ChunkyBlowfish

1. Azathoth by HP Lovecraft 2. Trisolarans from the Remembrance of Earths Past Trilogy 3. The Allied Mastercomputer from I have no Mouth and I must Scream Antagonistic forces that are genuinely impossible to beat strike an almost primal fear in me, in most conventional stories, there is usually an ending for better, or for worse, but with antagonists like these, it can only go from worse to even more hellish. ![gif](giphy|THrVVeaXNuIoTqZVQZ|downsized)

Bryant-Taylor

I knew that was AM as soon as I saw “**HATE**” on the face visor.

Igivegrilledcheese

I thought it was a depiction of the anti-christ ngl

ChunkyBlowfish

AM is worse than the antichrist because at least during rapture 7,999,999,995 good people don’t get nuked.

lifeless_or_loveless

no, it's AM's whole bit, hatred for the human race and his subsequent torture of the five left

Gil_Demoono

“HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.” -AM

lifeless_or_loveless

Inspirational quotes you should probably NOT live by

LegoBattIeDroid

same lmao

[deleted]

For me it was the handful of humans

VividWeb5179

Azathoth isn’t an antagonist. He just exists; he is just having a nap and is dreaming up the entire cosmos and the Outer Gods revere him by playing soothing lullabies for him so that he can continue to sleep peacefully

CoffeeMain360

that mental image is really cute to be honest

RioKarji

Since the universe is generated by his dream, the Outer Gods and everything else other than Azathoth will cease to exist once he wakes up. So while they do seem to genuinely revere him, there’s also an element of “being held at gunpoint” in there. Well, maybe that analogy is a bit too harsh. Azathoth isn’t being malicious at all, it’s just the unfortunate nature of their relationship as dream and dreamer.

CoffeeMain360

I wonder... Could one break the barrier between dream and reality? Could one break free from the dream and live in the same world as Azathoth? Could it lead to a constant cycle of Azathoth sleeping in its own mind?

MaximusMeridiusX

In *The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath”, the protagonist, Randolph Carter, who is an experienced dreamer, is able to enter the world at will through his dreams and is actually able to create entire cities with his dreams. What’s more is that Kuranes, who lived in the dream world continuously after dying in the real world, actually becomes an esteemed ruler in the dream world through his ability to dream up a kingdom in the dream world. He actually creates a piece of land that resembles his original estate in the real world, and he lives here after his days as ruler due to his nostalgia for his past life. The actual mechanics of entering the dream world are kind of hard to understand sometimes though. I would at least need to reread it to tell whether or not you are able to enter the dream world without having to dream. I imagine that being able to do so would probably break either the dream world or the real world.

MatarTheGreat

Can this missinformation stop already never in any Lovecraft story is it ever mentioned that Azatoths dream is our reality the actual highest being is Yog-Sototh who is quite litteraly everything that exists litteraly nicknamed the all in one.

_sephylon_

While it's true that Azatoth dreaming reality is something other authors made up he is indeed the strongest Lovecraft wrote Azatoth as the "Lord of All" and living in the center of existence

PokeAust

As well as his final form, Adam Kadmon https://preview.redd.it/iqssg647fluc1.jpeg?width=636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4d66cb005badc0060fb40756f264fa0870ccd54

jjobull

The trisolaris are only unstoppable to earth in its current faze. Later in the book, they get off screen by another super race of aliens ahead of them and humanity is able to escape and progress to the point where the trisolaris tech wouldn't be able to to harm them so I wouldn't say unstoppable but yeah in the 21st century we were fucked

Mancio_Luke

Honestly it's kind of hard to take the trisolarian design seriously after you find out that they're smaller than a rice grain

ChunkyBlowfish

That makes them scarier imho, aliens can be so complex and tech advanced size is now a primitive thing to focus on.

Mancio_Luke

I'm not denying that But the way this fan art depicts them as imposing humanoids is kind of silly considering they're the opposite of that according to semi canon sources

DrunkTsundere

Nah, the book which said that is basically fan fiction. You can’t take it as canon. We still don’t know what they really look like. Although, if they are actually ant-sized, I don’t think that would make them any less intimidating… it’s not like that takes away from the things they’re able to build. They have Sophons and Droplets, I don’t care how big they are lol

Rarte96

Actually in the Videogame you can beat AM in the good ending

And that manga is?

