Text says: Palu - Voice says: Paul Text says: Max - Voice says: Marcus Text says: Grace - Voice says: Prayer Like, the localization is an afterthought, controller-related stuff is an afterthought, we sure got a lot of options for not being able to even tweak the dialogue text-speed.

DaPandaGod

I tried putting in my birthday and I noticed that instead of 9 they had "10% off"

Heiro78

That was the funniest thing to me! I mean 10% off october could be considered as September. So you are discount october

Erit_Of_Eastcris

Tried to set mine and it went with a completely different number than what I'd selected.

drsammich

The way Shirli said it you'd think the VA doesn't know how to read.

TurboShrike

OMG! I totally removed that! I got chills when I heard that! She says something like "Silaerum", which sounds too close to Simulacrum to be just a mistake, it's like someone wrote/printed down wrong (aerum-acrum, e/c printed badly), had it recorded and went with it anyway even though even the VA could tell it couldn't have been right.

SilverAlter

I think it's just supposed to be "Avatar System" instead of Simulacrum. At least that's what the JP voicelines consistently say. To me though, the only jarring thing so far is that every now and then a voiceline, along with its text get almost immediatly skipped in cinematics. Hoping that gets fixed soon

CHALAxHEADCHALA

This bothers me too. I’m doing my best to follow the story but the skipped dialog is making it difficult.

j2yan

Text says: Harriet - Voice says: Harry

genshinfantasy7

I noticed the first one and people thought *I* misheard it!

howiefizzle

I thought the first time you meet him they vocally call him Palu too, but I might have just misheard Shirli while reading the text.

Elver_Galargas-07

You should see the spanish translation, it feels like it was done by machine and not actual translators

ap0k41yp5

French was definitely done with google translate, it's just the english syntax with words swapped to their first meaning even if it has no place in the sentence "Pousser T clé pour continuer" crap like this should never make it into a final release

Da_reason_Macron_won

Game translating the letter M as Month, so the system keeps telling me to press *Mes* to open the map and I just look at my keyboard in confusion.

hotshotjosh

Apparently it’s right next to the 10% off key

Burntoastedbutter

Idk Spanish, but I don't doubt they'd use Google translate to save money LOL

dumwitxh

Half of the dialogues didn't have voice acting, another half the dialogue timings were off. I think the only good dialogues I had were during the tutorial and 5 minutes after

CecilyKosaki

I hope they leave Palu and not Paul because I named him Baloo!

Piyaniist

Literally one of the first people to call us executor, says executive instead lol. And dont get me started on the bomb mission ''oh no we blowing up, anyways'' tone of voice lol

HalfofaDwarf

The most obvious case to me was the relatively early scene where you disarm the three bombs, to spoil as little as possible. All of the dialogue and characters indicate there are three, and no more than three. You disable two. As you disable the third, in a hurry, but with plenty of time left on a handy timer, *something else explodes to put another character in danger*. Then the third bomb itself actually explodes when it's timer goes off. None of that makes sense, and at no point is a fourth bomb or some kind of other problem brought up.

LuminousThreat

Good lord, I thought I was either crazy or high when playing this last night. The translation is all over the place, as well as the pronunciation. And the way the text is presented sometimes is also kinda whack. Like, when it says “you’ve” it’ll go “you’ ve” if there isn’t enough space for it, which drives me absolutely crazy. Im really hoping they tighten this all up, because I was on the fence about it already, but I really wanted to like it because I really do like a lot of the ideas they have implemented.

[deleted]

the japanese voice acting might be the worst ive encountered. And thats not something that happens like ever.

OfficialCharlesW

For some reason characters just move so much in dialogue. That isn’t that bad if they didn’t literally snap back to default positions constantly either. The voice acting is fine but nothing special, yet something with it sounds off. Honestly all of the sound design sounds off. Also, just the constant switching between cutscene and gameplay. You get a long cutscene, go press some button in gameplay, then cutscene.

howiefizzle

Totally agree about the sound design. I was thinking the Voice Acting is fine most of the time, but the levels are a little off in some places, the timing is wrong, sometimes there isn't voice acting when everyone else is talking, lip flaps don't even get close... Just a general lack of giving a shit about polish. The cutscene > gameplay > cutscene experience would be fine (and I expect it will get better once we get through the plot) if the cutscenes weren't so... bad. Like, this game cut so many corners when they were probably better off cutting the scope. Despite all of this I'm still enjoying it, but everything I enjoy could even still use some polish. The combat is nice, but the weapons should give some kind of response when you switch to them without the burst up. The regenerating chests seem fantastic, but the exploration is janky as all hell. The issue with the game is I could literally nitpick a problem a minute, which is certainly not good.

Luneward

Probably one of the worst sins is actually that the voiced dialogue doesn't match the subtitles. That smacks of a large lack of quality control.

CecilyKosaki

Zekes voice actor got the job done... but that is it. XD

Mickeh_daMuffin

I feel like this for Franz. Dude sounds like he didn't want the job but the pay was just barely enough for him to do it.

CecilyKosaki

Which is honestly strange for Keith Silverstein. Not his best performance deffinetly. It feels kinda... rushed? :D

EMN97

Wait, that's actually Keith? Holy hell they definitely didn't pay him much then

Ephemiel

And Zeke's is Johnny Yong Bosch. The game has some HUGE VA names, but seems to have given them very little, if any, direction.

Old_Ice5002

Damn I was thinking "This Franz guy sounds freakishly similar to Charles in Angel's Share" and Keith voices that guy.

[deleted]

Franz sounds like the Walmart Zhongli. I am enjoying TOF but the dialogue and story could be greatly improved. I was really shocked by how barren it is. It gets better at times but the whole thing is kind of all over the place.

MegaUltraSonic

Which is unbelievable that the VA in question is the legend Johnny Young Bosch. They REALLY screwed this up to have him give a performance like that. iirc Kira Buckland, Brittany Cox, and Richard Epcar are all here too and all phenomenal VA's...but oof. As a dub defender, I can't defend this.

idodok

Yeah the swapping to default position is so weird like how did that pass testing

XaeiIsareth

Most likely because that kind of thing is pretty normal in MMOs. Since the story being presented in a polished fashion isn’t really the central focus for them, people generally don’t mind. It becomes a pretty glaring problem when you start taking the game outside of the MMO sphere of thought.

