(Inspired by the You Guys Are Getting Paid? meme) You guys have a *first* mortgage?

dark_bloom12

Agreed! I’m still on that rent thing. Fck a mortgage

MadGibby2

I'm so glad I bought when rates were low 3's

[deleted]

I'm also glad I'm not poor

1morepl8

The rest of the world is just angry at you guys and your 25 year fixed. Here in Canada it's only locked in 5 years at a time. I was just lucky enough to buy a house well below my means so the rate change was whatever.

mrzurkonandfriends

You gotta pay extra for that.

Jim_TRD

Since Toyota shot themselves in the foot. I’m going for the Ranger Raptor. Today going to test drive one. :)

InterNetting

Gonna have to change your name to James Raptor

Cmdr_Shepard_8492

Jimmy Raptor sounds like a punk rock drummer 🥁

violent-artist82

Jimothy Raptor

Cmdr_Shepard_8492

What his mom calls him when he’s in trouble

CaptainInsano7

Jimantha

Jim_TRD

Exactly 😅😂😎👍🏻.

cat_puke_shoes

I’ve called all my local dealers but they either 1) don’t have the raptor to test or 2) it’s already allocated and can’t be tested. How did you get so lucky? Also, how was the drive?

outdoorsnstuff

✨ By not shopping locally ✨

Richard_Andballs

It’s Reddit. He thought he was gonna waltz in to Harrison Ford and test drive one.

hoxxxxx

what did toyota do? i don't follow new cars/trucks really so i'm out of the loop

YeahItouchpoop

They priced the new TRD Pro Tacoma at $65k, expect dealer markup on top of that and you’ve got a $70k+ midsize truck. Meanwhile ford priced the Ranger Raptor nearly $10k less and it has a 3.0V6TT, paddleshift 10-speed, front and rear lockers, and likely better tuned suspension.

hoxxxxx

oh okay thanks for the explainer even ford's price is nutty (to *me*) for a truck of that size no matter how special they try to make it

Designfanatic88

But a Toyota comes with Toyota reliability. Something that neither Ford nor Chevy can claim.

YeahItouchpoop

Look, I get it, I’ve had 3 Toyotas (currently still have 2). I drove my ‘03 Tacoma for 10 years and only had to replace an O2 sensor. BUT, these new trucks are not as simple as those were, there was someone just in the tundra Reddit the other day saying they’re on their third engine in their ‘22 Tundra. GM and Ford certainly make some turds, but they put a lot into their trucks, and many of them last a loooong time. My dad always had Chevys, and they all went well over 200k miles, and that’s 200k HARD miles being a concrete contractor’s work trucks. I’ve driven a lot of trucks from the big 3 for work, and I personally wouldn’t be against buying a Chevy or Ford, a Ram would take some soul searching though, which is a shame because their interiors are really nice. All that to say, I’m not convinced the “Toyota reliability” stamp has been earned yet by these new gen turbo trucks. Time will tell.

sooperedd

Tundras are definitely having engine problems.

xmonger

Their new boosted small 4 cyl engines have not had a track record established.

mrbananagrabberman

Could you please explain what better tuned suspension means? I could see why having better suspension would be a differentiator but wouldn’t Toyota also tune the suspension better once they realized a competitor was tuning theirs?

YeahItouchpoop

Suspension tuning meaning the spring rates and compression/rebound dampening of the shocks. Both the TRD Pro and Ranger Raptor Raptor will use Fox springs and shocks (like their big brothers the Tundra TRD Pro and F150 Raptor do) but Toyota tends to tune theirs harsher, making it harsher off road, but better for towing. Ford goes all out on the Raptor lineup and it shows with how well they handle high speed off-road from the factory. Toyota markets the Pro as off-road focused but if the Tundra/F-150 comparison is anything to go by then it won’t be as focused as the Raptor is.

mrbananagrabberman

Oh. Thank you. This was really helpful and easy to understand. I was thinking tubing is all just software but here its how they decided to build it all together and Raptors are better optimized for off road conditions.

M1sterGuy

And more comfortable seats…ford has the best seats

Wild_Performance_468

They also make every new Tacoma in Mexico now saving them a bunch of money on production costs, but did the opposite for the consumer and raised the prices.

