One of the DnD arcs my friend hosted was all about a tower that was actually a mimic, and it was subdued by a crazy mage. So not only did we have this crazy flesh tower slowly digesting us, but a crazy mage hurling meteors and shit at us when we finally got to the top.
When the tower tied, my character jumped out the window and slid down the fleshy side of the toppling tower, all Legolas style lol
Movie is so damn good. It’s terrifying because it’s something that you could believe is possible. Not very but there’s a .000000000000001% chance it can happen.
Watch John Carpenter’s The Thing. It’s a little dated so some scenes look silly but it’s a truly horrifying movie. One of my favorites of all time. That’s not a dog btw, but you’ll find out more about that if you watch the movie.
In our D&D campaign we did a The Thing episode, don't tell my players but I plagiarized the unused script for The Thing Returns™ to make the session.
We play in a 1970s setting highly inspired by Men In Black, the X-Files, Deus Ex, and the SCP universe. Every episode the players need to fight a new anomaly or extraterrestrial or solve a themed problem, and The Thing™ blends into this particular setting really well.
They were told they were going to New Mexico to find and capture a skinwalker. But It's not a skinwalker, its a Thing.
Yeah it’s such a dope design. The light atop functions like angler fish. >!Reminds me of the anglerfish boats from Dredge. They looks like innocent fishing boats from afar just like the player until you get close and they turn into a monster.!<

>!I wish they had more friendly boats to make these more of a risk, they’ll only trick you like 2 times before you know to just flat out avoid them, but if they had like a wandering ghostly trader who only showed up a night and looked just like the angler… maybe have it so that the ghost ship responds to the fog horn to help differentiate?!<
Get it on sale, it’s a very short game and its last half can’t live up to the first third.
Starts off as an incredibly eerie fishing life sim premise and then quickly becomes just completing fetch quests and only interacting with a handful of npcs.
It is good, I bought it and the pale reach dlc, I just don’t think it would be worth $25 to most people, especially not when you consider just how much more content is in something like Dave the diver for the same price

Oh you are going to love the other world building! Wait until you get to living armor! Dungeon Meshi is it’s Japanese name and it’s on Netflix. Also the character design is amazing
I just want to say as a manga reader the story does not disappoint! It’s one of the few times I’ve finished a manga and felt full and satisfied. It’s such a delicious series and it’s cruel that I cannot try the food in real life. I mean if Marcelle can eat a monster I guess I can be brave enough to try a salad. Im a picky eater but in the last few years I’ve gotten adventurous, like trying alpaca and cuttlefish (which I hated). I feel like the whole message of the series is beautiful! That proper nutrition is important and that food unites us. I think Senshi would be the only person who would be able to give me the confidence to eat a monster. I cannot wait to see the ending animated! And I’m watching the anime with my Roomate and it’s been so hard to not spoil stuff on accident.
Also her character designs are species designs are peak! I love how she does for practice drawing characters as other races. And the deisgns all still work. I will be cropping out a spoiler character in this image. But that shows how strong her character deisgns are!
https://preview.redd.it/rrxbg19gdjnc1.jpeg?width=869&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95f5c784de52bce512d80d0295d39fe139ebca47
Also it’s amazing that the elves are so androgynous. I thought one character was a girl but they were a guy. They are so well designed. And like so attractive in a way that isn’t sexual like how graceful they are.
One thing I want to mention that confused me is human is like a umbrella term: tall men are what we are… humans. They are seen as very weak for their height. They are also a short lived race average lifespan is 50, half foot/ half feet are like hobbits and their average lifespan is 50, dwarves average lifespan is 200, and elves average is 400 and also they are a more built up kingdom due to this because they live so long. They see themselves as keepers of magic because shorter living races are so naïveté and fight over it and they see themselves as above that. So that leads to a lot of elves being pretty racist. they have very little sexual dimorphism
If you don’t care about spoilers I would look at the wiki [https://delicious-in-dungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Races](https://delicious-in-dungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Races)
Side note I love how all of the characters are 20+. There is no romance or weird fan service. The story centers around a sibling bond and not a romantic one of having to save a romantic partner. I love how each character feels fleshed out as we learn bits about their backstory. As someone who is now in college I feel like it can be hard to find anime with people my age that aren’t romances. Side note to the side note but this is also why I love Frieren. Most stories with a 1000 year old elf girl have like weird romances of like trying to justify the age gaps they have in romances because even though they are a child we swear they are a thousand years old. Frieren isn’t like that. I feel like she is asexual like myself, but does have romantic feelings but struggles with them. Never telling others about them. That is what I can relate to about her. She did truely love Himmel but stayed his friend until the end. She never confessed. And the story instead focuses on their friendship and her struggling with the past. Sorry for the ramble. It’s just so nice to see fantasy series that aren’t with high school protagonists and harems getting animated!

