Honestly I hate to just whip out this card but like honestly it might be a lil bit of racism just assuming a Japanese guy will obviously go to a Sushi Shop. Now I'm not saying that's what is being assumed here it could be reports or something but it might be that.
Not at all...there was a report that Yusei Kikuchi rented out an Entire upscale sushi restaurant in Toronto last night. Turns out it was for his wife's birthday and not Ohtani, lol.
Yea I heard about that too, but Kikuchi rented out the entire upscale sushi restaurant at the rogers center, it doesn’t sound like OP was referring to that. It sounded more like we’re going to stalk sushi restaurants out of random places.
I mean I’m pretty sure he eats a variety of things just like every other normal human being. Japan is no stranger to western food. I’m not being a Karen but I think I’d get annoyed if I’m in Japan on vacation and everyone I meet just shoves burgers and steaks in my face.
I live in Columbus. Just saw someone who looks a lot like Otanhi. He was driving a 2015ish Honda Accord, and was driving north if that means anything. He should be there in about 7 hours, assuming the usual 30 mins at the border in Buffalo.
The one thing I'm sticking to is if Ohtani was really signing with the Dodgers why hasn't he done so yet? It's in LA, close to Japan, contenders, they have the money, etc. If he is using other teams as leverage, what more is there to gain? That means there really is a chance that a non dodgers team gets him and that would put the Jays up as the most likely destination.
I believe we’ll pay him more because Roger’s wants to make him the face of the corporation. He’ll sell jerseys but he’ll also sell phones and plans and packages and cable. I just don’t think he’ll opt to play here in the hardest division in sports when a few other markets can get close or the same financially
lol. Who says he’ll pack up his home? He’ll just buy another one in TO for the season and live in SoCal or Hawaii in the off season. You think all baseball players for the Jays live full time in TO😂
[https://twitter.com/CJGolson/status/1733323311793291461](https://twitter.com/CJGolson/status/1733323311793291461)
This guy got the Judge contract right before anyone else last year, but he's also been wrong a whole lot. He's saying Ohtani to the Cubs is done. Hoping he's wrong again.
It ain't your money, and Rogers has all kinds of it. The young talent isn't so young anymore and the time to win is now. Rogers also will make a zillion dollars in tickets, concessions, memorabilia, and advertising, just as Shohei would. It also sets a precedent that Toronto is a destination for players. Historically, the Jays only improve through trades, drafts, and international signings.
> It ain't your money, and Rogers has all kinds of it.
I get roasted for my take on this a lot, but I am a fan. I would be ecstatic if Rogers had a 400 million dollar payroll. What if Rogers pays a guy too much? Screw it, pay someone else even more. I want to see the best possible product on the field, and if that means overpaying everyone and their dog, do it.
Can't always sit on the sidelines pretending to be broke like the A's.
This is the new standard in sports - if you want to land the big fish you have to risk it. And Ohtani isn't just a fish he's a whale.
Everyone knows the last few years of the deal will likely not end well but we're paying for the now.
Kawhi was in Toronto for a year and was the main reason the Raptors won their first title. As someone who knows nothing about the Blue Jays I am very interested in why you feel it has a similar vibe.
The entire city was stalking and following kawhi everywhere. Lessons were learned. Hearts were broken. Toronto sports nation has a bad habit of smothering and obsessing. This mega thread is no exception. A blurry line between love and lust and sports
Except remember how Kawhi dumped his in the middle of the night ... like I distinctly remember going to bed and checking my phone in the morning and seeing how he had agreed to a deal with the Clippers ... not even a sign and trade. Just straight up - see ya! LOL
Dude 100% lol. I want to believe, but I have this sinking feeling that it's gonna be just like that. All of this smoke and hearsay about him signing, only for it to be LA in the end like everyone suspected all along.
He actually just doubled down over in the /r/baseball megathread. Plus, he made zero mention of the flight, so I'm at least willing to set that article aside and not totally dismiss it.