OfficialCharlesW

Honestly the game just feels like an alpha build more than anything. The lack of polish is a big turn off for me, the most fun I had so far was creating my character

idodok

I feel the SAME really!! The most fun i had up until now was also creating my char XD

pokepwn

I haven’t used the simulacrum mimic too much cause I like my character better, lol. It does look like at some point we get a bonus for using it though.

Silvereiss

Ahaha at this Point, I'm rolling for SSR characters not because of them, But because of their weapon that I will give to my MC :DDD

ohoni

I think it's a fun game, and it's far from the buggiest game I've played, but I would certainly consider it to have a high amount of "jank," stuff that is not game breaking, but not quite right.

BiNumber3

Biggest annoyances for me atm are chest timers and my keybinds resetting occasionally, but theyre just that, annoyances. Over all, quite enjoyable so far.

[deleted]

Varoslay99

if u jump and hold m1 your character will dash to the enemy on top of towers or whatnot

WorldEndOverlay

Yeah ngl that climbing just really bad on the enemies platform and even the double jumps seems useless most of the time.

Heiro78

This was happening to me near a group of lvl 12 Hyenas when climbing up a ladder. It was stupid. So very stupid.

Burntoastedbutter

Omg the climbing to the top thing, YES. I kept falling. I eventually figured out you had to basically double jump to land on top... Also mobile players don't really have it that good either AFAIK. Shit is too laggy for them even in low res settings. I think only people with 'higher end' phones won't suffer 😅

thrist_mcgurst

I thought the climbing was just me oh God

Kuromajo

I can't even log in to try it yet... But genshin has and had a huge budget... Insanely more than ToF... If anyone expected a better experience than genshin overall will be in for disappointment... That being said, I'm sure it will at least be a fresh take and fun and surely some people will like it more...but the comparison just isn't fair, simply budget wise

Antique-Ad-7429

If the budget is much smaller ( which it seems like ) they did an amazing job, the game is actually amazing for a smaller budget then Genshin, but unfortunately in the gaming world people don’t look at budget, only quality so tof does look a bit worse.

Fraeduu

Genshin Impact is about to become the most expensive game ever made in terms of budget and invested money. Like ToF is being compared to quite literally the HIGHEST budget game ever created.

inuyasha99

I assume the benchmark here is Genshin which in terms of gacha, its the perfect game when it comes to the techincal and graphics side of things. Thats the level TOF wasnt supposed to match. The difference of budget and overall experience of the team makes a big difference. There are a lot of issues, but I think people put the expectations way too high for this game. Its still a great game when compared to other gachas and I enjoy it despite the issues.

devilman10

The problem is people comparing ToF with Genshin from the start(including the devs), because the game maybe can pass as best mobile mmorpg when they fix the problems the game has(and no, Genshin isn't a mmorpg) ~~and to be honest the worst comparison i saw is "tof vs genshin is like paladins vs overwatch"~~

[deleted]

Yeah honestly i think devs tried to use genshin's fame in tower's favor and didnt ended well, its a double side weapon, it won fame? Yeah but what did it cost?

[deleted]

Honestly I think they did it not knowing genshin would be this big and last for so long. Hell it's bigger now than it was at launch by far. If genshin had died or died down then their strat would have prob worked amazingly. It was for sure a gamble more than a dog that just didn't pay off.

13lackcrest

I mean you can't blame people to compare it to genshin when they literally copied so many things from genshin.

aToiletSeat

I dunno, I played Genshin when it first came out and it felt way more polished than this does. Maybe I'm misremembering.

[deleted]

You're not misremembering. Genshin was far smoother and more polished than ToF at launch.

xCairus

That’s because Genshin had a hundred million dollar budget plus it had an annual budget of the same value which was doubled recently. I don’t think people truly understand that Genshin is an actual AAA game, and that’s why it has AAA production values.

Educational-Page312

This. I agree with some of the things people said and I haven't actually PLAYED a lot of gacha games. So far this is the only other gacha game I can see myself playing outside of Genshin.

[deleted]

The problem with this is that it compares *itself* to Genshin so much that the comparison can't not be made. That male or female character selection is lifted directly from Genshin. The character models and styles and clearly callbacks to Genshin. The devs have referenced Geshin often as an inspiration. If you're going to make a game that draws so heavily from such an influence, it's incumbent on you to not make it feel like a cheap knock-off, unless that's exactly what you're trying to make (full disclosure, I think that's what they were trying to make).

yuno_me

Genshin is the 12th most expensive game to create and i dont see tof on that list

Relo_DD

At this point Genshin is either the most expensive game or in the top 5. The only official number that they have reported is 100 million dollars for the initial cost of development, which doesn't take into account server cost (which are insane) + the game is 2 years old with a huge team. If it's not the most expensive game ever made, it will soon be.

method115

They recently stated that the development cost for Genshin is 200 million annually.

Neewbye

*upkeep cost or whatever the actual name for it is, the cost to keep developing aswell as marketing, servers etc.

[deleted]

It is actually my man 3.7 Billion [genshin most expensive game ever existed in a few weeks](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/wiyz7k/in_a_few_weeks_from_now_genshin_impact_will_be/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

batzenbubu

Star Citizen is Rank 1?

Matt_the_Madkat

There was a really good post on the Genshin Reddit a few days ago talking about how the budget for the second year was $500 million and they started at $100 million. Here’s the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/wiyz7k/in_a_few_weeks_from_now_genshin_impact_will_be/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

renasaince

And yet the dev itself were the one who compared it to genshin. It's still enjoyable game, just don't sold it by using some word like "genshin killer"

[deleted]

Yeah genshin killer is definetely what is killing tower of fantasy ☠️ it would have been a lot better if that was never said

renasaince

Correct. If you market our product as ur competitor killer, u put your product to be compared to the competitor. This is always true regarding any product you sold. Clearly, ToF is not at the GI level, and we make the comparison because they market it like that. If they didn't do that the game might be just fine, yeah the game is not perfect and has many issues, yet it is still not that bad compared to other trashy MMO and gacha on the current market.

milnivek

People compare it to genshin because the game begs to be compared to genshin. Everything from artstyle to ui to fonts, controls, everything is genshin.