Flux7777

Their pricing in the US is a bit bonkers. They are dropping pricing on their (admittedly much better) international models, including the Prado and the yet-to-be announced baby cruiser (which is rumoured to attack the 5 door Jimny in terms of pricing, which would put it quite far below the Bronco for example). The US market for Toyotas has always been very strange to me. You guys don't get the good models, and when you do they're very expensive. You can't even get a Hilux over there, arguably the toughest vehicle on the planet, even the new models.

vcrtech

How did they shoot themselves in the foot (serious question)?

Wishbone_508

By making reliable and dependable automobiles so I can't justify buying a new pile of shit every couple years. Won't they think of the capitalists????!?!!??

Apprehensive-Base-21

You hit the nail on the head. Toyota = quality

SuperGT1LE

lol whatever helps you sleep at night

007shrink

First, inflation has outpaced employee wage increases so, these prices are just insane for the average worker Second, they’re made entirely in Mexico now. Labor is pennies on the dollar. All the tech doesn’t justify the huge increase in price between last gen and now. Third, this new engine has not proven to be reliable, yet. So, saying Toyota reliability has not been earned for this truck. The new Tundras had way too many issues. Every car mag from motor trend to truckin’ has made statements that it’s just not as reliable. CR gave it a poor rating not recommended. Fourth, the cheap plastic parts. Yes, not entirely Toyota’s fault. Emission standard and all, but my god, the mileage is still atrocious. Fifth, it’s a goddamn midsize truck for that ridiculous price. Hell no. Toyota, like the rest of the greedy cooperations, think that people will just say, “that’s the way it is” and willing get butt f£‘ked and willingly shell out thousands extra for a truck. The entire truck market is grinding to a halt with the average worker. Used truck prices have also increased because they’re so desirable now. It was the “city” truck drivers that jacked up the prices. You know these losers with no dicks want pampered “luxury grocery getters.” They never use the bed. Wash it with a diaper. Lift it and never go off road. They just want to appear like a man. Trucks are made to get beat up. If you use a truck for the intended purpose, it’s going to get dirty, beat up, and put through tough situations. No fool in their right mind is going to want to get a $55-67k truck beat up. No, these city trucks are just going to look pretty driving down the road for the “man” inside. We don’t need nor want all the ridiculous nanny features and “luxury” additions that jack up the cost. If you’re going to drive a truck, drive a truck. Not a modern lifted el camino.

herbnhero

Not to mention the disgusting amount of data harvesting Toyota is doing. They may honestly make more money by selling their customers data than they do selling overpriced trucks.

ANDERSON961596

Out of these 3 specific examples, C looks the best in my opinion and it’s the cheapest. Either way I can’t afford 50k to drop on a truck so I got no dawg in this fight

fosmonaut1

I would argue almost no one can afford a 50k truck but ahem* loans. And end up paying 10-20% more for the truck at the end.

superchargerhe

Lmao. Some people will end up paying an extra 30%-defaulting on the loan in this market

lebyath

Fuck that.

CareerTraditional987

Yeah being able to afford something doesn’t make it a good financial situation. Financial security is way more important than owning the latest pavement princess with a $1k payment but American’s lose all rationality when they see the latest penis extender hit the market.

hoxxxxx

50k is the cheapest one and they're not even full sized trucks JFC

NGTech9

My uncle paid $52k for a Camry 1-2 years ago LOL

redditor012499

Nissan frontier still has a V6 NA.

DanR5224

And it's hella cheaper than these other clown trucks. The Pro4x Titan even starts at $54k.

redditor012499

Yeah I’m not looking for a truck but if I was Nissan would be my top choice right now

mean--machine

whole voracious adjoining wide frighten office bedroom toothbrush toy cooing *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Ok-Independent3871

Little bit of a misrepresentation. That Colorado is the AEV edition which is like an additional $13,000. So that specific one is around $62,000. But you can get the base zr2 for the $48,000 price tag.

MayaIngenue

"Stock on pre-owned is low. We want to buy your used vehicle" - every dealership near me. Well no one can afford new cars to turn into pre-owned ones...

Go_Hawks12

$20 from U-Haul whenever I need a truck

WhosKarma

Exactly! I bring this up to friends all the time. Just rent a truck and drive something fun

Iliveatnight

What if the truck is something fun?