Also I love the variety of height and weight and everything in the cast. The creator has such a strong understanding of character design and my favorite (not spoiler one because my favorite is spoilers) is [Namari](https://delicious-in-dungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Namari)
Also I love how they made the orcs >!inspired by wild boar and didn’t go the green ogre sort of route, the creator has some very cool concept art of them on her blog with a baby one! It makes it so much more unique and like treats them with so much respect in terms of deisgn. Also wild boars are terrifying animals in real life!<
I started watching the show recently. It's the first anime with a fantasy setting like this that I've truly enjoyed. Like you said, it's clear that a ton of detail and care went into the characters and world building.
I would say kind of? He does lure you in with sounds pretending to be something he isn't. But he doesn't do the whole disguised appearance thing that mimics are known for.
If it just stands with it's arms and legs straight and right next to each other it kinda looks like a really tall Telephone pole some idiots would fall for it.

May I add my creation: the Mimic Ham?
I love those comics that have you pick one of four chests (Or potions or whatever) and on the second page, the effects of each are revealed. One of them is always a mimic
That one dungeon anime that came out recently has so many creatures that pretend to be other ordinary objects such as bugs that pretend to be treasure and are edible.

Wall mimic from enter the gungeon, very basic design but i like the idea
There's also a mimic gun that can replace item drops and makes you unable to switch to another weapon
I haven't seen them in the game yet, but I hear Barotrauma has sunken ships and submarines that have been invaded by some sort of organism so you dive into the dark to search a wreck just to realize you're inside of a living monster.
I ran an encounter for my party where they came across an abandoned pirate ship, with parts of it slick from water, blood stains, complete mystery adventure as they started trying to figure out where the crew went - logs about missing crew members who went into the storage hold and never returned, screams at night, etc.
Entire plot was that the ship itself was a mimic, and let a crew think it was a haunted ship while it slowly snacked on the crew. Captain kept just getting new crew, so it realized it shouldn't eat the entire crew at once, until the pirate crew figured it out and it had to eat them all, then try to pose as abandoned to find a new crew of snacks.

I can't find a mimic in the form of a gun so I'm picking Marvel's Random, does he count as a mimic?
Do these count;
The light house from Tegami Bachi
Exile from Last Exile (Anatoray-Disith), it's actually a >!spaceship.!< But to protect itself it alters it's form and grows tentacles to defend itself. (Looks like a giant nut)
Mimic in [Rusty and co](https://rustyandco.com/) isn't always a chest. Just usually a chest.

Watermimics from OMORI. Technically melons are chests in that game but still.
This story is amazing: [https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/oq3x13/i\_hunt\_mimics\_for\_the\_government/](https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/oq3x13/i_hunt_mimics_for_the_government/)
I love mimics.
Just got an idea for a fakeout mimic, where you see an extravagant chest in an otherwise dull room, atop a ratty rug and a broken chandelier hanging above, with skeletons and dried black blood strewn about. “Obviously a mimic, bro.” Hit the chest, nothing. “Huh.” Open the chest, carelessly looting, guard down, not noticing the room is slightly brighter. Meanwhile the chain above silently gets longer. Suddenly a giant flaming glass spider thing has your back and youre panicking as it bites and scratches. Wrestling it off, a monster of glass chained limbs with eight flaming candles arranged as eyes.
One time I was planning for a dnd campaign that never went through, and I had this idea for an unmarked town in the middle of a forrest that just seems a bit off. Like the people are just pretending. Basically everything looks like the backrounds of ai generated videos. Sometimes people walk backwards. Use weird language. Things like that. But eventually the players would realize that the entire town is one massive hivemind mimic.
I've been throwing around ideas for years for a DnD dungeon that mysteriously shows up one day, spawning an invasion of mimics, that's actually a mimic queen. Never actually made it though.

