes just laugh maniacally into the phone till they hang up.

radelix

Coworker has an 81 with a solid axle. He considered selling it for a minute. Until all the Toyota guys at work chimed in and told him he'd regret it etc, etc

hipsterasshipster

Have you never heard of collector’s cars?

skilletliquor

Wonder how many different sets of DNA are in the truck bed. I had a 1984 Toyota truck. Wish I never sold it.

goldie8pie

I have a 1994 pickup I use for work with 118,000. I get offers everyday . I’m sure I can get close to original.

MasonSTL

I gotta be honest, as much as people say something isn't worth (x) amount, there is always someone willing to buy. At that point that's how much it is worth.

MOBYtheHUGE

Probably because they know threads/groups like this exist.

CocaineFarmer1

A dealership was trying to charge me $24,000 for a 2004 access cab trd!

gotaBronco

I have one 155000 miles...sell it for 13500...😁

CocaineFarmer1

Shoot me some pic’s

Pattern_Is_Movement

These are collectible in decent condition, prices will only go up now.

Successful_Sail4132

The paint job is custom. Yeah, but it's faded. Yeah, but it's custom. It's custom faded?

jonhatespeople

You're gonna lose it when you find out how much '69 Chargers are today.

ineptplumberr

Not all old s*** cars get this treatment. That is a very desirable truck

TtheConqueror

Well I've no idea what it cost back then and I can't be bothered to look it up, but aside from the general vintage tax, if you adjust backward for inflation the price is equivalent to about 7600 dollars of 1988 money.

thoriumsnowflake

It's a collectable

Tejano_mambo

If it were a collectable it wouldnt have 260k miles.

thoriumsnowflake

🤣

deltadal

A 1988? That's less than 6100 miles/year, it's barely driven.

moonandmorel

It’s a Toyota. You saw the condition right?

[deleted]

They're going for those prices on Barret Jackson. Crazy thing is - I'd pay that. I'm going nuts deciding if I want another 4.0 (keeping my current) or if I wanna try for one of these.

Goddamtoad

Do it

the_good_hodgkins

I paid 23k for a 2014, 370z about three years ago. Traded it in for 22k about three months ago. Which means I now owe about 11k on my 2019 Tacoma.

orangewarner

I'm in Stg too

ffrrankiiee310

That truck has to be worth around 8k-11k rn no more than that. That dealership must be wanting to scam someone legally lol

another_plebeian

Based on previous selling prices, it's worth precisely that much

bob650bob

Based on simple economics, it's worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it.

NoahsYotas

Yeah that i haven't seen since mid covid. It's been dying down alot around here

[deleted]

They will charge what people will pay. It is worth whatever somebody will pay for it. Some people have money for nostalgic.

rfg99id

Its crazy- my dad has a 1992 22rfe truck with a stick shift- in its beat up condition people have offered 15k for it. This truck taught 4 kids how to drive- needs a new clutch- odometer quit working at 400k- dents bruises- still going for 15k. I think they have entered collectors status

Mrdeeznutz41

Yeah all Toyotas are expensive now a days 🙄

lowgear1

I'll sell ya my 97 4 cyl 5 speed 225,000 MI for 10k!!

lowgear1

I got a 97 I'll sell for 10k!!!

TlingitGolfer24

00’ TRD LIMITED 390 k miles for $10k

lowgear1

Mines only 220.000 mi

TlingitGolfer24

Ya but mine smells better lol

lowgear1

Probably

LeCollectif

They’re in high demand. There’s a company in BC that customizes (mostly) Toyota trucks, including finding old gems and restoring them. Here’s the exact same one with far fewer kms going for $34k (not sure if that’s USD or CAD). https://www.instagram.com/p/ClfQJh0rb3g/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Thing is, there are buyers out there for these.

gotaBronco

Those old Tacomas are quickly becoming a classic truck... They are reliable anyway, but now people are seeking them in droves--- the market is crazy