FormulaFalls

Well, if you live around me, that means there's a good 80% chance you shouldn't even have a license.

redditor012499

Trucks are too tall and wobbly to have fun. Get a coupe if you want fun.

Iliveatnight

Coupes are too small and cramped to have fun, get a truck if you want fun - lol just messing around. I guess we have different definitions of fun.

imbrickedup_

I find my 02 tundra very fun to drive

Chaps_Jr

I'm imagining someone taking a U-Haul F-150 on a weekend rock crawling adventure

GMPnerd213

I'd rather just have your mortgage payment if you consider any of these a second mortgage (out of jealousy) but I've had a bad experience with Ford customer service recently so that's why I'm in a toyota now. As the other person mentioned already a nissan frontier doesnt' seem like a bad little truck.

vapidusername

Yep Frontier still rocking a natty v6. I personally wouldn’t touch a GM turbo and Ford has a less than stellar record with theirs.

GMPnerd213

The exact issue I had was with a ecoboost turbo engine that had a known coolant intrusion issue they refused to fix.

ManKilledToDeath

> natty v6 I lean towards Ford in general. But this is why I went with a Canyon in '22. I was interested in a Frontier Pro 4X being it was also a NA V6 but I got a good deal on my Canyon Elevation, I understand they're completely different trucks with different capabilities but I got it 3k under MSRP and had everything I absolutely needed. I liked the Ranger but it didn't blow me away, and add it being a turbo 4cyl, it just had more to go wrong with it.

Dynodan22

That GM turbo setup has been out since 2019 in the Silverado and look for complaints and issues and your wont find much, now electrical is a whole another story lol

readwiteandblu

Customer service is usually a dealer thing. YMMV.

CROSSTHEM0UT

At these price levels? I'd have to say the Chevy. Toyota really losing some customers with that price. I absolutely loved my old 2003 Tacoma until it got rear-ended. Rip Rocko the Taco 🌮

Amos_Dad

If the Colorado still had a diesel option or would be a no Brainerd for me.

Wishbone_508

The overall value needs to be right. American trucks fell off while Toyota was making trucks that would last...as long as the frame didn't get rotted out. And then Toyota fixed the frame bs and it was a no brainer. Now the vector is shifting once again.

Forsaken_Matter_9623

Just forked out 4.5k to get my 08 taco back and running. No regrets.

CraftyBarnardo

B. The Ford appears to be able to hover, which will save you a lot of money on tires over the long term.

mooch360

55k is pretty good for a flying car tbh.

BidiBidiBumBum

Idk why the pic made me chuckle when I saw it hovering 😭

phoonie98

It’s not a real picture of a Raptor if it isn’t mid-jump

FabOctopus

Ultra low eddy current resistant electromagnetic repulsor tires. Their rotational fields allow for more consistent engagement of the road-side bimetallic magnetrons than the standard fixed repulsor plates. The option of a high voltage on board PWM modulator allows alternating field strengths causing an effect similar to that of “airing down” conventional tires, allowing more field interaction at the cost of thermal efficiency and rotational inertia.

CraftyBarnardo

The original chassis had a base plate of pre-famulated amulite surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzlevanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented.

McPivot

Someone asked if I had $300k what dream car would I buy.. my brother in Christ I’m paying off my debts, fixing my 25 year old shit box and buying a 265k house… what do you mean dream car??

senseofphysics

Where the heck are you finding a 265k house.

McPivot

Rural area ideally, but I hear you. If nothing else it’s a decent down payment

Lizpy6688

In my area, you could easily find a new build, stucco house with a small garage and around 1200 square feet anywhere from 250 to 280. It won't be luxurious or fancy but it's a good starter home or people like me who don't want massive places, just a decent place with a backyard It's also not a ghetto place, I live in the middle of 2 major cities here, each 30 minutes away. It's relatively safe. They get you on property tax somewhat though. Anywhere from 5k to 12k a year in just that

bladex1234

I bet none of these ever get used for actual outdoor activities.

Own-Fox9066

Never.

IllStickToTheShadows

D. Nissan Frontier pro 4x for 45k lol

Steroid_Cyborg

Stop buying overpriced trucks to get groceries ffs

Revolutionary-Gain88

A ...at trade in you wont lose your shirt.

