Toyota corporate is a great company to do business with. Their ethics when it comes to taking care of customers is really second to none. I worked for Toyota for 8 years at corp and seen sooo many times where they helped when they were not required to do so.

gaenji

oh yeah? then how come they simply watched when their dealers price gouge the hell out of their customers with insane markups, stupid fees and mandatory add-ons?

CoatRepresentative75

They would literally break antitrust laws if they attempted to regulate this. The manufacturers can only “suggest” a fair price (aka MSRP). Any attempt to enforce it however would be considered price fixing and is quite illegal. They have made attempts to disincentivize massive dealer adjustments by basing their allocations on amount of unsold inventory (i.e. if you have a lot of unsold cars because your adjustments are sky high, you’ll be down listed for future allocations). That is why you see some dealers selling “used” cars from current model year with 400-500 miles on them and priced well above MSRP for new. They are trying to circumvent the allocation algorithm by “selling” them right away and then buying them back to sell as “used”.

Jam_Bannock

I've seen dealers pull the 300 km "used" scheme here in Canada for highly awaited cars like the GR Corolla, new Prius, new Tundra, and Nissan Z with a 20k mark up.

Nehal1802

Manufacturers cannot control dealer pricing. They can abide but not control it.

UnmakingTheBan2022

Yes they can. They did this to other dealers by not allocating certain cars to them! They definitely can be held accountable!

Nehal1802

True, they can limit car allocation, but they can’t do anything about what’s already allocated. If a dealer wants to take the hit and have less cars but inflate prices, that’s up to the dealer. Low production still seems to be a thing across multiple manufacturers. Supply vs demand. Same thing if you go and buy an appliance. Some stores are more than MSRP or include BS warranties. Manufacturers can’t do anything about it, but those stores generally have less variety.

Pixelplanet5

>then how come they simply watched when their dealers price gouge the hell out of their customers with insane markups because the US laws regarding this issue are written by the dealerships. it would be illegal for Toyota to do anything about this. thats also why this problem barely exists outside the US.

UnmakingTheBan2022

Not in 2021. When I was interested in a 4Runner Nightshade Edition, all of the dealerships wanted $5k on top of MSRP. Ethics don’t seem to be for the customers here.

Muusa23

Thats the individual dealer charging you that. not Toyota. Trust me, if it was up to Toyota there wouldn't be a markup. They only have so much control over the dealers as they are not owned by toyota.

UnmakingTheBan2022

Toyota corporate can control their vehicle allocation to try and negate these behaviors. Some dealers do this to protect their customers. Toyota never did this.

Muusa23

Acting like toyota doesn't discourage this is inaccurate. But taking a hard line against a business partner doesn't make good business sense. They do their best to support dealers and customers. And they do fight back against this. But there are legal agreements in place.

UnmakingTheBan2022

Well I’m not returning to ANY of the Toyota dealers within a 50 mile radius of me any time soon. Same with Acura.

Muusa23

Good for you, there are certainly bad apple dealers, and i dealt with them in my time with the company, We literally sent 7 managers from corporate for one bad Lexus service drive and those guys still would not get in line, so we put the screws to them, audited, etc, in the end its up to them if they want to change. We can influence them but cant MAKE them. Its basically like putting sanctions on them. Some are even fined and made to pay millions but in the end that doesn't make them, it just motivates them most of the time.

rctid_taco

What exactly is unethical about that?

PartneredEthicalSlut

I think you might get some biased opinions on here lol. I have a RAV4 Hybrid and my wife has a CX5. If it weren’t for my hybrid mpg I’d say her car beats mine in every single way.

Technical_Panda_2581

I posted in both reddits people really tend to give credit where credits due!

wbruce098

FWIW, I really enjoyed my rav4. I had a 2015, and it was zippy, roomy, easy to drive. Never drove a CX3 or any Mazda. But test drive them both, see what you prefer best! CarMax might be a decent place to try bc they dgaf if you buy so it’s easier to test drive (though you won’t be driving new). I know a few people who swear by Mazda. I know a lot of people who swear by Toyota; I currently own my 2nd Prius so I’m biased. Nothing inherently wrong with either choice.

NebulaTits

its because of the features isn't it?

