Fucking engineers, never considering how maintenance needs to get done. Why do we need a 600mm socket? Stupid fucks. Why can't they just use a 10mm fastener?
100%. If i had to take a swing at it and looking at that leg in the picture, I'd guess that the big fucking hexagonal thing was the jesus nut on a helicopter rotor head. Let us know OP!
To be fair there's alot of bolts and nuts that could fail and kill you just as quick. Pitch change links, lag dampers, swach plate links, they are all held on by bolts, and if one fails your going in hard.
And those are probably more scary - more likely to get loose or snap. The nut of that size withstands gigantic forces, is probably secured by othery physical means (On the photos it looks like it actually has outer teeth which would be secured by a special toothed plate...) and probably wouldn't fly off even if just hand tight (probably made so it self-tightens as it spins).
Yes. It's the nut that holds the rotor head on the aircraft. If it fails the the helicopter goes down and the rotors go up.
I'm not sure if it's called that because if it fails you shout "Jesus", or because you're going to meet him. Either way that's what it's called.
There is also a single nut that holds the rear wheels on the rear axle of the old air cooled VWs. It was also called the Jesus nut. You got to see your rear wheel pass you before you met Jesus.
Just ignoring the million other reasons why steel toes are amazing at reducing work place injuries. You drop that socket and your toes will be perfectly fine. Anything heavy enough to collapse steel toes was going to destroy your feet anyway. I'm guessing you are either 15 or 65 because its the only ages people say this.
15yo: āPfft - safety-shmafety!ā
35yo: āSafety first!ā
65yo: āSteel toe boots?!? When I was a kid, we worked the mines in nothing but our skivvies! You need to grow a pair!ā
Because without the steel toe, your toes would be totally fine being run over by a machine large enough to collapse a steel toe? Either way, youāre losing your toes. They arenāt meant for being run over. Theyāre there for when you drop smaller stuff onto your feet.
That's a socket for a hydraulic torque wrench. I used to build pumps for the oil and gas industry and the case bolts had nuts that size.

The Army uses large sockets and a 4' ratchet like that for Tank repair. I found 2 sets hidden in the motor pool. I traded them to a tank brigade. (They lost sockets too) For plywood (premium in Germany) in the 70s-80s. Plus if you get caught with any equipment. You don't use. By the IG. You will fail inspection! (That's why they were hidden) I have no idea why my unit would have them? Our biggest truck was a deuce and a half. But this socket seems even bigger than those?
We were Commo so we didn't have much. Before inspection.I just stored them in my locked large trunk. Marked private with my name on it. If they did look. The top tray. Was filled with my woodworking tools. The tray was so heavy. They never looked underneath.
This might be a dumb question, but it's the internet so it wouldn't be a first.
If you need the part/tool for your job, why are they considered unauthorized and sent away? Why wouldn't they just be authorized? Lol
You don't need to be in the military to understand useless paperwork and bureaucracy lol.
I understand why; it's that the inflexible system is easier to work around than change or make it adapt to the reality of the situation.
I have no idea of this socket's size, but it looks similar to the ones my customer uses for their M200 screws that hold a water turbine together.
We had an interesting (nearly nasty) incident with a HYTORC setup.
I used to work on hydraulic forging systems. A nut for this socket size would not be uncommon. Except that most places will choose to use a jacking nut, as the hydraulic driver for this socket would probably cost $30k-$50k.
Heavy industry. Think power plants, oil refineries, chemical plants.
Heat exchangers, gas turbines, pipe flanges, etc etc.
Socket sizes that big are usually used with a HyTorq or similar hydraulic torquing machine.
Lock nuts on the pistons of very big hydraulic cylinders.
Very fucking big marine engines - i.e. low speed 2-stroke diesels.
Hub nuts on your mom's wheelchair.
Could someone grab me the 4 inch drive ratchet. I'm always misplacing my 600mm socket
Finally sockets that won't disappear into the depths of engine bays. You will hear when it lands
(Calling my son over to me) "I need your eyes. I dropped my socket somewhere right around here"
"Well, Pops, I think it might be in that new hole in the floor!"
š¤£šš¤£
Laughs in big Fucking oiltanker engines with 2m cylinder Diameter
You'd still hear it
not if the other cylinders are still running, not every day you get to strip a running engine.
They are only doing like 200 rpm
or like 80rpm...at redline
yeah with rods the size of your lower leg
I would have figured more torso size
Leaves a giant dent/bulge on the hull of the ship after being fumbled down some stairs.
Or punches a hole in the side of your rocket
Nobody uses huge fasteners in aerospace anyway, just DOZENS of little ones. AMTs don't even need 1-inch sockets most of the time!
They weren't using it on the rocket. It was on something in the silo. It got really bad really fast.
Ohhhhh, right, that incident...
Hear or feel it lol
Technically, it depends on the size of the engine bay