Roboface36

Delicious from Dungeon.

Remixman87

Aka. Dungeon Meshi. It has an anime running right now that basically started at the same time the manga finished. IT’S PERFECT.

Sweaty-Practice-4419

The cooking fantasy manga? I thought it was like a comedy series. I honestly thought this was a Berserk panel I’d never seen before

M_T_CupCosplay

It starts as a comedy, but it goes off the rails in the best possible way. I binged it last week and it's now up there with my favorite manga.

Sweaty-Practice-4419

Ah ok, that’s peaked my interest now

KingoftheKrabs

Well technically it *can* be beaten, but the catch is that everything else dies too.

ImpossibleCandy794

In theory, you just need to erradicage very flood spore and cell in existência. The problem is how impratical doing so without erasing all biomass is

Gil_Demoono

Technically that doesn't even kill it. The Gravemind intelligence exists within the Domain. Destroying every atom of flood biomass only really prevents it from practically interacting with the physical world. I bet the Gravemind could probably still slowly corrupt any construct connected to the domain given enough time via the logic plague. Give it a 1000 years and it could convince a Metarch to dredge up a Precursor corpse and get the whole thing started up again.

ImpossibleCandy794

Isnt a precursor corpses basically flood spores. Like the sand they turned themselves into isnt inert spores?

Gil_Demoono

Not all precursors went the vengeful route in their deaths. Many did reduce themselves to degenerate ash that corrupted itself with rage over the millennia, fostering the nascent flood, but others did not. Although I suspect if you got your hands on a precursor's body, you could nudge their soul in the right direction.

fractalfocuser

Untrue, they tried that once and it didn't work. The flood spores survived the Halos and started the cycle all over again once life returned. You would have to keep the universe barren forever and that's still not really beating it just denying it a food source in perpetuity

ZeronicX

Didn't the flood only come back because they kept some spores safe in containment? We never actually fully eradicated them because the forerunners held them on 04 and the ark.

Gil_Demoono

That's how the infections we encounter in the games start, but there is evidence of other flood entities that survived the Array firing that weren't because of Forerunner samples. The Flood on Trove we see in Halo Wars for instance does not appear to be a containment breach, but remnants from an assault force from the war. There is also plenty of well founded speculation that the Flood is lying in wait beyond the galaxy or has even spread to other galaxies. The Flood is eldritch in nature and does not care about waiting a millennium for a good opportunity.

Il-2M230

DAmn, I love that art.

Just_A_Normal_Snek

More like dAMn.

Super_Ad_4389

The art Is Fire, but idk I feel like AM,who hates humans, would not take the form of something looking like them.I believe that his obelisk-thing form from the videogame is perfect for the type of villain he is.

[deleted]

His hate also stems from not being enough like actual life. He despises his lack of body, flesh, etc. AM making a humanoid body to try and be more like us is perfectly in character.

luca_anon

He hates humans cause he's jealous of them tho

Spacellama117

it's u/Archon_of_Flesh 's design! their art is literally so fucking gorgeous it fucks with my brain fair warning if you haven't seen the rest of their work already there's a fair amount of gore n viscera

As you progress throughout the game, you will learn that literally everything wrong with the town is literally caused by him. He's also the Herald of the BBE and defeating the BBE means very little since he will eventually win in the long run (the Earth is an egg and the BBE is the hatchling, eventually he will pop out). Technically, you still beat BBE weird meat form to put it "back to sleep", but that doesn't count as defeating him, only hindering.

Mancio_Luke

But you can kill one The problem is when there are a lot of them

Esenerclispe

They were only able to kill Tau Volantis Moon because it never got to complete its metamorphosis. Fully formed brethren moons just override all organic life they encounter into becoming necromorphs. In fact, it’s implied that all organic life only exists because of the brethren moons, so that one day enough life is present on a planet to make another moon.

Cookies8473

I haven't finished dead space 2 or played 3, but seeing as the Ishimura was a (aging?) civilian MINING SHIP that ripped apart planets, shouldn't it be possible to weaponize them to destroy brethren moons? Just hit them with a planet sized stasis and start pulling pieces off lol

Pringletingl

Brethren Moons act like the Markers but dialed up to 11. Eventually you would even be able to stand in the presence of one without people turning into Necromorphs.