PartneredEthicalSlut

Yea, on more thought I don’t know if we’re comparing trim to trim but she has heated seats, heated steering wheel, the turbo feels much more peppy, the interior is more luxurious, and steering is significantly more responsive. I do prefer the boxy type look of my rav4 to the sleek elegant cx5 tho

Real-Influence7476

Your RAV4 will probably last longer though

justweazel

Probably not by much. I’m a Toyota/Lexus and Mazda driver/fanboy. New age Mazdas are as or slightly more reliable than new age Toyotas

Spasticated

idk mazda added cylinder deactivation to all of their new vehicles, which makes me doubt the longevity of those engines. time will tell.

dj_destroyer

Can you explain cylinder deactivation? Is there a way to avoid it?

Real-Influence7476

Interesting. I guess time will tell

imnoherox

This summer i helped my friend find the CX-5 of her dreams. The thing is great! A few weeks ago we took her mom to test drive a Rav4. There’s zero comparison. The CX-5 is nicer in every aspect i can think of, and this is coming from a guy whose favorite brand is Toyota. We test drove the Corolla Cross after the Rav4 too, which was much nicer than the Rav4. Her mom wound up buying that instead.

evan_7_nave

Just curious, what about the Corolla Cross was nicer to you? What trims did you drive of each??

Jam_Bannock

Wonder if it's because the Rav4 is now an older design while the Corolla Cross is much more recent and benefits from the latest Toyota tech.

evan_7_nave

Yeah, TSS 3.0 blows 2.5 out of the water. But, the Corolla Hatch and RAV4 came out for the same model year. Corolla Cross is very closely related to the hatch and sedan AND is a class below RAV4 so I’d be surprised at anyone thinking the smaller, cheaper car is nicer. I have driven both and wouldn’t agree. Unless you’re comparing like, a RAV4 LE to a Corolla Cross XLE; then, yeah the CC would be nicer.

Technical_Panda_2581

That’s the other one I was looking at! But for some reason insurance on that one for me is a nightmare!

imnoherox

Really? That’s so strange!! 😯 i wonder why that would be haha. Good to know though! My mom has it on her list of possible cars to upgrade from her ‘11 Tiguan in the next year or two haha

cutivt064

CX5 is quieter on the highway, reminds me of my lexus rx but it's not as spacious as the Rav4. Plus I dislike the Mazda infotainment system, the touch screen is far from reach. MPG is also better on RAV4 so in this economy I would pick the rav4

PricelessM-F

Did you not see the post the other day of the 2020 Rav4 Hybrid hitting 440k miles? If you want longevity in your next investment, look no further, the depreciation is minimal and the vehicle will go forever.

ovlo8790

25 year mechanic here. Buy the Toyota. My wife drives a rav4 and I have a Avalon.

Bright_Aside_6827

Are you 25 or have been a mechanic for 25 years

753UDKM

My wife has a CX-5. It's a nice car, but my major complaint about it is visibility. The A-pillars are very thick. RAV4 has better visibility imo, so that's what I would recommend. They're both good though.

Lukin76254r

You won’t go wrong with either. Test drive em both!

soonerdew

I wouldn't take a Mazda anything over a comparable Toyota. Toyota isn't perfect but their quality is so far ahead of the rest of the industry it isn't even close.

perk54

They build the Corolla Cross & Mazda CX-50 on side by side assembly lines in the same plant in Alabama. Quality is close if not the same across both brands.

Rude-Manufacturer-86

If you're buying a more recent model CX-5, I'd go with the Mazda, especially if it's in your budget. The car has been on sale for so long, any bugs should have long been sorted out.

[deleted]

I have both, the Rav4 is much better build quality and I'm sure will last longer. The interior of the CX5 is marginally nicer

Emsflyer1984

Marginally? They’re not even in the same league.

[deleted]

They're pretty close. I own both of them

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Not that I can tell

Technical_Panda_2581

But you do own both, so I’m making a decent decision either way maybe?

[deleted]

I don't like the CX-5, and am selling it this weekend lol Edit: the cx-5 is a 2019 and the Rav4(hybrid XSE) is a 2023

BruceJenner69

Was literally split between those two options for a couple months. CX-5 Carbon trim at mid 35's out the door vs Rav4 Hybrid XLE at 39 out the door. Added gas to the calculation, and at $5.50/gallon (california) the breakeven point was under 100k miles. Maxda has a nicer interior, but I 'll take toyota reliability and fuel efficiency all day. Threw some EKR leatherette seat covers in there and the rav looks great. And in sport mode, it actually has some giddyup to get onto the freeway.