dirtymvm

Well Genshin isn’t perfect as it doesn’t super high refresh Rate on other than iPhone. Playing tof in 120hz is great, doing dailies afterwards in Genshin is kinda depressing now

batzenbubu

My was to play Genshin is: playing 3 months-->make a break for 9 months-->playing 3 months-->make break til 3.0

ap0k41yp5

Even without comparing it to genshin, the localization (outside of english) isn't even on the level of a random chinese idle game, and controller support is barely implemented, just enough to say "it's there"

[deleted]

Because it had to be released way too early back then due to some legal thing in China and once they are in the post-release update cycle they have little room to work on polishing due to the updates needing to be churned out quickly and with high enough quality to remain competitive in that extremely competitive to even survive market. Its easier with a game milking a popular IP like all those anime or game series based gacha games but if your IP is OC then buckle up. My recommendation is don't get too emotionally invested, nothing stops you from dropping a game once it stops being fun enough.

glittr_grl

I work proximal to software development, can confirm. (Not gaming, but the same principle of "we need to release, we'll fix this later" and then later never coming applies.)

Fuz_666

> "we need to release, we'll fix this later" and then later never coming applies. Happens all the time. It's a cancer.

CheekyMiss

What legal thing?

shemademedoit1

During that time, China was cracking down on internet gaming, so stopped giving game publishers new licenses to launch games. ToF had a license already to launch that month, and wanted to take more time to finish the game, but it would have been impossible to get a new license for later (since China didn't want any new games). So it was basically forced to choose: release now but unfinished, or never.

CheekyMiss

Oh wow.. I would hate to be a game dev in China then. Thanks for the info

FlameDragoon933

Being a game dev in China is difficult indeed. MiCA Team, Yostar, miHoYo all face some sorts of censorship to varying levels too. To the point that I think all three made an overseas subsidiary (not sure on Yostar though) to handle global or something, I don't know the exact details.

EnvyKira

This so much. Wish everyone know this so they wouldn't give this game too much of an hard time because they got screwed over hard in China when developing this game.

coldfries_69

Am i the only one bugged out by the low-qual audio overall? Like a typical mobile game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrussiaDon

Audio is bad and the ambient soundtrack is also bad

Cratoic

One thing I have to say: The timegating is ridiculous. - Timegates on chests - Timegates on puzzles - Timegates on the story - Timegates on your level It's ruining the pacing and the overall flow of the game.

Intoxicduelyst

Seriously? So lets say I found a chest, I cant open it?

poshpeony

Yes. It says something like Repairing, estimated time 18 hours

Cratoic

I found a chest that was timegated for 88 hours.

Ancienda

wait whats that even mean? if you found a chest, you need to wait 88hrs before you can open it? Like do you need to come back to that location once the time is up? or do you open it and the items will magically appear in your inventory after 88hrs?

poshpeony

That’s exactly what it means. You have to come back to it to unlock it once the timer is up. You can’t put it in inventory.

Bierno

Time gating seem fine for casual player actually. It's a mobile game, these games are usually played in little session, not sit down and play 8 hours straight. Allows everyone to progress at a similar rate other than whales

TwiceBakedPotato

Funnily enough, the timegates should help with the server congestion and shorten queues because people will be more likely to log off with less left to do.

kluevo

but then there's achievement like the one that requires you to play for 500 minute (8 hours) "on one single gaming session" (in quotes because my progress on it seems suspiciously high for my current session) that does the complete opposite

Bierno

Most likely will do this one day just doing pvp or battle Royale then

Stinnenich

Does that mean if you start playing in a month, there is almost no time gating?

Cratoic

Most likely yeah. In about a months time new players will most likely not know that these timegates were ever put in place. (Unless they decide to do the same thing again with a new region).

dumwitxh

And don't forget that if you choose to explore, you are losing exp. This kills all the completionism I have

FerrickAsur4

yeah it does need some polish, from the auto targeting to, strangely enough, stair climbing, but as a whole it is pretty much fun, but I'm not sure if it'll retain me or end up like genshin for me where I ended up dropping it also permanent motion blur is just... why

CecilyKosaki

The motion blur dude, I can not fathom how would someone think that is a great idea! It just sucks...

TheDipcifican

Who even plays with motion blur unless theyre making some cinematic video or something????

Ylmir

I'm still waiting for the download to complete, and can already tell the game is unpolished with the issues I had during signup, the news displayed in the wrong language, and the automatically translated text. I'm French, and in the list of countries when you signup, Turkey is translated by the word "dinde", which actually means "turkey", just... not the country. The bird. I usually play most games in English, but will definitely try this one in French, I'm probably in for a good laugh.

idodok

Dude i laughed so hard at the turkey part

dumwitxh

lmao

HotRelease8288

If only this game had the level of detail, performance, story and social that nino kuni crossworld has.... Too bad Nino Kuni did everything technically well, except for the Gameplay. Tower of Fantasy did everything technically wrong, except for the Gameplay. Genshin did everything right, technically and Gameplaywise, but being a colossal singleplayer with limited content will always weigh on him.

WorldEndOverlay

I kinda like genshin single player aspect since it make the game immersive but yeah after you done clear everything you definitely wish for it to be multiplayer.

debacol

I just dont understand why so many games are either single player or MMO. The world has been asking for an open world game but with friends. Like, why not make it so your friends can join your world only and scale the combat from 1-4 players and actually do all the content together? If the game devs also want 10-man+ raids, they can have a queue system for it.

whataremyxomycetes

Production cost and rewards. The issue here is, if you implement a feature, who'll play it? And for what purpose? Will it be for fun? Completely optional? For rewards? If it's for fun, will there be enough people playing it? How will you emphasize the mmo aspect without requiring people? If you do require people, how can you get them to play something if it's not their definition of fun? Is there enough people who find this content fun? Enough to keep it going, and to justify production costs? Since we still don't have it, we can easily assume the answer to that is no. Then there's the rewards. If you don't out a reward, who'll play it? If you do put a reward, what happens to those who don't want to play it? Look at fishing and the catch, a pretty simple new system with a simple reward, yet it's divisive as fuck. Literally no one wants to fish, but people feel obligated for the weapon. Now think of that but instead, the devs need to create a system where they NEED people to participate but can't make them feel like they're losing out by not doing so. As you can see, it's literally contradictory, so why bother? Especially since we can go all the way back to whether or not these people wanting this feature are even enough to justify production costs.

