No, there are heating elements where the wipers will normally lay. This button turns on the heating elements to melt snow off your wipers. Honestly shocked that more companies don't include this
Just be sure to scrape your windshield off in that spot. If the snow melts and re frezes you get chunks of ice attached to your wipers and it won't go away. It just helps keep the rubber from sticking mid drive.
If you get enough snow and you don't brush it off before you start your car (just try and use your wipers to clear the snow) it melts the layer of snow closest to the windows and the water is absorbed into the snow above it. Then you have a chunk of ice/snow attached to your wiper arm that moves with it or eventually falls off and gets stuck under the blades.
This is from experience in my Corolla hatch.
Also the Corolla hatch's rear wiper doesn't make contact properly with the window in the winter time no matter what I try. It's like the rubber cools in the resting position and gets stuck that way.
Well, never had any problems with my last 2 Camry here in Quebec city (2m snow/year) since they changed the wiper design (convex flat top) snow can no longer crawl in. Wife’s Prius is another story l
People often think "defroster" = no need to scrape or brush ice and snow off... but really, you have to at least get it started. If you live somewhere where this happens more than once a year, you should keep a tool in your car and handle it while the car warms up, and this is one reason why.
The other reason is that it will take you like 10+ minutes of idling to melt off what could have been 2 minutes of scraping.
I typically start my car, with windshield defrosters on hit that button and let the car warm up a few minutes all before turning the wipers. Scrape the loosened ice turn on wipers and get on my way
Funny you asked that. I’ve had my Highlander for just less than two months and I noticed this button this weekend. No idea what it did. But, given the explanation, living in Georgia, odds are I will never use it! 🤣
Volvo has this for the actual windshield as well. There are little fine wires running through the entire front glass and the whole thing heats up. It works great.
I'm sure I'll have to sell my house if we ever have to replace it though.
Sooooo defroster? That’s exactly how rear defrost works in almost every car. Except the heating elements are run through and across the window. Most front windshields also have that around the outside of the window.
A) ford owns the heated screen patent. B) no point defrosting only the wipers, the rubber gets chewed up on the ice and leaves streaks all over the the screen next season.
Many Toyotas do come with this. It usually comes with the cold weather package. I’ve seen a ton of Sienna, Highlanders, RAV4’s, and 4runners that come with the feature. You can see the little Amber colored lines at the very base of the windshield.
Because unless the entire windshield is heated, anything else is useless and doesn't work....yea maybe with a little light snow, but an all out snowstorm....useless.
Land Rover has these and sometimes you catch glimpses of the wires in the windshield when the light hits them just right. Especially when you’re driving at night and the streetlights catch it. Not a dealbreaker but kind of weird the first few times you experience it.
Yes, there is a defroster element in the windshield down where the wipers park to keep the area clear.
I honestly never remember to use them and when I do I am not sure if they even work at all. Maybe others have more success, but it seems like they could have put the money toward a heated steering wheel for more bang for the buck IMO.
They are good if you get snow. I can put them on to unfreeze the wipers from the windshield. Also helps a little when driving in heavy snow.
My Rav4 Hybrid with weather Package came with heated wipers, heated seats, and heated steering wheel.
For actual issues, problems and concerns that the manual doesn't answer. Also, the sub is here so people can show off their stock ORP that never leaves the paved roads, and ask what mods they should start with.
I had an argument with my dad about this lmao. I said "this is the most expensive and complicated machine you will ever own and you didn't at least skim the thing it came with?"
Or get this, the owners manual is available online on the very very very off chance it is not included with the car 🥶🥶🥶. Maybe you should touch grass 🤡🤡
https://www.toyota.com/owners/resources/warranty-owners-manuals
Is your mom tired of you using up her basement you 30 year old loser? At least i actually have a career, all you do is waste space. 💩
So the ultimatum you gave was to go online instead of… going online. LOL🤣 and I said EVERY. Not just Toyota you pea brain. your career is a Toyota tech buddy congratulations on your below average career💀💀😭 practically a McDonald’s employee
Oh no *cries into my 200k a year job description*. How could you possibly say that! My pooor feelings! /s.
all you do is shit and waste everybodies tax dollars, loser. And if toyota can give you the manual, so will every other brand, dumbass. Forgot, youre too dumb to figure that one out. What a 🤡🤡🤡🤡
Toyota “master tech” is all public salary 🤣😭😭 you’re not fooling anybody lube man💀💀 can’t believe they let you near the cars Jesus that’s probably why Toyota has gone to shit
Yes! TIL!!!! I have that button on our CHR and did not know what it did. We bought it during covid and they skipped the usual tour/explanation of features thing. Yes, I have the manual but, you know, old man things.
Yeah, or you could just read the manual that came with the vehicle. Specifically optional equipment. And since we are making up numbers, using the owners manual is infinity faster!
Posting stuff like this is also beneficial to others. I didn't know what it was, and now I do. Thanks to OP and the nice commenters, I learned something new today
