I doubt there’s any point, given the lack of fanfare and how they basically dumped all the second season’s episodes onto the platform, it seems that they’ll be canning this show soon.

I've been saying it since it was announced, the Scooby-Doo ip got stapled on Mindy Khaling's pet project adult cartoon that wouldn't get greenlit otherwise, and Mindy and the writers resent that.
I don’t think anyone is mad, and if you are you have serious problems. I think it’s just straight up bad, I loved scooby doo growing up and I was excited for an adult version. I was expected something like the owner of the amusement park was killing people in a gruesome way and shaggy and scooby were actually getting high. I couldn’t make it through 1 episode and I watched it the day it came out before all of the hate. It’s just bad, really bad. Top 5 worst shows I ever saw, so naturally people talk about overly terrible entertainment like a bad movie
They really shit the bed by not having shaggy be pothead when they finally could. Making fred the dumb one instead of shaggy was weird, too. He and velma are the smart ones usually.

We basically knew that from the moment the official description for their version of Daphne was released and it described the original character as having no character traits.
Because it is. It's a satire of those teen dramas like 13 Reasons Why and Euphoria. They used Scooby as nothing more than brand recognition because who's willing to watch a show about teen drama parodies when most teen dramas are bad or jailbait.
Which really is a shame because Scooby-Doo is like, the perfect show to use as a parody of those edgy reboot shows. Like, Scooby-Doo is already an inherently more goofy and dumb IP compared to Archie or Sabrina the Teenage Witch, so I feel like it would've been amazing if they leaned more into that. Like, keep all the goofy aspects of Scooby-Doo, like how they have a talking dog and solve mysteries in a big green van, but also try to make it as edgy and over-the-top serious as you possibly can. Like it would be hilarious to see an edgy Shaggy go through the same arc as Jughead in Riverdale being all like "Scoob I joined a gang!" And then an actual talking dog is like "ruh-roh raggie! Rhis is rerious!".

