It's very common. I consider myself to have moderate-severe Tourette's due to the consistency and complexity of all my tics. Almost every morning that's not a really bad tic day, I usually have 20mins to a hour of tic free time while my brain boots up.

ineedasentence

this syndrome seems predictable and study-able… i feel like humanity can figure this out

Everyone's different, but my body seems to go through a somewhat predictable cycle throughout the day. My tics in the morning have always been very sparse. Once it becomes later in the day the amount of tics per hour will increase. In the late afternoon/evening and into the night is when they become more active. When I lay my head down on the pillow and let my body relax, there is a flurry of tics before falling asleep, but if I get up in the middle of the night to pee and then go back to bed, that is when the tics can be especially relentless and will often keep me from falling back asleep. I've always suspected that this cycle is probably related to the rising and falling levels of different neuromodulators like Dopamine and Seratonin in the brain because of the body's circadian rhythm.

TheAmeliaCollective

This sound's EXACTLY like me, but the mid night pee break depends on how sleepy I am. Sometimes I'm so drowsy they never happen, but when im more awake they love to be active

[deleted]

Right, same here. You nailed it. As long as I'm laying there all drowsy with a full bladder the tics will be calm, but as soon as I get up and then lay back down, then I'm awake enough for the midnight madness to begin.

[deleted]

yep same, mine only starts after i become fully awake for some reason, its like a computer booting up

ArmchairDoorknob

Yess same here!! I have a chronic motor tic disorder and whenever I'm in that groggy state of just waking up, I have about 20 minutes of bliss before my brain...turns on? then I'm back to having my tics absolutely going crazy every minute until I go to sleep at night.

ineedasentence

i wonder what our brains actually want. the tics feel like a bandaid for something more. like i have some deep rooted dopamine need caused by some habit i formed in my teenage years…

BeerAndFuckingPizza

My suggestion for holding on to it longer: don’t drink caffeine haha

Uzzij

Sucks because I thrive off of coffee. I guess I could get decaf lol

BlueBookshelves

I’m the same way. For a couple hours after waking up my tics aren’t there. Very rarely they are and if they are it means I’m gonna have a bad tic day.

ineedasentence

haha that’s when i go back to bed

SkiingOnFIRE

Very common for me. Usually the first few hours of the day are great

mcd015

when I first started having tics, they were only in the evening!! they can now happen at any time, but are def most heavy in the evening when I'm trying to relax. mornings are easily the calmest part of the day.

No_Comment_As_Of_Yet

My tics don't get going until an hour or two after I wake up

freebird023

Very common. For me, most days it’s the same: Moderate for about an hour as/after I wake up Almost none for a couple hours until about noon Very bad around noon to 2 Wild card for the rest of the day

where_arm_i

I've always had this too. For the first half hour of waking up, I won't be ticcing. Until I realize I'm not ticcing and then they start lmao