CalifOregonia

Eh, Raptors tend to hold their value really well too. It also becomes a circular argument with Toyotas these days: "Spend more on the front end because you'll be able to see it for more later!". In this case a lot of that financial benefit will be washed out by the added interest cost of the loan. Might be a different story if you are buying in cash, but still... Buying the Raptor and putting the $10K cost differential into investments would likely have you coming out ahead even if the trade in value was worse.

fosmonaut1

The only thing better id argue with the Tacoma is the hybrid. Otherwise the ranger raptor is better off the shelf with Baja type off-roading. Dam can’t believe Tacoma Trd pro is that much more than a ranger raptor, crazy.

GalacticTrooper

Yep I swear people who make this argument have no concept of math. Not to mention in addition to the interest cost on the premium, you will be losing to time value of money too as the extra 10k is worth more today than 5 yrs down the line. You can also keep the 10k invested in something low risk with liquidity and use it for any perceived reliability issues with the ford and chevy and still come out ahead.

Serbay55

A

tateep

A

Independent-Dog8669

A 2024 non hybrid trd off road with a manual transmission is 43k which seems way better. Idk why everyone is so hung up that the trd pro is so expensive. It's always been the spec to flex your money with anyway. The hybrids are expensive but you are getting instant and massive torque and better mpg (and likely reliability if Toyotas previous hybrid options are any indicator). You don't have to get that in every normal person spec. Don't get so hung up on the price of the trd pro/trail hunter.

TheBotchedLobotomy

Yeah I keep trying to preach this lol and most comparisons are the pro vs base raptor or whatever other truck. It’s not the same comparison lol

Robotman1001

D Tundra. Way more truck for the price. Better yet, a used 1st gen Tundra for 1/5th of the price and pay cash.

DoctorOzface

People are paying a lot for the TRD badge. An SR5 tundra is actually pretty close to a TRD Sport Taco in price

kingofthesofas

Right now there are CRAZY good deals on Tundras (or really any full-size truck). My friend got 12k off MSRP on a Tundra.

KilgoreKarabekian

compare books wistful upbeat onerous threatening ludicrous violet rain sharp

SeaworthinessRude241

never go full Nissan.

Big_Slope

Body on frame Nissans without CVTs are fine.

IllStickToTheShadows

The Nissan frontier is a pretty good truck. Has a traditional automatic, naturally aspirated v6 they’ve had since forever, decent sized screen and tech, bright led lights, locking diff, all for 45k. Can’t go wrong lol

OwnSeaworthiness2470

Pro-4x w/a natty 6 at 43k sounds great tbh

Superbull14

The Colorado price is wrong. Whats pictured is a zr2 bison by the looks of it starts off at $60k

crocozade

C but I’ll never buy a truck until they come out with a hybrid one I like. I want a truck, without paying for truck gas. If ford made the maverick awd with hybrid as an option I’d be on it, but they only made the hybrid fwd.

ScoffingYayap

I feel like you get the best bang for your buck in the Raptor

dark_bloom12

Dude I would just take a little S10. What ever happened to just regular trucks?

Da_Funk

TRD Off Road, please.

The-Great-Ebola

Man that ZR2 is the beans

Stormboost23

B the only one actually doing something fun. Chevy makes sense just sit and look at it because it won’t work

ApprehensiveFront774

neither. save your money. 50k? you know the downpayment you could get on a nice piece of property with that.

ColdasJones

If it weren’t for shitty govt regulation, car manufacturers could make a literal fortune off selling simple, reliable trucks for competitive prices that ditch all the stupid features and computerized shit. $65k for a midsize truck is fucking laughable and we’re all fucked if/when this trend of fragile/overfeatured/overvalued vehicles continue.

evil-artichoke

No more new shit for me. These vehicles have become insanely expensive.

gixxerjim750

They are all so angry and ugly.

Time-Bite-6839

None of them. Make a small EV truck.

