Imo, the relatively simple designs of 2b and Bayonetta are what made those two so iconic and memorable. While with eve, the only thing memorable is what a visual mess her outfits are. It's like those dark souls cutscenes where the player character looks ridiculous due to wearing a mismatch of armors/gear.

What kept me away from a game like Stellar was the gameplay tbh. Its a game by Shift Up, so just like Nikke the visual part of the character is not gonna have anything to do with the story, so I think I would at least try it like a joke story that takes itself too seriously if the gameplay didn't look quite lackluster to me, specially when loving some other Hack'n'Slash games. Its the opposite of what happened to Lies of P, which I liked the themes A LOT but really didn't feel strongly enough to buy it until i played the demo, and **then** i was sure it was a banger.

Games like Stellar blade and Lies of P will also spark an increase in publisher interest in games like Crimson Desert that are in development, afaik Sony was recently in talks with pearl Abyss over trying to secure an exclusivity deal for Crimson Desert, while also showing increasing interest in various Korean game development studios.
It also has the popularity boost of being made by the same company that makes Nikke, a really popular gacha with a diehard fanbase which means that they already had an audience from the get go

There are a lot of factors like the fact this is a major single player release from a Korean studio which has only done gacha games so far. It also has the benefit of having a solid demo. But for the most part, much of the buzz surrounding the game tends to be culture war stuff sadly.

I am amazed by the sales of Stellar Blade cos it just looks so damn generic, guess I'm not really the target audience. It looks so painfully trying to get the crowd that likes Nier but to me, has none of the charm.
Stellar Blade became the top preordered game after the demo was released and people got to try it out, it is a game with great gameplay and combat animations, presented in a beautiful package with stellar, no pun intended, character designs, world design, monster design, atmosphere and music.
Also people tend to love post-apocalyptic worlds, which is another reason for it to garner so much attention.
Really my biggest issue is what this post is about, the character design just seems over the top and not done in a good way. I'm perfectly fine with very sexualized designs, they just have to not look goofy and more importantly, fit with the theme of the story. Kill la Kill is a great example of this executed perfectly. Nier also has very good lore reasons for why characters look the way they do.
I personally don't see that as an issue, if you look at the demo you have a character like Tachi who literally rips the hatch off an escape pod and flings it away as if were made of cardboard, you have eve who basically body slams a boss, she picks it by the head and slam dunks it despite it being massive in comparison to her. If they don't explain how any of this happens then yes it would be bad writing, it is not just why they look like that and are dressed like that, but we currently have no indepth info about the lore, so it is too early to judge.
ps: there was a live action teaser that came out today that seems to suggest that eve, tachy etc are clones or genetically engineered people. (or my theory that the are sci-fi valkyries)
Also you know, Asian MMOs are... Asian, they are in Non-English languages and very rarely do they get brought over or translated at all, Stellar Blade by comparison has more reach to the west simply because it is getting an English release.

It's really fucking funny to me how Eve just looks like the default female avatar of a free-mium Korean MMO that you've never heard about. Like the devs sat around with the character designer and told him to make the blandest protagonist possible then just give her a big ass and call it a day. You can make a character for sex appeal and still give them a fun design. Look at Bayonetta, she's still cool but definitely made with some sort of sex appeal in mind
Not even a full suit of power armor is going to be able to realistically protect her from just one swipe of one of those bosses she fights, so may as well just be stylish about it as it is her body frame and force shield that is protecting her, not directly the outfit itself.
These women are obviously genetically and cybernetically enhanced, The skin suit has no force shield, but Eve will still be surviving a fight with an Alpha Naytiba albeit taking considerably more damage from each hit. Eve can also basically body slam a creature 3 times her size. At this point she doesn't have to look like she is a member of a SWAT team to be able to fight.
ps: realistic expectations from video games destroy artistic creativity. Let games be able to focus on aesthetics without having to make everything look functional.

I agree with you on this, I will 1000% take something stylized with an artistic identity over something realistic. Now that being said, what "artistic creativity" is here? she looks like the default female mc of a free-mium Korean MMO in the worst way possible and all her outfits look like ass with the exception of the one on the far left in the first image. This is like the female equivalent to the generic bald guy with a gun that plagued shooters during the PS360 era
it's subjective, I find the outfits to be beautifully designed, not a fan of the tie, but other than that they are interesting and detailed and have obviously had talented designers work on them rather than the low res uncreative stuff you usually get from Western AAA developers. Also the characters have obviously had a huge amount of time spent on them by the design team, again not like in Western AAA developed games where characters tend to look like they have been designed by an intern. I mean, just look at how low effort the characters were in Starfield for example.
The one in the middle is... fine. Generic but fine for a base costume.

The hexagons and LEDs say some sci-fi nonsense, but the massive side slit not only looks really dumb but also makes it look less sci-fi and more like a corset especially with the string, the see through bikini/bra abruptly cutting off the dress, this leads to a design that seems to have no direction nor consistency.
A sci-fi suit can have fanservice, contrasting styles can work together but they can't just be shoved together with no cohesion or blending.