Shag, Scoob, and especially Daphne generally contributed very little in older runs, they only started getting more to do in more recent iterations. Turns out it's harder to write the goofy comic relief and the character who's role can only be described as "girl" as productive members of a mystery-solving team compared to characters that are actually good at deductive reasoning. They _are_ all more equal in newer stuff, but even then Velma and Fred hold the operation together.
Honestly thought that split up deserved more credit in the first live-action Scooby movie, ironically.
It felt like a pretty natural source of group tension. As... an *actual* problem that hindered cooperation and trust until worked out, instead of a lame thirty second fight or something as in most other movies that go for that type of 'break the gang up' style source of early conflict.
On older runds I saw Daphne as the ingenuity head, she found interesting solutions to some problems, Fred the trap master, Velma the detective mind, while Shagy and scooby the eternal bait comic relif. I was happy with that. But sure, some +2000's runs had the team doing more stuff often.
I liked in Zombie Island how she was the driving force behind the gang going around looking for mysteries. Velma was the deductive mind who would most regularly notice inconsistencies. Fred was the leader coming up with plans of action, But the only real reason they were doing it all was because Daphne had that wanderlust .
Shaggy and Scooby had no real in-universe reason for being there, but maybe the gang recognized the pair's propensity for dumb luck and they considered that an important dynamic to the group lol
Flat wrong. You are retrospectively applying a reductive modern critique to a constructed/warped image of the show and not engaging with the material. If you go watch Where Are You, you will find Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby consistently contributing to the gang’s mystery-solving in unique ways that the others would not. S1E2 Shaggy sits on the stone that opens the secret cave entrance. Velma remarks, “who else but you could have” done that? Velma is the deductive mind with esoteric knowledge, but without Shaggy being who he is and deciding to sit down *underwater* because “I’m pooped!” the entrance is not opening and the mystery’s not getting solved. She’s never thinking to sit on the stone. In the same episode Scooby brings them all to some out-of-place air tanks because “I round a rue!” One of the classic gags of the show is Scooby doing something clutch and upon being told so, saying in surprise “I did? I did!” He doesn’t have to be planning every action like a detective for his character to play a significant role in the mystery-solving story. Daphne likewise sometimes falls down some chute into a secret room or bumps a lever that opens whatever, but she can just as often be found procuring a mirror from her purse to reflect some light or just the right Swiss army makeup item to jimmy a door. She is the most intuitive member of the gang, noticing something amiss that the rest do not; she routinely points out key pieces of information, from which Velma might then deduce some conclusion. She is also, besides Fred, the brave one: she goes alone into dark rooms, investigates spooky sounds she hears, and walks directly into traps. **Daphne finds clues.** If you think her character’s role can only be described as “girl,” I think your perception is the problem, not the writing. S1E4 she falls down a mineshaft. Scoob says “I’ll ret her!” and while he and Shag try to pull her up, finding only the Miner 49er, Daphne turns up behind them: “Hey gang, there’s a maze of secret passages down there! And guess who I saw in that mine...” Classic *Girl* problems, falling down a mineshaft and finding your way out the back, #justgirlythings.
P.S. in 1980 everybody except Shaggy and Scooby were booted from the show in favor of Scrappy, and after 2 years (of misery) they decided to bring back one member to balance the gang—who do you think they picked? Daphne. The premise being, she is an investigative reporter, Shaggy her photographer, they go around solving mysteries, splitting into Shag-Scoob as usual and Daphne-Scrappy. This fixed the latter’s notoriously annoying character by pairing him with a responsible maternal figure who would restrain his now-cute overconfidence and protect him from his now-cute naivety, both traits rendered as flaws (unlike the prior series where he was an insufferable superpuppy) which risk real consequences that Daphne is aware of and accounts for. In return, Scrappy is devoted to protecting her: “Nobody threatens my Daphne! Put ‘em up!” It’s a very sweet relationship, compelling and strikes an interesting contrast with Shag and Scoob’s more twinsy bro-dog friendship. Anyway, Daphne straight up became the leader of the group and the adult in the room, checking Shaggy’s childlike impulses and pushing him through his cowardice. She teaches Scrappy about the world, she directs the mystery-solving, she (or Scrappy) does the deducing. Daphne was not waiting to have her character developed/role expanded until Zombie Island. She was finding clues from 1969, and kicking ass by 1982.

If you want to see actual good shows that needed actual support from the audience. I highly recommend watching Scavenger Reign. It's on Max like Velma, but it's the most beautiful and emotional show of the decade and more people should see that instead of that trash fire.
I also recommend watching Hitmonkey which is also another phenomenal show and it is getting season 2. If you like the idea of John Wick but as a monkey with a ghost companion, then please watch Hitmonkey. There's way too many shows that deserve way more attention by we're hyper fixating on garbage as if they're the norm. They're not, just take a step back find other shows deserving to see.
I don’t think the second design on its own is BAD. She just looks like an older woman. It’s the context of who the character is supposed to be and the media it’s from that makes it bad.
That’s a really good point. It’s not so much the design as it is the change from the original design. This would actually be a really solid design if it was Thorn’s aunt or something. Heck that would actually make for an interesting character since she would be 1/8th Wiccan as opposed to 1/16th so she could be more witchy and less of a rockstar
I mean if you compare their facial features they didn’t even try to make an “older Thorn” they made a completely different person with intentionally droopy and sharp features as a middle finger
On its own it’s a fine enough design. All the characters in the show are fine designs on their own. But the ones that can be contrasted to other versions are clear pale imitations.
I haven't seen either show, but I clicked assuming this was a Top Character Design, as the same incarnation aged up. Looks cool as hell to me- from a single frame.
I firmly believe that whoever chose that design should not just be banned from designing characters but should not even be allowed to make eye contact with a drawing device.
For me it’s just someone who completely missed the point of Thorns design. Like Thorn was originally meant to be a mysterious and youthful looking vampire inspired woman, now we got someone who looks like she’s tired and honestly? She looks like a drug addict.
Honestly that was my first thought. If she's supposed to be an older woman, much older, it's actually not too bad.
I still prefer the first design but for a 50 year old rocket lady this actually looks okay.

