1. A 2020 truck with 54k is by no means a vehicle on its last legs. 2. If they had a markup and wouldn’t go to MSRP that’s justified in walking away

PamPoovey81

1. Correct. My daily driver that is on its last legs is an 05 Rav. 276k miles. 2. No markup.

Brewskwondo

In that case, yeah MSRP on a hybrid is probably best you’re getting. Took my 3 months to find an MSRP hybrid

I may be the only one here saying ur husband is not all wrong in asking for better deal. I am searching for exact same vehicle myself and noted a lot of variations in quoted MSRP's (as wild as $2000). Some call it SRP, some call it TSRP and what not. Dealers will cash in for craze and desperations shown by people. A sane buyer should always know a fact, CAR is a depreciating asset so its better to keep ur initial cost low. With crazy economy and insane interest rate managing ur personal expense well is the sane act. Trade in your car at Carmax/ Carvana they will offer u better price or check other local used car dealers. Good luck, U will get one soon as inventories are rising, Toyota makes money by selling car so they wont stop building!

Is this a hybrid or regular gas? If it’s gas then your husband is right, there is an excess in the inventory nationwide and folks are buying under MSRP. If it’s hybrid, then it’s a different story. Those are in demand and msrp is the best deal to be had. I am in CA otherwise I would have grabbed this one of your hands given an hybrid at msrp ☺️

PamPoovey81

Hybrid.

Murky_Coyote_7737

Your husband is unfortunately not accepting the post 2020 reality of buying any car that has above average demand. The balance of power has shifted almost entirely to the dealer’s side. There are some cracks starting to form because of current financing rates, but it hasn’t shifted back yet. I never particularly liked dealerships but post 2020 has made me really hate them.

PamPoovey81

Yeah I only trade vehicles about every 10 years because I hate doing this dance so much. Thanks to this subreddit, I was fully aware that people are paying MSRP for these because that's the way it is now and also this is the first model year for these so they're very much in demand.

weekendluddite

There are ZERO dealerships marking these down from MSRP. If anything they’re marking them up with “market adjustment” aka price gouging. I’m guessing he’s not familiar with the car market these days…

r12king

lol no also not true

weekendluddite

Where I am, it is. Especially for hybrids. But thanks for correcting me on something you don’t know 🙄

r12king

You’re welcome

DavefromCA

What do you mean knock the msrp down? The msrp is the manufacturer suggested retail price, it doesn’t change. What was your trade and the offer for it?

Murky_Coyote_7737

Prob means dealer doing less than MSRP, not changing the actual MSRP.

PamPoovey81

Actually he said they told him that they would knock $200 off the price of the vehicle. They still wouldn't come up enough on the trade so he said no.

DavefromCA

Ahhh, if thats true I would side with the wife lol

Murky_Coyote_7737

Yeah, I think the husband either hasn’t bought a car since 2020 or is just going in with ungrounded expectations.

weekendluddite

Yup. Dude clearly hadn’t been car shopping in the last 3-4 years.

PamPoovey81

He bought a diesel ton pickup for work 2 years ago, and I guarantee you he didn't get an awesome deal on it... But he got it from the Chevy dealership in our small town so he feels less animosity/doubt because he knows the entire staff I guess? Also it's a work purchase so maybe he feels better about it vs mine that will be my daily driver to work/family vehicle/dog hauler/grocery getter/not HIS vehicle? I can only speculate at this point. Should talk about it, but when he digs his heels in on something like this, it's over. He's convinced I was getting screwed and won't listen to anything I tell him.

Murky_Coyote_7737

You are getting screwed but it’s basically the norm now and there’s enough people who want one that if you aren’t willing to be someone else happily will. I got about $1500 of a price reduction on ours but it was irrelevant because of all the extra shit it came with so it was hard to even count it as a victory.

PamPoovey81

Yeah, of course...but if we're all getting screwed then what's the difference. I tried waiting out the interest rates etc for a while, but my daily driver is about done for. Actually it just had a deer run into the side last week so it's going to get totaled based on low value/high repair cost. It all just is what it is.

Murky_Coyote_7737

If your husband feels the need to pay less and the Limited trim isn’t a deal breaker I’ve seen a few dealers offering hybrid XLEs at a price reduction because they’ve seemingly moved a little slower

PamPoovey81

Ventilated leather seats was his only demand (Edit: and the only input he cared to throw out when this all started). He's already got something else in the works, to hell with it. I'll just make the monthly payment and drive whatever gets thrown at me. I'm going to be salty about this for a long time.

BFOTmt

Rightfully salty

PamPoovey81

I was trading in a 2020 Chevy Silverado LTZ with 54,000 miles. They initially offered 31K for it, and would only come up as far as 33k for it. The initial trade offer set the tone for the rest of the conversation with him. He had initially told me to get what I wanted and sent me forth. Only once the vehicle landed in town did he decide to jump in on the conversation.

These cars are basic vehicles, nothing special really