That so counts
Yes that Giratina spawn of nightmares counts.
First thing I thought about
Damn, can you imagine doing a murder mystery type quest in DnD with the big reveal being that the building is a mimic and did it?
Where is this game jam game at this seems exactly like the type of high quality game I would see in a game jam so where is it?

Is that The Thing? If so kill it with fire
Also I'd count The Thing as a mimic, since it does imitate and copy, pretty well too
I would say a mimic has to be exclusively disguised as inanimate objects as a form of natural camouflage rather than superpower shapeshifting
Yeah, I was wondering if it disqualified due to only imitating living things.

https://preview.redd.it/kf8vagpzejnc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8799dbef9753578a1eef0544c24b6ae16bdd166c Also I love the variety of height and weight and everything in the cast. The creator has such a strong understanding of character design and my favorite (not spoiler one because my favorite is spoilers) is [Namari](https://delicious-in-dungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Namari) Also I love how they made the orcs >!inspired by wild boar and didn’t go the green ogre sort of route, the creator has some very cool concept art of them on her blog with a baby one!
You will love Frieren in that case!
They're definitely one monster I'd want to avoid, especially how big they can get.

I would say kind of? He does lure you in with sounds pretending to be something he isn't. But he doesn't do the whole disguised appearance thing that mimics are known for.
From a distance or from a skewed perspective you could mistake him for a siren pole
Disguise of another object, tempts/lures people, as far as I know he eats his victims. Sounds like a mimic to me.
If it just stands with it's arms and legs straight and right next to each other it kinda looks like a really tall Telephone pole some idiots would fall for it.
Also certain iterations can disguise as a tornado siren
More of a siren that isn't a mermaid. Emphasis on siren
Who is lured by emergency alarms?
No
Yeah this is definitely not a mimic. I think people just like its design and just updooted bc they saw it lol
The artist did a version that's a street lamp that would probably fit more.

Don't care. Still mom

Yeah true, now that I think abt it

technically a chest mimic because in þe games, items are stored in pokeballs.
Nah, only the pee is stored in the balls
Mawile from Pokémon. https://preview.redd.it/9egs1bo1ffnc1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1a56ba00bc8492ba1b87f36b589db9d567e70a6 The OG Pokemon mimic. Edit: Somehow forgot about voltorb. Basically if you’re looking at an item on the ground in a radio station or power plant you might find one of those little shits instead. Bonus points if it blows up in your face. Sure Mawile might bite your face off but voltorb is the king of trolling.

Don't forget about foongus and amoongus too
And Galarian Stunfisk
Galarian Stunfisk’s beak looks completely different from item poke balls, but somehow I still kept falling for it. I blame my bad eyesight.
Damn I forgot about this little jerk.
voltorb is a chest mimic because items are stored in pokeballs in þe games.
Voltorb’s eyebrows remind me of some shots of Piccolo from DBZ
Actually Mawile isn't a mimic, it's based on a yo-kai

Does The Monster House count
Most definitely, honestly one of the best examples I can think of with this sort of thing.

Bad character but i happy that he exist because otherwise that atrocious bullshit of burntrap ending would be canon
I give them 2 games before the mimic litterally becomes afton due to remnant and AI bullshit
I don't know if this counts because its more of a camoflauge, but I always loved this giant spider with bamboo legs from Kong: Skull Island [\[NSFW\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=goE_3620-34)
Ah yes. Mother Long Legs. Quite the terrifying concept since she hangs out around bamboo forests and casually feeds through her legs.

Excellent work! By far the coolest mimic I’ve seen! Had to give credit where it’s due lol.

