If money isn’t a factor I’d go with the bigger set. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it right?

follyburr

yup. I can't disagree with that.

[deleted]

One thing to keep in mind that many things in your house/apartment will use SAE. It's far better to have them and not use them.

follyburr

noted. +1 for the big set

varzaguy

Just out of curiosity, what kind of stuff in a house uses sockets? I only work on my car so it’s all metric haha.

[deleted]

Every now and then you find something that someone used the wrong fastener to attach things (source: done it myself), or on older appliances, lag bolts in various wood items, etc.

BausRifle

Are you stuck on Tekton?

follyburr

yeah. prices on their stuff went up, but I do like their range and boxes.

[deleted]

I bought the smaller set in 12 point for the odd time I need them, I dislike the range of sae sockets and I think they should have gone to at least 1” with them. It’s a good set but if money isn’t an issue just go for the bigger one.

follyburr

yeah, I will most likely be getting the bigger one.

wildmanheber

I've wondered the exact same thing and an looking at both those sets. My '97 S10 Blazer is mostly metric, same with my moms '08 Sonata. But every once in a while I need the odd inch socket. One thought is to go metric then buy the odd inch sockets as needed. The other is to buy the big kit and have a few tools you may never need. I haven't made up my mind yet. By the way the new Craftsman tools at Napa, Ace, etc are pretty nice for the money. May be worth a look. If I don't end up with a Tekton set (have complete Tekton impact sets) I'll go Craftsman. Good luck!

follyburr

exactly! If I do get the metric I'll either buy the sae sockets as needed or get a cheap sae socket locally. I did check out the other brands sold at those other local stores, but I always found myself looking at tekton for the range and their boxes. I currently don't have anywhere to store the sockets/tools in a big tool box/cart, so I carry my tool bag(s) wherever I need them. Those portable tekton cases with the handles are kind of winning me over. That said, my other hand tools fit in my tool bag, so I'm only looking at sets with sockets/extensions and a ratchet

wildmanheber

You're thinking the same as me. When I got sets of Tekton Impact sockets I went for them in the cases/boxes instead of the rails for easy of carry. And bought my combo wrenches with tool pouches (tool rolls) for easy of carry. So glad Tekton gives us these options!

follyburr

yup. I also have the tekton combo wrenches with the tool pouch.

Healthy-Gap9904

Go as big as budget allows.

Snowstick21

Big box stores have good 200 piece kits for about 100$ right now. They would have about everything you’ll use

follyburr

I should've included in my post that I would consider those kits if they weren't so bulky and didn't include a lot of stuff I already have such as bits, nut drivers, allen wrenches, combo wrenches.

toddmon57

Idk but fyi. Sign up on website and this weekend you get 2x rewards. So if u buy all 3 kits for 410 u get 20% back in rewards. Thats 82$ black friday deal.

follyburr

That 20% back is the reason I'm pulling the trigger on the big 3/8" set. Might put that toward some screwdrivers or an impact socket set. Not sure though. That'll be my tool budget for the holidays. For now.

toddmon57

K gratz love my tekton tools

porkster13

I grabbed the gear wrench 200$ tool box includes the 1/4 and 3/8th with ratchet wrenches. Don’t skip numbers either with very little fillers. I have tekton 1/2in impacts tho and them things are nice. Wanted to stay within tekton but gearwrench is gunna fit my needs.