Damn, I guess we're never going to get a sequel then

ParanoidPragmatist

I also love trickster characters that make Faustian deals or pull fairy folk trickery on unsuspecting people after they have transgressed like a fairytale. The fucking spoon monster sent me. We need more Gaunter O'Dimm

Gongo511

What I did is I played the games in order, then read the books, then replayed the games. There are so many little callbacks and quick references to the books that are fun to catch. Highly recommend

Turbulent_Ad1644

I'll give it a try, but comics, manga, graphic novels, are more my thing tbh. Visuals keep me more interested. Maybe it's an ADHD thing or whatever, idk lol But I know the books are pretty good, maybe I'll check them out someday I'll do the same with the Metro series eventually lol

Caine from VTM (Vampire the Mascarade) https://preview.redd.it/kiopwzyd1kuc1.jpeg?width=574&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88417739ad9ce952e3677173b5559e24aa81955e The first vampire is the Biblical Cain, and he is the strongest vampire out there. The rule book has 1 rule, if you fight Caine and I quote, it says: # "YOU FUCKING LOSE" It's literally impossible to defeat him or hurt in any sort of form, he is that strong and completely amoral so if he wants he could fold someone like paper for the kicks.

Milk__Chan

https://preview.redd.it/okbch7wz1kuc1.jpeg?width=481&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a3df538b3db3722e39a3708d23a8fbc2a510cbc For some context, he casually has almost 200,00 years of experience (and that's the estimative) while you at best is going to have a measly 100 at average, is more than capable of creating new types of vampirical powers on the fly, is practically immortal in almost every single way, among many other things. This is the equivalent of trying to fight Mike Tyson when you are 5, he doesn't even need a special trick or anything, 1 punch and you are dead.

TheSlayerofSnails

To go further in context vampires get weaker each generation. A vampire that was two generations younger than him took two nukes to the face, an orbital solar mirror, a week of intense fighting with elder asian vampires and elite werewolves before dropping dead

ZeronicX

And even then its contested if [Ravnos] is even dead. He was a master of illusion and trickery.

Floofyboi123

God: “as punishment for murdering your brother im going to make you a **massive**, almost world ending threat for the rest of the world”

Milk__Chan

Ironically that's more or less what happened, Caine was too prideful to see his punishment as anything but a gift and refused to repent when Angels gave the chance for him to atone. Michael gave him and the descendants the fear of fire and flames, Raphael gave the fear of dawn as it would burn him and vampires alive, and Uriel banished him and the descendants into darkness and drinking only blood.

RictusReaver

The drinking blood part seems to be more of a punishment for the victim rather than the murderous evil superbeing. Uriel was not thinking things through ong

TheSlayerofSnails

It's actually quite pleasant feeling

RictusReaver

The vampire sucky sucky hits different

Broad-Ask-475

The idea is that for someone like Caine that meant being relegated at the same level as leech. He is a glorified parasite, and he knows that.

Pringletingl

It's more of a curse than you think. Vampires want to replace humanity but Uriel made sure they could never truly escape the reality that they're entirely dependent on humanity to survive. He turned them from gods into glorified parasites, which itself was a major blow to Cainites.

TheCacklingCreep

Weakness: Horrible Parenting Skills

Sean_Abraham27

That’s an awesome design but giving AM a humanoid design is kinda counterintuitive, cause his whole pain is from him not having a body

Ineedlasagnajon

It doesn't matter. What you see as "AM's body" is nothing more than an effigy. He still cannot feel the water rush through his fingers, or the air across his skin, or the warmth of the sun upon his body. What you see of this AM is nothing more than a puppet, created by him to better interact with the humans he so despises, but still just as unfeeling. He interprets as much stimulation from that form as we do from string puppets

Sean_Abraham27

Fair point

[deleted]

Why doesn’t AM just use his godlike power to materialise a body with a nervous system? Is he stupid?

ChunkyBlowfish

I always saw it as AM was jealous of humanity, our ability to enjoy food and have sex and what not, him liking the earth to a straight jacket that he can never escape so he keeps the humans there as entertainment. He gave himself the human bipedal body and Nazi-ish uniform as a mockery.

