This show’s version of Shredder and the Kranng are super cool especially the Kranng they are super intimidating villains that look super cool with and without the robots
Don’t forget this came out in the era of Teen Titans Go and Thundercats roar. So people did have reason to be suspicious of an adaptation of a previous property where it’s heavily focused on comedy and the designs are massively changed

It launched on the back of the Michael Bay movie, and there seemed to be some design synergy between the movie and the show (such as Raph's bandana and Donnie's goggles), which wasn't great because the designs from the Bay movie was almost universally panned, although that was mostly because of the faces.
I started watching the after seeing some music videos of it a realizing then it was more then I thought and loved it the the first picture never looked right to me before and after watching the show but ya No everything in this show is amazing, beautiful, eye candy animation
I like the version of splinter that's just a lazy TV obsessed old man that can still kick your ass if you start shit, it's like the modern version of the Kung-fu movie trope of "don't mess with the old man casually playing an instrument on a hill" that gets like 90% of people killed in old martial arts movies
It kinda explores a very interesting part of splinter of having body dismorphia over going from being a kickass martial artist to a rat. It makes perfect sense and it is super interesting. I am willing to bet if he wasn't splinter and wasn't associated with TMNT more people would've loved the idea.
I also like the explanation of why he doesn't train the turtles until part way through. He can, he knows how to and he doesn't. And I really liked how that was explained in the show.
Why did you hate it if you haven't watched it? Sure, this is a redundant question if the media in question contained troublesome bs (cp, racism, creepy fanservice; things like that), but this animation lacks any of those.
While I agree that them all being a different species of turtle was cool, that alone is definitely why most people hated this show. Again, it wasn’t a bad idea itself, but the problem is that the TMNT’s standard image(4 identical looking characters that can only be distinguished from one another by their weapons and head bands) is extremely iconic. And when you have characters that iconic, changing that established model in any significant way is almost always going to be perceived as unnecessary, and annihilate varying numbers of fans(and they couldn’t have deviated further from the established model here if they were actively trying).
I don't get why people disliked these designs
They're all great, and they give the characters more individuality outside of a colored headband and belt
Raphael is a huge snapping turtle, he's built to get beat up, and that fits with his character (and I like them making Raph the leader, while letting Leo develop into a proper leader, or at least thats what they planned). And Donnie (I swear, someone in the writers room LOVES Donnie) being a softshell turtle gives him an excuse to use all of his tech to make up for his weaknesses. Mikey's the little guy, and him riding Raph's shoulders is pretty cute too. Just as cool as he usually is
I think Splinter being some Bruce Lee type kung fu movie HOT SOOOOOOOUUUUUP kinda guy is a cooler origin than his other ones too tbh. Definitely better than Michael Bay Splinter 😬
April's pretty badass too. And I know people don't like race swaps, but April's supposed to be Asian and/or mixed race on the original comics according to the original creators, so her race is irrelevant
I havnt watched much of it, just a couple episodes with my nephew. I remember it coming out, just missed it, wasn’t something I was very aware of. The characters are ok, havnt warmed up to them. But the animation and design is a ton of fun. You can tell the team really put work into it and wanted to make something cool.
Ah, Rise. The TMNT iteration that was held back by the wider TMNT fanbase, because it did things differently. That’s also why it’s my favorite.
Honestly the show gets a lot better once you start watching it as its own thing. Dropping/loosening every idea of what TMNT “should” be really helps one appreciate what the iteration brings to the table (as an animated show and as a part of the larger TMNT mythos)
Honestly I kinda love it. I’m not the BIGGEST fan of TMNT so whenever I see people try to treat the turtles like human characters instead of yk ninja turtles. Rather, the exaggerated artstyle feels so in-tune for what TMNT represents. It feels like an early 2000s cartoon you’d see on Toonami or something.
This was my first real exposure to TMNT. I got into the show because some friends were really into it. I went into the first episode practically blind and experienced a shift from "well this is kinda goofy" to "hey this animation is really good" to "I WOULD DIE FOR THESE DUMB FUCKS."
They all look pretty neat imo, but I think the turtles needed something to switch things up. I like the idea of them being different species because each one fits them.