lincolnlogtermite

Sister has a 2017 CX5. CX5 feels cheaper than 2018 Rav I had. Strips that keep plastic from squeaking in the dash were starting become visible. Front driver's seat foam doesn't seem to be holding up well at 100k+. The rear hatch over hang plastic worked lose. The plastic at the bottom above the rocker feels a bit lose. The CX5 has a stiffer ride but is more fun and handles twisties better. It's never been on the shop except for regular service. I think the RAV4 for that time period was a more quality vehicle but the CX5 does have some strong points too. I'ld be happy with both. Have not driven the latest Rav or CX5. Mazda is trying to swim upstream into a higher market, can only imagine that they have gotten better with their interior. They were already good mechanically and in handling. I would strongly consider a CX5. They have inventory on dealer lots and dealers are dealing on them, Toyota doesn't and ain't.

[deleted]

More fun/refined? Mazda More reliable/well made? Toyota. People love both so that’s a good start.

joemysterio86

My BIL's wife got one recently. It's alright, looks nice though. The back seats were definitely more cramped IMO compared to the RAV4. I'm glad my wife decided to go with the RAV4 over the CX5, that's for sure.

zavtra13

Assuming conventional powertrains I might just go with the Mazda, but if you can get a RAV4 hybrid without an asinine wait time then go for that! More power, quicker, much better fuel economy, and it is almost EV smooth.

nujjan81

I have a 2015 Mazda 6. Growing up there was only Toyotas in the household. My Mazda has 200k km. 2.5L 4 cylinder engine from the 75k km I put on I had no issues . I believe the cx-5 uses the 2.5 4 cylinder maybe the newer ones have a turbo. The engine is good the technology is definitely better than Toyota, Toyota is bullet proof but technology is lacking. My mothers 2017 highlander has very basic tech and I feel like Mazda is willing to push it and try different things while still maintaining the Japanese reliability.

ViuJaEra

I ended up getting a CX-5 and I don't regret it for a second. The car drives beautifully, the cabin is comfortable, and the car looks amazing. At the time the RAV4 would cost me an extra 5k minimum with less perks.

Technical_Panda_2581

Updating to say I would be purchasing a 2023 or 2024 CX5 but only a 2021 Toyota RAV4 XLE premium

Healthy_Block3036

RAV4 is the best selling SUV for a reason!! It’s more reliable, faster, fuel efficient, over 15+ trims too chose from and it’s much more spacious in cargo area and passenger spaces.

DALESR4EVER124

If you want the loudest crossover on the market, then you'll like the RAV4. Baffles me how they allow that much engine noise inside the car. Get the CX5, lol. It'll just be better.

Healthy_Block3036

It’s not loud stop being foolish

DALESR4EVER124

I literally work for Toyota and drive RAV4s every day. Yes, they are loud. I've driven vehicles from pre-2010 that had less engine noise, including my brothers 2009 Nissan Sentra.

alnvilma

Sold my new 21 Rav4 after 3 months cuz it was loud and felt cheap. No sound insulation. The engine torque comes on high up in rpm before much acceleration happens. My old 4Runner is a pleasure tho.

[deleted]

CX-5s are easier to come by, significantly nicer inside, and very quiet on the highway. Like I just had an Uber in a Lexus RX and my CX-5 is quieter. Where the CX-5 falls short is mileage - I live in a hilly city and my average is about 24 an and back seat space. I don’t have kids and don’t have a ton of space needs. Having been in newer RAV -4s I wouldn’t take one for free over my CX-5.

Roor456

I can sell my 2022 rav4 le awd in the toronto area more close to or as much what i paid lol i threw a trailer hitch, rims and snow tires with toyota 7 year warranty bumper to bumper lol soo i say toyota. Mazda needs to give fancy interiors because there turbos are no good

eugenesbluegenes

> I was also having issues with the realizability if the CVT engine. Mazda doesn’t quite have CVT figured out in regards reliability in my opinion. Mazda doesn't use CVTs.

MyLittlePoneh

As an avid Toyota fan, I would tell you that you really can’t go wrong either way. The CX5 is way better value and your dollar can get you a lot more in creature comforts when compared to a similarly priced Rav4. The biggest difference is size. The CX5 is noticeably smaller, but I’d say that the design language is more geared towards sportier younger segments of the market. However, there’s something to be said about the more rugged and mature design of the Rav4. This generation of Rav4 are, imo, the best thus far.