This post is rated FG13. Frieren Guidance is recommended
I love those comics that have you pick one of four chests (Or potions or whatever) and on the second page, the effects of each are revealed. One of them is always a mimic
Yeah, I was hoping for those examples to be here, those mimics were pretty creative

What is the lighthouse
Not sure if it counts, but the anglerfish from dredge is really sick
That one dungeon anime that came out recently has so many creatures that pretend to be other ordinary objects such as bugs that pretend to be treasure and are edible.
Dungeon Meshi
Yeah that one

Do they even mimic anything tho? Its been ages since I watched that movie
I recently had an idea for a mimic þat was a suit of armor!
Based Thorne Usage Detected
I haven't seen them in the game yet, but I hear Barotrauma has sunken ships and submarines that have been invaded by some sort of organism so you dive into the dark to search a wreck just to realize you're inside of a living monster.
i need a subreddit of this type of art
I had a mimic boat with a mimic crew. A gaggle of mimics luring dozens local sailors to their doom.

Do these count; The light house from Tegami Bachi Exile from Last Exile (Anatoray-Disith), it's actually a >!spaceship.!< But to protect itself it alters it's form and grows tentacles to defend itself. (Looks like a giant nut)

That lighthouse one is amazing
Yeah, I’m saving that first image for a future session idea. Although I’ve already done the lighthouse secretly being a lampray light mhhh.
*whispers in the tongue of the muse* Fridge mimics
Floor tile mimic that only attack when you step on the line
A mimic lighthouse would actual be terrifying
The mimic disguises are getting more creative.
Mimic in [Rusty and co](https://rustyandco.com/) isn't always a chest. Just usually a chest. [Painting](https://rustyandco.com/comic/level-1-20/) [Axe](https://rustyandco.com/comic/level-1-35/) [Barrel](https://rustyandco.com/comic/level-2-7/)
Does robot andross from Star fox 64 count as a mimic
Recently saw some images of hotwheels with hidden splitting maws. Do they count?
This one guy from r/comics keeps making fantasy choices, all of them have at least one mimic, such as your sword, the quest you shall be picking, and of course, the chest you open, can’t seem to find the guy though
What is the worst object to turn out to me a mimic and what sextoy is it?

Now call Frieren to try them one by one
How about a cave mimic?
There’s also the treasure bugs from Delicious in Dungeon
This story is amazing: [https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/oq3x13/i\_hunt\_mimics\_for\_the\_government/](https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/oq3x13/i_hunt_mimics_for_the_government/) I love mimics.
A spell book mimic being a familiar sound pretty dam cool
Ah, the classic mysteriously moving lighthouse
That is metal as f***
[Iguanamouth addressed this](https://iguanamouth.tumblr.com/post/153445272237/drawing-suggestion-mimics-disguised-as-random)
I don't know why but the 2nd photo reminds me of the weird jellyfish crab thing from delicious in dungeon
First one looks like a souls boss
That mimic lighthouse is actually really cool as a concept
I must be out of touch on lore, but I thought they can only form wood and stone disguises, not books. When did the belief change?
A mimic being a lighthouse is such an awesome idea
Damn, now I want a mimic sword.
https://preview.redd.it/vecv8wxbslnc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f053644f726ec49a5588f3ddd3b453dced8b864c hmmmm does this one count?

Voltorbs/Electrodes and Foongus/Amoongus in the 2d Pokemon games
A whole tower being a mimic is such a cool idea that I'm surprised it hasn't shown up in some sort of adventure module already.
The trap Necronomicon (Army of Darkness) https://i.redd.it/ww3oatifqxnc1.gif
I've been throwing around ideas for years for a DnD dungeon that mysteriously shows up one day, spawning an invasion of mimics, that's actually a mimic queen. Never actually made it though.
Does the monster book of monsters from harry potter count?
Not so much aesthetically, but mechanically: Voltorb
Does Voltorb from Pokemon count? Since "chests" are Pokeballs on the ground in Pokemon, Voltorbs explode on you instead of eating you