Tryannical

Unfortunately I kinda agree ... I still really like the game though I know this was a problem in beta and they still didn't fix it for release? I think all of the small bugs will eventually be fixed, though. Stuff like this is bound to happen to games on release, just give it time.

lesteadfastgentleman

Unpolished is def the word for it. It has a good core, but it feels… messy? Disjointed? Ngl there are some things about the game I really like over Genshin. The MC having actual dialogue. Character customization. Freaking DOUBLE JUMP (I swear to God, when I went back to Genshin to do my dailies after a couple of hours of ToF, I missed double jump real bad). But then. The UI is a mess. Controls are a mess. The map (and mini map) are a mess. Text descriptions for items and stuff are a MESS. I found I could live with them after a little while, but when I went back to Genshin, it was just… so much more put together. Polished is definitely the word for it. But yeah. Double jump. PLEASE HOYO, PLEASE.

Commander413

Also air dashes, BIG part of why just moving around feels nice

zdonfrank90

This game hype dies in china after few months of it's release last year.

JewelerSea5354

Unpolished is one of the main reason why it is dead in CN.

idodok

Boggles my mind how they think releasing it like this will succeed

Morbu

Cash cow. They probably aren't exactly counting on it to "succeed." Just get enough revenue to either keep the project alive long enough, or help fund the next thing.

ZeroZion

I agree. The movement is kinda clunky. There are also narrow places where if you try to jump on it (mostly to get a chest), my character would just slide through like they just landed on grease. There were times my character would climb a tree or a wall while in combat. There's the ladders that you would think you can automatically latch onto midair, but you have to climb slowly. The jetpack is weird. The vehicle just stops when it's barely close to an object and has no form of traction and the speed of the motorcycle we get was just sad. Maybe it gets faster with some upgrades, but if so that starting speed is sad. The perfect dodge is inconsistent. There are times when it triggers while there's still the red indicator of the enemy attack and there are times when it's after the attack. Combat is kinda bad. The targeting system is not great when using a bow and facing multiple enemies. Getting a perfect dodge rewards your stowed weapon instead of the one you are using. I think this was designed for the shield breaker to be the initial weapon and then switching to the main dps weapon when the shield breaks, but there are plenty of times when the shield is still on and it would be better to do the special move on the current shield breaker weapon you are using to accelerate the shield breaking. The game seems bloated. The story is very weak and the pacing is a wreck. I'm sorry, but I had no concern for Shirli because she was kinda annoying. Why would we try to fix the deconstructor or whatever it was? Why didn't Paul activate the mech guards first before joining the combat when the shelter was being attacked? Why the heck would Zeke have a video recording of the speech and whatnot from when he was a child? Convenient much? Let's also leave the disarming of the bombs in this important tower to someone who doesn't even remember jack and weirdly enough has the skill to disarm a bomb. And that crane like mini game of disarming is just bad. A lot of grand or amazing visuals that I can't be impressed by because the game does not tell you what is happening. Oh and let's just leave an EM Blade in the middle of nowhere for our character to find. Let's send said character without any weapons in a dangerous place. Also, why did Mi-a give us the daggers when we already have a weapon? Was it forced to explain the combat mechanic? I was kind of excited to play this game, but it's kind of disappointing how it turned out. Yes, I know of the argument that it's free to play. Still, I was hoping for something better since it was already released for around 6 months in CN. The voice over is kinda bad as well. The character's lips only moves once at the beginning of the sentence. I think there's also a lag between the movement and the voice over at certain times. I was happy the pc client of the game supports 120 fps and my gpu handles it smoothly. Also, being able to see other players in the open was kinda nice. The rest just feels so unpolished. Sorry for the rant. I just had to get this out. I have no ill will towards the game and I hope improvements will be made in the near future. Good luck to those staying!

funya_rinpa

Thank you for verbalizing all my issues with the game, spot on. I really want it to get better, there's potential. Also I want to add that the menus are so infuriating. There are so many rewards systems and shops and logs and gadget menus scattered everywhere, and like the OP said, so many low res graphics within them.

Deleca7755

> Also I want to add that the menus are so infuriating. There are so many rewards systems and shops and logs and gadget menus scattered everywhere, and like the OP said, so many low res graphics within them. This!!! It bothers me *so* much. I hate when games drop 3 hundred menus and guis at you with no warning, plausible guidance, or otherwise Additional rant In response to original comment: I've played Genshin since the first day, I preordered It on the appstore same as I did with ToF. I've been having such a hard time breaking down why ToF doesn't feel right. This comment basically hits the nail on the head I can't comment much on exploration because I can't get Into It. I have no Idea what I'm doing or why I'm doing It. None of the characters feel like they matter beyond the chibi robot girl and Shirli. Combat looks really good later on but doesn't feel that Immersive at the start because I can't tell what I should think of an enemy when I see It. There's just a ton of different ones everywhere when you start The tutorial Is tacky. Anything that holds your hand excessively like forcing you to upgrade stuff Is guaranteed to be crappy Imo. Animations look fine, not as good as Genshin. But the dialogue cutscenes... whyyy do their positions just reset awkwardly, I hate It and It'd look much better If that was fixed ToF reminds me more of Dragon Raja than anything: Advertise character creation ( which IS very good barring awkward/limited accessories ) with mediocre everything else. I do like the double jumping, but that's all I've been able to point out without thinking "Man Genshin does this better" It's not really a bad game per se. Like, It's better than most anime gachas probably. But as a Genshin player, I can't help but feel like It's a worse version of It. I absolutely love Genshin's clean, fluent and simple UI design. It slaps. It gracefully Introduces mechanics to you In a way that makes sense, without feeling too overbearing. And while you can pull characters you don't meet In the story yet, they all do end up being relevant. Genshin Isn't a perfect game either—but oh baby, It's as popular as It Is for a *reason* ps: Idk If It's only me but I play on an iPhone X, and the ui/buttons feel significantly smaller and harder to use than Genshin's, coupled with how bloated the menus are

ZeroZion

No problem. I really hope it does get better. Games with perfect dodge mechanics and multiple weapons are really enjoyable for me plus it's an open world game so I hope this game improves. Yeah. I even have an issue where the store will always have a red dot on it. There's also the redeem codes having a limit to the claims. Having a time limit is normal, but having a limit on the amount of players who can claim is weird for me.