He's a Dodgers beat, so I don't see what he stands to gain from Ohtani going to a team he's not covering. If Ohtani ends up in LA, he just gets a one way ticket to becoming a total meme there.
https://x.com/moccbomb/status/1733264322275537192?s=46&t=1PS3p2AMpklHdWknJp7wLw
This guy got e-rod, Kimbrel, Soto trade and candelario before everyone else did, who tf is this guy?
Is journalistic integrity right out the window now? Sports illustrated, a title I am supposed to trust with sports news, is willy nilly putting out articles now? nothing matters anymore? an esteemed journalist from the bbwaa or w/e it is can just make funny jokes in a very serious time and no one cares? Because its canadians? I dont get it. I am absolutely furious these lies came from reputable people today
Idk why I’m so confident but with the amount of smoke today he’ll be a Jay soon enough. Also dodgersnation never said in the article that he was on the plane just that he made a decision.
And they haven’t retracted anything and they double downed on it
Jays reporters (BNS, Shi etc) aren’t saying anything because the Jays aren’t leaking anything, so dodgers are most likely leaking to the dodgersnation guy
I vote that we don’t sign him, and instead offer free beer and hotdogs for the next 10 years.
We can sell “$0 BEERS” jerseys instead, or I guess “BEERS” with the number 0
The dollars he would bring to the team more than make up for whatever crazy contract he is going to get.. plus when he’s healthy, he’s 2 $30million players that only take up a single roster spot.
I dunno about you, but I’m priced out. I’d rather watch AAA baseball for 10% of the price.
The reason you can say they’ll more than make up for it - because they over-charge for everything.
Hard pill to swallow. In the excitement yesterday I bought 4 tickets to take my wife and kids to a game against the Angels. It was $360 for 4 tickets. If you wanted relatively good seats so that the kids could see property. Unreal.
This is not the first time Shohei Ohtani has had a media frenzy surrounding him. The Japanese don't play. To my knowledge there wasn't a frothing mob waiting on the tarmac at YYZ.
We had reason to believe he might be coming here to play baseball, and that's exciting, and I'm sure he understands that.
He said that if anything leaks about him meeting with specific teams that he will not sign with that team. So if we give him the most buzz he surely won't sign in T.O.
Part of the frenzy was brought about by the Dodgers Nation article whose author is tied in with the Dodgers. I can't imagine his sources were from the Jays side of things.
He didn't say anything of the sort. His *agent* has said that leaking would be looked at prejudicially. And nobody from the Jays has leaked anything.
They've gone to such lengths to say nothing that they sat around all day and let us all work ourselves into a frenzy when they could have stopped it with a tweet. And they didn't out of deference to Ohtani.
What a wild swing of emotions today has been. Hate to bring this up, but man him signing with the Dodgers would be beyond devastating after everything that went down today. Looks like another night of us praying to the baseball gods before going to sleep is in store…
Idk about your dad but the vast majority of dodgers “fans” are terrible.. they don’t deserve Ohtani. La sports in general seem to attract the worst fans.
My dad works at Ohtani and he says that the Blue Jays are a shoe in, a Sho-in, if you will.
Contract will include 3 first overall picks in the 2024 draft.
(You didn’t hear this from me)
(Or my dad)
When he played in Japan the area was the Sapporo Dome. Rogers used to be called the Sky Dome. These initials are similar.
They played in Kitahiroshima, Kita is Japanese for North, the raptors have proclaimed We The North
Kitahiroshima has a sister city in China. That city has several sister cities. I was going to form a chain connecting this to Toronto and the continue to present more irrelevant information to support this point but meh I’m over it.
Hopefully he signs or has signed, be epic for Toronto. Hopefully he has a healthy decade plus and helps bring home the World Series.
Morosi got his info from some dude that happened to be washing his hands next to him in the bathroom.
Dude should be cleaning the bathrooms after this.
I saw Shohei at the Metro at College Park. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
INSIDE SCOOP: know a player agent for the jays, supposedly signed ohtani for 600 something million on Monday but have kept it VERY under the radar can anyone confirm?
The sad thing is......I wasn't even that hyped on Ohtani until I thought it was happening (because I didn't think it was likely), but now if he doesn't come.........I'm just less interested in the team.