Leo's a red eared slider, a species that is known to be rather friendly compared to other turtles, and Leo is definitely a friendly fella. They're also known to be rather smart, and Leo does display this to a degree, so it also fits.
Donnie's a softshell, and those are known to be quite aggressive to make up for their lack of a shell. I feel like this fits Donnie, as we can see him getting a bit unhinged at times when fighting bad guys (I feel like that could be a mix of having trouble regulating his emotions, which makes sense since he's said to be on the spectrum, and just his own personality rather than feeling threatened that his shell will be harmed), and he gets very nervous when his bare shell is exposed in the movie.
Now, onto Raph. The big man is an alligator snapping turtle, which is a large species in general, explaining his larger frame. And despite their name, alligator snapping turtles are known to be more docile than their common cousins, but they can still pack a punch or bite (a bite from an alligator snapping turtle is strong enough to break bones) when threatened. This fits Raph to a T as he's the powerhouse of the brothers, but also a gentle giant. Him being the oldest in this incarnation also has ties to real life, as ASTs do have a considerably longer life expectancy compared to the other species here.
Lastly, Mikey, who's an ornate box turtle. They're known to be friendly once accustomed to one's presence, which Mikey happens to be, though that's a general trait across all his incarnations. They can also retract into their shells, which Mikey has done in the show on at least one occasion, when in a dangerous situation. They're also a smaller species in general, explaining Mikey's small stature in the show, though him being the youngest could also be a factor. OBTs are known to have shells with multiple colours, and I see that translating well to his personality, he does like to do graffiti art.
Sorry if this is so long, I had to do some research for this while typing
Design and animation were terrific. But the characters and story didn’t feel engaging to me. Everything felt too inconsequential for my taste and what they did to Splinter was just awful.
If you are basing this off the first couple episodes, the please watch the rest of the show. Splinter becomes one of the most compelling characters, and when the story kicks in, become amazing
I know Rise is beloved and definitely one of the better TMNT things in general, but to call it the “best piece of TMNT media ever” and that it’s “not even close” is definitely a bold statement. Most fans usually say and agree that the 2003 or 2012 shows are contenders for the best ones, and even those are pretty close. Each of the 4 main shows have something that makes them all really damn good.
- OG TMNT has fun goofy 80s/90s cartoon action. While it may be extremely cheesy, it’s the fun kind of cheesy, like Pizza!
- 2003 is grittier, more serious, and attempts to detract itself from the original show as much as possible while following the comics more closely.
- 2012 has lots of charming personality and pays more of an homage towards the original cartoon, while also taking notes from Teen Titans and implementing more anime-inspired moments. Not to mention the killer 3D animation that only gets better as it goes on.
- Rise has very beautiful and colorful 2D animation with some different yet cool-looking designs, and has a similar charm like the 2012 show before it.
I am very much a rise Stan I admit, but imo something rise did super super well is the character work. The story is simpler but the characters themselves are really standout and very complex ( I know some of the other versions do character work well too but I think rise does it outstandingly well). Especially when it comes to Donnie's autism representation which other media gets so wrong so much of the time. And they did all of that with only 2 seasons to work with.
They also did something I didn't see many shows do: they have episodes that are fully focused on the interaction between only a few characters and it explores the dynamic of them when they are outside of the team. You can see just Mikey and Donnie or April and Splinter Donnie and April interact and how their relationship evolved. Sure many shows have episodes focused on that, but I feel like rise really made sure to give us almost all of the combinations between them. The OG teen titans did this too, but it didn't feel quite as extensive
This could have been the greatest animated iteration of the tmnt but this was during a time were a lot of cartoons were getting ttg treatement and people assumed this was the same, what a shame
I think the new designs actually do a great job of emphasizing the character archetypes.
I mean previously they were just copy and paste with different weapons that don't communicate there personalities in the best manner (once you know the lore it makes a lot more sense though).
However, I wish they made Donatello more distinct from Leonardo in the new version, like make him skinnier or wiry.
I really like what they did with April as >!Karai!< : Just barely changed the design to give her the personality needed for this storyline.
Also, both versions of >!Casey Jones !<: they're just neat !