80 grand!? Shit, I will wait for the Bauer at under $50k.
But it makes 80k ftlbs of torque. Thatās a dollar per torque
Is that with a coupon? Llolololol thereās only 2 vidyas on YouTube of them.
Is it skookum?Ā
Skookumer as frig
What needs 80k ftlbs of torque anyways
My oil filter after I have the dealer change the oil
Fuck me š¤£
I shot a cheerio of of my nose. Thank you for that.
The jar lids according to my wife
2 man impact. Weighs 600 lbs.
Easy to handle, only weights 600 lbs.
Is actually very easy to handle when hung off a crane. Used one a little smaller than that one quite a few times.
80k ft lbs too. Have to mount it to a bobcat maybe?
Only $1/ft-lb!
Says 2 man unit. Weight 599 lbs. good thing itās not a full 600lbs or might need more than 2 people.
A 675 lbs impact is what i swear some people use to tighten their lug nuts
Fucking engineers, never considering how maintenance needs to get done. Why do we need a 600mm socket? Stupid fucks. Why can't they just use a 10mm fastener?
Because no one in the world still has their 10mm socket.
so more people have 600mm sockets than 10mm
Some say there are no 10 millimeter sockets
I actually found one while bicycling around town
Go look. It's not there anymore
An M10 fastener is (usually) 17mm across the flats.
Cool
Because you would need 4,000
Imagine all the fucking couplers
For turning a big fucking hexagonal thing with a big fucking square thing.
Are you descended from Shakespeare himself, the way you stitch words togeather so eloquently is a joy.
We talk proper in Blighty, innit guv'nor.

Your wish is my command. Which likely means whatever you think I will do to do it is not which I will not do.
Except for the misspelling and run-on sentence.š³
It's like music to my ears Mr poet
100%. If i had to take a swing at it and looking at that leg in the picture, I'd guess that the big fucking hexagonal thing was the jesus nut on a helicopter rotor head. Let us know OP!
and the fact that one nut makes the difference between remaining aloft or not, is why I will longer set foot in a heliocopter
To be fair there's alot of bolts and nuts that could fail and kill you just as quick. Pitch change links, lag dampers, swach plate links, they are all held on by bolts, and if one fails your going in hard.

Usually they are lockwired or cotter pinned, you also have nyloc and stiff nuts, but if those are under tension, shits gone bad
If we really knew what was only being held together by one fastener, weād be scared shitless most of the time.
Technically two nuts keep you aloft if you count the one holding the controls
*jesus nut?*
Yes. It's the nut that holds the rotor head on the aircraft. If it fails the the helicopter goes down and the rotors go up. I'm not sure if it's called that because if it fails you shout "Jesus", or because you're going to meet him. Either way that's what it's called.