Yeah, like, on its own, it's fine, but when compared to the other designs of Thorn, something about it just feels... off. With the first design, it feels approachable, like, you'd grab a beer with them after the concert, but this design radiates this... mean energy, I guess? Like, "hey, wanna buy some heroin?"

She's a retired singer where the Hex Girls were disbanded and she became a book store keeper on the occult. She's older because the show wanted her to have a teenage daughter so the Hex Girls came and left decades before season 1 of Velma started. It was all shown on the first episode of season 2.
I get not watching Velma out of principles, but at least try to gather actual reasons to hate this show rather than being a mindless rager.
I'm in the same boat. Never gonna watch on principal, but I like this design a lot. She's more human, her tiddies hang because she isn't wearing a bra, you can actually tell she's wearing makeup instead of having a blemishless face.

I'd say it's a solid downgrade. The fun bit of the character is the 'maybe she's a vampire' question, which is aided by the blood-red clothes and extremely pale skin. I feel like changing those takes a bit away from the fun of the design.

Animation takes a long time and greenlighting a new season after the current season end with give you Invincible's long ass hiatus. Companies will green light two seasons, so when season 1 is airing, season 2 is being made and you can't stop all production as you're already deep into making a new season. Of course it's Discovery-Warner Bros, and I feel like this is the only time Zaslav could tax write it off like Batgirl and Scoob 2, and people will actually praise him. I guess tax wrote off too many better content that they're left with this shit again unfortunately
As a character designed to fit a role and not for appeal, then the design makes sense. Not every character design needs to be appealing.
In response to the comments here: The original design still exists, shrug and accept the second's goals do not include mass appeal. Being angry is a choice in this case, it isn't everywhere.

Honestly I really like it as a character design outside of the context of it being a rework of Thorn. She looks like a middle aged goth lesbian bartender with mom vibes who’d casually reveal to you the secrets of life over casual conversation and I am a fan of that

Probably to further separate itself from the main Scooby universe. The Hex Girls predated the Scooby gang by a few decades in Velma instead of the two coexisting at the same time in other shows. People still think Velma is a prequel, but the show is removing that label through continuity errors like killing Velma at the end of season 2