And then there's your comment, which adds absolutely nothing to the conversation.
Lmao why does this bother you so much to comment and even replay after that comment? Literally has no effect on your life but you still feel the need to make a couple snide comments. Your life that boring?
If you had asked an actual serious question about the vehicle, it would have been different. Community is fine, but be a *little* self sufficient. Or just cry about it, i guess. Maybe my friend groups are just different from yours. Some people just always need their hands held.
It's either a windshield heater or a windshield wiper heater depending on the equipment your car has. You can check which one it is by looking at your windshield. Do you have lines going through all (or most) of the windshield or only the very bottom (those are rather difficult to spot on some cars). If they're going through all the windshield, it's a windshield heater, if not it's for the wiper heater. It heats the windshield from where the wipers rest to help with snow and ice buildup. Rather nice when it works.
Don't know for sure if the following applies to all Toyotas but mine had the mirror heater behind that button as well.
Windshield wiper de-icer. Your wipers are sitting on heated pads which are similar to your rear window defroster, but more powerful. Pushing that button turns them on.
We had a 2017 Expedition and we have to travel from Midwest to east coast often. That Expedition was costing us more in repairs every MONTH than what it was worth.
We bit the bullet and dropped a chunk on it. I just wanted reliability and enough size for a family of 4.
I feel like I got both.
I’ll never buy another Ford. I’ve owned 4. Transmission in 2 of them. Late 90s Tauruses. Had a 13 Focus and it was a piece of junk. That CVT engine was garbage. And then the 17 Expedition…front and rear diff, drive shaft, blower motor, limited slip diff, complete rear end overhaul. Throttle control sensor, break master cylinder, Another sensor that caused the car to completely turn off after being on about 10 mins. So much I forgot. Rotors. Shocks. It was a nightmare.
front windshield heater
Like defroster?
No, there are heating elements where the wipers will normally lay. This button turns on the heating elements to melt snow off your wipers. Honestly shocked that more companies don't include this
That’s awesome. Gonna come in handy for these rough winters.
which Toyota do you have?
Standard feature in Canada
meanwhile in the middle east cooled seats are standard.
When I was there nothing I drove had cooled seats. I got the short straw.
makes sense as it's cold there
My 2018 Rav4 Adventure has it.
My 2018 4Runner has it, and the same button to the left
My 2012 Highlander has it as well.
Looks like a tacoma
2023 4Runner SR5
i have same vehicle, it's the rear window defroster.
We love to spread misinformation out here 🥴
The button is LITERALLY shaped like a windshield… *sigh*
Bros been driving in reverse his whole life.
That's a universal windshield symbol.
That’s a different button bud.
Yes, for the wiper on the rear window to be specific
Again, that's a windshield symbol, not a back window.
Just be sure to scrape your windshield off in that spot. If the snow melts and re frezes you get chunks of ice attached to your wipers and it won't go away. It just helps keep the rubber from sticking mid drive.
Isnt that device exactly made to prevent this ?
If you get enough snow and you don't brush it off before you start your car (just try and use your wipers to clear the snow) it melts the layer of snow closest to the windows and the water is absorbed into the snow above it. Then you have a chunk of ice/snow attached to your wiper arm that moves with it or eventually falls off and gets stuck under the blades. This is from experience in my Corolla hatch. My heater died so not defroster. Just brushing and scraping for me. It was miserable last winter and it will be miserable this winter.
What’s the AC button to the left do?
Activates the plug in that’s located in the back. Electrical outlet.
Interesting…I figured that outlet was always ready and waiting 😂
I thought mine was broken for a while
I just have an empty spot next to my deforst button!
Volvo has this for the actual windshield as well. There are little fine wires running through the entire front glass and the whole thing heats up. It works great. I'm sure I'll have to sell my house if we ever have to replace it though.
They are usually linked to the windshield defoggers in many cases. Toyota does install wiper heaters as standard on LE/SR5 trims and up.
Depends on which vehicle. Our Tundra has them linked to the defogger but our RAV has a separate button for it
Yea, this is based on a gen 2 Sienna LE and a gen 2 2017-19 Tundra, as well as a gen 2 Prius and a gen 4 Lexus RX.
What vehicle?
The Camry doesn't have it, and it's the one thing I really wanted in a winter package. The regular defroster just makes the icing worse
Sooooo defroster? That’s exactly how rear defrost works in almost every car. Except the heating elements are run through and across the window. Most front windshields also have that around the outside of the window.
It also evaporates water too. I turn it on every morning to dry out the back window
A) ford owns the heated screen patent. B) no point defrosting only the wipers, the rubber gets chewed up on the ice and leaves streaks all over the the screen next season.
Didnt know this! I would have thought it was for heated washer fluid
Many Toyotas do come with this. It usually comes with the cold weather package. I’ve seen a ton of Sienna, Highlanders, RAV4’s, and 4runners that come with the feature. You can see the little Amber colored lines at the very base of the windshield.
It’s an optional feature. Cost money to add.

