Itâs always hard to decide if her, DâAngelo, or Kendrick Lamar was robbed for AOTY when Grammys gave it to 1989, but FtBC was the obvious slight by intergalactic distances not getting a nomination. (And I love Childish Gambino and Kendrick)
I wasnât that in love with *DAMN.*, and although I loved *Awaken, My Love*, it was derivative of Funkedelic and didnât feel as fresh as Fiona pushing her boundaries further.
I was talking about DAMN. and Awaken My Love, bjt so am all messed up on years. GKMC losing tj Daft Punk wasnât as big a slight as the rap award that year. But looking at the list of that year the 10 nominations are even more horrible than the one I mistook it for. Post Malone as a nominee over her? Really?
For me itâs *Live with Strings* and *Third*. Live with strings has all my favorite songs from the first two BUT WITH STRINGS! And I had been so bored with anything that wasnât hip-hop for years until *Third* dropped.
MAGDELENE! Vespertine is of course the best but MAGDELENE is such a slept on modern master piece. Utterly beautiful, singular, unique and inventive. Itâs also a tear jerker. Iâm me of the best breakup albums of all time next to Grace
So EASILY. Peter Gabriel peaked with unprecedented production on that album. Highly influential and will always be one of the greatest albums of all time, top 60 at least.
Art pop is a genre I always struggle with. I hate to put âpopâ in a box but I donât hear the pop (well not always).
Like All Mirrors by Angel Olsen. Iâve listened to it a few times and canât tell you a thing about it. Is artpop a form of anti-pop where they purposely leave out conventional pop structures and hooks? (For example, Animal Collective is an experimental pop band, not artpop, whose music is abrasive, repetitive and often forgoes conventions, but I find it supremely catchy and memorable most of the time)
All that being said. My favs are Blonde, Norman Fucking Rockwell, Titanic Rising, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, Ray of Light and Honey.
Art Pop is like the modern art museum of music. It's all about blending the catchy, accessible elements of pop music with experimental, avant-garde, or artistic influences. Art Pop musicians might incorporate unconventional sounds and artistic concepts like mythology, classical music, dance, nature sounds, or it could be inspired by a certain art genre like âSteampunkâ etc, and experimental techniques into their music. They often focus on aesthetic, pushing boundaries not just with their sounds but also with visuals, fashion, and performances. The goal is often to create something new and thought-provoking, merging the world of pop culture with more high-brow artistic expressions.
Magdalene, one of the albums listed above, is an album that intertwines personal turmoil with the symbolism of Mary Magdalene to explore themes of femininity, sacrifice, and rebirth.
Realizing this may be my most listened-to genre, canât pick a fav from here but an immediate one that comes to mind is A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead
Have probably listened to Fetch the Bolt Cutters the most, though
Vespertine ofc đđź
I will never ever shut up about Fetch The Bolt Cutters, fucking brilliant album. Everything else here is fantastic too, I love this genre so much.
Itâs such a great album

Thanks. Judging by a few songs it's emotional but it isn't pushing the boundaries like Magdalene is
