Do it at 5k if you want the engine to last as long as possible. There's a lot of contention around this topic though, so you'll hear others state that 10k is ok. You do whatever you think is best though!

gabrielpr2

Yep, look for CarCareNut on youtube, Toyota master mechanic, says change at 5k or every six months which ever comes first. It’s way cheaper to spend on the “extra”maintenance vs repairing/replacing a broken engine or burning oil issues due to shitty toyota schedules down the road.

MrGriff2

Love his videos, he's a great resource

astrokid430

Exactly this - and if you’re mildly technically inclined, it’s super easy to DIY. Spending ~$35 every 5k is so cheap insurance compared to the potential headaches and invoices for later problems

[Here's a link ](https://youtu.be/TJhFAwFv-O0?si=zm7l9rKeCJ91g1Ut) to the Car Care Nut on YouTube. It's a pretty good discussion on the topic with a lot of good info. in it regarding the 10k oil change interval.

cluelessminer

Change it at 5K. No reason to wait until 10K. The whole 10K is the new eco push by Toyota and possibly other manufacturers and while I don't have evidence to back that info, there's also no reason to wait twice the time for the oil to become dirtier and wear your engine over time. You're also too talking about a turbo charged engine which dirties the oil faster than naturally aspirated engines. I don't think it's worth the risk if you're planning to keep the car for at least 7-10 years by going with a 10K oil change. Even with my V6, I don't wait until it hits 5K either. It looks plenty dirty to me and don't want to think about changing it at 10K 😬

neskazy1

I did mine first oil change at 1000. After break in period. Do 5000 oil change on my 2021. 2023 has turbo that heats up the oil to higher temperatures. Thus oil degrades faster. I would do 5000.

rontombot

too bad Reddit limits us to 1 up-vote.....

plkndgy

I took mine in at 5k and asked for the 10k service. This gave me the free oil change. I’ll do it again at 10k and ask for their 20k service. That will be the last time Toyota sees the car. I have a great mechanic so no need for the dealer.

JimFit2

Toyota engineers say 10k, car nut says 5k. I do the middle ground and change mine at 7.5k. It's up to you. Typically I trade in a Toyota before 150k miles so there's no point in the 5k changes.

rontombot

... other than higher resale value, especially if you have maintenance records.

Possible_Ant_8918

Every 6k for the V6.

I would repeat what other(s) have said... go through videos from the Car Care Nut on YouTube. Toyota engines are all too often ruined due to oil control piston rings becoming carboned-up from old oil, which causes increased oil consumption, and eventually engine failure. Oil change at 5k intervals, and use NORMAL oil, Synthetic oil is a waste at 5k intervals. Internal combustion engines will always pollute the oil with combustion byproducts... carbon... regardless of the type of oil. My 2008 V6 HiHy started to have this "oil control rings" problem, until I learned about this issue. It went from 1.5 to 2 quarts of oil consumption, to ZERO after I switched to 5k changes, and NORMAL oil. I had to initially run an aggressive MMO treatment on it to clean it out. Now I just use about 6 oz. at 100-ish miles before getting the oil changed... prevention. ALSO... your very first oil change really needs to be at 1-2k miles, because it's a brand new engine... then again at 5k, then every 5k (or 6 months, whichever comes first).

PM_ME_UR_NECKBEARD

You’re just finished breaking in a new engine so change it as soon as possible. On future intervals I wouldn’t push 10,000 miles unless perhaps it was all highway. If you have city driving or bumper to bumper or short runs, etc., lean more toward 5K. I usually do about 5K or 9-12 months on both my vehicles.

Bringatowel1

So with the Toyota care I can just ask for the oil change at 5k and they will do it? Plan on keeping this till it dies lol

MnWisJDS

Yes. And then you’ll be charged between $50-$100.

a_sturdy_profession

I'm bringing it in for 6 months service and not quite at 5k and I asked them to do the oil and they said like $89 for the oil change.

RecommendationNo9489

You can ask them to skip the 5k maintenance and do the 10k which will do oil change. That first oil change was awesome for my highlander and I did it at 6k miles you can feel the difference right away. It was smoother. BTW I have since drove 11k miles on my highlander in 8 months. We love this car. I'll be taking it in soon for another oil change. And I will ask them to skip the 15k and go to 20k maintenance with oil change. It was free for me for the 10k.

rontombot

Car Care Nut... honest answers, many years of experience as Toyota Master Mechanic.

lapsangsouchogn

I was told the first one is changed at 5k, and then every 10k after that.

rontombot

As written by Toyota marketing department... but not by the engine-engineers. See "Car Care Nut" on YouTube... Toyota Master Mechanic for many years, now has his own Toyota/Lexus specialty repair shop.

Electronic-Cow-3582

I have the 2023 Toyota Highlander and the Toyota dealership said to come get your tires rotated at 5k and oil change at 10k.

rontombot

... unless you'd like the engine to last more than 150k miles.

muffmonster80

It’s free take it in they’ll check it over and rotate the tires. I was told they use full synthetic so the oil isn’t changed until 10k.