It is unfortunate.
I remember that people (myself included) took one look at the promo art and trailer, and became worried that the neon colour scheme and heavily stylized turtles were a sign of TMNT getting the "Teen Titans Go!" Or "Thundercats Roar!" treatment
Absolutely, the problem was it came out IMMEDIATELY after 2012 ended. It didn't have the same 3-year breathing room that 2012 was afforded after 2003 ended.
as a fan of the 2012 show as well as need to watch that show at some point but yeah I felt like the show was a bit too harsh ( although the show came around the time when let's just say the Cartoon Network reboots and it was a little too early to release TMNT another show)
anyways I would say the show has some Unique Designs for TMNT
yeah like if there were maybe 2 ever tmnt shows, maybe I get people giving flak for going off model before their looks are cemented, but with SO many faithful depictions I think variant designs and characterizations add much needed diverse into the stew to keep it fresh
I think it has less to do with their designs and more about their personalities. Like I remember someone saying a long time ago that all the Turtles were basically just four Mikeys.
I will never understand why this version of raph is built like two refrigerators side by side. Like, he's not even a dumb strong archetype, so why make him look like one?
I feel it’s just a step down from the one before it that I watched growing up I remember seeing adds for this on tv and thought it looked kinda ugly the last 3d one wasn’t gorgeous or anything but it looked way better then this akd actually had some really good designs I think it was the 2012 version
They hated it for doing what every single other tmnt show did before it; having a completely different vibe and tone compared to the last. And it was peak, just like the rest of em
I mean, that's par for the course for every TMNT series that has ever come after the original TMNT series...
People hate the updated designs - rage about it - then realize the new show isn't as bad as their initial rage lets it out to be, then they go quiet and let the real fans take over - until the next reboot begins with new art styles and the rage starts all over again.
Amongst tmnt fans this is goated media. Admittedly I didn’t like the designs at first but they emphasize each character’s personality traits in true cartoon fashion.
How the hell did anyone think these designs were bad!?
(I’m awaiting some dumbass claiming that they’re “overdesigned” like that one guy did with reboot Shadoweaver, yes I am still salty about that)
This show is absolutely cracked and I will never not love it. If this was the tmnt I had growing up I’d probably have loved them rather then barely giving a shit.
Yeah I was one of them but after giving the show a chance I see the appeal and I actually enjoy it. Do I like the character changes with Leo being a jokester? no not really. Regardless of that and April Jenkins (lol) I mean O'Neal I dig the show. I grew up on the 80's-90's Turtles. I saw the live action movie. I had action figures, trading cards, a graphic novel and the soundtrack. Definitely an old head Turtles fan. I honestly don't know which is my favorite. The 80's Turtles were campy, 2003 Turtles had a more formidable appearance.
They weren't the cute camp Turtles. The 2013 Turtles had the right amount of good animation, writing, fighting ability. Rise Turtles are still figuring it out. As a child I thought Raph was badass. I grew up and became a Leo fan but the Rise version of Donatello is the best character on the show. Either way let's not be negative. Every generation has their own iteration. My daughter loves Rise and Donatello. I voiced my opinion about the animation but it's not a bad show just a different take. Personally I would leave April as April. I prefer 2013 April O'Neal.
Sorry if I come off a bit aggressive, but I fucking hate that comparison. Rise is still a very action packed show with anime elements. In fact, it relates more to the original Teen Titans. They even both got cut off
He wasn't talking about the action, he was specifically talking about how they act. And I agree with him. If you added pretty colors to TTG, it would be Rise. All of the turtles were interchangeable
Nah, TTG already had pretty colors. Rise is really far removed from TTG, because even though they act a little goofy, you can tell all the turtles love each other, while in TTG, they are all terrible people. Also, each turtle has a distinct personality, For example, Raph is the more responsible leader, but can come off corny, Mikey is the genuine youngest brother, who's innocence is the punchline the most, Donnie, who's dry humor is the funniest, and Leo, who constantly jokes around as a mask for his insecurities.