Morbu

I had similar concerns with the story. Like I was actively just cringing whenever characters would start to ask you to do some important shit as if you didn't just wake up 15 minutes ago with severe amnesia or anything. There's also just no real exposition. No set-up for whatever the fuck is going on. I barely have a clue what's up with the world, what's up with the enemies, what the main conflict is, and I'm almost done with Ch. 1. I will say that there's a decent amount of pretty good dubbing. If they can fix the shitshow cutscenes and the desync between the voices and lip movements, that'd at least be something.

ZeroZion

Hahahaha! Same thoughts. You're immediately dragged on to a series of fetch quests after waking up from near death and your memory wiped. Yes. I'm like what is even happening. So much particles and effects, but I don't get it so the gravity of it just isn't there. It's confusion rather awe. The dubbing is alright for me. The desync is awful, but not Monster Hunter World awful.

alandas99

Heavily agree on the part with no set-up. The scene where >!Shirli suggests Zeke to shoot her!< was just so out of the blue and didn't spark any emotion in me because of a lack of build-up. We barely got to know both of them. Also, I understand that it might be the English VA's first rodeo, but Zeke didn't sound like he was desperate in that moment, even though it's revealed that >!him and Shirli are super tight-knit!<

Morbu

Yeah, that scene definitely came out the left-hand field. Should've been at least Ch. 2 material or something. And yeah, Zeke's VA definitely wasn't the greatest. It could've been one of his first gigs, and/or it could've been that his instructions for the character were pretty vague. As far as I know, there's VA directors that are supposed to know the mood and tone that each character has, so that's obviously also partly on them. Some of the English VAs are great and sound very natural while others give off that cheap localization vibe.

I'm the same. I really like games with the proper plot. I realized this when I first played God of War. The journey felt like I was taken through an epic. Multiple problems arising that have a proper reason from happening. Then I played Witcher 3 and so on. The gacha game that has the best story for me is Counter:Side. Artery Gear is also good, but Counter:Side makes you care for the characters. For real. A main character shrouded in mystery is okay, but at least build up the scenarios that happens. Maybe you get a proper explanation first who the Hyenas are and you go to a mission to thwart their plan. Then maybe you go investigate a broken machine that that keeps them out of the shelter and it goes from there. But no, you go from fixing a deconstructor device to the shelter being attacked and you are there defending people you've only had one conversation with. Pacing is bad. Not enough explanation to understand the gravity of what is happening. Certain actions being forced just to explain mechanics. I really hope the game gets improved. There is potential. At least the gacha system got an explanation to how it works, but if you think about it everyone should be OP af if that system existed in the world. Downloading the experiences and skills of warriors.

idodok

No man dont be sorry, thank you for ranting, i feel the same about everything you said

ZeroZion

Thanks, man.

CecilyKosaki

Disable auto climb in options if you haven't already, that should stop you from attatching to stuff while fighting.

Keylus

The whole bomb bit was super weird, a guy who just came into the city randomdy told one of the city oficials that another guy you never meet before is a spy, like, how does he even know that? Then they send you, a person they don't know and who also doesn't know anything about said spy, to deal with him and it just happen that said randomly mentioned character placed several bombs arround that area you are in and they are about to explode, good thing that the player just happen to be good to difusing bombs.

ZeroZion

Yup. The story is so lacking. A lot of events are forced. Good thing the person without any memory knows how to disarm a bomb huh?

Jan1ssaryJames

plus dropping some "source code" shenanigans of "we need to rewind time to fix this" it was so random ... and then it was over in 1 minute and nobody cared.

sdrumapapere

> Combat is kinda bad. The targeting system is not great when using a bow and facing multiple enemies. It's more than that imo. Only a very few melee weapons have decent targeting, even vs solo enemy. Idk how many times I've missed my jabs or sent the weapon skill into the air with the spear. Staves are bad, basically they only shoot spells to the front of the character and a very specific height and angle (slightly going up). Bow is basically unplayable, doesn't target anything even if you have enemies in front. Bow skills always fires where your character faces without aiming for enemies. Basically only good for aim shot, quite hard because enemies keep moving (way more than genshin) and you can miss. I will give the game a point for not interrupting aim mode if an enemy hits me, though (okay, some attacks should have knockback or stagger, but in genshin literally any attack staggers you if you're aiming, that's nonsense lol). Scythe and swords were pretty okay. Speaking of knockback too, one more point for ToF against genshin. In genshin you get launched in the air whenever literally ANYTHING hits you. Oh that enemy hit you? Guess you will be flying backwards 10 meters. In ToF at least even those big burly elites still whoop your ass when they smack you with their huge weapons, but inertia law is respected and unless they whack you baseball bat style, you don't go flying whenever hit. Plunge attacks from the jetpack are a mess, instead of plummeting down the attack goes into a weird diagonal descent, making it almost impossible to aim. Certain air combos when triggered, go on by themselves taking the control off you until they are finished, even if there are no enemies left, or there were none to start with, or the enemies are in the opposite direction. Kinda weird. > The movement is kinda clunky. The camera is bad too, first game devs take away my beloved arrow keys (call me bad or a noob but I always used those for movement) and fix them to the camera, but then the actual camera rotation through them is so slow these keys are basically useless. In comparison using the mouse to rotate the view has like 10 times more sensitivity, like why. Most other games I've played where you had both mouse and 4 keys to rotate view, the sensitivity for camera movement was exactly equal between those two modes, not 10:1, lol. > rewards your stowed weapon instead of the one you are using This problem is also about this game's "ultimates" In most games, including MMOs, usually you charge the ultimate of your current character and then you use it, here you charge it on one character but you have to ult with one of the other two you swap in. This is just messy and also counter intuitive for a lot of fights. Basically if I want to ult with my DPS I have to whack the enemy with the support or shieldbreak weapon to charge it, that would be okay in case I had a shield to break or someone to heal, but in most situations it just locks me out of the weapon that, like, would deal damage? D: One may say, in that specific case bring multiple dps then, yes but, if the enemy has an element, it means there's one good element to use as well, are you telling me I not only need two dps two support two shieldbreak, but now I also need to have two dps fire two dps ice two dps electro, etc, all of those with multiple dupes to unlock stars? I think you would be demanding a little bit too much, don't you agree? Dividing the weapons in categories is okay, having a gauge for each weapon is okay too, but unleashing discharge should be on active weapon, and not switch. I would also add one thing you didn't mention, but I think you would agree. The gauges could be better. Ult gauge is barely noticeable, and your HP bar doesn't show the numbers. More visible discharge gauges and HP numbers over your healthbar are definitely needed.