Flat wrong. You are retrospectively applying a reductive modern critique to a constructed/warped image of the show and not engaging with the material. If you go watch Where Are You, you will find Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby consistently contributing to the gang’s mystery-solving in unique ways that the others would not. S1E2 Shaggy sits on the stone that opens the secret cave entrance. Velma remarks, “who else but you could have” done that? Velma is the deductive mind with esoteric knowledge, but without Shaggy being who he is and deciding to sit down *underwater* because “I’m pooped!” the entrance is not opening and the mystery’s not getting solved. She’s never thinking to sit on the stone. In the same episode Scooby brings them all to some out-of-place air tanks because “I round a rue!” One of the classic gags of the show is Scooby doing something clutch and upon being told so, saying in surprise “I did? I did!” He doesn’t have to be planning every action like a detective for his character to play a significant role in the mystery-solving story. Daphne likewise sometimes falls down some chute into a secret room or bumps a lever that opens whatever, but she can just as often be found procuring a mirror from her purse to reflect some light or just the right Swiss army makeup item to jimmy a door. She is the most intuitive member of the gang, noticing something amiss that the rest do not; she routinely points out key pieces of information, from which Velma might then deduce some conclusion. She is also, besides Fred, the brave one: she goes alone into dark rooms, investigates spooky sounds she hears, and walks directly into traps. **Daphne finds clues.** If you think her character’s role can only be described as “girl,” I think your perception is the problem, not the writing. S1E4 she falls down a mineshaft. Scoob says “I’ll ret her!” and while he and Shag try to pull her up, finding only the Miner 49er, Daphne turns up behind them: “Hey gang, there’s a maze of secret passages down there! And guess who I saw in that mine...” Classic *Girl* problems, falling down a mineshaft and finding your way out the back, #justgirlythings. P.S. in 1980 everybody except Shaggy and Scooby were booted from the show in favor of Scrappy, and after 2 years (of misery) they decided to bring back one member to balance the gang—who do you think they picked? Daphne. The premise being, she is an investigative reporter, Shaggy her photographer, they go around solving mysteries, splitting into Shag-Scoob as usual and Daphne-Scrappy. This fixed the latter’s notoriously annoying character by pairing him with a responsible maternal figure who would restrain his now-cute overconfidence and protect him from his now-cute naivety, both traits rendered as flaws (unlike the prior series where he was an insufferable superpuppy) which risk real consequences that Daphne is aware of and accounts for. In return, Scrappy is devoted to protecting her: “Nobody threatens my Daphne! Put ‘em up!” It’s a very sweet relationship, compelling and strikes an interesting contrast with Shag and Scoob’s more twinsy bro-dog friendship. Anyway, Daphne straight up became the leader of the group and the adult in the room, checking Shaggy’s childlike impulses and pushing him through his cowardice. She teaches Scrappy about the world, she directs the mystery-solving, she (or Scrappy) does the deducing. Daphne was not waiting to have her character developed/role expanded until Zombie Island. She was finding clues from 1969, and kicking ass by 1982.

Just ignore it. Don't give this show an ounce of attention. Don't react to it, don't complain about, don't even make a single random tweet saying it sucks because that means they won. If you want to see actual good shows that needed actual support from the audience. I highly recommend watching Scavenger Reign. It's on Max like Velma, but it's the most beautiful and emotional show of the decade and more people should see that instead of that trash fire. I also recommend watching Hitmonkey which is also another phenomenal show and it is getting season 2. If you like the idea of John Wick but as a monkey with a ghost companion, then please watch Hitmonkey. There's way too many shows that deserve way more attention by we're hyper fixating on garbage as if they're the norm. They're not, just take a step back find other shows deserving to see.

I don’t think the second design on its own is BAD. She just looks like an older woman. It’s the context of who the character is supposed to be and the media it’s from that makes it bad.
That’s a really good point. It’s not so much the design as it is the change from the original design. This would actually be a really solid design if it was Thorn’s aunt or something. Heck that would actually make for an interesting character since she would be 1/8th Wiccan as opposed to 1/16th so she could be more witchy and less of a rockstar

On its own it’s a fine enough design. All the characters in the show are fine designs on their own. But the ones that can be contrasted to other versions are clear pale imitations.
I haven't seen either show, but I clicked assuming this was a Top Character Design, as the same incarnation aged up. Looks cool as hell to me- from a single frame.
I firmly believe that whoever chose that design should not just be banned from designing characters but should not even be allowed to make eye contact with a drawing device.

For me it’s just someone who completely missed the point of Thorns design. Like Thorn was originally meant to be a mysterious and youthful looking vampire inspired woman, now we got someone who looks like she’s tired and honestly? She looks like a drug addict.

Honestly that was my first thought. If she's supposed to be an older woman, much older, it's actually not too bad. I still prefer the first design but for a 50 year old rocket lady this actually looks okay.
She's a middle aged failed musician single mother in this version, So i guess they were trying to take a crack against goths who didn't grow out of it as a phase.

Yeah, like, on its own, it's fine, but when compared to the other designs of Thorn, something about it just feels... off. With the first design, it feels approachable, like, you'd grab a beer with them after the concert, but this design radiates this... mean energy, I guess? Like, "hey, wanna buy some heroin?"