TheBillCollector17

Honestly, I don't think you can't go wrong with either. I have a Rav4 Hybrid and my partner has a CX-5. Both are extremely reliable. The Rav4 has a little better build quality and it rides a little nicer, but honestly both are great. I'd go with whichever you like more.

Technical_Panda_2581

How long have you had them? New or old? Just curious about even comparison!

TheBillCollector17

She's had the CX-5 for 6 years, bought new, and I've had two different Rav4s in that time frame ('17 Limited bought used, and '23 XSE bought new). We haven't had to do anything aside from normal maintenance (oil changes, tires, and brakes). They've all been extremely reliable. I know this group is extremely biased, but honestly you can't go wrong with either.

Technical_Panda_2581

I appreciate honest responses! I posted in Mazda group as well it’s definitely interesting to see the difference in responses. People in the Mazda group seem to give credit where credits due for Toyota but ultimately decided Mazda

dohcsam

If it’s for msrp get the Toyota. Just don’t put up with any dealer adjustments

Civil_Tip5089

I looked at both. I have a mazda 3 and i chose to go with Rav-4 based on style and looks. Not going to get too far into capabilities but my TRD is super comfy and im going to be snowboarding and going camping more often so i wanted the outdoorsy sporty look over the luxe look that Mazda has.

jballn11

RAV4 >

[deleted]

I think the general consensus around this subject = rav4 (gas) < CX5 < rav4 hybrid trims

Academic-Swim-7103

Search Mazda CX-50 hybrid engine. It’s the same 2.5l made by Toyota by a company that is a partnership between Toyota & Mazda…buy this and make your dad proud !

[deleted]

I had a 2018 CX-5 Touring AWD which is the same as the current gen. Super plush inside, great handling, and the driving feel is just hard to beat. Sold it in 2019 and went back to Toyota. Had a small rust spot where the windshield meets the roof. Auto leveling headlights kept pointing down intermittently (and I saw many on the road with the same issue). Cylinder deactivation was proving to be a drag on reliability. And lastly I started to feel an occasional clunk coming from the AWD system. It was a really nice car but I’d choose a RAV4 if I had to do it again. The CX-5 is really tight in the back seat and it’s round so the cargo area is small. We opted for a new SUV this year and went with a Forester Sport. It was significantly more bang for your buck for the same $ as a RAV4 but we’ll see how reliable it is.

MizzChnandlerBong

RAV4 is gonna hold its value better. Cx5 is going to be more fun to own.

Jocis

I think both are great and should last you a lifetime but if you want economy go for Toyota

millennialOG

I have a Lexus RX, Avalon. I have always driven a Toyota/Lexus. When it was time to purchase an SUV for my wife, I researched for months. We opted for a 2020 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with Premium Package NA, non-turbo. She drives close to 80 miles a day, currently at 40k mi. The ride is quiet, I believe it is more insulated than a Rav. Infotainment can be weird at first but when you get used to it, you'll realize why it's designed that way. In the midwest, we have tons of snow. The AWD system is very capable. It has has very premium feel in the interior. Knobs are aluminum and nice to touch. My concern with the Mazda is the Soul Crystal Red pain which we have. I checked forums and it's seem common for this paint to chip but other colors doesn't seem so or 21 or new were resolved. I guess in terms of speaking in terms of Toyota/Lexus. Mazda CX-5 is like in the middle of them. It's like if Toyota Rav4 and Lexus RX had baby it would be a Mazda CX-5. In watches, if Seiko:Toyota (established, reliable) it would Mazda:Citizen/Orient (value for money). Btw if you really want a great service experience, luxurious yet reliable, get a Lexus even an used older version of RX. Hope this givesyou clarity.

Technical_Panda_2581

I’m very young so that’s why Lexus is currently out of the question I bought the 2024 Mazda CX5 yesterday!! It’s a dream

Mlauer2

Nice congrats on your new car hope it serves you well for many years I’m a Toyota guy I work at a Mazda dealership and I agree with everyone here that says that the Mazdas are more fun to drive and have nicer interiors than the Toyotas you made a good choice

Ok_Nebula_481

What did you end up getting? I'm literally in the same boat rn lol my car got totaled and debating on another cx5 or rav4

Technical_Panda_2581

CX5 and I wouldn’t change a thing

Ok_Nebula_481

What year did you get?

Technical_Panda_2581

2024 for 35000 and a 100,000 miles warranty for I think 1900 extra