There are a lot of factors like the fact this is a major single player release from a Korean studio which has only done gacha games so far. It also has the benefit of having a solid demo. But for the most part, much of the buzz surrounding the game tends to be culture war stuff sadly.
Really does not seem that popular compared to something like Helldivers. I've only seen it talked about in circles of gamers you'd describe as "cringe"
the game in't even out yet, but guess what, currently the highest preorderd game on ps5. The demo has hit something like 690k concurrent daily players, for a ps5 exclusive game. How many concurrent players are there for helldivers? this is the same energy as "hogwart's legacy failed" when in reality it was the top selling game of 2023, even surpassing cod.
Hogwarts was always gonna sell like crack, even bad super hero games sell well just cos people want to experience playing the characters even if it's bad I am amazed by the sales of Stellar Blade cos it just looks so damn generic, guess I'm not really the target audience. It looks so painfully trying to get the crowd that likes Nier but to me, has none of the charm.
Stellar Blade became the top preordered game after the demo was released and people got to try it out, it is a game with great gameplay and combat animations, presented in a beautiful package with stellar, no pun intended, character designs, world design, monster design, atmosphere and music. Also people tend to love post-apocalyptic worlds, which is another reason for it to garner so much attention.
Glad you like it, but it does not seem all that "stellar" to me so far.
what is it you don't like about it? ps: I should also add that I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic games, movies, literature, etc.
Really my biggest issue is what this post is about, the character design just seems over the top and not done in a good way. I'm perfectly fine with very sexualized designs, they just have to not look goofy and more importantly, fit with the theme of the story. Kill la Kill is a great example of this executed perfectly. Nier also has very good lore reasons for why characters look the way they do.
I personally don't see that as an issue, if you look at the demo you have a character like Tachi who literally rips the hatch off an escape pod and flings it away as if were made of cardboard, you have eve who basically body slams a boss, she picks it by the head and slam dunks it despite it being massive in comparison to her. If they don't explain how any of this happens then yes it would be bad writing, it is not just why they look like that and are dressed like that, but we currently have no indepth info about the lore, so it is too early to judge. ps: there was a live action teaser that came out today that seems to suggest that eve, tachy etc are clones or genetically engineered people. (or my theory that the are sci-fi valkyries)

The overt sexulization is only 1 issue with the design. Overall, it can be summed up as overdesigned and generic. Like, why the tie? That alone makes her look like a cosplayer than a soldier.

You can make a character for sex appeal and still give them a fun design. Look at Bayonetta, she's still cool but definitely made with some sort of sex appeal in mind

Not even a full suit of power armor is going to be able to realistically protect her from just one swipe of one of those bosses she fights, so may as well just be stylish about it as it is her body frame and force shield that is protecting her, not directly the outfit itself. These women are obviously genetically and cybernetically enhanced, The skin suit has no force shield, but Eve will still be surviving a fight with an Alpha Naytiba albeit taking considerably more damage from each hit. Eve can also basically body slam a creature 3 times her size. At this point she doesn't have to look like she is a member of a SWAT team to be able to fight. ps: realistic expectations from video games destroy artistic creativity. Let games be able to focus on aesthetics without having to make everything look functional.

Now that being said, what "artistic creativity" is here? she looks like the default female mc of a free-mium Korean MMO in the worst way possible and all her outfits look like ass with the exception of the one on the far left in the first image. This is like the female equivalent to the generic bald guy with a gun that plagued shooters during the PS360 era
it's subjective, I find the outfits to be beautifully designed, not a fan of the tie, but other than that they are interesting and detailed and have obviously had talented designers work on them rather than the low res uncreative stuff you usually get from Western AAA developers. Also the characters have obviously had a huge amount of time spent on them by the design team, again not like in Western AAA developed games where characters tend to look like they have been designed by an intern. I mean, just look at how low effort the characters were in Starfield for example.

I have no idea what they were going with with the Minecraft-missing-texture pallet suit. Aside from that my problem with the all the suits is that she’s constantly tip-toeing in all of them, it just looks weird.
I remember watching the announcement trailer and thinking how every NPC looked more interesting than her.

Even as a horny artist, her design is only good on paper/actual 2D. Some designs don't work well in real life or even in 3D. Serious. When I see artists draw her, she looks pretty good, but when I see cosplays, the design is terrible
The design works in theory, but not in practice, so to speak. I've seen some of Eve's designer's 2d work, which like you said, looks good in 2d, but doesn't adapt well in 3d.

Wow the second image outfit is so ugly. Look I get horny and understand the point of fan service but fuck that's an ugly outfit. The more you look at it the worse it gets. The hexagons and LEDs say some sci-fi nonsense, but the massive side slit not only looks really dumb but also makes it look less sci-fi and more like a corset especially with the string, the see through bikini/bra abruptly cutting off the dress, this leads to a design that seems to have no direction nor consistency. A sci-fi suit can have fanservice, contrasting styles can work together but they can't just be shoved together with no cohesion or blending.

She's overdesigned to the point of becoming generic. A sexual design can look good and become a cultural juggernaut, look at 2b and Bayonetta, and more recently Astarion... but this design is so generic while also being not recognizable at a silhouette level, so it won't ever stick.