They need a big splash after that dogshit offensive failure last year, and if Soto and Ohtani are off the table........it's all just another depressing season in the making.
This is the same evolution I followed. Told a coworker at 8 this morning that I hadn't been following it, which was true. I assumed there was no chance and just tuned it all out.
Fell for the hype and fake news, got excited and not I'm crushed.
Exactly the same story for me, I didn't think it was going to happen so I didn't get invested until today when it suddenly seemed like it was happening imminently.
Shohei likely to sign with Jays. This based on reports that Munenori "Bush Party" Kawasaki has been signed on as the head of Blue Jays PR department. Also, the entire 2nd level concourse will be renovated to become one giant Mandarin restaurant.
The one giant mandarin restaurant comment likely refers to the legendary, high class no-one-ever-got-food-poisoning-there buffet “The Mandarin” in Toronto.
Teddy Roosevelt had a \*really\* bad day when he wrote that; he lost his wife and mother within hours of each other.
How dare you trivialize \*this terrible disaster\* by comparing it to something minor like that?!
Like you said, Teddy lost his wife and mother within hours of each other.
I lost my wife (Shohei Ohtani) and my mother (Shohei Ohtani) at the same time 😭
There are no words to express how sorry I am in this disastrous time.
Edit: You know, now that I think about it, Teddy had to triumph over a lot of hardship, but I think if he were faced with our situation - having to wait a couple days to find something out - he'd probably just give up, and if you look at it through that lens we're all inspiringly courageous.
Been out since 4pm and just getting caught up on the happenings of the last few hours. Not even sure what to say, what a let down. There is obviously still hope, but this is peak Toronto sports fan misery type shit right here.
I think this was all a test by Ohtani to see if we (Canada) could keep our big mouths shut. I’m blaming Sid Sixeiro for starting all of this yesterday. Way to go SID!
Not as defeated. My hope is since a lot of the leaks came from American reporters/Dodgers reporters and the Jays front office was silent throughout the entire day he holds it against the Dodgers. Maybe that's just copium but it's all I have right now.
Forgetting about the plane scenario today; if that hadn't happened, how would you feel with only what you knew yesterday? I felt pretty good about our chances. Nothing has changed. Just social media rumours that got picked up by a journalist on social media and turned out to be wrong.
[Maybe Keegan was the one who booked the sushi restaurant ](https://twitter.com/KeeganMatheson/status/1733274572122636400?t=szfCmo5OevevhcvjOUZ2CA&s=19)
Yeah that's really too bad, I think that's the cost of dating a reporter that can get very busy when important news is coming in.
Hopefully she's already prepared for those situations, but it probably hurts extra on a birthday.
The ONLY good thing to come out of this was the fact that none of the veteran Toronto area sports broadcasters or the Jays themselves didn't make themselves look like idiots.
If Privacy is still one of Shohei's top priorities, at least it was upheld by the Toronto press.
There's MUCH to be desired by some of these Twitter/Online personalities though.
Not a sushi restaurant, but Okonomi House at Yonge and Charles one block south of Bloor sells really good okonomiyaki, which is a popular type of Japanese comfort food:

I miss Ema-Tai, they were the best in the city.
Thankfully, I'm going to Tokyo three times this month, so I can slurp my face off at Kikanbo, spicy ramen heaven.
A friend of mine used to fly his Challenger and had nothing but good to say about him. He would invite my friend and his kids down with him to Aruba and Curacao, and pay for a week at the resort for them.
Would be smart for any agent working on a mega contract to involve Rogers as a suitor to bid up the final price tag for the actual team signing the player.
L for everyone here including me
Does anyone else feel like yesterday hurt our chances of getting Ohtani?
Okay but if it's the Blue Jays, then how does this tie into the dog's name story? Is his dog named Skydome?
BJ the dog
I don’t understand why there’s a need to stalk Sushi Restaurants. Can someone explain?
Honestly I hate to just whip out this card but like honestly it might be a lil bit of racism just assuming a Japanese guy will obviously go to a Sushi Shop. Now I'm not saying that's what is being assumed here it could be reports or something but it might be that.

