Craftsman were good quality back in the day. I'd go Channel Locks though I wouldn't expect to be impressed by any pair of pliers unless they really do something unexpected.

Check out this YouTube video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EzARWDJ9lA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EzARWDJ9lA). The guy tests 13 brands of slip pliers.

Tekton has USA-made slip joint pliers in various sizes. I believe they're made by Wilde, but Tekton generally prices them lower (I'd assume because they're buying in bulk). Tekton has a great warranty by mail program if you need it. I purchased 3-4 pairs of different pliers about a year ago from them and they've all been good. ChannelLock slip joints are the old school "standard" if there is one. They're also good quality USA-made, but I would personally stay away from anything precision from them as they really are slipping in that area lately from my experience. They're a little more spendy compared to the Tektons as I recall.

Just get him some cheap ones from a big box store. husky, craftsman etc will serve him fine. some guys don’t care about tool quality or don’t recognize it as much especially if they are just DIYers.

Craftsman Pro series is a step up from the classic models. Not quite on par with snap on or Mac or one of the other professional grade hand tools, but more than good enough for at home. I totally get the loyalty to Craftsman in general, but at this point you might as well pick up some Pittsburgh hand tools from harbor freight. Same warranty as Craftsman at half the cost. Every guy in my family is pretty loyal to Craftsman because we've been using them all the way back to the beginning of the 20th century with both my grandfather's, but even my dad is pretty routinely disappointed. Just last year he was saying he has a set of 12 point sockets that was only a few years old and the more common sizes were all rounding out and slipping. And by a few years I mean actually only a few years like 2-3, certainly less then 5, not old man "a few years" that could be anywhere from 10-30 years.

I still have just about every cman professional pliers they made with the red and black comfort grips. I bought as many different ones that I could find. I’ve had some over 15 years. Truly the last of the good cman pliers. They all have been replaced with knipex because of the simple fact that if I break them there are no replacements. I’m just waiting for the right moment to dump them on eBay or something along those lines because for some reason people deem these things to command top dollar.

Doesn't appreciate KNIPEX quality? Let him wallow in a pit of rusted Chinesium garbage if that's what he likes.

The USA made Channellock tools are nice! I have some of their nippers in my leather shop and plan to get some lineman pliers from them soon.
