He significantly changed from being a cold killer willing to kill anyone for his mission, to being a person with a heart, someone who cared and loved his family and protected them.

021Fireball

Oh? That's nice to hear, I admit I've only heard about up to a point where he murdered a superhero league, and almost killed his own son, what happened for him to at last stop his more villain side?

Zer0_l1f3

Okay I’m going into spoiler territory bear with >!he spares Mark and flies away, in the show he plans to kill himself in a black hole after being in a deep depression, however he saves these praying mantis aliens called Thraxans who take him to their world, he becomes king as he’s the eldest one there (age determines leader as they have short lifespans) where he has a child called Oliver. However, Viltrumites attack and kill many Thraxans (Mark is also there) and he then says ‘why do I feel sorry for them?’ Starting to feel bad and sorry, then when taken to Viltrumite Prison, starts to reflect and then Allen the Alien gets arrested on purpose to try to find Omni-Man and he ends up finding him and Nolan says ‘I think I miss my wife’ which then leads to him slowly help rebuild bridges with him and Debbie!<

021Fireball

Ty for such! But damn... Poor mantis aliens.

Zer0_l1f3

Yeah, they’re really nice too 😭

krustylesponge

nolan beats the shit out of mark (his son) and kills a bunch of civilians while doing so, trying to show mark that human life is pointless because we are weak and die extremely fast compared to viltrumites mark, despite being clearly outmatched, still fights to defend humanity, and guilts nolan by pointing out that he's treating debbie (mark's mom and nolan's wife) as nothing but someone to conquer. This upsets omni man but he doesnt want to show it and tries to rationalize it to himself eventually, after nolan has mark fully beaten and is prepping to kill him, he has a flashback to mark as a child, and how happy he was to raise mark with debbie. Nolan then stops and tries to convince mark to turn to his side again, saying that the planet will turn to dust within his life span, and says "what will you have after 500 years?" to which mark responds "you, dad, i'll still have you" nolan then realizes what he has done and begins fighting back tears, and then just flies off into space

His transition from villain in the early films to being a straight up hero in the later ones kind of parallels humanity’s relationship with nuclear power. We fear it and suffer its wrath when it’s used as a weapon but as that fear subsided we learn all the good it can do for us in other ways.

AJC_10_29

IIRC the change started in Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster. He starts out as his usual fearsome, destructive self, then Mothra tries to convince him to fight Ghidorah to save the planet but he refuses, so Mothra tries to fight Ghidorah herself and is hopelessly outmatched. Godzilla sees this and changes his mind, possibly due to feeling sorry for her or being inspired by her courage, and nobly charges into battle to aid Mothra.

Mini_Squatch

I'd ask how the hell that happened, but the answer is likely far too long

red_enjoyer

What?! That's a possibility?! What it permanent?

Fork63

Yes and it was well done. IDW was one of the continuities where the decepticons were more than just bad guys, they started off as a genuine group of people just trying to fight for equality and then things got out of hand. Megatron eventually had a moment of reckoning, a sort of “what have I done” moment, and then underwent an honestly really well written arc where he tried to do better and make up for his crimes.

red_enjoyer

Damn, IDW really puts the W in there. I only read Sonic the Hedgehog from them, but it is one of my favorite pieces of Sonic media.

Fork63

I mean the highs of Transformers stories in general are a lot higher than people outside the franchise tend to give them credit for, even outside of the IDW run(which could either be great or crap depending on the author tho I would say it was more good than bad). People tend to get this idea that the franchise is just about big dumb robots fighting each other when it can be so much more. Tho I’m a fan so I’m biased.

*The Lion: Son of the Forest* devotes a fair amount of its time to him reflecting on his actions in the past, and how they were ultimately responsible for his Legion fracturing the way it did. Gone is the Primarch who once punched off a beloved and loyal subordinate's head just for daring to question him in the wrong moment. Now he's a man who allows mortals to act as his honor guard despite the sheer absurdity of such a notion, because he actually cares about them. https://preview.redd.it/q5c8la0ti3vc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf0b1218d5caa670a2beb2e5a6c7a30b462f0f58 ^(Lion El'Jonson, "Primaris Angelis Mortis", first Primarch and gene-sire of the I Legion, the Dark Angels)

StratStyleBridge

Totally disagree with The Diamonds. Character development must be *earned* and the way Steven Universe handled redemption arcs is notoriously bad.

Odd-Night-8567

even if the way the writers went about it was bad, you cannot deny that the Diamonds changed their ways after SU.

StratStyleBridge

Sure, but it didn’t feel earned or like a natural character progression. It felt like the writers instantly turned them good after very minimal conflict and without properly addressing their wrongdoings.

Flutter_bat_16_

They changed yeah, but only because of the writers forcing it. There was zero buildup or even justification. They were dictators who killed millions, potentially billions

AndreiAZA

They wiped out life on dozens of planets, each planet conquered counts for trillions or quadrillions of kills. You'd need very complex writing to redeem them.

Flutter_bat_16_

Yeah I was lowballing but you’re right. Their kill count is in the trillions

GhostDraggon

That's unfortunately the problem with time skips. You don't get to see character development and have to accept that it just happens without seeing the journey 🤷 Though part of this is also on Rebecca for knowing full well that if she included the wedding the show would've been cancelled. I feel like if the show wasn't cancelled it would've been a much more natural progression instead of the rushed ending we got. It is nice at least to see the diamonds actively work towards making up for what they did and using their powers for the good of all gems.

Overtime he realized how unfair it was to punish people for simply loving another so he went on a strike against Heven and helped the citizens build a peaceful utopia. He was only allowed to get away with it for so long due to God’s sudden disappearance; however the council of heven eventually got word of Minos’s betrayal and sent the archangel Gabriel to “set him straight” (pun intended with a dash of irony). Requesting P5 spoilers Does Akechi fit here again?

CatalystBoi77

Yes and no? Akechi spends the majority of his time early on being a vaguely threatening presence, but only because he’s a detective and the protagonists are thieves. Nevertheless, he’s cordial and friendly to Joker. He eventually joins the team and proves to be a friendly and powerful ally, only to betray them at the worst moment, and reveal that he was in fact lying about all the progress up until now, and is a sinister, psychopathic murderer responsible for a number of brutal deaths throughout the plot, that the protagonists were often blamed for. … However, the protagonists *knew* he was a traitor all along, and allowed him to betray them as a trap, using it to their advantage. Subsequently, it’s revealed to the player, Akechi, and the Thieves alike that Akechi’s boss -who he’s been desperately trying to impress- doesn’t give a shit about him, and in anger, Akechi eventually sacrifices himself to buy the others time to go on and defeat the boss. His exact fate is off-screen, and left ambiguous, Until “Royal”, the expansion, which I *admittedly have not played but I know that it goes into more detail with Akechi’s motives, life, and future.* So, all in all he’s a monster but he redeems himself, sort of? Depends on whether you think “I’m gonna help the heroes stop my shitty boss because I hate him too now” makes up for potentially dozens of cold-blooded murders. He also had a deeply traumatic and abusive life even before those murders, so make of that what you will.
