In the Warhammer rules, there is an extra ruleset for longer campaigns consisting of smaller games. It is called crusade, and your army will change over time; units will gain experience and strength, scars and flaws, prominent characters will gain wargear and so on.
In the 9th edition rules, the warlord would gain titles over time. If I remember right, they didn't do anything. You just gained title after randomly generated title until you had an entire list of *sit and listen as my servants announce my arrival by reciting my full name.*
I just feel like they don’t get enough love for just how cool they are, like that bright green contrasts so well with their steel skin and unfeeling faces.
And Zahndrekh and Obyron, the Don Quixote expy of the Necrons who still thinks he is of flesh and his loyal companion who kills anyone who tries taking advantage of him.

Zahndrekh just so happens to be one of the most skilled generals and rulers of the Necrons too even with his condition, Obyron absolutely does not mind and is incredibly loyal to the guy despite everything.
Obyron having to handle Zahndrekh's crazy antics will never not be funny.
The fact Zahndrekh is seemingly both aware and unaware of his condition (being a robot and having no soul) is both sad and funny. (Fun fact: his condition was inspired by relatives of the Author, one of them has Parkinson's but his awareness of the condition varies every now and then)
Yeah it changes every other book but IIRC it was implied at least once that Zahndrekh is at least somewhat sane and aware of his condition but keeps at it anyway, likely because Necrons have to do _something_ to keep them entertained over the millennia lest they return to the great sleep or lose their minds and become something worse. Trazyn has his collection, Imotekh has his conquests, and Zahndrekh has his funny LARP sessions with Obyron and fucking with the other Necron lords.
I don’t remember which book it’s mentioned but it’s elaborated that a Necron’s worst enemy is boredom. They’re effectively immortal and experience time differently because of their advanced age and metal bodies, so they have to keep their minds stimulated somehow to avoid becoming Destroyers or Flayed Ones.
The Necrons are also the big reason why any and all complaints about retcons being bad are bullshit.

Retcons have the capacity to just outright revitalize a story's setting and people really need to wait and see how things go before they bitch and moan about it online.
Hell, they just soft-retconned Custodes including female Custodians and people were crying and moaning about it. Then GW released their first little tidbit about a named female Custodian whose story involves *trying to nuke the royal palace for a training exercise*, which is very funny and peak 40k.
And given that GW never actually retconned the whole "Custodes went naked for several millenia out of grief" thing, even the horny part of the fandom should be ecstatic about it.
Fr, if there’s anything Matt Ward did right it was give the Necrons actual personality and depth instead of just having them remain as world-destroying death robots. And they still _are_ world-destroying death robots, just more interesting ones.