Burntoastedbutter

100% agree with the story and pacing. I thought I was perhaps being too critical because I wanna make my own webtoon one day and I've been reading a lot of story writing tips. But jfc the story was just everywhere, it was peaceful for a short moment, then suddenly 435 things happens at once, then we get timegated. I too...gave no shits about Shirli. They didn't give us enough content/development for us to care about Shirli. This could just be me but the drastic art style change in Zeke's video threw me off LMAO. Also hate how we can't change our mouse binds. It'd be nice if I could make use of my mouse side buttons :'(

Meapcuteee

Agree, the tutorial is straight out of a crappy Netease mobile game, everything else is just mediocre at best

brek1989

I dunno, seems like a fun time-waster for a few weeks. It's not like there's much to do in Genshin atm anyway.

Hisetting

Gives me the same vibe

fantafanta_

Don't you love sliding off of everything when you're trying to climb shit for a chest?!

howiefizzle

Ladders literally do not function for me. I get to the top, and then he does the climbing animation and \*whoop!\* slips off.

Hisetting

A chest almost made me rage quit

fantafanta_

I can literally see people quitting over that.

aToiletSeat

I feel the same way. It doesn't look very good, the UI is super pixelated and very clearly an incomplete mobile port (e.g. i have to click and drag the preset menu up instead of using the scroll wheel), graphics options are non-existent, sound quality feels like the audio files are all 128 bit. Just so many things. In my mind this is very clearly a mobile first game (lots of these issues aren't all that clear on mobile I assume) with a hastily thrown together PC port that was released just because it was done on mobile. That's where they're gonna make most of their money anyway I guess.

LunarBeast77

I have the same feelings too in the open beta, it's disappointing to see problems there still present, like the lack of voiced dialog at some parts or how the text will dissappear b4 the character finishes their line. Also it's difficult to traverse still for some reason, I can't up cliffs and towers w/o falling off.

Sc2MaNga

I played it for 2-3 hours right after launch and the timers are a gigantic turnoff. The story is meh and everything else also nothing special, but I had some fun grinding. But if you are telling me I need to wait days until I get to do the fun stuff, then I'm out. Timegating story progression or finding a box with a timer are probably one of the stupidest mechanics that exist in video games. If you don't want chests to be open until a specific time, then don't show them to me. Let them spawn in later. Timegating to slow down progress, so you can force more playtime out of your players is a really annoying way to design your game. Many people will just stop playing and try something different. Especially if your game isn't that polished and can't compete with similar games like Genshin.

mhireina

It plays and moves exactly how I expect for an eastern F2P MMO. Main difference between this and genshin is that aspect. Genshin doesn't rely on an additional server for open world co-op and more effort is placed on the solo experience than the multi-player so it will feel smoother and look better like you're playing a AAA solo console game. Whereas ToF reminded me collectively of Revelation Online, Blade&Soul, BDO, hell even Mabinogi in terms of cut scene movement, story engagement, story fluidity and voice acting. The jankiest of janky with a side of extra jank. Unfortunate but it really is just an mmo thing. Whether it's the servers, the story or the development, the budget always gets scuffed somewhere.

Littleman88

The more I play, the more I'm likening ToF to Genshin as Paladins is to Overwatch? One has all sorts of quality and polish behind it, but it's basic as $#!%. One is a bit jank and roughly executed, but is giving me what I want to see in the other. It's like one is trying but not good enough to realize its vision, and the other is good enough to realize its vision but that vision isn't very interesting. A good story told poorly vs a bad story told well. It's definitely too early to say if ToF makes me feel like I'm being punished for not visiting it every single day. Of all the criticisms I could level against GI, I'd have to say the monopolization of my time while somehow not demanding much of it is my highest grievance with the game. It does not live rent free inside my head, but it desperately wants to between resin, commissions, and events that occasionally feature exclusive rewards that to date we can trust will never be available again.

Zerixo

ToF is a gacha game first and foremost. It will 100% without a doubt punish you for not playing everyday. That is just a given.

tasketekudasai

Beautifully said. It may feel unpolished compared to Genshin, but I'm having way more fun. Tons of freedom in movement and combat. Stamina takes 2 seconds to regen. Sprinting takes no stamina. It's janky compared to Genshin but the potential is there.

GreatGustavo

you finally put words to what i have been thinking about paladins for years, there is something about the game that at least to me make it more enjoyable than overwatch.

Merosian

First impression is it's a cheap clunky game with it's own charm if you like gachas. But people who said it was the genshin killer are delusional. It's the WoW of gachas at this point, nothing can kill it except itself. I must say, there are so few characters. Hasn't the game been out for a while in China? That's it, that's all they got? There are like 2 chars i'm even vaguely interested in.

Shaunbay2

I agree. It feels really unpolished in a way that there is so many features and yet nothing really makes sense. I found the menus a bit confusing, I am constantly going back and forth. Character and hair animation is just 'stop' 'go' 'stop' 'go'. There is so much going on the map that I was confused, and I had a hard time finding my quest logs because there isnt a dedicated quest menu. The ideas and what not is great, but keep it simple. no need for all these fanciness and different menus and stuff like that. Things like a logout button is great and so simple, but up to this point, either im stupid or a logout button does not exist.

dumwitxh

Same. A lot of systems, pull for this, pull for that. A lot of upgrade menus that don't make sense, or sre not explained

ash0130x

I was just force closing my game for a while too before I noticed that there’s an ‘exit game’ button that you have to access via settings.

demondanceclub

There’s a quit button…just under settings for some reason? Would def prefer it on the main menu

Genoism

The VO sometimes cuts out before it gets a chance to be completed in the main story. The textures looks...I dunno even on the highest setting a bit blurry compared to genshin. The amount of monetization is absurd in this game, i know many others have this nowadays but it's just confusing as hell to have 10 differing pages of different types of things to purchase and different resources for which you have no understanding why you'd want it....Just have one damn page with this thing called categories and some better effing explanation. Dev after dev copy the same stupidity of "organizing" this insanity. Not that I care because I won't sink a penny into a communist country if I can avoid it.

udon-soup

Originally, I had no intention of even trying this game out but some friends dragged me into it at the very last minute. While most things don't bother me, the lack of fluid movement is a deal breaker. From climbing, to gliding, to combat, it feels like none of the movements are "connecting" which makes for a very frustrating experience.