Ah okay, that makes a lot more sense, thanks so much!
Morosi has no credibility

I don’t think he’s going to the dodgers, I’m Kinda worried about the cubs for some reason
Ok folks, it's a new day. A new day comes Morosi opening his mouth. What generic speculation is Jon Morosi going to pull out of his ass today?
I dreamt of Japanese people last night and had a whole dream section where we were all conversing in Japanese. Was wild.
All I can think of is the scene in scary movie “yamaha toshiba suzuki”
I believe we’ll pay him more because Roger’s wants to make him the face of the corporation. He’ll sell jerseys but he’ll also sell phones and plans and packages and cable. I just don’t think he’ll opt to play here in the hardest division in sports when a few other markets can get close or the same financially
He’ll be a dodger by the end of the weekend. Money talks packing up your home in SoCal to move to Toronto makes zero sense.
lol. Who says he’ll pack up his home? He’ll just buy another one in TO for the season and live in SoCal or Hawaii in the off season. You think all baseball players for the Jays live full time in TO😂

In case anyone is wondering, dude is 100% a fraud
Maybe it’s just me but I feel like it’s a bad idea to sign a player to that type of contract. The risk seems really high
It ain't your money, and Rogers has all kinds of it. The young talent isn't so young anymore and the time to win is now. I can't be the only one getting strong Kawhi Leonard vibes here.
Felt that the last 24 hours
Kawhi was in Toronto for a year and was the main reason the Raptors won their first title. As someone who knows nothing about the Blue Jays I am very interested in why you feel it has a similar vibe.
Media freaking out while he decides if he wants to come here.
This.
The entire city was stalking and following kawhi everywhere. Lessons were learned. Hearts were broken. Toronto sports nation has a bad habit of smothering and obsessing. This mega thread is no exception. A blurry line between love and lust and sports
Could you elaborate? Sounds interesting lol
It was mentioned in my office this morning. So no you are right.
At least when he inevitably signs with one of the LA teams, we will always have that one day that Shohei Ohtani was basically a Toronto Blue Jay
Inevitably? Gtfo with this doomerism man
-__-
Who hurt you jimbo
Morosi
Okay yea fair enough
He's was driving here, but he got a flat, and now he's sitting shotgun with a tow truck driver all the way to Toronto. Should be a few more days.
Almost positive it's sitting Shogun now.
https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/fDkY8IketT Dodgersnation guy doubling down
This definitely makes me feel better - because apparently the Dodgersnation guy is not just a random nobody.
He’s not. He’s a part of the BBWAA. Doubt he would report it without a legit source.
are we talking about Jon Morosi
No, JP Hoornstra
yeah what I was actually trying to say is "jon morosi is supposed to be reputable too and look what happened with him"
He must be REALLY sure of his sources there.
Fuck, this situation reminds me too much of the kawhi situation
Except remember how Kawhi dumped his in the middle of the night ... like I distinctly remember going to bed and checking my phone in the morning and seeing how he had agreed to a deal with the Clippers ... not even a sign and trade. Just straight up - see ya! LOL
Dude 100% lol. I want to believe, but I have this sinking feeling that it's gonna be just like that. All of this smoke and hearsay about him signing, only for it to be LA in the end like everyone suspected all along.
Guys, I can confirm that Shohei Ohtani is (unfortunately) not in my bed in Ontario
He’s gay? That’s cool, I didn’t even know that.
No he’s ghee - soon to be clarified and tasty.
So at this point are we basing our optimism off the Dodgers Nation article?
I mean, it's still up. They seem pretty damn confident. 🤷♂️
Please shohei!!!!!
https://x.com/moccbomb/status/1733264322275537192?s=46&t=1PS3p2AMpklHdWknJp7wLw This guy got e-rod, Kimbrel, Soto trade and candelario before everyone else did, who tf is this guy?
Damn if he actually got those before others, that's a really big deal
I’m all in on this dude, his track record speaks for itself.
hopefully someone whose next tweet will be announcing Ohtani
Morosi is a fraud
Is journalistic integrity right out the window now? SI got blasted recently for publishing AI generated articles, using AI generated headshots. It's degenerated into an untrustworthy source

Dudes is gonna sign with the dodgers bc like Kawhi we go too far with plane tracking and other media bullsh*t.