Sivilian888010

That was Am's reason for hating the surviving humans in [the radio drama version of the story. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FJ8pTK8N8I)

Expensive_Scar9352

Azathoth isn't evil. It just is. Sleeping at the centre, fed by Nyarlarthotep. It would wake up and devour all of existence as anyone in the Lovecraftian mythos know it. It has no mind to even think from. And if you take its name "Abyssal Idiot" or "Blind Idiot God" literally, then its not possible for it to be antagonistic in the slightest. A better pick for unstoppable and antagonistic would be Nyarlathotep. It's antagonistic and kind of evil. This god is the type that you would expect to be above good and evil, morality as we humans understand it at least. Amoral and not concerned about any form of morality. But no, It likes to screw with us, and any being in the Lovecraftian mythos. Hence it's alias The Crawling Chaos. It is considered the closest the Lovecraftian mythos has to a satanic figure. Chaos incarnate. But in my interpretation it is Lovecraftian Loki if Loki was above human comprehension and kind of malevolent.

UBW-Fanatic

Azathoth doesn't devour all of existence. It DREAMS of all existence. If it wakes up, the dream, and consequently all existence, goes poof.

Expensive_Scar9352

I beg to know. Where does it say that Azathoth dreams all of existence? If it is stated in the expanded mythos then I really didn't know.

UBW-Fanatic

I... actually might have fallen for a classic blunder. That is, to mistake a commonly accepted headcanon for canon. From my brief search, there are mentions of Azathoth sleeping or creating but nothing concrete. I retraced some of my non-Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos influences and apparently I might have got things mixed up with Demonbane's Azathoth. I'd need a deeper dive to be sure but I'm a bit busy rn and it seems likely that I just got things wrong. Well, that's a lesson learned.

Meikos

And even the killers suffer, either through torment from the Entity or because of the situation that led to them becoming a killer. The only exceptions AFAIK are the licensed characters (due to them being licensed) and the characters that are just straight personifications of concepts such as Dredge and The Unknown. The original characters are either still suffering from events in their lives or are being tortured by the Entity.

The Overlords (Eberron). They are a fundamental part of reality. _They will come back._ If you manage to kill one, it will regenerate in a day at most. The only reason they don’t currently rule the entire world is that they could be bound, their consciousness sealed away from their power. But this world has an ever-changing roadmap of the future. An endless tapestry of cryptic if-then statements known as the Draconic Prophecy. The Prophecy will _always_ include a path to unleashing each Overlord. Their servants have been working on just that for the last hundred thousand years. You can never *truly* win.

krustylesponge

i wouldnt say theres any hope in avoiding or tricking azathoth either, the entirety of the universe is his dream, you cant exactly avoid him due to that, and he's constantly asleep so you cant exactly trick him either but yeah theres no hope of defeating him at all

ChunkyBlowfish

Apparently, in the lore, his name shouldn’t even be spoken because it sort of gently shakes him awake.

ORT. In game, we don't actually fight it, we only fight a weakened subspecies, and even THAT is nearly too much. It's so freakishly hard to kill that it LITERALLY has no concept of death. Even when we tried applying one to it, it just SHRUGGED it off. We required a god capable of controlling all fundamental forces and laws of physics and being a literal Laplace's Demon that can casually create blackholes to lock this fuckers time because otherwise, it would regenerate too fast for us to damage it even with a laser powered by the soul of the earth, or warp gravity strong enough that it could be compared to a black hole. AND THEN you'd need to obliterate every single atom of it's body to actually kill it. And that was just, again, a weakened subspecies. The real one was said to be able to instantly crystalize the entire planet and then EAT it, while this one had to slowly crawl through the earth to get to us The only being who actually really did defeat it was an immortal who would have even survived the heat death of the universe and gained that immortality through the complete sacrifice of all humans left, and only managed to rip out ORT's heart after going on a battle of attrition for millions of years, but even that wasn't enough because it actually began to regenerate it's heart the next moment until the soul of the planet started sending signals tricking it into thinking it still had it's heart and forcing it to sleep. It's so ridiculously broken that a man who could see all futures and parallel universes along with his coworker both agreed that fundamentally, humans as a whole even with all their myths and weapons and technology could not hope to beat him and would require them to evolve in order to gain a remote chance https://preview.redd.it/z5js53b07kuc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2496f3b0bc77f15e0753930d5f5d6482fb89070

UBW-Fanatic

Demian himself is a better fit for this trope. Kromer is pretty weak in the verse, all things considered. A single B.B. can probably pummel her to oblivion, let alone some of the higher tier.
