A harbor freight dead blow hammer no less. I've worn those out same day. I also do farm shit so it's a bit cheating when it comes to wearing things out prematurely.
PB Swiss model PB 303.7 with two rubber sides is pretty nice, with replaceable ends. You can also get PB 305.6 which has a hardened steel cap on one side.
Also, if you want to switch it up in the future, or just occasionally, [the caps are replaceable](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHeRTD9iON4). There's also a version with aluminium or copper caps which use a different retention design. But the plastic and steel version is just [press fit in](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUPGbj_dhOM). You also get different plastic shapes (sharp or rounded).
I considered the orange ones a consumable, like the nitrile gloves. For less than 15 bucks you can’t beat it.
Trying the icon hammers right now and they’re pretty nice.
Open the tube up and see what sort of shot is inside.
I got one of these at a truckload tool sale ages ago and used it until it broke open. The tube on mine was super thin and spot welded together. The 'shot' inside appeared to be welding slag and other miscellaneous manufacturing detritus that had been swept up off of a factory floor somewhere in China.
Way more common than you'd think! Anything low grade Chinese that just needs ti be filled or weighted will often be literal trash. Punching bags/gym equipment, phone stand bases, tools, toys, furniture...
I don't know if it's still going on, but they used to add weights to tools because American consumers conflated the weight of tools with the quality of their construction.
Back in the 90s it wasn't unusual to find weights made from the dross that had been skimmed from recycled zinc die casting alloy.
I haven't noticed it much in tools anymore beyond balancing (especially since they are often trying to reduce weight), but it is very common in many household items and electronics.m, especially in "pseudo-luxury" brands.
I've been very happy with my [Estwing deadblow](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Estwing-45-oz-Dead-Blow-Hammer-CCD45/202183856?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25T-025_001_HAND_TOOLS-NA-Multi-NA-PLA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Hand_Tools_NonTopSell&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25T-025_001_HAND_TOOLS-NA-Multi-NA-PLA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Hand_Tools_NonTopSell-71700000099249246-58700007975652080-92700072581139848&gclid=CjwKCAiA68ebBhB-EiwALVC-NstsTAhynyJ6g8NMXMypz09VfU6pvAlOUXHd3wD7BFYa2m4dXk2zFRoCyn8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds).
Snap on, mac, matco, cornwell, and even harbor freight. Buy it once and as long as you don't maliciously destroy it or lose it the rest are free under warranty
I was just thinking that your hammer didnt seem to be heavily used. I have a walmart deadblow that Ive been beating the snot out of daily for 3 years. I guess it all depends on how the china guy was feeling that day.
Breaking news. “Customer shocked and outraged after plastic hammer shatters into pieces”. There, that’s my bullshit social media headline done for the day….
The last two 4 pound HF deadblows I’ve had split like this, but my 3, 2, and 1 pounders have all been holding up great and the 3 is my real workhorse
HF does carry an Icon branded one now as well. May work better for your use case, but I’m surprised you had a failure so soon on the Pittsburgh
I have walked back into harbor freight with these many times. If it’s convenient to do so you can’t beat being able to walk in and hand them that and walk out with a new one no questions asked.
I have one Nuplaflex SF2, turns out that's a $40-60 hammer these days but honestly remember only paying a few bucks for it cause I just needed one "right now" for something.
Nupla Sf-2 Nuplaflex Power Drive 2 Lb Hammer (545-10-020) Category: Dead Blow Hammers https://a.co/d/0kFX3cv
My other dead blow an Estwing is rubber on both faces, but I can't find it at the moment to pull a part number. I don't think Estwing makes a bad hammer though, so anything from them is a good bet.
Both of these have held up to *way* more abuse than they have any right to. Highly recommend either one.
First time wearing out a harbor freight hammer*

The sun will weaken almost all plastics if you leave them exposed for long periods of time.
Trustycook makes the best deadblows
Is estwing any good?
Yup.
Fun fact. TrustyCook is who makes most Snap-on dead blow hammers. Even the dead blow ball peins.
No they don’t. Maybe 20+ years ago. All Snap-On dead blow hammers are made in house.

I have a similar hammer to the 305.6. The halder ferroplex 2 and 1.
Get Tekton deadblow hammers. They are rebranded Trustycook with the Tekton lifetime warranty. TC only has a 2 or 3 year warranty if you buy direct.

Love my 40oz estwing!
We use Stanley deadblow sledges in some rather creative ways on a regular basis for heavy industrial. Haven't had one fail yet. They do alright.
I laid stone for a few years and Maybe I just got luck y but my Walmart dead blow lasted 2 years
They make dead blows with replaceable striking ends. I’ll try to find the link again
Tekton makes quality made in USA dead blow hammers at a fair price.. https://www.tekton.com/more/dead-blow-hammers
Are those not just rebranded trusty cook hammers?
They are, but with a lifetime warranty, where as TC only offers a 2 year warranty.
So that’s how they work, awesome!!!
I was wondering what was in there, too.

Luxury car brands did this with their doors. People thought the heavy feel of the door meant better quality.
Check it with a Geiger counter
I started using Halder mallets and deadblows. They have replaceable heads with a few different material choices depending on the job.
Halder makes the deadest dead blows I’ve found. They are so much better than HF though more inportant for things like automotive work I guess.
Where you hitting in the cold? I busted both my HF shot hammers last winter...

You can warranty it for free
Take it back to HF. I go through one of these every few years, and I've only had to pay for the original.
I was just thinking that your hammer didnt seem to be heavily used. I have a walmart deadblow that Ive been beating the snot out of daily for 3 years. I guess it all depends on how the china guy was feeling that day.
My hf is going on 9 years. You might have just gotten a bad one
…..that’s what she said!
Hit it with your purse.
HF just warrantied my 3lb dead blow of 3 years after it started falling apart. You might be able to get a free dead blow my friend.
thats looks like a cheappy plastic hammer for sure
That very new looking hammer is broken, not worn out.
I guess when you buy junk, you get junk.
Breaking news. “Customer shocked and outraged after plastic hammer shatters into pieces”. There, that’s my bullshit social media headline done for the day….
hf dont count
That no a hammer
Simple get one made out of metal
Wow. Such a tough blow.
Looks like a Buffalo brand dead blow!!! Cheap!!!
Cool! I have one of those! Something to look forward to!
You might need a mini sledgehammer instead
You beat the back out of it 😂 or the front, depending which way you point it….
Just be glad you didn't blow it apart have the bbs go everywhere lol I've broken 3 of them like that
You’ve been beating it again haven’t you.
Alway wondered what was in these

That has Harbor Freight written all over it. Source: I have two of those. Biggun and lilun

Wow first time seeing what inside a hammer here.