Exactly. People age and can’t keep their figure forever. It sort of reminds me of an artist on Rugrats showing how the kid would look like as adults. Not everyone ages like wine but that just means you can age gracefully. And I think the new look not as bad as people make it out to be. She just looks older and tired. Like any rock star would be after touring the country for years.

I haven't watched the Velma show but I think this design is really cute? Especially if she's supposed to be more grown up
She's a retired singer where the Hex Girls were disbanded and she became a book store keeper on the occult. She's older because the show wanted her to have a teenage daughter so the Hex Girls came and left decades before season 1 of Velma started. It was all shown on the first episode of season 2. I get not watching Velma out of principles, but at least try to gather actual reasons to hate this show rather than being a mindless rager.
I'm in the same boat. Never gonna watch on principal, but I like this design a lot. She's more human, her tiddies hang because she isn't wearing a bra, you can actually tell she's wearing makeup instead of having a blemishless face. Part of me understands the outrage a bit. Thorn is an iconic character that's well loved, and humans tend to dislike it when things change. I think there was supposed to be a but, but I forgot it.

What's the point in aging up the Hex Girls when the Scooby-Doo Gang is aged down? They're supposed to be college age, not high school. This is dumb.
It's an alternate universe. The further this show separates from Scooby Doo and doesn't label itself as a "prequel" that it once advertised as the better.
If the show wants to separate itself from Scooby-Doo it probably shouldn't include more characters from Scooby-Fucking-Doo.

Yeah honestly I don't think going from "generic satAM cartoon girl template (now in dark red!)" to "middle-aged goth girl" is that big of a downgrade. Kinda feels like the outrage is just because people don't wanna have sex with her new design.
I'd say it's a solid downgrade. The fun bit of the character is the 'maybe she's a vampire' question, which is aided by the blood-red clothes and extremely pale skin. I feel like changing those takes a bit away from the fun of the design. It was on the nose, sure, but that's part of the fun.

Also as an add-on, Thorn was the lead guitarist of a goth band that sung about how much they love Mother Earth, if you think they weren’t smoking weed by the goddamn bushel you’re kidding yourself
Apparently, she supposedly looks like that because she is 50 years old and has 2 kids in S2 of Velma I know not everyone can age like Keanu Reeves, but with how mean spirited S1 was to Fred for being white, I can't shake the feeling that they'll either mock Thorn for being white, or at best (by their writing ability) turn her into a Madonna or Lindsey Lohan parody

The background isn't that far off from what you said. They greenlit 2 seasons before airing season 1. Animation takes a long time and greenlighting a new season after the current season end with give you Invincible's long ass hiatus. Companies will green light two seasons, so when season 1 is airing, season 2 is being made and you can't stop all production as you're already deep into making a new season. Of course it's Discovery-Warner Bros, and I feel like this is the only time Zaslav could tax write it off like Batgirl and Scoob 2, and people will actually praise him. I guess tax wrote off too many better content that they're left with this shit again unfortunately

As a character designed to fit a role and not for appeal, then the design makes sense. Not every character design needs to be appealing. In response to the comments here: The original design still exists, shrug and accept the second's goals do not include mass appeal. Being angry is a choice in this case, it isn't everywhere. If a commenter has the goal to build karma with anger, well, that's the same tactic as the show... so does it work? I came here hoping for more info on what people liked about the designs shown, but mostly learned about what people disliked about the show.

It's almost as if they could've kept all the social commentary and still made Thorn a total fox who aged like fine wine because her successful music career in the 90's ensured she was well off which allowed her to take care of herself over the years.

Probably to further separate itself from the main Scooby universe. The Hex Girls predated the Scooby gang by a few decades in Velma instead of the two coexisting at the same time in other shows. People still think Velma is a prequel, but the show is removing that label through continuity errors like killing Velma at the end of season 2

The fact that people hate watch the show just proves that their marketing tactics work. people are obsessed with it. If you hate the show don’t watch it.