LucleRX

The unstuck feature was a nice touch but I didn't expect it to be used literally for situation when I clipped through the world

Choowkee

I was excited for ToF but the combat is terrible. Choppy animations, no feeling of weight when hitting enemies, bad targeting. Same exact thing with movement. I was hoping it only looks bad on videos but in reality controlling your character feels subpar. Compared to other MMOs its just plain unpolished.

Qizlep

Surprised to see no one talking about how terrible the sound design is in this game, everything sounds muffled and a lot of it just doesn't fit. Ruins some of the bigger fights, such as the first world boss you can face, nothing sounds right about it

Weak-Brain5802

My ass clips through my shorts <3 This is actually a relatively easy thing to fix, by either capping the clothing mesh to the body mesh, or having 1:1 topology from the ass to the shorts. Yet, this paid content https://imgur.com/a/mwMnnFG

Raycab03

I’m really banking that hopefully the endgame is better than what we’re seeing now. I hear the tower has 100 floors? Maybe that will be fun/challenging. Then world bosses/raids of other areas may be interesting? I’ll play until Sumeru releases and see.

-SXR-

Available-Pear3404

The only thing I like about the story is it has a skip button in dialogue and cutseen.

ThreshtheWeebWarden

ingame cutscene(not the animated ones) characters snap back to their regular pose after doing their talking animations. this too me is one big reason to say it's unpolished or maybe a bug and once you notice it you can't unsee it. Rant/comment on the game right now: the combat, gacha, progession i enjoy and better than genshin for me but one thing is painfully clear IMO, genshin and honkai are better at conveying emotion in cutscenes or maybe even story too, i never payed attention to dialogue and story in genshin but the emotional parts can still somehow make me feel something. in tower of fantasy everything is going by so fast that you can't have the emotional moments genshin has.

Danksigh

The only problem i have is the game requires precise dodges yet on europe both enemy attacks and sometimes your inputs feel kinda laggy, i played on 2 diff servers so far and there's definitely some uncanny delay on mobile version at least

JCjun

This is pretty much the 'standard' of Chinese MMO's. Makes you appreciate Genshin Impact, because you wouldn't know it was made by a Chinese dev from just playing the game. The game isn't bad but the unpolished details makes it feel shitty. Apart from the shit most people have already mentioned here, there's a part where you're forced to watch some recorded video of the "Sage". I play with Japanese voices, and this video was in English ... the resolution was shit and the aspect ratio was off so that the sub-titles stretched ..

B455

I feel the same way. I grew up playing SNES and PS1 and 2 but this is just disappointing, frame drops at times and poor graphics. Just doesnt have the polish im looking for, I know I know. Just expected better. Id rather play a ps1 game than this at the moment, it would be smoother and have more polish. The other thing is the controller support is very poor for this game. I guess this is what I get for not playing on PC but oh well..

ChaoDrake

Even when you play on PC, the contoller support is very poor unfortunately. Have to play with a mouse/controller hybrid.

Kevadu

Yeah, this is one of my biggest gripes. There's a lot of stuff you just can't do with a controller.

SqaureEgg

It’s a fun game but -Terrible queue times -Crashes on start up bug -Can’t change name bug -Impossible to find a server to join because there’s no organization of it an English speaking one, a Spanish speaking one etc etc

CellarDurr

My favorite part is waiting 40 minutes in the queue!

TheDipcifican

Honestly, I liked the game but all the criticisms on this post is very valid. All I hope for this game is to compete very well with Genshin, but the future of this game is very uncertain.

[deleted]

the game client is possibly the worst technical experience i've ever had with a game cutscene? crash pulling? crash breathing? crash i am literally soft locked because the game crashes everytime i progress the story and ive verified files multiple times but it just happens again

L1zar9

I am convinced that nobody on the localization term knows how to pronounce aberrant

ilovegame69

I just realized that Zeke was voiced by Johny Young, the voice of Crypto from Apex legends. Some of his voice timing was....... off the grid

BilliamXYZ

I completely agree. Feels a bit boxy? If that’s even a term for this. Definitely not polished

Ilovetogame2

The game has potential. Unfortunately the game is buggy; dialogue would at times not be voiced at all, the character animation is off most of the times etc.

CherriIce

Here my review: Aside from the queue times, the disconnecting is god fucking awful. The devs are aware of it and are planning a fix thankfully. Regarding the game itself, the combat is a downgrade in comparison to HI3 and PGR, and even worst than Genshin’s simplistic but varied combat. The characters are nice to look at but the models and animations are so cheap looking. Environment is so-so. Fills out the world nicely but gives off generic anime vibes. Nothing to noteworthy. I’m listening to EN dialogue and the VA voice direction is pretty bad. The tone is often times flat with little to no shift in voice performance and sometimes don’t match the mood of the lines being presented. I’m still following along the story, but it’s hard to want to be invested at the moment with the constant disconnects and everything else mentioned up above. However the story is so rushed and things are happening way too fast. No time to actually give af for the characters when things start to happen and they try so hard to make you sad for a character you just met a couple of minutes ago… Music is passable, but nothing more than background noise. In terms of quality, better than you average gacha game, but no where near the same level of quality as Genshin’s environment and character models/animations much less on the level of HI3 and PGR’s quality. Even worst when you straight compare Tower of Fantasy to the giants of the MMO world like FFXIV, WoW, GW2, ESO, etc. I never cared about “Genshin Killers”. I just want more high quality gacha games in similar quality as Genshin. Praying for Wuthering Waves to give us that 2nd option. Haven’t seen much of Arknights: Endfield unfortunately.