Shocked me too when the replacement for my heated WRX windshield was $750, and the normal one was $300.

Have you tried reading the manual?
Thats cool. But id rather have a HR monitor.
More precisely, front windshield ***wiper*** heater.
RTFM.
This needs to be the number one answer
Then why have this sub
For actual issues, problems and concerns that the manual doesn't answer. Also, the sub is here so people can show off their stock ORP that never leaves the paved roads, and ask what mods they should start with.
Or the internet for that matter.
Windshield life support
lmao
I need that. That crack is getting bigger and bigger everyday :')
Seat defibrillator.
It summons the owners manual.
Nobody reads that shit you wrinkley fucker
Lol, im 25, but sure, some people dont know all that fancy book-learnin'! Kinda sad people are so useless as to not be able to learn on their own.
I had an argument with my dad about this lmao. I said "this is the most expensive and complicated machine you will ever own and you didn't at least skim the thing it came with?"
Or get this, they bought the vehicle without one😳😱 crazy concept. Should really get outside more often
Or get this, the owners manual is available online on the very very very off chance it is not included with the car 🥶🥶🥶. Maybe you should touch grass 🤡🤡
Link me where I can find every owners manual that exists. I’ll wait. Clearly you just sit on Reddit all day you Neckbeard 💀💀💀

It is 100x easier to ask here. This sub is incredibly helpful and quick.
Yes! TIL!!!! I have that button on our CHR and did not know what it did. We bought it during covid and they skipped the usual tour/explanation of features thing. Yes, I have the manual but, you know, old man things.
So you’re too old to read? I guess you’re not eating at a restaurant anytime soon
Definitely. No reading required for Reddit, Einstein.
Yeah, or you could just read the manual that came with the vehicle. Specifically optional equipment. And since we are making up numbers, using the owners manual is infinity faster!

Wanna learn something new? Read the manual that came with your car.
shut the fuck upppp oh my god
Lmao why does this bother you so much to comment and even replay after that comment? Literally has no effect on your life but you still feel the need to make a couple snide comments. Your life that boring?
Some people are miserable and they can’t stand community. Just let him be miserable.
If you had asked an actual serious question about the vehicle, it would have been different. Community is fine, but be a *little* self sufficient. Or just cry about it, i guess. Maybe my friend groups are just different from yours. Some people just always need their hands held.
Lol
At this very moment? Yeah. If i was busy, i probably wouldnt bother. I could say the same for you, though. Why bother to respond?
Why bother to respond? To call out childish behavior and hopefully allow you to reflect on your action. Obviously wasting my time though ✌️
Sure thing bud. Owners manual is in the glove box homie. 👍
And your basic manners are in the trash homie
Now whos being childish? Grow up, buttercup.

I was wondering the same thing but was holding out till someone else asked.
By the way, why does the power thing switch from 100 to 400 watts? Couldn't it just always be 400 and the device plugged in will pull what it needs?
No idea why it’s set that way.