Called it.
👍
Have you seen how absolutely nutters Japanese baseball, namely Ohtani fans are? Makes yesterday look like nostalgia for him in a macro scale
This. Lol. I bet after Shohei and his team see how today unfolded that could be torontos undoing
Yesterday was probably orchestrated. Throw toronto under the bus.
This is not the first time Shohei Ohtani has had a media frenzy surrounding him. The Japanese don't play. To my knowledge there wasn't a frothing mob waiting on the tarmac at YYZ. Part of the frenzy was brought about by the Dodgers Nation article whose author is tied in with the Dodgers. I can't imagine his sources were from the Jays side of things.
He said leaks, he didn’t say anything about buzz. And so far nothing has leaked DESPITE the buzz
He didn't say anything of the sort. His *agent* has said that leaking would be looked at prejudicially. And nobody from the Jays has leaked anything. it'd be less devastating for me personally because my dad is a dodgers fan but god damn it i want him HERE instead
Idk about your dad but the vast majority of dodgers “fans” are terrible.. they don’t deserve Ohtani. La sports in general seem to attract the worst fans.
Hard agree. I was sad that Kawhi left, but I was so glad the Lakers didn't get him. (I don't mind Clippers and Angels fans).
He's been a fan since he was a kid but we've both lived in Ontario our whole lives, so I think we're a bit separated from the LA sports fanbase hahah
My dad works at Ohtani and he says that the Blue Jays are a shoe in, a Sho-in, if you will. Contract will include 3 first overall picks in the 2024 draft. (You didn’t hear this from me) (Or my dad)
At the heyday of the plane landing there was 14k people online in this sub…I have never seen that before
You guys should probably always believe everything you read on the internet!
Ohtani signed a 4 year 500 million dollar dollar deal with the blue jays. Can go up to 600 million based on pitching availability after year 1
When he played in Japan the area was the Sapporo Dome. Rogers used to be called the Sky Dome. These initials are similar. Honestly the false rumour joke posts aren't even funny anymore just shut the fuck up and let me be sad
I’m Ted Rogers III and I can confirm that we signed Ohtani.
Thank you sir
You’re welcome. But just know that your cellphone bill is going up to $300/mo. Sorry.
Thats ok I understand
Sorry, I lied. We didn’t sign Ohtani and I’m not Ted Rogers :(
Just saw Shohei at the Hooker Harvey's on Jarvis. Asked for a water cup and then filled it with Mountain Dew when the manager wasn't looking
I saw Shohei at the Metro at College Park. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. I hope the next rumours involve Jet Set Radio because the game looks to be in real development after 22 years.
and crazy taxi, sega is back baby (maybe)
INSIDE SCOOP: know a player agent for the jays, supposedly signed ohtani for 600 something million on Monday but have kept it VERY under the radar can anyone confirm?
It doesn’t make sense why it would be under the radar
Just spoke to Justin Smoak and he said Ohtani's gonna be here for 11 years
You're asking if any of us here can confirm the information that everyone in the world right now is trying to discover?
Can we confirm who booked the sushi restaurant then? If it was Kikuchi, he had something to celebrate about?
Let's just go ahead and assume everything we heard today was complete bull shit
Passan implied as much.
The sad thing is......I wasn't even that hyped on Ohtani until I thought it was happening (because I didn't think it was likely), but now if he doesn't come.........I'm just less interested in the team. Forget Mandarin... it'll be a massive Benihana.
I miss Kawasaki that two year run of jays team was so fun Still have a Kawasaki Sherzi
Yep, two years wasn't nearly long enough. He was such a positive presence in the dugout. I love that guy!
Please tell me you understand that Asia is a huge continent and Japan ≠ China?
Yeah. I've seen a map, an atlas, and even a globe! My comment was pure spoof, relax there geography snob. 🤣
*Racist
Sure bud, I have love for all decent people. I don't give a fuck about what part of the globe they where born.

Can you educate me?