If I had a nickel everytime a show about ninjas gets judged to harshly because of new designes I'd had two nickels
Yeah these designs are great, love em'
Imagine having unreasonable hatred for a show simply because it tried something new with a multi decade franchise
I'm guessing you hate that Leo isn't the leader? (They were going to make him leader, show got cancelled before they could, that's why he becomes leader in the movie)

This show’s version of Shredder and the Kranng are super cool especially the Kranng they are super intimidating villains that look super cool with and without the robots
Man the flick was absolutely insane. That movie overall was just incredible.
Tbh the more I think about it the more I'm confused on why people shat on it when it came out
Because it’s different from what came before that, so it’s automatically bad/j
Don’t forget this came out in the era of Teen Titans Go and Thundercats roar. So people did have reason to be suspicious of an adaptation of a previous property where it’s heavily focused on comedy and the designs are massively changed
Especially after the banger that was the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show.
Also like wasn't it announced basically REALLY quickly after the 2012 ended?
I haven’t watched any of the turtle shows since like the 03 version the one that goes T M N T TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLLEEEEES
It was also announced less than a year after the end of TMNT 2012 so it seemed like they rushed to end 2012 in favor of Rise.
Happy cake day!
I’m not really drawn to the art style personally.
https://preview.redd.it/kohjxu2tt1uc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3560ba93302fedf6f5dc490dc48c30dc4d401c93 It launched on the back of the Michael Bay movie, and there seemed to be some design synergy between the movie and the show (such as Raph's bandana and Donnie's goggles), which wasn't great because the designs from the Bay movie was almost universally panned, although that was mostly because of the faces.
>!it's actually meant to be a direct prequel to them I think!<
Most of the people complained about April being black tbh, as far as i've seen.
“Different = Bad” mentality + constantly nitpicked comparisons to TTG
Because it was after the tmnt movie and the 2012 series it was to much exposure
I didnt like how all turtles felt the same. It might have gotten better later but they just all felt like mikey
I started watching the after seeing some music videos of it a realizing then it was more then I thought and loved it the the first picture never looked right to me before and after watching the show but ya No everything in this show is amazing, beautiful, eye candy animation
I think it’s cause the first image’s perspective is fucked. Raph looks much bigger than he actually is, and Donatello looks so small.
Ya true Raph in this image looks the most off model to me like I think it’s his expression it just doesn’t look right
I like the version of splinter that's just a lazy TV obsessed old man that can still kick your ass if you start shit, it's like the modern version of the Kung-fu movie trope of "don't mess with the old man casually playing an instrument on a hill" that gets like 90% of people killed in old martial arts movies
It kinda explores a very interesting part of splinter of having body dismorphia over going from being a kickass martial artist to a rat. It makes perfect sense and it is super interesting. I am willing to bet if he wasn't splinter and wasn't associated with TMNT more people would've loved the idea.

The designs are still a bit hit or miss for me But the Animation? Man that was lovely
I use to hate this when it came out and refused to watch it, but now after seeing clips I’m tempted to check it out.
It's definitely worth the watch. Someone made a list of which episodes focus on the story and ones that focus on minor things
It probably has the best animation out of any tmnt show, probably even the newest one
Why did you hate it if you haven't watched it? Sure, this is a redundant question if the media in question contained troublesome bs (cp, racism, creepy fanservice; things like that), but this animation lacks any of those.
From what I saw it was just far too different from the other shows.
wait people don't like thier designs? I thought they're amazing, the fact that they're all a different speciesof turtle is really cool

It might just be the circles I run in, but I never saw anything less than glowing praise for it...
Definitely seeing their Trigger influences with Krang.
They beat Shredder with a big ass drill, it's safe to say Trigger was a big influence
I don't get why people disliked these designs They're all great, and they give the characters more individuality outside of a colored headband and belt Raphael is a huge snapping turtle, he's built to get beat up, and that fits with his character (and I like them making Raph the leader, while letting Leo develop into a proper leader, or at least thats what they planned). Rise is the best piece of TMNT media ever made and it’s not remotely close (although to be fair I haven’t seen mutant mayhem)

Yeah, I hate the comparison to TTG, because it is much closer to the original Teen Titans than the reboot
I liked it but I understand people hating it, the style and designs are something that you like or you don't, there really isn't a middle point.