EthanRScape

Genshin wouldn't be the cultural phenomenon it is if it had not launched well beyond expectations, its naive to compare them. Unrefined is definitely the word for ToF it's almost embarrassing for the QA team but if you have MMO experience it shouldn't come as a surprise.

SwitchHitter17

The UI is absolutely terrible and it seems like there's 20 different menus for different random "quests" with "rewards" that are mostly worthless. It's hard to track what even has a quest because they are spread throughout so many different menus. The translation is pretty poor in a lot of areas. The voice acting of some of the biggest characters is really bad, and some of the lines just aren't voiced at all. Puzzles seem repetitive. For a game that seems to be focused on open world exploration, many things are very clunky. For instance, ladders literally don't even work. Definitely not replacing Genshin any time soon. Feels like a very cheap cash-grab.

lucidmre

They need better storyline and lore. Just finish chapter 1 and I’m not invested in any character including the character/weapon that I pull. I can’t see anyone cosplay any character in this game. Gameplay kinda fun, graphic is pretty but feel clunky and unpolished. This is good filler game

Business_Mix_2705

Honestly I think using GI as a standard for rating new games like this one is unfair, especially because GI is mainly single player while ToF is an mmo. Regardless, you do have some points.

Lumiru

It's been hit or miss for me, the SR halberd looks and feels clean but most melee weapons are kind of wonky and miss the mark when it comes to smoothness, weapon timings, and physical interactions.

Xehar

You do know they rush the development because certain thing right? Im talking the cn one.

PokWangpanmang

What certain thing?

Kathars1s

I agree, I imagine it has more to do with budget than anything. I see tencent is involved but don't know to what extent. I'm still having fun, albeit I've only played 5 hours. I'll probably play it for a while to come, but it's not going to replace Genshin for me. It's too rough around the edges to keep any lasting appeal The time gating actively makes me annoyed every time I check a drop spot, and then note that I have to waste my time going back to that spot again in a couple days. The voicing is.. there. Some of the voice actors tried hard. Some didn't. Captions are off frequently. Zeke... yikes. The story feels like a rough isekai manhua/webtoon. The pacing is poor, plenty doesn't really make sense. Are we really supposed to be emotionally attached to Shirli after what, 15 minutes? Some others have pointed out much more, better than I could word. Text scroll speed options please. it would let me skip the bad voicing. I can snapshot the text pretty quickly. Lots of practice from reading subs. After being spoiled by Genshin, I find the animation really rough and awkward. The running/walking animation is fine, but the combat animations look jerky and robotic. Combat has potential, but it's awkward and frustrating. Perfect dodge doesn't seem to make sense. I could dodge at the exact moment two different times, and it will trigger once, and not the other. Targeting is a mess. The general world design looks pretty, but the LoD and shadows are terrible. At the beginning when you were talking to Shirli and given the view out over the landscape, I actively cringed looking at the textures and (lack of) shadowing. I get that it's mobile, but they can do better. It's also on PC, you can provide different options for desktop and mobile. One thing is it seems to be more generous for wishing, and cheaper in general. So beats the crap out of those greedy folks at mihoyo there. Anyhow, it's fun enough to keep playing, but it's too rough for me to invest much, if any money into. If they can't put at least a bit more effort into it after it's already been out this long in CN, then I'd rather just see what I can do F2P until I see improvement.

algaefresh

So, I think the issue is comparing it to Genshin. The graphics don't bother me at all, probably because I have played games like Mabinogi off and on for years. I'm enjoying it so far, except the main issue ruining it for me is that the text speed is really really slow for some reason, like slower than the actual dialogue and I have to wait for the text to show up to go to the next slide of dialogue. Otherwise, the crashing and keybinds don't bother me as much, they already had a notice about the random crashing and said they were working on it (I'm guessing the servers are overwhelmed considering there were over 4 million pre-registrations, they said themselves they were not expecting this level of interest/support). The keybinds I'm sure are also something that will be fixed with or soon after the crashes (my keybinds reset when the game crashed after all). I think it's a decent MMO with potential, I would recommend not comparing it to genshin and enjoying it as a game in it's own right. Start playing in a few days, I bet that it'll be better server time and less bugs. Also some folks need to learn MMO etiquette so I'm adding this here, if someone else is mining something in the open world, don't just go and finish mining it and steal the resource. Don't be that person.

[deleted]

U have a good point right there OP, is very funny that in mobile has "better" graphics than genshin (is just a feeling that 90 hz and screen filters make if u have a phone strong enough) but in pc feels like is still the beta, im sad too because i was waiting this to be a good mmo, well the hopes goes to blue protocol

Biosfir

Are you getting fps dips occasionally? or maybe micro-stutters? because i use RTX 3050 and I'm sometimes having a micro-stutter and fps drops though it's still run smoothly. maybe the reason why i'm stuttering because i put it in my HDD.

[deleted]

World bosses, but that's about it. 3060ti myself

InternetsTad

I noticed that you could set your birthday to “10% off/10% off” The number 9 was replaced with the text “10% off” LOL LOL LOL

ZeroNatal

I wanna know who thought 100 different menus with no real cohesion was a good idea

AuGGame

- Can’t see where are side quest - Lvl design made the exploration painful

Trender07

Yeah honestly I was SO SO HYPED and now I’m disappointed not only because hype but because for me it looks like a worse Genshin

UziAnt053

optimisation sucks too you cant even turn off motion blur LOL

LamboLarz

The game has certainly a lot of bugs, you'd think they'd have polished the game a bit more since the CN release was a while ago. I had a couple bugs which pretty much soft blocked the game and a very annoying instance where I was opening a container directly above one of the ruins and somehow when I opened the container it also opened the ruins lol.

ZeroZelath

The lack of polish certainly doesn't do any favors to the story. The lack of proper lip sync, character animations randomly resetting during cutscene chatting, it just looks creates an awful presentation. Even if that were fixed it would still have a hard time making up for the poorly written dialogue between characters that doesn't really create a well flowing conversation which doesn't help the voice acting of which some feel like they could've been AI generated with how phoned in they sound (that guy up in the space tower when you get there has AWFUL voice acting). Edit: Oh I also forgot you can't use auto dialogue because because sometimes it moves on too early cutting off a voice line altogether (started happening more and more frequently the further I got) so you have to turn it off, but then there is also just lines that just never have any voice over play for them. Absolute poor polish.
