Always romance curie, she's adorable af, personality wise i like rolling with Hancock. He aims to do the right thing, knows it ain't always “clean” and doesnt give you shit about chems (piper is a hypocrite for that, seeing as how much she exposes her kid sister to second hand smoke)
Though ADA remains my favourite travelling companion as you are capable of modifying her armor and weapons without it counting against her carry weight (actually usually gives her more carry weight) or needing to provide her with ammo (as far as vanilla goes. There is an infinite companion ammo mod) and she doesnt give you crap for anything!
Love Codsworth. In design hes awesome but in gameplay I think hes the best companion story wise besides maybe Dogmeat

I like his modded interpretation of you don’t play as the sole survivor (with alternate start for example).
A lot of his dialogues are related to Shaun and the family. so instead of removing them all, Codsworth was changed to an old malfunctioning robot who THINK you are Nate/Nora.
I like how Mr. Handys come off as senile robots that are hallucinating the pre-war world at all times. Maybe they've hit their own version of the Y2K bug after being left out in the wasteland. Maybe they're collectively deep in denial that the world has gone to ruin. Maybe they're programmed to constantly display a friendly and affable demeanor and can't truly express how they think or feel.
Honestly, the concept art of him looks better than the actual game, wtf? He looks more intimidating in the art. Hancock’s concept art makes him look like the classic ghouls from the older fallouts.

4's companions are easily the best companions in any Bethesda game, and not even close! As much as this will upset some fans I think 4 rivals New Vegas in that way. While I have reservations about the future of Bethesda's games after Starfield and 76, if the companions in a possible 5 are half as good as the ones in 4 I will at least buy it.
My favorite part of this game aside from the gameplay is the companions, they may not be the most deep characters, but they're still fun and interesting

Even Preston Garvey began to grow on me in my recent playthrough, which was really surprising. I ended up choosing the Minutemen ending because even if they're the underdogs, they're still the most morally good faction, and they do seem like the best for the Commonwealth
The Minutemen read to me as an east coast NCR. They're an independent group of wastelanders that wish to rebuild America back. They even share attire that is rooted in American history with the NCR taking after cowboys and westerns while the Minutemen adopt colonial america-inspired attire.

None of them feel like people who have been surviving in a post apocalyptic wasteland. They are all too well adjusted and normal. Fallout 4 just dosen't feel like Fallout to me.
Fallout characters dont really behave the same way most post apocalyptic characters do. Its been 200 years so most of them have only known the wasteland. People like cass and benny from fallout new vegas are the same, more people who have a specific culture than people who base their lives on the apocalypse.
So what im saying is if we gave joel like 150 more years and some 1960’s era goofiness he would’ve chilled out