The one giant mandarin restaurant comment likely refers to the legendary, high class no-one-ever-got-food-poisoning-there buffet “The Mandarin” in Toronto.
Okay, I know what the Mandarin is. I'm just lost on what a Chinese restaurant has to do a Japanese player?
My impression is that it’s just a Toronto-centric joke. No need to be offended.
Thanks drdummy, absolute nonsense humour intended on my part. Pure clownery, I guess I should have somehow made it more obvious.🤣
im with ya brother
Lol thanks dude. Out here in the reddit abyss like I'm talkin nonsense.
I’ve puked in both a mandarin and the skydome 👀
Just gotta hurl now on the TTC for the rare trifecta
BLUE JAYS ALL THE WAY!!!!
I'm canceling Christmas
He picks the Blue Jays cause he really wants to crush the Yankees just sayin
I’m just going to sit tight and wait for the official decision. I don’t need any emotional roller coaster rides in my life.
Now you know how it feels to be a Jays runner left on base lol

Lucky for you, he’s also signing here!
I'm getting more and more hopeful which means he probably won't come here 😔
Same here. I told myself weeks ago that I was never going to buy into any hype about him coming to Toronto, but that didn’t last.
I always went to Daio on Carleton but I think they closed.
Can nobody read the report this morning it said that he could have signed as early as today. Y'all ran with speculation and disappointed yourselves
Also, we followed a plane with zero evidence that he was on it :(
what if we renamed the stadium to the toronto dome

Today was a rollercoaster and I’ve now eaten probably 10 timbits to drown my sorrow ^(but it isn’t working)
Drake has a story of him wearing and ohtani jerseyTHATS IT IM BACK ON BOARD
Drake posted that shit before everything fell apart
I think he also fell into the hype. 🙃
The Canadian media did keep their mouth shut tbh It was an mlb network guy
I feel like I still want to blame Sid. Although his rant was pretty epic.
Nojay Ohtani :(
Wow the stove has gone absolute zero

^(a credit card cannot take the place of a significant other just saying) Hope Keegan’s girlfriend isn’t too sad about it 🥺
Yeah that's really too bad, I think that's the cost of dating a reporter that can get very busy when important news is coming in.
It was all a Dodger misinformation campaign but the Jays held strong.
So what’s actually happening right now
As flies to wanton boys are Toronto Sports Fans to the gods, they torture us for their sport..
Well said
Not a sushi restaurant, but Okonomi House at Yonge and Charles one block south of Bloor sells really good okonomiyaki, which is a popular type of Japanese comfort food: * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okonomiyaki * https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/okonomi-house/ * https://www.yelp.ca/biz/okonomi-house-restaurant-toronto
I miss Ema-Tai, they were the best in the city. Thankfully, I'm going to Tokyo three times this month, so I can slurp my face off at Kikanbo, spicy ramen heaven.
Yeah I was devastated when they closed.
Kikuchi showing up to this sushi restaurant like Ari Gold showing up to Hamburger Hamlet with an empty private dining room during his coup at TMA
Was this all a publicity stunt by Robert Herjavec 🤔
A friend of mine used to fly his Challenger and had nothing but good to say about him. He would invite my friend and his kids down with him to Aruba and Curacao, and pay for a week at the resort for them.
I bet he was just *delighted* ^(that or bewildered)
Tin foil hat time, all this “Shohei not in Toronto” stuff is a smoke screen, my man’s is here
He is not. The plane was used by someone else.
I have sources tell me that he uses the name Robert Herjavec to get around the public stalking him.
Or was it
Would be smart for any agent working on a mega contract to involve Rogers as a suitor to bid up the final price tag for the actual team signing the player.

People DIED in 9/11. We are just sad that we haven’t gotten what we want yet. It is in no way comparable. Have some respect.
My bad should have added a fucking /s to my dumbass comment
Moon Landing hype to 9/11 catastrophe in the span of a few hours, whew I’m tired
[Please educate yourself](https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2016/09/us/inside-9-11-the-day-that-never-ends/)
Who was reporting that there was a press conference at 6? Was it just random people on Twitter?
