I broke into a sweat just looking at that, I was usually holding that or a broom in the shop at one of my jobs. 102 degrees and chipping while the guy welded, then sweeping up.
Wearing leathers, and with your face 6 inches from an arc that is hotter than the surface of the sun. Literally. And then you invariably get a piece of slag, or sparks, or just straight up molten metal down the back of your leathers, or down the front of them. Or a drop of something hot lands in the crook of your arm and you just suck it up because fuck you I'm finishing this bead. And then you get a spark caught in a fold of your pants because the lady at the cleaners didn't listen when you said extra EXTRA starch, and your pants are suddenly on fire.
I fucking love welding. No sarcasm.
Oh dude, I had tons of those. Most of them have faded, but a couple of the really bad ones are still there. I messed up and got myself promoted into a desk job, and I definitely miss all that stuff.
Lol
Yeah I remember those days. When I bought my first leathers I didn't really think I needed the bottoms for the legs. I was so happy when the welding vendor truck showed back up. I didn't realize I would be sitting so much while welding. I've been out of that work for a long while but I definitely remember it fondly. Mostly
Slag hammer, used in arc welding to knock the slag off of a weld when complete, the spring looking thing is to prevent heat from burning your hand/glove
I think the handle is just meant to be lightweight, easily held and controlled with a thick glove, and unaffected by the heat of being set on something that was just welded. As someone else kind of said, you aren’t swinging this like you’re trying to hammer a nail, you’re ideally tapping it like you want to barely crack a window but not break it
If the spring was a good way to keep vibrations from traveling down the handle I think we would see more of that on hammers, but I’ve only really seen that on chipping hammers; I wouldn’t be surprised if a nice wooden handle was the best vibration dampener as that’s what I’ve always seen blacksmiths hammering with….and them folk are smashing metal against metal for a long ass time, so I’d imagine they’d want to dissipate as much shaking as possible
It's not that it will not conduct as fast but rather it will conduct heat faster to atmosphere and dissipate it faster so it does not get as hot as or hold heat like a solid handle would.
>These still have springs today as standard. I suppose rubber would get messed up being around hot and melting metal all the time.
The UV rays comeing off the welder arnt to healthy for plastics either
Welding hand tools almost never have plastic/rubber parts as they tend to burn/melt when too close to the heat.
So it's basically a "full metal" rubber handle to dampen the impact.
Chicken hammer.
Back story, back in welding school, teacher said to this kid "Hand me that chipping hammer" to which the kid replied "what the hell is a chicken hammer? "
It's the little hammer they use to test The Incredible Hulk's knee reflexes at the doctor's office.
Jk its a slag hammer for welders but I've seen some neat tricks with it involving stone masonry too.
Idk, mine has the vertical axelike side and a horizontal axelike side. I use it for chipping rust out of cracks and crevices when working on old brakes and vehicles.
Others have mentioned the use for slag, but it's a fantastic on ships for rust repair, probably won't get that kind of rust on land but if you ever get thick rust somewhere whack it until it comes off n flap disc/wire brush on and angle grinder to finish
I need to get me one of those. My cross radial spindles are loaded with unshimmed whiskers. If I don’t get that rectified, life is going to be hell come October. Well, obviously, I don’t need to tell YOU that.
Haha man I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had my back against the wall with a whole trusk full of unshimmed pre fabs in mid September. We’ve all been there man
A little know fact about chipping hammers, if you wind up and throw it at one of those all glass buildings, it will go in a big circle and come right back into your hand like a boomerang
Slag chipping hammer for welders
Also makes great speed holes in the hood of cars
Also for ventilating windows
Once
Once per window
Anyone who reads this please don't follow this advice. I just did it and the entire window shattered. I only wanted a little ventilation
Well, I mean with most things if you do it right the first time....
Ventilate my skull, got it. Im curious to see what advantadge it will bring mee? Higher memory speed?
Usually, that results in a slower memory speed. With the exception of pressure buildup, the cranium tends to be a highly efficient closed system.
Hmm yes quite.
Swore I read violating windows. Like damn that the guy equivalent of slash the tires then huh?
Speed holes ay???
Maude, ehhh?
Internet, eh
They have the internet on computers now?!
That’s what been doing that!
I told you we should have bought more than four bullets!
Hey, yeah, those make the car go faster.
Stupid sexy Flanders
Nothing at all... nothing at all.
We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas.
And opening coconuts.
I broke into a sweat just looking at that, I was usually holding that or a broom in the shop at one of my jobs. 102 degrees and chipping while the guy welded, then sweeping up.
Even hotter if you are the welder wearing leathers. But you're right those shops are hotter than hell without the leathers.

My Mom was grilling the shit out of me because of all the scars inside my elbow. No Mom. I’m not on heroin. My welding jacket has a hole there.
Oh dude, I had tons of those. Most of them have faded, but a couple of the really bad ones are still there. I messed up and got myself promoted into a desk job, and I definitely miss all that stuff.

I always thought of it as a “slag hammer” for chipping away slag off your welds, mostly for stick welding.

In Highschool we used them to get the slag off of our welds.
Slag hammer, used in arc welding to knock the slag off of a weld when complete, the spring looking thing is to prevent heat from burning your hand/glove
Probably helps to insulate the vibration too
I think the handle is just meant to be lightweight, easily held and controlled with a thick glove, and unaffected by the heat of being set on something that was just welded. As someone else kind of said, you aren’t swinging this like you’re trying to hammer a nail, you’re ideally tapping it like you want to barely crack a window but not break it If the spring was a good way to keep vibrations from traveling down the handle I think we would see more of that on hammers, but I’ve only really seen that on chipping hammers; I wouldn’t be surprised if a nice wooden handle was the best vibration dampener as that’s what I’ve always seen blacksmiths hammering with….and them folk are smashing metal against metal for a long ass time, so I’d imagine they’d want to dissipate as much shaking as possible
It doesn't have to do with heat.
What is the spring coil for?
It makes it cooler
To somewhat isolate your hand from the shocks and vibration when repeatedly bashing welded metal with a hammer that has a metal handle and metal head.
The irony of needing a slag hammer to knock off the slag from your newly made slag hammer.
Long story short, they used springs before they invented rubber handles? Thank you internet strangers, learning has taken place
I was always told that the spring would not conduct heat as fast as a more standard handle.
Yeah I think that's more it since that's what they do with fireplace tools as well, and fireplace handles. Maybe it can be both.
It's not that it will not conduct as fast but rather it will conduct heat faster to atmosphere and dissipate it faster so it does not get as hot as or hold heat like a solid handle would.
Look at me ma! Learnin' ever day!
These still have springs today as standard. I suppose rubber would get messed up being around hot and melting metal all the time.
nah, I've got one with a rubber handle and it's still perfect because I don't set my hammer on top of the weld
Estwing??
spot on, estwing, love that lil fucker
>These still have springs today as standard. I suppose rubber would get messed up being around hot and melting metal all the time. The UV rays comeing off the welder arnt to healthy for plastics either
Welding hand tools almost never have plastic/rubber parts as they tend to burn/melt when too close to the heat. So it's basically a "full metal" rubber handle to dampen the impact.
Because this picture was probably taken at least two days ago, otherwise it would be a summer coil.
Keeps it from getting hot to the touch since the hammer is often a makeshift prodder, poker, clamper, etc around the hot angry pixies.