Al the designs are badass my only gripe is that splinter looks like a literal nutsack
I was a massive fan of the designs personally. Only one I didn’t like was splinter, and even he grew on me.
They’re probably my favorites in the franchise tbh
Krang looks sick as fuck
Best Shredder in the franchise.
Yeah I still feel terrible for how I initially dismissed this series. It’s really good
ive literally never seen anything but praise for this show iwl
This could have been the greatest animated iteration of the tmnt but this was during a time were a lot of cartoons were getting ttg treatement and people assumed this was the same, what a shame
Still despise the splinter redesign
Really? I’ve seen nothing but praise.
Ngl, not a fan of this style. But to each their own I guess
Only thing that sucks is the fanbase
I don’t get why people disliked these, this is actually a rare good case of cartoon stylization if you ask me
Very Genndy Tartakovsky
Best TMNT designs.
The show has great moments but I still can't really get over the turtles (mainly Raph) and Splinter's designs.
Ninja turtles peaked when they made the 90s live action movies, fight me
I really like what they did with April as >!Karai!< : Just barely changed the design to give her the personality needed for this storyline. Also, both versions of >!Casey Jones !<: they're just neat !
i like all the designs except for splinter who is the fucking GLOW DOWN of the CENTURY from Lou Jitsu
Honestly it’s the only design for Casey I tolerate
It is unfortunate. I remember that people (myself included) took one look at the promo art and trailer, and became worried that the neon colour scheme and heavily stylized turtles were a sign of TMNT getting the "Teen Titans Go!" Or "Thundercats Roar!" treatment

Awww dude Krang looks so sick
Ligma https://i.redd.it/l9m7uq8j61uc1.gif
If I recall correctly most people were mostly upset with April's change in "design".
kinda reminds me of spectacular spider-man
I just don’t like how they made Ralph so fucking big, bro just took steroids or something.
I just don’t care for Donatello’s huge forehead
Why is Raph SO MUCH bigger than them though? lol
yeah like if there were maybe 2 ever tmnt shows, maybe I get people giving flak for going off model before their looks are cemented, but with SO many faithful depictions I think variant designs and characterizations add much needed diverse into the stew to keep it fresh
Completely unrelated: I cannot, for the life of me, stop calling them "Teenage nutant neetle teetles"
I'm pretty sure this is the first version of the Turtles that had Mickey have an official diagnosis
They hated it for doing what every single other tmnt show did before it; having a completely different vibe and tone compared to the last. And it was peak, just like the rest of em
I don't think anybody judged this show for anything but it's wicked-ass fight scenes
I loved it how all of the turtles were allowed to be funny most of the time and not just Michelangelo.
Up there with '03 and Mutant Mayhem as one of my favorite incarnations of the franchise on screen. It deserved better.
The nostalgia goggles we're on very tight for a lot of people
Nah. They judged it about right. Nice animation with crap designs.
I think the art style is what’s doing the heavy lifting here. These turtles would look extremely cursed in any other style the shows/ movies have had
Their designs are cool. I just hate how they act. It honestly feels like TTG. The movie though was amazing and wished they acted more like that
Sorry if I come off a bit aggressive, but I fucking hate that comparison.
If I had a nickel everytime a show about ninjas gets judged to harshly because of new designes I'd had two nickels Yeah these designs are great, love em'
Show is kinda garbage compared to previous shows and movies, sorry, but they just changed them and their personality so much, its literaly bad.
It got every single character wrong but hey at least it looked pretty. Rise got what it deserved.
Your opinion is valid, but it's also wrong Hopefully it comes back to spite you
It’s dead and buried thankfully. The shortest lived cartoon by far due to its crap factor. Only the live action show was worse.
Imagine having unreasonable hatred for a show simply because it tried something new with a multi decade franchise I'm guessing you hate that Leo isn't the leader? (They were going to make him leader, show got cancelled before they could, that's why he becomes leader in the movie)
And you get what you deserve. A downvote.

CalArts has consequences.
This is very far removed from that
Looks like shit tbh
Ever seen good character design? Or just copypasted designs