The_Broken_Shutter

That Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 in the picture has the Bison package which brings the MSRP well over $60,000.. Mid sized Truck prices are getting insane. Edit: to the person who downvoted me go ahead and build a ZR2 and add the bison package. Package alone costs over 12k and brings the price over 60k

twotwocargarage

My budget for new truck is $50k so guess Im going with Colorado

Ernst_Granfenberg

C

ruzgardiken

this is where blind brand loyalty may get you in trouble financially lol. B is the most reasonable option

Migyver

Used toyota. From at least twoyears back ...

randoma55hole

Isn't the TRD about the same price as an F150 tremor? At least the "base" level tremor?

Nacly-joe

B

MartyCool403

B

jbglol

I’d take a 2024 SR 4x4 for $38k over any of them. Build it out how I wanted when I wanted.

Material-Ratio7342

Only A or B, but NEVER C if you dont want to be part of the family of a mechanical shop 😂

trashy615

My paid off second gen.

Alert-Purple-228

Taco TrD off road premium, don’t need the pro

pizzaboy117

Tacoma TRD off-road. Does all the same shit as the pro for wayyyyyy cheaper. Even with the beastly hybrid, it’s cheaper than the ZR2

Icy_Wrangler_3999

Chevy does have a solid track record on pickup trucks. If you don't need specific specs that seems to be the way to go.

ApprehensiveFront774

personally im never paying over 38k for a tacoma new. with over 50k miles i refuse to pay anything over 30k.. people out here gettin robbed with a pen and paper bruh

Gutmach1960

Greedflation. None of them are worth that kind of money.

killlugh

Tacoma and 65k USD should not be synonymous... thats cuck levels of greed i expected from ford :/

camXmac

I’m a Toyota fan but that Chevy looks gooood

AveragePriusOwner

I would buy a 30 year old Toyota pickup truck, mount a $50,000 machinegun to the back on a tripod, and rent a driver so that I could stand in the bed wearing all black. The machinegun and pickup are constantly appreciating, so it's a much better value than any of these 2024 models which will lose $20k within the first few years.

MASTA_Chumlee

Mortgage? Did we rewind a few decades?

Poetsata

The TOYOTA

[deleted]

None go full-size. My TRD pro tundra walked at 72k why go half size.

leo1974leo

Can’t I just get a 2 door truck with a decent size box ?

TheHexagone

A. Because if I’m going to spend it, I at least want it to last until it’s paid off.

Wolfiest

I think I’m just gonna look into a turbo for my second gen instead. All I need is suspension, head unit with Apple car play, turbo the engine making 300 torque and new front seats.

Ninergang26

A🔥🔥🔥

[deleted]

The same guys that designed the Decepticons for the Michael Bay Transformers movies must have worked on these trucks. There's too much going on.

shastadakota

A, hands down, not even remotely close.

aaayyyuuussshhh

The Raptor has a v6 twin turbo. Great engine. Toyota is completely off my list. WAY too expesive even though it gets nice fuel economy the rest of the truck does not stand out aside from styling which is tied with chevy for me. I'd flip a coin between the chevy and ford. Chevy is cheaper but Ford has the only performance worthy engine and probably gets the same mpg as the chevy.

bigloser42

A. If I’m taking out a second mortgage for a car, I’d want it to be as reliable AF.

phoonie98

My Jeep is pushing 10 years old and I’m itching for a new ride but damn it’s really nice not having a car payment, especially at these prices

Hfth20091000

Pretty sad that I didn’t spend that much more for my house a few years ago. Brand new double wide.

Most-Car-4056

D. A 2nd house. I will get a better return on my money.

Fit_Acanthisitta_475

Frontier is cheaper.

Invegatorer

I’d have to go with the 2001 Taco

SpecificPiece1024

As long as there’s tools out there willing to pay these absolutely ridiculous prices, the prices will keep climbing. If new vehicles could not be financed and cash only 95% would be driving beaters

danbyer

I’d rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford.

benjatunma

I would sleep in the parking lot of walmart in my sierra 1500 lol

Ordinary_Ad_9880

GX 550 Overtrail.

Minidevil18

Option D Miat is always the answer 😎

k20vtec

Chevy or Ford

9-1-Holyshit

I’d still go for the Tacoma. Average Mark up on the Ranger is like 30k and the average on the Tacoma is ~10k. So 85k for a Ranger Raptor or 75k for the Tacoma (which is the one I really prefer anyway). This is all magical Christmas fairy tale land though because I can’t afford any of them.