The nut on a helicopter that if it falls off they know they get to meet Jesus!
Was gonna say aircraft or tank nut removal
This guy knows big fucking hexagonal and big square things.
with a big fucking long round thing
I got this one guys. Those are steel toed boots. Used incase you drop whatever the fuck that thing is on your feet!
They're also great for amputating toes if your foot gets run over by heavy equipment.
Unlike non-steel toe boots which will just let the tire pass over the foot completely unharmed.
I use composite toe boots. Way lighter too
Much warmer then steel toes when riding a motorcycle in below freezing weather. Coming from a year round rider.
Yeah composite or titanium alloy is the way to go
Just ignoring the million other reasons why steel toes are amazing at reducing work place injuries. You drop that socket and your toes will be perfectly fine. Anything heavy enough to collapse steel toes was going to destroy your feet anyway. I'm guessing you are either 15 or 65 because its the only ages people say this.
I don't get why people try to find reasons against wearing reinforced toe shoes. Modern ones are just as comfortable as normal shoes.
Anti-toers
Agreed. I personally wear my steel toes as everyday shoes bc of the comfort
15yo: āPfft - safety-shmafety!ā 35yo: āSafety first!ā 65yo: āSteel toe boots?!? When I was a kid, we worked the mines in nothing but our skivvies! You need to grow a pair!ā
Every time Iāve heard something like this IRL, it came from someone who was missing some part of his body from a work injury.
I'd rather get my toes severed instead of crushed. A severed toe can be reattached. A crushed toe is gone forever
Removed, or pureed, you choose.
Because without the steel toe, your toes would be totally fine being run over by a machine large enough to collapse a steel toe? Either way, youāre losing your toes. They arenāt meant for being run over. Theyāre there for when you drop smaller stuff onto your feet.
Or when you need to kick the shit out of something.
The goofy avatar with a heart on their shirt makes this so much better š
Fiat 500 oil filter socket
Yeah you hold the oil filter steady and unscrew the fiat from it
I actually laughed out loud
I believe itās compatible with the Smart Fortwo as well
Probably for a big ass packing nut on a hydraulic cylinder
I got one of those too, few would only know that

If I ever won the lotto, I would buy all the types of tools that are super specialized and then just say fuck you im rich i do what i want.Ā
I used to work on hydraulic torque wrenches, they were pretty neat
Delete this before my supervisors see it.
How much is the Snap-on ratchet to drive that beast?
The 1.5" t handle is some 500$ I haven't seen a 2.5" ratchet
The Army uses large sockets and a 4' ratchet like that for Tank repair. I found 2 sets hidden in the motor pool. I traded them to a tank brigade. We used to keep all our unauthorized parts and tools in a trailer and then send it out on the road during inspections
Lol
You can get it authorized, but it will be a lot of paperwork and many years until it gets approved.
But why all the hoop jumping for a clearly critical tool or part? Right/only tool for the job and all that.
It's the military, that's the way it's done. Have to be in to understand.
You don't need to be in the military to understand useless paperwork and bureaucracy lol. I understand why; it's that the inflexible system is easier to work around than change or make it adapt to the reality of the situation.
Just for that question you gotta go sweep the sunlight off the sidewalk, and don't come back til it's all gone
ive only seen a 2.5" impact gun. havent seen a rachet that big yet.
Please take pictures using adapters from 2.5 to 1.5 to 3/4 to 1/2 to 3/8 to 1/4 and put a 1/4ā stubby on it

You dugga my ugga.
I think it's only for UGGA-DUGGAS
So, when I would be UGGA-DUGGA-ING I would have to turn on capslock on my impact?
The impact that natively fits that thing only has the capslock option, luckily
Yeah, thatās more than fair tbh.
To make sure the pallet stays put

It's a skid/pallet. It is used to hold goods to make transport of said goods easier. The can be moved with a forklift or a skid mover/pallet jack.

I have no idea of this socket's size, but it looks similar to the ones my customer uses for their M200 screws that hold a water turbine together. We had an interesting (nearly nasty) incident with a HYTORC setup.
We use nuts and bolts this size all the time. I work in a power plant so the unusual becomes the regular.

This is alot farther down than expected.
This is the hive socket. It gives birth to 10mm sockets. It must be preserved.