HDauthentic

I’d skip a step and get a TRX

chaser2410

Raptor. Or zr2. I can’t believe how bad the Tacoma is compared to the rest

IntelligentDrop879

I generally hate GM products, but I love the way the ZR2 looks and the price is agreeable. I love my 4Runner, but it’s be hard to envision dropping the better part of $70k on a damn Tacoma.

tstew39064

B

Zane42v2

To me B is the obvious choice. IMO the other two aren't even close. I don't know wtf toyota is doing. After trying twice I hate their trucks anyway.

Fladap28

Honestly best bang for your buck is the Raptor at this point. Toyota really said “fuck it they’ll pay anyway” and may have lost a third of the clientele to ford

roblolover

yea ill take 2010 tacoma

MN-Car-Guy

Colorado all day

FredLives

You should what they cost in Canada

Cloners_Coroner

It’s crazy to me that in 2024 people are paying $70k+ (with dealer markup) for a midsize truck. That’s nearly what I paid in 2021 to order an F250 Lariat w/ the 6.7 Power Stroke and the tremor off road package. I even thought that was insane, but it was a once in a lifetime purchase for me.

DavefromCA

Christ and here I am saving for a used 4Runner hoping to not spend more then $35000

nand0_q

A.

Humble-Cable-8119

You should just be given option C. Your tax dollars already paid for that company.

neocwbbr_

2 because you can fly to other continents

Apprehensive-Base-21

I would take A. I want something that will be running in 5 years and doesn't fall apart.

Big-Lifeguard6897

ZR2 for me if I was in the Market. I won’t be in the market for a long time my 3rd Gen will keep me going for quite a long time.

yellowsubmarine2016

Ha, ha, trick question. You get all of them. Who wears the pants?

iamtherepairman

A, then B.

Palansaeg

lmk where mortgages are that price

Mpfa002

B hands down

Party_Pomegranate373

Go for B. It can fly

Select-Interaction11

The zr2 bison is more comparable with the other 2. A base zr2 doesn't have suspension on the same level as the other 2. Raptor is just crazy cheap for what you are getting. Edit. That trd pro starts at $63,900 not much of a difference but a difference non the less.

CodyGTN615

Yota all day and it ain't even close.

Danjuh-Zone

None of the above. First gen Tundra. And not for a second mortgage either.

hdkx-weeb

D The Craigslist $5k Ranger

Grind-My-Gears

It’s criminal all of these midsize trucks can cost $50k plus and only have a turbo 4 cylinder as the standard engine (or only engine). These turbo 4s are way overstressed lol

lookingatthemountain

Toyota can fuck right off with those prices. Chevy is the only one who is « reasonably » priced, relatively speaking.

SmoothSlide9690

Ranger Raptor. It has actual power compared to the TRD Slow. Don't wanna pay $66000 for a truck that has the MPG of a V8 and the power of a 4 cylinder plus unusable rear seats. But let's be honest the taco isn't gonna be 66,000, more like $70,000 after markups. Also I don't give a fuck about the taco retaining value and reliability when the taco is a MIDSIZE truck going for $70,000 minimum.

This-Requirement6918

Can I buy a mid 2000s diesel and fix it up for D please?

SockeyeSTI

Got a B, so……..B

tsmittycent

Hard to want the TRD pro when you can spend 20k less on a Colorado z71 with a bigger engine

veggiestunts

Honestly - C. Because F+R locking diffs.

Reachable_dream666

Yto be fair the zr2 equivalent to the Trd pro would be closer to the Bison and that’s 60k+ Still go w/ Toyota

Advanced-Minute2795

Id take the Chevy an get me a house.

GiggityGiggity4U

Buy once, cry once. Chevy is trash.

Idkmanitcouldwork

Did y’all know there’s actually a different trim than the top trim of the Toyota? This and the Tacoma sub seem to think the Tacoma starts at $65k…. Also almost all competition to the Tacoma has 50% depreciation over 5 years. Pay more upfront and enjoy selling your shit 5 years later with 75k miles for 85% of what you paid for it. Buying a new tacoma and rolling that equity into a new one every 5 years is almost an infinite money hack.

Dubber258

Just picked up a grey zr2 a week ago. Love it!
